Man, when I first read that article about Angel Hernandez umping a AAA game I was ecstatic.  Then I scrolled back up and saw the article was from 1991.  I imagine this is what it feels like when you think you won the lotto only to double check your ticket and realize you were 2 numbers off.

Do you think that there is any possibility that MLB hasn't gotten rid of Hernandez or CB Bucknor because they are minorities? I sure hope not. The players routinely complain about both of those guys being among the worst umpires in MLB, and I just don't understand why MLB hasn't addressed that yet. As MM so aptly pointed out, the Angel of Death apparently was a shitty, incorrigible umpire in the minor leagues. I never saw him work in the minors because I don't think that he was ever assigned to the PCL, but I've seen enough of his smug incompetence at the big league level to last a lifetime. I applaud Bob Melvin for showing enough restraint not to wring Hernandez's neck after the replay call. Getting tossed on that unjust call would have been the first thing that I would have done.

Those two might be among the worst but it seems to me that a majority of umpires are pretty boneheaded.

It may be a factor, but my guess is that the union is the real reason they're still working. We don't know if or how they may have been disciplined by the union or MLB, and I don't know what structure exists for that. If it's common knowledge among all of us how shitty and what toolbags they are, I'm sure that isn't lost on others who would be in a position to do something about it. That would lead me to conclude that there really is just so much that can be done, and not much more.

If I'm not mistaken the crew reviewing a play is in real time contact with someone from the league office.
