are you kidding?  the cubs continued practice of scheduling regular day games is one of the few interesting things about them.  plus, it was the source of maybe the greatest recent FTC meltdown (dusty baker's 'effect of heat on dark skin' rant)

T1

-Randy Wells facing Bourn.  JD says he's been on a hot streak, and he starts out with some good offspeed stuff.  He seems to work pretty fast also.  Bourn gets a good swing on a 2-2 fastball, but flies out to left

-Good curve starts out Kep, high inside fastball, change grounded out 6-3

-90 mph fastball on the outside corner for strike one, breaking ball taken for ball 2, surprises tejada with a fastball that he swings late on, changeup fouled off, splitter inside then another spliiter grounded out 4-3

0-0 to the bottom of the 1st, Wells has a good approach-- works quickly between pitches and not afraid to throw strikes

Hampton 6-7 on the year with a 4.7 ERA, passable for a 4th starter I'd say

-Johnson gets behind 0-2 after swinging over a great slider, Johnson fouls off a couple, fastball outside, opposite field single on a low and away fastball

-Theriot with the stupid soul patch up, doubles a cutter? down the line

2nd and 3rd no outs

No shit.  PENCE?!?! still has no clue how to keep his throws feasibly cut off.

-Milton Bradley up.  BB mentioning how many walks he's been taking in July, Hampton gets behind 3-1 as BB notes all the problems he's had in the first inning this year (20 runs in 18 starts), walks Bradley on a straight fb wayyy outside

1st and 2nd 1 out for Soriano

Hampton has now allowed 23 runs in the first inning of 18 starts.

I don't care if he gives up 20 today.  He has to stay in.

Jimmy Dugan (because Cooper won't say anything): Evelyn Hunter, could you come here for a second? Which team do you play for?
Evelyn Gardner Hunter Pence: Well, I'm a Peach Astro.
Jimmy Dugan: Well I was just wonderin' why you would throw home when we got a two-run lead. You let the tying run get on second base and we lost the lead because of you. Start using your head. That's the lump that's three feet above your ass.

That's approximately 1,000,000 walks in 2+ games.  We're giving these games away.

-Koye Hill up, attacks him then goes up 0-2 on good slider, wild pitch on slider in the dirt, outside cutter fouled off, smash up the middle for another RBI

Neither a borrower nor a lender be.  Other teams are bad enough that we could hang around, but you can't patch all the holes on this team without irresponsibly mortgaging the future.

-Randy Wells bunts, thankfully getting us an out away from the end of the inning.  Sac Fly and Sac bunt the only outs we've gotten.

"It's Wrigley Field, anything can happen" says JD.

Johnson bounces foul, Hampton with outside cutter, then manages to get it right perfect on the outside corner, Johnson forced to protect when he throws curve and flies out to Bourn (who had to do some serious shading with his glove in order to catch it)

0-6 to the T2, Lee, Blum, and PENCE!!! up

I hope Cooper realizes that he's gotta keep him in.

Judging from the body language of his mound visit, I'd say Dewey had a message for Hampton along the lines of "you suck today, but you're just gonna have to tough this one out and take one for the team."

JD just did a "Let's reconstruct the inning..." and basically called out Hunter Pence for the unraveling of the inning for failure to throw to third or at minimum hit the cutoff man.  JD made a case for the possibility of a DP but I did not follow his logic, Theriot was at second, not first.  However, while I do think Pence was absolutely wrong for missing the cut-off man... Hampton just looks horrible today.

You're number #3 starter folks... and if Roy is hurt, your #2 starter folks.  Heaven help the Astros!

Cliff Lee just got traded to Philadelphia.  Heaven might get us Halladay instead.

Halladay was never a serious consideration for a trade (as from my understanding).  Toronto wanted to gauge interest and were surprised how they were lowballed (in their own mind) by everyone that was interested.  No one is paying this year, by and large, in any type of dollar and prospect high cost.

Today, maybe... it's still really early.  The season?  Definitely, the wild card and NL Central is lead by teams that have some flaws.  The problem is that as much as Houston tries, health and well... sub-par and inconsistent performances... is hard to overcome.  You can beat other teams a lot easier when you're not beating yourself.

Cecil Cooper is learning.  He of the "I'd never do that to a pitcher.  Never!" (when asked if it were a good idea to allow a pitcher to take his lumps for the good of saving the pen, circa: right after Cooper did a conga dance of relievers in Washington).

-Kaz up, BB with a horrible anecdote about Wells being mentored in the minors by a relative of some Brewer announcer, Kaz reaches down and hits a good low FB into center for a single

-Hampty hangs in but bounces out to third, runner at second erased

-Bourn up, broken bat chopper (broke the handle of the bat!) to pitcher, should have been easy double play but theriot bobbled the throw to first and bourn is safe without a throw

-Kep bouncer to pitcher

DoRay discussing Candace Parker, "WNBA dunking star".

I fully support women's professional leagues.  I want role models for my daughter.

But that video clip of the WNBA all-star game with everyone standing out of the way for Parker to dunk - TWICE - was downright embarrassing.

-Soriano up, BB claims Soriano claims he was pointing to his family the other night rather than the astros bench, JD suggesting we should cut him slack.  Soriano strikes out on a HORRIBLE at-bat-- he seemingly had the approach that he would only swing at the home run pitch (belt high fastball on outside part of plate) and nothing else

-Baker popos up to second

Feel free to switch over the Cubs feed and listen to the announcers talk about how important it is you want to win in baseball, and you can't sweep if you lose a game in the series.

