Former Astro Catcher Chris Snyder, trying for a job with the Nats, just jacked a HR off Sean Marcum. Baseball is back!

And then sparks says "Altuve is the perfect #2 hitter. He doesn't walk much or take a lot of pitches. He just quickly puts the ball in play, and that's exactly what you want from a two hole hitter."

Ford kinda sounds like DoRay, but what I have heard he sounds fine.  I have always enjoyed Sparks.
There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.

He's doing a good job describing the action as it happens. I've always liked sparks as well. It's good to have a knuckle baller's perspective.

He must have been joking, right? It's almost like he was listing all the ways he's NOT a perfect #2 hitter, he just left out that he bats right-handed.

Harrell sure does work fast.

That's one of his best characteristics. It keeps the fielders sharp. Dawdling pitchers risk a fielder losing attention span at the wrong time.

The radio broadcast is not too bad. Ford seems somewhat knowledgable, and Sparks, his Altuve homer brainfart notwithstanding, is pretty good.

Help me out with a box score nit here: it says that JD Martinez stole 2nd in the 4th inning. It also says he scored a run. But hadn't Grossman pinch-run for JD? The SB and Run should be his.

I'm pretty sure the run is still scored to the batter, not the pinch runner.  Maybe it's the same for the steal?

No. Probably just a scoring mistake. No names on unis. Lots of switches. The PR definitely gets credit for both the SB and the run.

And then sparks says "Altuve is the perfect #2 hitter. He doesn't walk much or take a lot of pitches. He just quickly puts the ball in play, and that's exactly what you want from a two hole hitter."

Ouch.  I think Sig and Goldstein need to give this fella a lesson.

1 - 1 after 2 innings hosting the Mets. I like the radio guys so far. Ford has a nice voice and refrains from non-baseball banter, Sparks actually played the game.

What a novel approach, having an ex-player offer analysis instead of a second pbp man in the booth?!?!?!

Valdez picks off a pinch runner off of 2B. That'll cost that dumbass some money in the kangaroo court.

Springer works a walk, and DDSjr comes in from third when ball four gets by the catcher. I should probably turn it off now, before the heartbreak comes.

I started listening when we were down 6-1. I like the aggressive play a lot. We may not have much real big league talent, but we can be aggressive and speed the game up for the opposition.

I love putting the onus on the other guy to make a play. You don't have to do stupid things, but it seems like there are lots of opportunities to press the issue that go unexploited. I'm specifically thinking about first-to-third and advancing on deep flies. Yeah, you'll get thrown out every once in a while, but on balance I think you'll come out ahead.

When Lyles misses, he tends to catch too much plate when he does. Did the Rays stack the lineup with lefties, because Lyles hasn't shown me yet that he can get them out.

Heck if I know. The lineup he faced was: Zobrist, Roberts, Longoria, Anderson, Duncan, Myers, Cust, Fuld, Lobaton. Longoria had two singles, Zobrist a double and Anderson a triple.

Gamecast or whatever the hell it is had Lyles with 13 pitches through 1.2 innings, all strikes. I don't see how that's possible. It also says the wind is blowing out to left at 25 mph.

Bottom of the 1st...all pitches hit yet he only gave up one run.

Bottom of the 2nd...all pitches hit until the last batter Duncan who strikes out on three pitches.

Meanwhile, the other side of the split isn't doing as well against the Rays.

7-2 in the 6th.

That game just now called a final due to rain. 7-2 Rays.

Game tidbits of interest: While Castro hit his second HR, he had his first passed ball. Nine strikeouts for our hitters into the eighth frame. Wallace with three hits and an error playing 3B.

Bottom of the 1st...all pitches hit yet he only gave up one run.

Bottom of the 2nd...all pitches hit until the last batter Duncan who strikes out on three pitches.

ETA: By "hit" I mean "in play".
Last year Gameday did not count pitches (or at least not all the time) in ST games ... is it possible they just recorded the pitches "hit"?

Yep. Walks seem to be on four pitches, strikeouts on three, and balls in play on one. Haven't paid enough attention to know if it's always the case, but that's what I've noticed.

