For the first time in 20 years, there is no #7 in the opening day lineup.

A new era has begun.

Speaking of folks we won't be seeing in the lineup today, Everett just missed a grand slam in the 8th by about 2 feet (foul).  Ended up flying out to left (0-4).  Lamb is 1-3 (IBB), RBI.

Everett made the last out in the game.  It was fun seeing them with their new team on OD.  Too bad the Twins' series against Baltimore and Washington are in MN.

And now for the dawn of Explosive Everything.  I'm fucking excited, even if I have to listen to ESPN's talking heads.  At least Morgan went to MN.

Do they still stream the radio online somewhere?  Or was that done away with?

See, had Pence just been patient, Bourn would be sitting at second base and Pence would have Peavy in a position to have to challenge him.  Man, I hope Pence learns how to hit second because he could be good, but sometimes the nickname "Spaz" fits him well.

Or play small ball and bunt him to third like a good #2 should do, especially against a tough pitcher like Peavy.

Well, they made Peavy work for those outs... except for Pence.  I know he's aggressive and all, but you think someone might be talking to him on the bench about "situational" approaches, not just grip it and rip it.  Against a quality, Cy Young candidate like Peavy, you got to have an idea about the situation.

But overall, looks like we're going to have more and more about these types of situations this year and if so, this will be a fun offensive season for the local nine.

True, but they're both paid to drive in runs, so swing the bats.  Against Peavy, it's not a sin to look to take a pitch to right (as I saw Tejada try three times... freaking great approach).  It may seem like they helped Peavy, but they were basically doing their job as middle of the lineup hitters... IMHO of course.

Ausmus is genius.  Nursing Roy after he got hit, then against Gonzalez, with the runner on 3rd, Roy could throw sliders in the dirt, the slow curve, anything with authority.

Sorry if Cabrera's a Brave on my second post, but whats the deal with Chacon suiting up with 32? Per the official page, it states that he changed his number from that ridiculous 1 to Jim Umbricht's retired number. ...and "whats on tap" reaffirmed it. I don't understand how they can just pull something down off the rafters.

Bottom 6: Oswalt still pitching (Borkowski warming up in the pen).

McAnulty (2-2): fb, b, ss, fb, fb, fb, b, ss (strikeout, 6th for Oswalt).  1 out, none on.
Peavy (1-1, sacrifice, 2 RBIs): b, cs, ss, b (checked swing), b, b (walk, 1st onf the night for Roy). 1 out, runner on 1B, Borkowski coming in to pitch for Roy.
Giles (0-3): b, b, cs, b, ss, b (walk).  1 out, runners on 1B and 2B.
Iguchi (2-3, 2 doubles, run): b, b, fb, cs, b (just missed), looper into shallow center, Peavy holds at 3B. 1 out, bases loaded.
Kouzmanoff (1-3): b (barely missed hitting him, Aumus out to talk with Borkowski), b (nice pitch), fb, fb, b, fb, (Moehler warming up in the bullpen), fb, grounder to 3B, Wigginton bobbles the ball so has to go home for the force out (should have been a DP).  2 outs, bases loaded.
Gonzalez (2-3, 2 singles, RBI): deep drive into center, Bourn gets a great jump, turns on the jets and gets to the ball for the out.  Great play, saves 3 runs. The kid has looked good tonight!

End 6: HOU 0, SD 3

Roy's line: 5.1 IP, 11H, 3R, 3ER, 1BB, 6SO.  113 pitches (74S, 39B).  A number of softly hit balls off Roy, as well as a couple of screamers.  Didn't look as bad as the numbers (hits) might reflect, but not steller Roy either.

The man can move.    First play I ever saw him make was similar to that one in the college classic at MMPUS as a freshman.
There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.

Wigginton (0-2): flied out to CF. 1 out, none on.
Loretta (1-2): b, b, cs, fb, fb, fb, b, b (walk, 3rd of game by Peavy).  [Nice approach again by Loretta.  Looks better suited to hit 2nd than Pence]
Erstad (ph for Ausmus): cs, b (two warming up in the pen for the Padres), b, fb, roller to 2B for out, Loretta advances. 2 outs, runner on 2B.
Blum (ph in pitchers spot, here's your chance for some payback...): b, flied out to center field.

Top 7: Moehler pitching, Towles in for Ausmus.

Hairston (0-3): cs, b, fb, b, fb (nice pitch in on the hands), soft grounder to Wigginton, quick release, and nice backhand in the dirt by Berkman, 1 out.
Green:s, lined single into LF, odd approach by Lee (JD says it looked like he might have lost it in the light).  1 out, runner on 1B.
Bard: b, cs, b (way inside), tapped to 1B, Berkman touches the bag for the second out (no chance for DP, runner going). 2 outs, runner on 2B.
McAnulty (2-3, 2 singles): cs, ft, b (Wright warming up in the bullpen), b, b, fb, b (friggin' walk, geez). 2 outs, runners on 1B and 2B.
Tony Clark (ph for Peavy): [Coop out to the mound], singles into CF, runner scores.  2 outs, runners on 1B and 2B.  HOU 0, SD 4.
Giles (0-3, walk) [Wesley Wright coming in from the pen - MLB debut]: fb, b, b, b (outside), fb, ground out to Tejada. Nice MLB debut for the kid.

End 7: HOU 0, SD 4

Top of the order due up for Houston in the Top of the 8th.  GO STROS!

The expectations put on Pence this season drive me nuts.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

I don't know of anyone whose opinion is trustworthy who expects Pence to do anything other than continue to prove himself a good hitter. He's not going to hit .340. No one is. Maybe Ichiro. You can't sit Pence on opening day, but later in the year I would be all over starting Erstad rather than Pence against an all-world RHP like Peavy.

Speaking of, what Peavy does when he gets two strikes on a batter is magical.

Tejada shows the baserunning skills he learned in Oakland.

Either that or Berkman was in charge of the ST drills.

Only other team to get shut out today was the Giants. Very inauspicious company.

Tejada had a good night hitting. Not so much on the thinking end.

Top 9: Meredith pitching

Tejada (1-3): cs, line drive into center for Tejada, tries to stretch it into a double but gets thrown (replay looks close). 1 out.
Wigginton (0-3): ground out to SS.
Loretta (1-2, single, walk): b, ss, groundout to 3B.  Ballgame.

The good news is the pitching held the opposing team to four runs! The bad news is the rejiggered lineup scored zero.

Same old same old.

It wasn't all bad.  Bourn was fun to watch on the basepaths and in the field.  Tejada's ABs were good (despite the overly aggressive baserunning).  Geary and Wright with good outings.

Exactly. You have to think that if the team ERA is 4 this team will win a lot of games. More games than the Pirates, anyway.

Speaking of which, check out the box score on their opener today...

He looked good in the field and at the plate today.  Worked the count well, speed as advertised, solid performance all around.  Loretta had some good professional ABs as well.  Tejada was solid at the plate (just a bit over exuberant on the bases), and his fielding was adequate+.  Wesley Wright impressed in his MLB debut too (down 3-1 in the count, but showed some poise in inducing the ground out).

More like monumentally stupid.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

Everett just missed a grand slam in the 8th by about 2 feet (foul).  Ended up flying out to left (0-4).

Baserunning gaffe I'll grant you (especially with none out in the top of the 9th behind by 4 runs), but hardly 'monumentally stupid.'  Personally, I can live with the 'mistake' (i.e. poor decision while trying to make something happen, hence the use of 'over exuberant').

Overall, I liked what I saw from Tejada last night.  Using the oft frowned upon cliche, dudes a 'gamer' (plays hard, plays with desire and has skills).
