Scoring question for the wizards here about a situation that came up in my friend's son's game this afternoon. Situation: runners on 1st and 3rd, less than 2 outs. Batter hits a pop-up to 2nd, but the 2B drops it. He recovers and forces the runner at 2nd, with the batter replacing him at 1st and the runner on 3rd staying put. How do you score that? I called it a fielder's choice and no error, but the official scorer charged an error to the 2B. How would you score it?
Wait, did the 2B drop the ball with intent?

« on: August 15, 2013, 11:30:04 am »
Yeah, I see it that way too after watching again.  Seems usually the player is so happy, he immediately pulls the ball out if his glove to show the world.  Grossman played it off like he was just doing his job.  Would of been a hell of a hidden ball trick, if he missed it and not gotten called on it.

42
Talk Zone / Grossmans catch
« on: August 15, 2013, 10:57:43 am »
If you haven't see it, last night's game saving catch over the wall, find it. It's pretty awesome. But thought Chris Davis asking to see the ball was was a little disrespectful. Like he couldn't believe an Astro could pull it off. The umps weren't asking to see it, why does Grossman owe Davis visual proof. Would've liked to seen him show Davis the finger.

I think it's pretty good, especially the Shooting Star over the Rainbow Gut. They are definitely in "promote the brand mode" since they lack a face to put on it.  Also will be a challenge to make-over Minute Maid Park since it was basically built around the current colors. worked out pretty well because of Kepp's injury, but unless a) Keppinger falls off the table or b) Hall suddenly becomes Prince of the Crawford Boxes this looks like at best a wash

Kepp worked out pretty well last year so the Astros went out to protect him with Hall, just in case. So far so good.
If Hall plays well, Kepp comes back, you've got depth.  If Hall tanks, Kepp comes back and must step up, I still like both scenarios.

I don't how much he'd clear in payroll, but how about trading Keppinger and keeping both Wandy and Webb.  Wandy can always be flipped at the deadline.  Myers, Wandy, Happ, Webb and Figueroa/Rowland-Smith isn't a bad rotation.

As far as the current state of rotation goes and with the fact they open on the road in Philly, I'd wouldn't mind seeing Happ and Meyers open against their former club, then Wandy v Roy in game three of the series.  Then Bud throws the Home Opener.

You are correct sir, old habits die hard. The actual FIFA country code for the region is NED, for Nederland.  Holland has become more of a nickname, like the Azzuri for Italy or Yanks for Americans.  Depending on how it's used, Holland can actually be an insult to some, sorta like calling a Texan a Yank.

I had a Spain - Brazil final in my bracket and, despite a number of early games going awry, that's how it's panning out and I have no reason to change my opinion.  Spain beats Brazil in a thriller.

Same here, but I've got Brasil winning their 6th title.  Dating back to 1962, this thing goes Euro/S. America/Euro/S. America...

1962 Brasil
1966 England
1970 Brasil
1974 W. Germany
1978 Argentina
1982 Italy
1986 Argentina
1990 W. Germany
1994 Brasil
1998 France
2002 Brasil
2006 Italy
2010 ...

I'm going on record here and say Brasil break's the trend at WC'14 and wins numbero 7 too.  Remember where we're going?

Rio.

Spain and The Netherlands will meet in the finals and Spain will final take care of business and win "La Copa Mundial".

This is the one I want.  Holland can play with Brasil all day long offensively, but Brasil get a slight edge on defense, which is wierd to say.  Robben's goal against Slovakia is my hands down fave of the Cup.

Friday, July 02
Holland v Brasil
9:00am at Port Elizabeth Stadium, Nelson Mandela Bay

I would love a Dutch upset here, but the Samba Boys are starting to feel there shirts.  This is a rematch of the '94 WC Quarterfinal, played in Dallas at the Cotton Bowl. I was there btw, it was incredible.   It was the game Bebeto did his famous "rock the baby" goal celebration.  The Dutch were down 0-2 and tied the game in the second half.  Won late by Brasil 3-2 on a free kick by Branco.

Uruguay v Ghana
1:30pm at Soccer City, Johannesburg

Gotta go with Uruguay here.  Incredibly strong defensive team and Forlan has been awesome.  Ghanaria won't be able to knock them off the ball like they did the Americans.

Saturday, July 3
Argentina v Germany
9:00am at Green Point Stadium, Cape Town

Pick 'em.  Soccer Gods say 0-0 and Germany wins on PK's.  The Hand of God will remain on the side line, but the little god on the field may finally find the net.  Who knows, he's very due.

