the names so far
« on: December 05, 2007, 09:28:25 am »
names named in trade deals, etc., that I've heard so far,

Double-A catcher Nick Hundley (Padres)

The Astros and Red Sox are among teams said to have expressed interest in Brian Fuentes (Rockies)

Rockies offered utilityman Clint Barmes for the Astros' Chris Burke

The Astros and Padres discussed packages involving prospects Nick Hundley, Will Venable, Josh Geer and Wade LeBlanc. (for Luke Scott, etc)

Chad Cordero, ...Bowden has a high asking price for Cordero. (Example: He asked the Brewers for Rickie Weeks and was turned down.) He's also talked to the Astros and been unsuccessful so far. (Burke and Qualls)

Miguel Tejada The probability of the teams reaching an agreement were downgraded from a two on a scale of one to 10 to "zero" by a Major League source on Tuesday.

Joe Nathan

White Sox "unnamed" pitcher, but a White Sox sources advised "not look too much into it."

free-agent LHP Ron Mahay, who has narrowed his list of serious suitors to the Rays, Yankees, Royals, Giants and Astros.

Molony reports, several deals fell through for the Astros this week

"[If] you had some of the stuff that's happened to us in the last 30 hours or so happen, it would drive you nuts to go through that," Wade said with a slight chuckle. "It's nice to have some things done."

What player(s) would the Astros need to combine with Chris Burke for Fuentes?  Albers maybe +?

I hope we dont trade Burke to Colorado because it seems like that is the best spot for Loretta to end up. If Loretta signs with Colorado, then we get a draft pick and then we can trade Burke to another team.
why not?

True, but the Astros lose Loretta.

The Rockies said Qualls + Mid-level starter (assumption: Wandy Rodriquez, Troy Patton, Chris Sampson, Matt Albers).  I'm not sure if they also want Burke in that deal too.  That would be a three for one and that's too pricey.

Affeldt... Fuentes... Mahay...etc.

The Astros have offered reverT arbitration, I think (hope) he stays.

Deadline is tomorrow for their decisions, right?

Right, don't know if it's the stroke of midnight (eastern) or some other time.

I can't see the Astros making another deal for a middle infielder (Barmes) or a lefty without knowing the fate of Miller and Loretta.

for Brian Fuentes ?  Sheesh.  That guy was a gas can in the playoffs.  He gave up huge insurance runs in Games 3 and 4 of the World Series, as well as giving up that 3 run bomb to catcher Chris Snyder in the final game of the NLCS.

Not to mention 4 straight blown saves, a 30.86 ERA at MMP last year, etc.  I'll pass unless it's really cheap.

I'd like to see Mahay.

These free agent relievers are asking for and getting a lot of money.  The Brewers just signed David Riske and are going to use him as a closer.  3 years/13 million.  4.3 million per year and then incentives if he hits certain closer money.  This is a guy who has been a setup man.

I fear what Mahay may be asking for.

Reports on Mahay are 3/$12M, so that's about right.  The htird year on a 36-year old is all that bothers me there.

Houston did.  The Rockies are said to be very non-committal to moving Fuentes any way, hence why they're asking for a lot if the other team is serious about getting him.  Boston was interested as well, but who knows at this point.

This for a guy who, while he was a good pitcher at Texas, wasn't really a key cog in the bullpen.  He went to Atlanta in the Tex deal almost as a throw-in.

12 million bones for three years for a reliever who throws left handed.  Outstanding!

Lefties got 7 extra base hits off him in 106 AB last year.

OVer the last 3 years, lefties hit .234/.302/.412 against him.

Compare to reverT, who gave up .233/.326/.385 over the same span.

The difference?  Mahay can face a RHB.

(Rosenthal) Free-agent left-hander Glendon Rusch, ... is drawing interest from three other NL Central teams — the Reds, Astros and Cardinals.

I despise that guy...I'd love to see his numbers against the Astros....he frick'n owned'm.  To be honest...I specifically remember this during his years with MIL and CHI...not sure about KC and the other team (NYM?) he played with.

If he owned the Stros, it was inconsistently so.

Overall, in 111.2 IP against the Astros, he is 7-6, 4.11 ERA.  AT MMP, in 48.2 IP, he is 3-3 with a 4.44 ERA.

I stand corrected....Wow, I still feel like I remember him taking shoutout after shutout to the 6th-7th inning but obviously I'm wrong.

You might have been thinking of the dozens other pitchers the Astros would make look like a HOFers.

Backup 1B/OF, good lefthanded bat off the bench. It's not crazy.

I haven't watched Erstad play hardly at all (what? There's an American League?), but his numbers over the past few years don't look very nice. Does he really qualify as a "good" bat anymore, even off the bench, at this point in his career?
