USA v MEX
« on: August 12, 2009, 09:23:30 am »
Beer and Queso indeed.  This is one tasty matchup with our neighbors to the South.  USA is arrriving in Mexico City just 22 hrs ahead of kick off, at the advice of the US Olympic Committee to deal with the altitude.  Team Mexico has moved the game up to 3pm to make it extra smoggy spicey.  The US has never won at Azteca Stadium, but with the recent string of good play against world champions Spain, and to a lesser extent vs mighty Brasil, this might be our day.

ETA:  Spain are actually EURO champs, but still ranked numero uno when we beat them.

And the most important question... how do I watch this on the net?
I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing AstroTurf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, torture of Bud Selig.

Not that I care about soccer especially, but my husband is getting into it, and has several Mexican friends he plays with... what time is the game?

The USA side played those last ten minutes very badly.  They stopped attacking and allowed the Mexican side to take the game to them.  That sort of tentative play led to the tying goal by the Tri-Color.  Hopefully the USA side can recapture an attack of some sort to take the momentum away.  (As I typed, the USA side is now attacking.  Man, what a wasted opportunity to take a game away from Mexico).

The problem with the defend/counterattack strategy is that it easily turns into this.

I had a feeling it was way too early for that strategy.  Mexico attacks well, so you need to put them back on their heels because they push up too much.  The best strategy against Mexico is to attack them... constantly.

ESPN claims that Davies cramped up and that the MExico players were trying to help him up.  I find that laughable.

It wasn't much, but he has no business trying to put his hands on Davies.  He should know better, let the ref deal with a player who is laying on the ground, keep your hands to yourself.

"trying to help him up" is what they could claim, but they were aggressively tugging on him to "get up!".  Keep your hands off players, you're not the ref, the ball is already on the corner and if Davies is faking, then it's up to the ref to pull out the yellow card.

They have no business touching the player down and since they aggressively yanked on him, the hand slipped off his shoulders on onto his neck area and that pissed off Davies.  And caused the USA players to bull rush the Mexicans to get off him.