Paraguay v Spain
1:30pm at Ellis Park Stadium, Johannesburg

Next, Espana romp.

wilt without his Barcalona supporting cast, and hell Maradona is bat ass crazy.  Injuries to Drogba and Nani will weigh heavy on the Ivory Coast and Portugal.  The ball is a ball, quit yer cryin' keepers and I'll take the over on the number of super models in attendence to fawn over Ronaldo's abb's.

Privately funded according to todays Statesman.  Wierdest thing about this is how out of the blue it came.  They've been working on it for four years?  I'm sure there was some heavy competition and a highly anticipated F1 announcement ceremony, but there wasn't a peep about it mentioned here in the paper or on local sports radio until the announcement came out yesterday.  I'm hearing it's going to be located somewhere around the new airport.  Also that it's not a 100% done deal just yet.

I replace batteries before every gig, unless doing consecutive nights.  Granted, I use 2 to 3 pedals tops.  I've had pedal boards with adapters but have had those fail too.  It's all personal preference really.  Here's a nice option  -

Does BRMC count as a "major" band?  If so, you can add BJM to the list (for the rare occasions that Anton let's the alternate singer actually sing).

That's a subective question. I guess to some maybe.  I understand your point, but with the current state of the music industry, i.e. the disappearance of the "Major" label, indentifying a band as "major" depends on the scene, or genre it's opperating in.  BJM is a good case in point.

If he only misses four games, it shouldn't be that big of a deal.  As stated earlier, these early game's usually come down to pitching and defence.  This being magnified by facing Linscum and Cain right off the bat.  I'd love to see some good small ball from this team.

I'm sure the crowd at Antones for Big Star will be substantial, but I wouldn't totally rule out trying.  I saw them during sx at the Music Hall a few years back and it was far from full.  They've done a ton of reunion shows, so alot of the indutry people have seen them and may opt for other Saturday hipster events.

I would strongly suggest The French Legation for anyone without a wristband.  It's a beautiful place, outdoors on a rolling hill, just east of I-35 and the line up there is sweet.  The xx play it Thursday at 6pm and Thurston Moore is Friday, also at six.  Free and open to the public.

Looking for a heads up on anything that might be good.  I plan on catching
Broken Bells/Spoon on Wednesday.  Love the new Broken Bells song.  Ray Davies
Thursday and Big Star Saturday.  The latter two make the wrist band purchase totally worth it, but hoping to find some good power pop to mix in between.  Also high on my list is The Happy Hollows, Brazos, The xx, She and Him, Band of Skulls, Best Coast and The Soft Pack.

If a team comes up from below, are they at risk of being sent down after only one season? Or is there some sort of guaranteed minimum stay?

No guarantee, finish bottom three and your relegated.  Great stuff from a casual fan stand point, heart breaking if it's "your" team.  It can get worse from there too because you can be relegated (or promoted) from any level.  In the late 90's Manchester City were relegated from the top flight, then again from the secend tier.  They've since climbed, er bought, there way, back up two divisions to the Premier League and are now one of the biggest spending clubs in Europe.

Unless, and this is a signifcant caveat, Andy's point about Coop essentially saying, "Just fire me now and be done with it" is true... then Drayton McLane continues to make a mockery of the baseball team I love to follow.

Now that Norris is off to a flying start, who is considered next in line as the top pitching prospect in the organization?  I guess to quantify that I mean - could make an impact with the rosters about to expand.

Beer and Queso indeed.  This is one tasty matchup with our neighbors to the South.  USA is arrriving in Mexico City just 22 hrs ahead of kick off, at the advice of the US Olympic Committee to deal with the altitude.  Team Mexico has moved the game up to 3pm to make it extra smoggy spicey.  The US has never won at Azteca Stadium, but with the recent string of good play against world champions Spain, and to a lesser extent vs mighty Brasil, this might be our day.

THEN, the 2nd half of the season rolls around, and those same assholes that wouldn't shut up about the AWESOME Rangers are suddenly talking about Cowboys training camp and Six Flags. You mention the Rangers and they look confused... "I'm not a Rangers fan, I hate pro baseball. When does football season start?"

Well said.

I can't say that I hate the Rangers, especially not in a Cubs or Mets kind of way, but I find their bandwagoneering fan base to be just obnoxious when this series is going on.   I kind of like inter league games between teams form the same cities, and the odd World Series rematches, but this one does nothing for me and it seems to be the same for the players.

