Monday morning, before my first cup of coffee, and changes?

Seriously, as a regular reader and poster on this site for ten years (or what is commonly known as teh Eusbeio chew-off years), I apprecaite what the inner circles of lunatics does to keep this board alive and McGyver-like dodge death again.

Indeed.  This site does not just magically appear--it takes a lot of work and expense from some good folks who never claim credit.   Well done, boys.

Does that really explain why they changed names? Did the astros/mlb harass them about OWA and/or mudnblood? If so, this is getting a little ridiculous.

Others can go into more depth about it but the PR pretty much covers it.

I must be getting dumber than usual. Is this what you are referring to:

Quote from: PR Statement

So why Spikes and Stars?

The Stars part is simple. We have extremely high opinions of ourselves. Extremely. High. Also, this is still the number one destination on the web for news, commentary and discussion about the Houston Astros. In the future, we hope to bring you even more of what you return here several times a day for.

The Spikes part is our attempt to mark our territory, so to speak, on your cyber-tree. We’re delivering this site high and hard (some of us more high than others). The attitude is unchanged and unwavering.

That kind of explains what the new name means, but not why you'd change it? I'm clearly missing something.

"Over the past several months, we the administrators of The Site Formerly Known as Orangewhoopass.com, have struggled with how best to go about growing the site, highlighting the incredible writing talent we have available to us, and delivering new features while maintaining everything you degenerates have come to expect from this little corner of the interwebs."

I'm not an admin so I'm not comfortable explaining what I know. It's best for me to let them do it. There was nothing sinister going on.

You're not missing anything.  We're attempting to garner more mass appeal for our features. We'd like (for instance) the Bus Ride contributors to be able to approach one of the Astros minor league affiliates without being ignored or fired upon.  The SnS name trumps OWA in that regard.

You're just paranoid if you think there's anything more clandestine than that to the change.

Honestly, was just curious. Basically, it was to get whoopass out of the name to gain a bit more respectability? Makes sense.

Pretty much all it was.  And it took us 18 months to agree on it after using OWA since late 2002/early 2003.

Nothing sinister.  No background shenanigans.  No court orders (or threats thereof) flying around.  Just a choice to revamp the place mostly to bring the original (non-TZ) content back up to the front like it was in the AC days.  If nothing else, it is now abundantly clear that there's 10 years of archived material here.  And, as the PR says, the exceptional coverage of the minors will be heavily showcased.

And for those who want to remain cocooned in a warm, comfy blanket of ignorance, one can also still just go direct to the TZ.
Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen.

No.  It is our intent to provide a clear separation of content and discussion.  We want the editorial content to stand (or fall, in some cases... I won't name names) on its own merit, without the inevitable "great article" or "you suck" comments visible directly underneath.  Furthermore, it would degrade the importance of the TZ's role at SnS.

We will soon be linking directly to recent news and articles at the top of the forum to better integrate the two parts of the site.

More likely, it would be a technical issue. The main page runs off a separate Content Management System than the TZ, and therefore probably has a different user database. Keeping those databases in sync is more trouble than it's worth.

Like the new site name.  The other one had me nervous work folks would think the wrong thing:)

Great work guys!

It takes a village.  We couldn't find one to help, so we relied on the moderators this time and damn if they didn't come through with flying colors!  Who knew!  Any way, we want you all to be very proud of your home and what we plan to do in the coming months should make all of you even more proud.

Stay tuned..

Now.  Everyone go clean up your room!

Am I the only one who had a hard time remembering their password?  I am such an idiot.  To the admins, sorry for all the password reset requests.  Oddly enough, I never got the emails.  Hmmmm, should I take that as a sign I wasn't "invited"?

p.s. Nice work on the site.  While the name that shall not be named will always be special, I like the move and hope those of you who put so much work into the site will finally receive all the appreciation/recognition you deserve.  Does this mean you might actually get a press pass?

So I got to shake the hand of His Clarkness and Luis Pujols Saturday at the Express/Hooks game, and now this!!!!  I gotta get me a lotto ticket!

Side bar, I told Luis he needed to let his hair grow back out...pointed back at me "as soon as you do"!