Castro follows Ankiel's triple with a homer to put them up 2-1.

Castro seems to be developing a power stroke. He finished last season with several in the last few days. He's getting his legs under him.

Today's lineup, per McTaggart:

Greene-SS
LF-Grossman
1B-Wallace
LF(?)-J.D. Martinez
DH-F. Martinez
3B-Dominguez
C-Corporan
CF-Springer
2B-Deshields
P-White

Should be fun.  Looking forward to how DDS does in a start and Springer does covering CF and RF while Grossman and J.D. have a picnic in LF.

Probably.  The insta-pundits on Twitter speculate that a strong spring could land him in OKC to start the season, with a September call-up if they're okay with starting his service time clock.

Not me. If he's not ready, then he's not ready. ST AB's often are meaningless because the pitcher might have been out there to work on a developing pitch, etc.

Jeez, I hope not. Like jbm mentioned above, he still has some things to prove, and didn't exactly tear up AA in his end-of-year Corpus cameo. I think 2014, with 2015 being his first full year.

One really encouraging sign today. The pitchers induced 12 groundball outs and seven strikeouts. Keeping the ball on the ground is going to be key in the AL.

Cosart has been incredibly good, throughout his minor league career, at getting ground balls and particularly keeping the ball in the park. Last year in AA, 3 HR in 87 IP. In AAA, 0 HR in 27.2 IP. Hopefully he keeps that up when he gets to Houston.

I have noted those stats on Cosart. That's often a trait that pitchers continue when they advance to a higher level. I am encouraged by Cosart.

I'm curious, why did you say Greene at SS would make it a "long season for right-handed pitchers"? I would think it would be even worse for lefties, where the opposing lineup would often be stacked with RH hitters, resulting in more balls to the left side of the infield.

6-4 Astros leading the Braves through 7. J. D. Martinez and Pena have homered for the Good Guys. Keuchel worked two scoreless, Humber three and gave up one run. Owens got slapped around and Fick is pitching now.

6-4 Astros leading the Braves through 7. J. D. Martinez and Pena have homered for the Good Guys. Keuchel worked two scoreless, Humber three and gave up one run. Owens got slapped around and Fick is pitching now.

I'm now listening and here.

I know I'm nuts, but I'm starting to actually enjoy Ford and Sparks. They're relaxed but seem to work together well, filling air but not choking it to death.

Strike-'em-out-throw-'em-out double play ends the game and the Astros win, 6-5. I think that's five ST wins for Houston so far.

Astros and Piroots are knotted at 5. Apparently a very cold day in Bradenton. Folty had his first big league ST appearance, striking out one (looking on the outside corner) and walking one in one frame.

+1 I didn't think that there was any chance that he makes the club; now, I'm thinking that if they broke camp today, Grossman would be one of the 25.

We're down early to Detroit 3-0, and Cosart, et al. have issued six free passes through three full frames. A walk-a-thon is not a way to make a club.

White pitches around two walks to throw a goose egg in the fourth. Seven walks through four. Contrast that with Porcello, who worked four scoreless frames, striking out six and walking none.

Me, too, and Porcello's still very young and a few more years of club control. He could be a good fit but I can't imagine Detroit is really looking to deal him. Here is the link. http://houston.astros.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20130304&content_id=42249400&vkey=news_hou&c_id=hou

Caught part of the replay.  Chapman looked good.  Real tough on lefties.  The Tigers announcing crew said Maxwell's homer was as long as they have seen at that park. When he gets a hold of one, it really goes.

WW got dinged for a hit and a walk in .1 frames, both of which scored, courtesy of the fine work of WW's replacement, who was some guy named Peacock. Peacock clearly had nothing today, surrendering three hits and three runs (two earned) in .2 frames.

Greene with his fourth error at SS already. Pitching is going to be an adventure with him at SS. An exercise in acute aggravation with constantly having to get four outs in an inning too often.

I'm happy for him. Hope he makes a team. Sorry it didn't work out here.

Same here. However, he had his chances, and it was time to move on.