Maybe I missed it, but I didn't see that the cameras were able to find Cooper.  They showed Romero, alot.  So much, that I was wondering if Cooper was serving a suspension and Romero was in charge.  I had the sound on tv turned down, listening to Milo and he seemed perturbed as all of us, commenting "This CAN'T happen".

Coopers' post game interview was laced with alot of "This is my fault, I take full responsability".  Then where were ya?

There is a list of do's and do don'ts on the web site, but for starters, a comfortable pair of walking shoes, sunscrene, colapsable chair, earplugs and well thought out list of what you want to see.  Oh yeah, Astros hat.

Not if the move was done for PC reasons.  If you can him earlier, then they can say you never really gave him a chance.  No job security, constanatly worrying if he'd have a job the next day, yadda yadda.

Now you can say, look we gave him our full confidence (with gauranteed money) and we didn't like the results.  He can leave with a nice fat paycheck.

Coop don't go away mad, Coop just go away.

The day the extension was announced, I came to the same conclusion.  The Astros organization treat thier own right, to a fault.

Ford had the entire nation vaccinated and more people died from the vaccination than the flu.

When my eldest was transitioning from pitching machine (don't get me started) to live arm, he was genuinely afraid to stand in the box--he was afraid of getting beaned.  So, what was a good mother to do?  I took him out in the yard and stood about 2 feet from him and threw a baseball at him (very softly).  He laughed at me and asked what I was doing.  I asked if it hurt and he said no.  So I backed up a couple of steps and threw a little harder.  He laughed again.  I kept backing up until I was about 30 ft away and threw it kinda hard.  I told him that there was nothing to be afraid of,  just make sure to get to first base, then cry if it hurt.  I also taught him the correct way to turn on an inside pitch.

Needless to say, it worked.  He had a few nice bruises on his backside, but lead the league in HBP.  He learned to get out of the way of the really hard pitchers, but take one for the team otherwise.

So, am I a mean, cruel mom?

A few questions concerning the catching situation...
Didn't the Astros draft a pretty highly rated catcher in the very early rounds a couple of years ago?
If so, how has he been doing?
Is the Coby Clemens catcher experiment still a legit project or was it ever?
Are the Astros looking for a one year free agent bandaid, if so, is Pudge a candidate?
Noe, why is Ausmus mortal?

I'll hang up and listen.

And the entire Cubs team AND their fans jumped around, on and off the field, like they had just won the World Series.  There is no word that describes the feeling I got watching that in the wake of everything  surrounding that game.

My faves
1.  Fleet Foxes - Best four part harmonies I've ever heard live with a hang over (them, not me).
2.  Racontuers - rocked balls
3.  Hot Chip - Electronica in the daylight of Zilker park.  Crowd was bonkers.
4.  Band of Horses - Wonderful vocals, good Neil Young style fest rock
5.  Robert Pant - Blue grass Zep versions were perfect
6.  Louis XIV - suprisingly good
7.  Delta Spirit - kicked ass

Conner Obhurst is an over rated wannabe
Dave Grohl was extra screamy, made me laugh

Weather: Exceptional
Crowd:  Beautiful
Food:  Good to great
Beer: Ice cold every time

It can be visible for 3 or 4 minutes, but it depends on where you are relative to the orbital path. There's another visible pass tonight, with magnitude 0.5 brightness (pretty bright), but it's only visible from 8:56:03 to 8:58:29 (Austin time). It will be relatively low in the sky, moving from WSW to SSW.

I usually get my info from Heavens Above.

That's Houston info right?  I'm not finding another Austin sighting op tonight.

Austin was lucky enough to be in the re-entry path several years ago.  I think it's called a plazma trail (?) that scorches across the night sky like nothing I've ever witnessed.  It has to be a night landing though, Discovery lands Saturday morning.

I've actually seen him play quite a few times.  Watched him during warm up drills during his first game at MMP with the Mets.  He was the only player to come out and jogged 3 or 4 laps and threw a helluva long toss session.  He was effortlessly firing rockets from deep out field.  I don't know what that means other than maybe a strong arm and good work ethic.

Berkman,  doesn't handle the bat for shit.

Well he does always place it gently on the ground when it is behaving nicely.

If it's true, I think it's another good signing by the new GM.  Speed and depth up the middle and I echo the remarks about tapping the asian market being good thing.

Considered the best SS in Japanese history.

