Can we have an actual sacrificial lamb as manager?  Surely there are some in College Station.
I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing AstroTurf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, torture of Bud Selig.

They are too valuable there for them to be sacrificed in that way.

FWIW, Riggleman passes the "someone like Art Howe" test. Whoever manages this team next season (and the one after that) has to be a manager that understands teaching and patience (not making lineups to try win today's game). It's a whole different gig in Houston right now.

I don't think Jim Riggleman passes the "I'm not a quitter" test.

You may be right about passing the "someone like Art Howe" test. It is indeed a different gig. It'll be interesting to see who Luhnow picks snookers into the job.

He quit because he felt he was getting screwed over. I thought of it more like a preemptive, " you can't fire me, I quit."

I wasn't there so I don't know.

Wasn't it over a denial of extension of a contract? That's my recollection.

Yup. Then, supposedly, the GM acted shocked that he quit. Ahum, if you're going to play a bluff, don't be surprised when they lay down their cards and walk away.

Who was the last former Cub manager that we hired? Had to be the Lip, who I loved for his fire. But he didn't last too long due to illness, which brought on the Preston Gomez suck years.

I'm not so sure. If he told the club that he was quitting if they didn't extend him, and then they didn't extend him, and then he *didn't* quit, wouldn't that be more spineless?

It was in the middle of the season. He whined about not getting a meeting with the GM, then told the GM that he'd quit if he didn't get a meeting, then he quit and whined about it to the press. If you don't like the job and you want to quit, fine, but don't try to play the victim card. People don't quit those jobs, they retire or they get fired. It's a great job, it's one you want and you ride it as long as you can. If you put yourself in front of the success of the team because you feel like you didn't get respect, well, tough shit. Take it like a man, don't whine about how hurt you feel in the papers.

He quit. Damn few people do, and most of them are burned out or can't handle the pressure and they don't come back. He quit because he didn't feel respected, but he wants back in. That shows me too much ego and it puts him in a very, very small class of guys.

Some interesting comments in here re: Riggleman's relationship with the players and how he instructed his hitters to defensively hit the other way:

Saw Riggleman last night managing the Pensacola Blue Wahoos (AA - Reds).  Their SS, Billy Hamilton, is unbelievable.  Just broke professional baseball record for most steals in a season (set by Vince Coleman).  Stole four bags last night.