Greene with his fourth error at SS already. Pitching is going to be an adventure with him at SS. An exercise in acute aggravation with constantly having to get four outs in an inning too often.
I see this as a most excellent result ... lowering, as it does, the probability that he will make any errors at SS during the regular season (at least in an Astros uni).

I see your point. However, you must understand that I view this through the prism of a pitcher. Anytime that you are asked to get four (or more) outs in the same inning, it adds to your inning pitch count by keeping you out there longer than you should have been, which can detract from later innings performance and cut short your game appearance. If pitch count means anything, and that is debatable, I have always been open to the possibility that pitch count in a particular inning may have some importance because of fatigue from being out there for so long without a rest.

You also have the fact that some pitchers don't have as much command out of the stretch while worrying about a baserunner (or more) who shouldn't be out there. The longer you are out there in the same frame, the greater the likelihood of the other team scoring from their traffic.

Finally, you have some pitchers who mentally can't get past errors and make bad pitches because they are pissed off at their alleged fielders for putting them in that position instead of focusing more attention on their next offering. Big league pitchers should be able to buck up and be.able to get past errors, but they are human too and sometimes you just can't, especially when one bad apple is causing the problem.

For this reason, I'd prefer to see the surest hands and arm at SS, and that ain't Greene.

I'm not sure you do see my point, actually.  One of us has misplaced his sarc-o-meter.  Surely you are not suggesting that I was suggesting that Greene will somehow use up his limited supply of errors in ST?  My point was, let him screw up every opportunity in the hopes that the powers-that-be will release his ass and let MarGo (who is currently sporting a nine-forty-something OPS, by the way) play everyday at SS.

Thus lowering the probability that Greene will make any errors there.

I'll be listening to today's game against the Nationals. Your lead off hitter, coming in at .118 with four errors, is one Tyler Greene. Watch him have a big day today.

It's like a bad comedy routine: Sparks ask Crane a question, as Crane is about to answer, Milo jumps in with a question to Sparks like Crane isn't even in the booth.  Oblivious is the word that comes to mind.

Listened to Sparks interview Humber post-game.  Holy mother of god, I forgot what professionals could bring to the table.

Humber mentions that he's flying open during his delivery?  Sparks first explains what flying open physically is, and then asks Humber how he combats that.

Sparks is sugar coating it but Lyles getting blasted again.  Control problems early led to a 2 run homerun to Freeman.  Since then a couple of bad defensive plays and a few more hits.  5-0 Braves still only one out

There were some dink hits and a couple of bad plays behind him, but Lyles continues to have problems pitching through adversity as well as to lefties as I mentioned earlier. Sometimes, a pitcher has to take the game over and get a strikeout or break a bat.

Rather than a Race for the Lid maybe we should have a pool that solicits guesses for when Porter will first employ a double switch.

First NL game?

Listening to the pre-game right now, Dennis Martinez being interviewed. Walrus at 3B alert. I'm not certain, but I don't think that he has played an error-free game at the hot corner yet.

Makes the runs unearned, thus driving up pitcher value.

It's quite brilliant.

Meanwhile, the steM are pasting us right now, 8-2 in the top of the fifth frame. The good news is that Pena hit an opposite field home run. The hitters have only two hits.

He didn't get charged with an error today, but he still misplayed two balls, one of which was an inability to handle a throw from Fernando Martinez that allowed a run to score, for which Martinez was charged with the error. Good guys mount another late comeback and make it interesting in the ninth inning, but Parnell induced a comebacker to end it. 9-6 steM. We're 6-7 now.

Ford said that while the throw was bad, Wallace still kicked it around, and I was given the impression that Ford thought that Wallace should have been able to keep the ball in front of him, which would have prevented the run from scoring.

Astros down 2-1 now in the fifth inning, and the Phils are still threatening. Team ERA for ST now sits at 5.58, which is probably not too far from where it'll be when the season ends.

You're probably right about that. 2-1 Phightins Top 6 Hamels threw five frames of one hit ball. I'd say that he's shaping up well for the regular season.