Didn't the Mets originally move Reyes to 2B because of this?

Purely hypothetical, but I'd love to see the Dynamo, in play-off tempo, against anything mid-table in the Premier League right now.

Baseball America's 2007 Best Tools Survey has Ramirez as the best defensive outfielder and best outfield arm in the San Diego organization?

The Houston radio callers hate him already.

Sounds great to me.

Also aquired Yordany Ramirez, who Astros new brass are very high on.

Is this in another source?  Could you point this out to me please?

Sure, it came off the second link in the first post.  The video of the PC titled 'Philly welcomes Lidge".
It's at about the 3:25 minute mark.

Didn't sound bitter to me at all.  He first said he was coming from a team that had an up and down season to a team that had a winning season, then paraphrases it.  It's true.  Then he's asked by a reporter about Ausmus stating that he (Lidge) was unhappy with the organization.  He sets the record straight to say he was unhappy with himself when the closer role was yanked from him early in the year and not unhappy with the organization at all.

Are you hoping that his therapist reads here and will post something?

Absorutry!  But more interested in the OBP stats you provided, appreciate it.

Lance Berkman's OBPs:

2007 .386
2006 .420
2005 .411
2004 .450
2003 .412
2002 .405
2001 .430

Carlos Lee's OBPs:

2007 .354
2006 .355
2005 .324
2004 .366
2003 .366
2002 .359
2001 .321

Speaks for itself, even with Berkmans off year.

Have you read Lineup Machinations 101 yet?

Oh yeah, excellent thread.

Well, the outcome is whoever hits in front of Lee is protection, but he wasn't signed to specifically provide that outcome.  No one is.  In the year that Berkman had no one (Ensberg was a big flop) behind him, he had almost MVP numbers.  What the Astros knew they needed was a middle of the lineup bat to take pressure off Everett and Ausmus having to drive those runs in because of the failure of Ensberg, Wilson and Lane in the 4, 5 and 6 hole.

Are you thinking that the 5 hole is not as important to driving in runs as the cleanup spot?  Because if you are, you are wrong on that assumption.  It is a *HUGE* need on a team to have a great run producer in the 5 hole.  Not since the days of Kent and Alou before him have the Astros had that part of the lineup solidified.  Those were the days of playoff contending teams too.

What you need to understand is that 3-4-5 are solved only if 1-2 perform up to expectations... basically, you can't drive in runs if guys ahead of you don't get on.  If 1 through 5 do their job well, 6 becomes much more easier to handle for either Towles (a rookie) or Wiggington (my chalk pick for that spot).  7 and 8 are not in any pressure any more to have to pick up the ducks left behind by an inept 4-5-6 in the lineup.  That would probably bode well for a team that is carrying a rookie catcher and a shortstop known more for his glove than his bat.

That's, what I'm looking for.  Thanks.

I'm not trying to downplay the importance of the 5 hitter.  Just curious as to the psyche of Lee being shifted to it and the opinions around here on such minutia.  You know and ego's and such.  Sounds like it's a none issue though.  Also, tired of hearing about Bonds and A-Rod.

Is this a new way to start a Pence at #2 discussion?

Not at all, just about Berkman (off year) vs Lee, going into next year at clean up.

Define what you mean by "best clean up hitter".

I guess I mean that normally your best offensive weapon is slotted 3, which use to be Berkman.  So is he automatically best suited at 4 where Lee hit all year last year and did it well.
He was not signed to be protection for Berkman.  He was signed to drive in runs.
I'm basing that statement on Purpura's comments going into last seasons void.  IIRC, didn't he say their priority was to aquire a power bat to protect Berkman?

If the Astros go with a batting order that puts Pence in the three hole.  Is Berkman automatically the best clean up hitter, considering what Lee did there in '07?

And will putting one of them in the five hole an issue?  We all know Lee was signed to provide protection for Berkman, but is that written in stone in his contract?  This is probably not a question if Berkman didn't struggle like he did last year.  But he did, and I don't know enough about comparing the two, as to determine who the better choice is, so this may not even be a question, but is this senario creating a clean-up log jam for our two power bats?

Well this is certainly an encouraging developement.  Added speed and athletism to the outfield basepaths and lead-off role.  Opened up some room fiancially.  A quality prospect at 3B for the Express (Hooks?), Added bully option.  No more uncertainty with Lidge and his much bemoaned stuff trusting.  C. Qualls and Sarfate bump up a chair.   Gain a trade pawn in Scott.
