since the "no-hitter", he can't get out of the 2nd vs. the Cardinals, gets flustered and leaves in the 5th v. the Mets, and is getting clubbed, with an able assist from the keystone cops behind him, in what cubbie commentators have called a "must win", maybe they need to move their games to Milwaukee?  He seems distracted.

Fuck Zambrano and Fuck the Cubs.

He's completely flustered.  Soto, who has never showed any hint of yips, is afraid to throw the ball back because he doesnt know when Zambrano is paying attention.

Don't worry, he's totally calm... nothing a little rosin couldn't patch right up.

I'll bet, didnt see anything, but I'll bet, when Soto bent over to pick up the rosin, he said something like "are you in the game Carlos?"

Go back further.  In his last 9 starts he's gotten through the 6th only 3 times.  He's been mostly mediocre to bad since the beginning of August.  I think Noe's comment about soreness or injury in another thread is correct.

But in the middle of that, he no hits the Astros.  No one, except us obviously, notices the discrepancy?

The other discrepancy is that he took nearly 2 weeks off prior to that start.  Lots of rest to give his arm enough to go one game, a game against a shell of a team.  Everything lined up for him to pitch well.  Methinks the BBG's were setting the Cubs up for post-season dismemberment.

I'm trying to hold out any kind of celebration until the Cubs are knocked out, because I don't want to tempt them, but watching the Cubs imitation of the Hindenburg is making me one happy guy.

Did anyone catch the comment last night (I cannot remember who said it) about Zambrano's no hitter being thrown at a "neutral site" when the Astros were displaced by the possible threat of Hurricane Ike (or some like term)?  I was in fucking shock because I could have sworn the comment was made in the context that it was not certain that any games would need to be moved, or that it was not certain the storm would hit Houston.  I would love for someone to tell me that I took the comment completely wrong and there are not people in the world that damn ignorant.  Maybe I am just at the point where every comment made about the Astros I take as negative.

There is scene from the god awful movie about Howard Hughes that stars DiCrapio.  In that scene, Hughes is ordering a professor he's hired to predict when the next cloud filled day will happen in California.  The professor-slash-meterologist is perplexed at the request "But Mr. Hughes... "  "NO BUTS!  You find me the next time we can fly and film in some clouds or you're fired!"

Somehow, I get the feeling that Buddy Selig is on the phone with some poor schmuck saying "NO BUTS! You find me some rain clouds to hover over Chavez Ravine so I can step in and move the freaking NLDS Game 3 back to Wrigley... or you're fired!"

DiCrapio hamming it up as Howard Hughes was an abomination.  The movie may of been a good idea, but quite frankly, it was one step above a reality show starring Howard Hughes (With DiCrapio sitting in for Mr. Hughes) than actually a movie of some sort of substance.  IMHO of course.

The "atmosphere" shots of the crowd were fantastic.  The only time I felt a twinge of guilt was when they showed a father explaining to his young son that he better get used to this shit and understand that, if he lives to be 100, he might never see the Cubs win a world series.  I only hope that kid doesn't grow up to be a serial killer.

He's too pretty to play roles that require gravitas.  He does his best, but the best thing that could happen to him would be an industrial accident*.

Of course, I never thought in a gazillion years that Matt Damon could be an action hero.

When they showed a shot of Zambrano crying in his towel, all I could say was "There is no crying in baseball!"  I felt no twinge of empathy for him or his team given the amount of shenanigans and manipulations that went on the last month or so.  I can't really blame the Cubs for taking advantage of all that was handed to them, but to act like you've done something marvelous when in fact you know and anyone else who pays attention beyond a sound bite you actually have not.  Stay humble or the BBGs will humble you.

BTW - it ain't over, the Cubs will make the Dodgers squirm the next two games and possibly bring it back to Wrigley for one more Zambrano moment.  You heard it here first.  And Zambrano won't do any better the next time around either.

Tommy Lee Jones' characterization of Howard Hughes left quite an impression, kinda like Kurt Russell's outstanding Elvis, both of which were TV movies.  That was the first time I recall seeing TLJ in anything.

Who else has tried to play Hughes?  Terry O'Quinn in The Rocketeer, a fun waste of time.  I'll watch just about anything with Alan Arkin in it.  I don't think one can include the character that Jason Robards played in this discussion.

Possible? Does no one realize that the Astros had to leave town immediately after Ike tore through the region? Things that have already happened are not possibilities.

Really?  He was in "The Santa Clause 3 -- The Escape Clause" as well as a lot of other junk over the past 35+ years (since the highpoint of his career in the late 60s and early 70s).  And he does seem to play a lot of very similar roles.  That being said, he was awesome in Little Miss Sunshine and in Slums of Beverly Hills.  And I loved him in Indian Summer -- an oft-ignored film.  His smaller roles in Grosse Pointe Blank and So I Married an Axe Murderer were also notable.  Arkin seems to me to be one of those actors who peaked really early and filled much of his career with forgetable movies until he was finally able to play more distinguished roles as they became age appropriate.

The operative words in my statement were "just about", but I hear you; it sounds like there might be some painful selections for me to endure were I to be true to my word on that pronouncement.  I mean, I have five kids, and I wasn't aware that there was a Santa Claus 3.  Is it too late to make a distinction between "watch" and "go see" ?

Your analysis of his career decline,as well as its apparent resuscitation, is probably what keeps a lot of people out there trying to hang on and get that second big break.  Jack Palance comes to mind, as well, though there have been plenty of others.

Michael Caine is the actor who really comes to mind for me.  60s and early 70s, he was a matinee idol.  Then he has like 30 years where he just does one crappy movie after another (with a couple of decent roles in the middle -- like Hannah does her Sisters). Then he gets the Cider House Rules, and all of the sudden he is in demand for some really great roles.

Not really, just wishful thinking on my part that the Cubs would take the next two and make the pain more glorious when Zambrano spits the bit again in Wrigley.  I can't help it, I'm in that mood today.  I was not particularly sympathetic to anything Cub last night and it has not worn off at all.  My prediction is solid, my wish in this thread is me letting my emotions take over.