Astros fall again, 7-1, mustering only a first inning leadoff double by Tyler Greene. Team ERA now 5.73. Sparks and Ford thought that Peacock opened some eyes today and that he'd be in Houston at some point during the season.

You are correct, sir. He'd been battling command had gotten spanked in one outing. Sparks said that, in the third inning today, Peacock was getting three of his pitches over the plate. If he can do that consistently, he'll be successful because hitters won't know what to expect at any time.

Why, in God's name, does Porter feel the need to comfort Tyler Greene when he decided to start MG at SS today?

Quote
“He hadn’t played shortstop in four-five games,” Porter said. “We wanted to make sure that we’re keeping it balanced. I called Eduardo and I talked to Tyler also. He said, ‘Bo, we’re good.’”

Is Greene that locked in above Marwin?

I know he has, but thought it was more open than having to explain to a guy why he isn't starting.  Marwin has played generally well, and was relatively impressive last year given what was asked of him.  Greene has yet to show much of anything...here or in STL.

Another interesting “non-prospect” due to his age is Lo, a chunky right-hander who is coming off a couple of elbow injuries (red flags) and will be 27 as next year opens. That said, I think he could be a good bullpen arm for the Astros this coming season. Lo’s fastball ranges from 88-96 but typically sits around 92-93. He throws a tight slider (due to his ¾ arm slot this may actually be more of a short-break curve/slurve) at 84-85 that appears to be a strong strikeout offering. He has a change-up and it plays up due to his other offerings.

Lyles gives up four hits and two more runs to give him a three earned runs in three innings on six hits. Not encouraging. Keuchel gives up three earnies in two frames. Astros drop one 9-7.

They said Lyles made some adjustments to his delivery, and Lyles thinks he is progressing.  I guess he'll have a few more chances to change things.  I still think if he has a couple of good outings, he'll make the club, but I'm always the optimist when it comes to Lyles.

Top of the 9th today, down 6-3 to the Nats.  Marvin and Frieman going yard for our offense.  Ely looks like he took it on the chin with 1 1/3 IP and 4 earned runs.

Ely looks like he took it on the chin with 1 1/3 IP and 4 earned runs.

Wasn't paying an abundance of attention, but there was plenty of praise coming from the booth in Ely's first inning of work. Locating pitches, changing speeds. It all fell apart in his second inning. Filled the bases and Owings cleared them for him.

They said Lyles made some adjustments to his delivery, and Lyles thinks he is progressing.  I guess he'll have a few more chances to change things.  I still think if he has a couple of good outings, he'll make the club, but I'm always the optimist when it comes to Lyles.

I can't disagree with you about Lyles given his age and stuff, but he hasn't shown me any signs of progressing this spring. He still is demonstrating problems getting left-handed hitters out, which is a huge problem. He's got to solve that problem.

Sitting out in the sun in Scottsdale waiting for the Rangers-Giants game to start and feeling pretty damn grateful to be here, which was my reward to myself for missing my 6:10 a.m. flight to Denver and then onto Missoula.

The good nws about today's loss is that we held them to only three runs, with Lo giving up two in one frame. The bad news is that we could muster only two hits and lose 3-0.

Rangers lose 5-2 behind Matt Cain and two Giants no doubter home runs, one by Gunther. The yard in Scottsdale, which seats 12,000, was sold out, is big in dimension: 360 down the line to LF and 430 to CF. No cheap ones there.

Harrell goes four innings of shutout ball, walking two and striking out three in a 49 pitch performance. Seven ground ball outs for Harrell. Fields on to pitch the bottom of the sixth, but the Nats are threatening with runners on second and third with one out to Bryce Harper. Still 1-0 Astros.

Morrow is a good pitcher, though. Bedard had a hellofa line today and I see Jason Castro, slugger, knocked #4 out. So did Laird who seems to be making a real push to make this club.

Outside of Morrow and Rajai Davis, the lineup today wasn't anywhere close to their opening day lineup. Lots of days off for their regulars today.

Also interesting to me is that Glynn Davis is starting at 1st for Baltimore today and hitting cleanup.

In the Astros game: Lyles gives up another run in the second and continues to lower his ERA.

