baseball movie brackets
« on: March 28, 2008, 10:10:18 am »
MLB is doing a "brackets" style contest of baseball movies.  The link is below.  Something to think about (besides the woeful Astros' starting pitching) on the last Friday of the void.

I have Bull Durham taking the whole shooting match.
I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing AstroTurf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, torture of Bud Selig.

Technically, "The Void" ends when ST starts.

I'm shocked you had A League of the Their Own getting past Fever Pitch. Must have been a real tough one for you.

I have to give A League of Their Own props, mostly because Jon Lovitz had the best part in that movie.  "Now if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna go home, shower, shave and give the wife a little pickle tickle" may be the single best line ever spoken in a baseball movie.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

This whole sequence kills me:

Quote
[Ernie sees Dottie and Kit vigorously milking cows]
Ernie Capadino: Ow. Doesn't that hurt them?
Dottie Hinson: Doesn't seem to.
Ernie Capadino: Well, it would bruise the hell out of me.
Dottie Hinson: Can I help you with something?
Ernie Capadino: I'm Ernie Capadino. I'm a baseball scout. I saw you playing today. Not bad, not bad. You ever heard of Walter Harvey, makes Harvey bars - you know, the candy?
Dottie Hinson: Yeah. We feed them to the cows when they're constipated.
Ernie Capadino: That's the guy. He's starting a girls' baseball league, so he can make a buck while the boys are overseas. Wanna play?
Dottie Hinson: Huh?
Ernie Capadino: Nice retort. Tryouts are in Chicago. It's a real league, professional.
Kit Keller: Professional - baseball?
Ernie Capadino: Mmm-hmm. They'll pay you 75 dollars a week.
Kit Keller: We only make 30 at the dairy.
Ernie Capadino: Well then, this would be more, wouldn't it?

Especially the way Lovitz delivers the "it would bruise the hell out of me" and the "this would be more" lines.
I remember all the good times me 'n Miller enjoyed
Up and down the M1 in some luminous yo-yo toy
But the future has to change - and to change I've got to destroy
Oh look out Lennon here I come - land ahoy-hoy-hoy

I had "Bull Durham" over "The Sandlot" in the final.  Some good films and also some really awful stuff.  You've never seen "acting" until you watch Mantle and Maris in "Safe at Home!"

Bad News Bears to take it all.

I'm upset to see Bad News Bears Breaking Training was not a choice.

I've got Ken Burns Baseball over Bad News Bears.  Kelly Lee gets thrown out at the plate to end the game every time.

It would have been a much, much better choice than BNB (Billy Bob edition).

a) It's Kelly Leak
b) If Leak doesn't get thrown out, why would Tanner Boyle have any reason to tell the Yankees to stick the 2nd place trophy up their ass?!?

My brackets had the original Bad News Bears going up against the "new" Bad News Bears.  It wasn't close.  Jackie Earl Haley kicked Jefferies Davies' ass as Kelly Leak.

The remake sucked.  That is all.

It is my experience that nearly all remakes of movies that were once "successful" ussually pale in comparrison.  Although this is not always true of remakes of movies that were not "successful" the first time around.  Maybe that is the old man in me comming out... Wish I'd seen this a week ago.  The wife is out-of-town so I've been on a baseball movie bender courtesy of Netflix.

Just watched 61* today, which I hadn't seen since it was first out.  It's hokey in parts but quite good overall.  And I can't stand the fucking Yankees.

BNB Breaking Training was disappointing, though the late-70s footage of the Astrodome was priceless.

I actually liked the new BNB, though nowhere near as much as the first one.  The scene where an inebriated Billy Bob Buttermaker is throwing BP was so funny I had to watch it twice.

ETA:  Oh, and I also watched a Modern Marvels on ballparks.  Except for the part where they misidentified an old diagram of the layout of Cleveland's League Park for its Municipal Stadium thereby causing me to shake my fist indignantly at the television, it was worthwhile.

ah, nice to see such an important cinematic achievement didn't get totally overlooked...would've thought it would be in Drama bracket, although, ashamed to admit, I've never actually watched the whole thing.

I suppose I shouldn't even bring up Trading Hearts...

Nice avatar. I bought the Orange Box on 360, played about an hour of it and basically couldn't stop until I finished all three. Pretty damn fun and amazing looking in HD.

Or maybe it's simply because it's harder to improve on quality and easier to improve on crummy.