Clark: 1) (also Clarkish, Clarkworthy, Dave, etc.) descriptive, sarcastic term coined by TZ legend Andyzipp in a now-famous take which serves to strongly emphasize any extraordinary, fantastic or above average feat. (ex. "Biggio stealing third in that situation was absolutely Clark.")

What is negative about that?

I've been lurking since Kev & Scott's Astrosconnection, and I've finally been compelled to post. Being my first post, I'm a little worried I'm going to get my ass handed to me, but I promised myself I wouldn't be a pussy like my dad said I would be. Honestly, I really don't know what makes a good first post, I've seen plenty of them. Initially, I planned on posting a mock help wanted ad asking for prospective pitchers to call the Astros human resources department. Unfortunately, I was beaten to the punch. Unlike most clarks, I am going to stay away from the standard unprovoked and unwarranted burn on Coach Jim. I'll embrace my clarkness, I guess. I've decided to post because I want to give some kudos to the staff here on a job well done with the new site. It looks really good and I look forward to all the new changes coming up. Anyway, fire at will. Go Astros.

If suggestions are in order, I'll put in a vote to ditch the Beer and Queso forum and just combine it back with the regular TZ. It makes sense, logically, but it just seems too odd to have those other topics relegated to what feels like a sub-tier board of their own. I don't know jack about beer or Freda's cats, but it just doesn't seem like the TZ without those sorts of topics liberally sprinkled through.

4th. I certainly understand the intent, but I prefer not to hop back and forth between the forums. I've always enjoyed the fairly high BS to baseball ratio on the TZ, personally.

This whole thing is very strange to me as an admin.  This was done as a reaction to member's request.  Is that too hard to understand people?  I'm not going against an agreed upon change by the admin group, so I suggest you drop it immediately or PM admins with your concerns.

thank you, I'm not upset, just don't understand why there is confusion about this move and why it is made a public reaction when you all know you can go to private means to PM any one of five admins to get the information you desire.

Yes, but I have to defend my fellow admins as being much more than five of us sitting around with nothing better to do than to muck up the site.  We do a lot to hear your voices, even the dissention expressed here.  But do it the right way is all I'm asking.  I'm actually violating my own desire to keep this from escalating by talking about it publically, but perhaps this will be a good thing to do right now and end it as the method we, the admins of the site, prefer if you have a burning desire to effect change here.

Sorry, Noe, and understood.

I blame Dayquill if I'm sounding a little on edge, which not my intention.  I just admire the people working hard as admins and when this decision was reached, it had it's give and take and when reached consensus, we exhausted everything.  In the end, we went with what we have and if it doesn't work out, we'll change it because I have a feeling we will hear about it privately over and over again about our mistake.  That to me is fair, but on the second day?  In public?

Come on, have respect for the admins at least to take this to a  private means of communicating second day reactions at minimum.

Just wanted to take a second to offer my long-winded opinion:

Started out yesterday so excited for the game.  I'm a Texas transplant originally from San Diego (so I may be aloof and a little laid back).  Set up my Time Warner DVR to record both channels it said the game was on (in San Antonio).  I spent way too much time at work looking at the new site and had to stay late to finish up.  I didn't sit down to watch the game until about 9:45.  To my dismay, the DVR decided not to record my Astros.  Can't tell you dissapointment in not being able to see the first few innings of the new-look team.  Luckily, I was able to watch the remainder of the game on another TV.

Fortunately, I had discovered there was a place online for honest Astros commentary without most of the "lesser" characteristics of other message boards  (IE, no FLIRT threads).  From the in-depth PBP from OregonStrosFan to the color commentary from other posters; pertinent news from Pravata, Duman and Jacksonian on the Minors--this board has a lot going for it.  The Admins have pulled off the transition seamlessly.  I appreciate all the hard work that goes into keeping this site functional.

I missed the first few innings, but was able to catch up thanks to the GameZone.

THANKS FOR BEING HERE!

I say smorgasbord!

