Boston, 7 years, 142 mil

There's no way St. Louis can afford Pujols now, right?  He has to be worth at least 60 mil per year if we are using the Crawford/Werth deals as comps.

All of which goes to show, Boras screwed up real bad not holding out for a 40 year, $880 mil contract for Bryce Harper, who's clearly better than all those guys.

I think I'm becoming so numb to the amount of millions these guys make that the length of the contract shocks me more.

The A-Rod deal was already being looked at as the standard.  Which, of course, means that after his next contract he'll be able to buy the Dominican Republic.

Seven years for a 29 year old is defensible.

It'll be a helluva albatross if he blows out a knee in year 3.  Not saying it's not a reasonable price for a player of his caliber, just that there are no guarantees.

Insurance.  You'd rather he get hurt than just turn plain shitty and remain on the roster.

Sure, but it's not like they signed Carlos Lee to a 7 year deal.  Crawford is 29, posesses a lean body type, and while he has some pop, his value isn't based on his ability to hit for power.  Based on what we can see, he's the type who should age well.

Unless his legs are the first thing to go, then at the tail end of his contract you're paying $20M+ for Johnny Damon.
You may ask yourself, "How do I work this?"

But with Boston paying Gonzalez (1B) and Crawford and New York paying Texiera (1B) and ARod and CC, I'd say that Albert's ability to drive up the market price is severely diminished.  The two richest teams aren't in the running.

I didn't think teams could get policies anymore.  Maybe I dreamt it.  I just assume the people negotiating these contracts used to package CMOs at Lehman.

Good point, but there's still the west coast dollars (Anaheim...maybe LA?) and it looks like the Nats don't have any reservations locking up ridiculous contracts.

I'd be quite happy for Pooholes to go to the AL.

7 years at $25M/yr, on the other hand, for Cliff Lee (as ESPN radio reported) is absolute insanity.