The mayor of San Antonio or his twin brother?

Neither is named Jason.  Julian Castro is the mayor and Joaquín Castro is his brother.

I checked his ST stats. 1.93 ERA in 4 IP, for whatever that's worth.

He got nicked for an earnie today in one frame today. Given that he's only thrown four innings tells me that he's probably headed for AAA.

He was in the WBC which should explain his lack of innings.

Good point, but based upon his poor showing last season, he probably should start in AAA.

AA and AAA would be pretty crowded.

You make a good point. However, my point was that, in my opinion, Cruz didn't show me that he'd developed enough command of his clearly plus stuff (I saw a plus fastball and a plus slider at times) to stay in the big leagues. I think that he could benefit from a half-season or so at AAA working within Brocail's overall system.

If memory serves Cruz was one of the most relaible bullpen arms at the beginning of last season.

ETA.
After looking over last years numbers.  He had a real good April, and a fantastic September.  Didn't walk a single batter in September over 8 and a third innings

Well, he throws hard and has the kind of arm you'd like in your system, but he's got control problems. Hopefully a little time in AAA will help to correct some of that.

He went through a stretch in July and August that was truly awful. It's a testament to what they think of his arm that they kept him on the club the whole season, because he was brutal then.

Given his rule 5 status and the lack of any other option in the system not sure it was that much of a stretch.  Plus he wasn't even the worst guy in the pen at the time.  Cordero and EDR were in the pen.

I'm not sure that I agree with you. I bet that the only reasons that they kept him were his potential and the lack of other options at the time, because otherwise, RB is correct, the game performance was not there in July and August. He needs to work on his consistency.

Honestly, sounds like we are on the same page.  The only reason his rule 5 status would matter is because of his potential.  And we agree on the lack of other options.  Certainly he would of had a stint in the minors if it wasn't for rule 5.  (Mosty likely the 12 day stint in June where he didn't see game action would have been at AAA)

Greene strikes out again in the bottom of the fourth. He came in hitting .139. Surely he has done enough wrong to spare us him being the opening day SS?

I sure hope so. Marwin has hit a very solid .278/.366/.389, and, I assume, played a nice SS as usual. All I see Greene offering, maybe, is the RHB side of a platoon, because Marwin has a lot of trouble with lefties. But really, I'd prefer to see someone who can competently field the position in that role instead. I hear Bobby Crosby got released...

I listened to the whole game. The steM got a bunch of dinks and dunks where he made good pitches inside and got in their kitchens, but they fisted balls just over the infield.

Yeah, two weeks ago I said "F-it" and sent out an email asking all my buddies who wanted to make a spur of the moment 4 day trip to FL for ST.  I was going to head out early this morning and make this the first game of the trip.  I got zero takers.  To be honest, it's all probably for the best (funds, family, etc.), but good grief...my friends and I are getting old.  F-ing George Carlen and his idea that we should all start out life as an elder and finish as a baby.  It's times like this that I think about that bit of his.  I'm quite envious of those that are down there enjoying the rays, beer and baseball.

What would Laird's role be? They already have two-four first basemen, and a regular third baseman, with Wallace possibly getting time there as well. I don't see any room for him (or Freiman for that matter), barring a trade of course.

16 OF appearances in his minor league career, 0 in the bigs. He's put himself in a good position to be the first callup when a corner infielder gets hurt, but it's tough to see a fit on the opening day roster.

Astros playing the Jakes and lead 1-0 Top 4. Bud's been a little shaky, but he has thrown three scoreless.

Astros won 3-2.

Bud went 6 scoreless.
I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing AstroTurf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, torture of Bud Selig.

Bud went 6 scoreless.

He found his release point in about the fourth inning and was free and easy.

Humber is working on a 9 inning shutout streak.

He can do it, but it is a question of whether he will do it again in the regular season.

Same here. He'll probably hit between .240 and .250, but play solid defense in RF and give some gap pop.

Agreed. Greene stunk both in the field and at the plate. Basically, he played his way off of the team, because they had practically given him the starting SS job.