To go ahead and purchase my acre in Alaska, I'll say IMO, and I'm not the member who came up with the suggestion BTW, that the beer threads were cool in the TZ.  A suggestion I would have would be in addition to the 'Friday beer thread' thing in the TZ, there could be a running beer thread, or glossary if you will, containing ratings and suggestions from SnS beer connoisseurs.  Then, maybe a run-down of the best places to eat queso/drink beer/watch game in the Houston/Austin/SA areas, again from SnS members' perspective.  This would be my ultimate version of the Beer and Queso forum/whatever.  Other NBB topics are really fine wherever, as long as they are clearly marked NBB or maybe even NBQ.  Then again, I am nobody afterall.

Seriously folks, can Andy and I be any *more* clearer than we have been about the new forum?  This has got to be the funniest and saddest thread in the history of the TZ because you guys are much more smarter than this to have to make me repeat over and over and over again the same damn thing for the same damn reason:

1. The new forum stays until we (the admins) say it does not.  Use it however you wish within the boundaries set loosely by our announcement.  (Spack will patrol all forums).
2. We (the admins) were not the ones who came up with the idea, look around you... there is more than a handful of folks who are members.
3. No one is going to stop you from having Friday Beer Threads in the TZ!  NOT ONE TIME WAS IT SAID THAT IS SHOULD CEASE IMMEDIATELY!!!!
4. Why is using private methods to communicate ideas about the forum not acceptable to some of you?

Don't make me wake up spack okay... he's been taking a long nap the last few days and no one wants the old buzzard to come in here with guns blazing to take care of some bidness that frankly I think he should.

Okay, are we done now explaining to you who are still unaware of what's going *IN PUBLIC WAYS*?  Because I sure am and I am trying really hard to not just nuke post and send some folks into two week vacations because of it.  End of this discussion in public, it saddens me that a good thing that is happening around here can be made a public display of admin hangman.  Do so in private all you want, that is certainly okay... I'm not saying it again either.

I'm probably adding to the exasperation because I don't believe anyone means any harm.  Seriously, I think everyone wants to help and I do appreciate it.  So my suggestion is this when it comes to the Beer and Queso forum:

1. Line up your concerns and send PMs immediately to: Waldo, Noe, HudsonHawk, Arky Vaughn and Andyzipp.

2. We will listen if enough of you feel it was a huge mistake, because again, we debated this and there was give and take about the move that centered around the same issues being touched upon here.

3. Realize when you speak, you speak of your own concern and perhaps, perhaps, perhaps there are more than a handful of folks who would like the new forum to stay and will make that forum as viable a vehicle even if you personally never intend to use or read B&Q.

4. Some folks stay right here in the TZ and that is so awesome that it is that way for you, but we're not TZ.com.... we're spikesnstars.com and we offer much more than just the TZ.  Those who love the TZ only, please, please, please keep on loving it and making it a great place.  But don't think we're denegrating your palace when we make these moves.  We're making moves that are viable for many people and the TZ will always be as good or great as you guys make it.  It's not the topics, the forum nor the structure.... it's you that makes the TZ what it is.  We never intend to censor *you* and handcuff you from having conversations about beer here if that is what you intend to do any way.  If you can't find your way towards walking out of the TZ to explore other places here, fine... we appreciate and honor that.  But you're not *all* the people.

Our motto from day one was this:

A fansite build by fans, run by fans for the fans.  I'd like to think we live by that motto to be as much as we can be for *all* fans as we can.

Some of you are having some fears right now that are unfounded and unnecessary so you need to speak to us in private so we can assure you we're not going nuts around here with changes and will hurt your place of choice.

I'm not saying it again either.

wow, was this warranted?
Often wrong, but never in doubt.

I no longer wish to discuss this in public.  Private PM is okay though.  thanks.

One last bit of public business for me: I owe outlawscotty an apology for using his input as my platform for directing the conversation where it should go.  I was wrong and freely admit it painted him in the wrong light.  For that, I am sorry an offer a very public "I really suck" admission to OS and hope he can accept my deepest regrets for having done this.

My bad, I won't even blame the dayquill any more, I was just plain wrong about highlighting OS, he is not to blame for my mistake.

Boy.  Wake up and come back here after a couple of days and...

Really.  I'm impressed.  I appreciate the time and the work and the planning and I think it's fantastic.  You guys did a great job!
I'm in love with rock and roll and I'll be out all night.
