Last trip to Shea...
« on: August 22, 2008, 02:44:10 pm »
Last trip to Shea, Oswalt v Santana.  It's time to blow Shea up, and for the Astros take a bite out of the Big Apple boys play-off chances.  Personally, the only good that ever happened in that dump was Game 4 of the '86 Play-offs and the 1965/66 appearances by the Beatles.

Mess fans are worried what will become of the Home Run Apple in the new ballpark.

[The Apple is] ... one of the most electrifying home run displays in all of baseball! says Bob Carpenter MASN announcer.

Who doesn't get a tingle watching papier mache fruit slowly rise out of a top hat?  But the worry is that the iconic old apple is going to be replaced by a shiny new apple. The steM Mgt. says there will be a Home Run Apple in the new park but fans say that the old one has just the right urine smell.  They even, in the tradition of true fans everywhere, have a petition.  The petition ends with this long shot plea, "We beg of you to Save the Apple and hope that you will take us seriously"

I got it.

I did, too. I was just doubly stunned because beyond being surprised at Jim's entertaining bon mot, having been to Shea 20 times in my life I'm not sure I realized that fucking apple did anything. Maybe it's because every time Jay Powell would come in and give up a grand slam I would lower my head into my hands for five minutes and miss all the electrifying excitement.

It would be better if, after each homer, the new Apple tumbled down a big twisty slide, jumped up and then waved its ass around a little. And had a moustache.

If I'm the steM owner I would take people seriously that wants to "save the apple" because it has just the right urine smell.

Of course I would also trade Reyes and Wright to the Astros for Backe and 2 of the Astros elite prospects.

Shea is a dump but it holds one of my favorite childhood baseball memories.  On a family vacation, we went and saw the Mets & the Reds play.  Rose got his 37th consecutive game with a hit.

Yeah, it is kind of a dump. It seems like they've allowed it to go to seed, since they started the new ballpark. I had a good time there last night. Most of the people were friendly. There sure are a lot of Wright's and Reyes' milling about the stadium. Saw more Astros gear than I had anticipated.

Speaking of Rose, I almost ran into him last week when I was in Vegas with my dad.  Rose was hawking autographs and pictures as always.  Charlie Hustle yammering on a cell phone, never took his Bluetooth earpiece out.

Rose is a tool, but he's a baseball tool.

I have a friend who grew up in Delaware as a Phils fan. He tells a story of running into Pete Rose somewhere, possibly in a restaurant, and somehow getting Pete Rose to call my friend's ailing mother who was in the hospital. Pete stayed on the phone with her for the better part of half and hour chatting amiably.

I bet I've heard that fucking story 20 times.

Shea was a dump when they built it.