Fokudome in the game at center for some rason

-Tejada groundball single to left

JD oddly optimistic today, already setting the stage for the rally

-Lee hits one hard to right, but directly to bradley

-Blum up, excuse me golf swing on low pitch, taps to secondbaseman but no chance of double play

-PENCE!!! up.  two outs, so fortunately he likely won't have too much strategy to think about, Wells fucks around a little bit trying to nibble and get pence to bite on the inside corner, of course just as i start to give pence a minimum of credit for laying off, he swings at the same shit pitch 3-1 and flares a foulout to the first baseman

0-7

Personally, I'd rather not have Norris come into this game.

Agreed.
I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing AstroTurf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, torture of Bud Selig.

Agreed.

If doesn't throw so much that he's not good for Sunday, I say let him pitch.  A blowout seems to be a good low pressure situation to get the kid his first mlb taste.

Kid throws nice and easy.  Blue was figuring out his ability to locate on the black, so that K was about the Blue catching up to Norris' game.  Nicely done.

Blue is basically telling the kid that he needs to clean up the location a bit.  But overall, the Kid is pitching to his strengths.  Low heater, on the corners.  Don't stray from that and he'll be fine.

MLB Gameday says Norris is getting squeezed.

He's hitting the glove wherever Pudge sets up.  That's not getting squeezed, that's doing what his batterymate is asking him to do.  It's up to Pudge to work the Blue (ask him "was I too far outside?  Isn't this a good pitch?  Come on, make them swing the bat Blue...").  But Norris is doing eggszactly what he should do.  Don't beg, don't whine, do your job... let Pudge do his.

So far, so good.

That K was totally on Pudge.  Norris just did his job and trusted his catcher to get him that corner... and he did.  That's how you work in the majors.  Overall, he was pinpoint accurate on location, nice smooth delivery, easy heat.  Now it's about building on that.

If he hit the glove on the eggszact same pitch (as he did), the Blue will give it to him.  They don't give you anything until you prove you can hit that location consistently.  It's how it works for everyone, unfortunately or fortunately, in the majors.

Yep.  The Cubs weren't killing the Astros because of their offensive prowess.  They were killing the Astros because Mike Hampton has nothing today (or at all) and Hunter Pence's cranium is intimate with his anal cavity.

On the second attempt, Hunter made sure he was going to hit the cut-off man, but he bounced it that Blum just could not handle the throw.  DLee would have been dead meat had hunter done his job and thrown to the bill of Blum's cap (or shoulders) to allow for a cutoff or let it go home play.  Hunter needs to work on that.

BTW - this Randy Wells kid... looks pretty darn good.  He's pitching and not just throwing.  Really good approach to managing a game by this kid.  Hitting corners inside and outside, changing speeds, not overthrowing.  Looks like a very nice young pitcher for the sCrUBs.

Even against the Pyroots, Hampton looked horrible.  I remember wondering out loud how the heck Hampton was managing to beat that team... and then realized that it was Pittsburgh and the white flag was already raised and I had my answer.

Houston needs a #3 starter, else you can think they're going to make a run in late August/early September, but you'd be fooling yourself.  Seriously fooling yourself.

What are worthless Hampton's stats against any team other than the Piroots?

Total: 99 IP, 6-8, 5.36
vs. PIT: 27 IP, 4-0, 1.00
vs. everyone else: 72 IP, 2-8, 7.00

52 pitches today.  3 days rest until Sunday.  Is that enough time?

Was today a regular start for him?  Typically a bullpen session is about 30-40 pitches to stretch the arm out.  That is not unusual for pitching about two to three days later.  BTW - some starters go about 20 or so pitches in the bullpen and really cut loose, so there is that.

10,000 infielders on the squad, and we move Carlos to 1b.

Got to see if they can make room for Jason Michaels to play everyday while Lance is out.

I guess?

Even against the Pyroots, Hampton looked horrible.  I remember wondering out loud how the heck Hampton was managing to beat that team... and then realized that it was Pittsburgh and the white flag was already raised and I had my answer.

Houston needs a #3 starter, else you can think they're going to make a run in late August/early September, but you'd be fooling yourself.  Seriously fooling yourself.

Jon Garland or Doug Davis, come on down.   In fact, let's kill two birds with one stone and get one of them and Qualls to fill the bullpen hole left by Hawkins injury.

NEWSFLASH (dos): Doug Brocail topping off at 85ish on his fastball (w/command), 90ish if he's just raring back and throwing (w/o command).  Trying to get away primarily with spinning breaking pitches.  Does not look good at all.

Brocail is not going to help much down the stretch unless he finds his release point and power from his legs to throw much harder and crisper.

God bless Brocail for being a gamer and trying hard, but he's a 42 yeard old man trying to come back from a significant leg injury.  There's just no way this ends well.

I love his leadership, but the Astros need a hard thrower for the bullpen that can bridge to Valverde (who seems to rely more and more on trickery to get the job done than just overpowering the opponents with his stuff).  I did not think Brocail was going to be an answer, that would have been asking too much.  I also suspected Hawkins was inconsistent and his pitches were just not crisp at all (not from what I witnessed from him before).  Hawkins as it turned out was dealing with shingles, nothing minor, plus back problems.

Houston needs a better pen at the back end for sure if they're serious about making a run.  This makeup won't do, unless you want to walk through this with a wish and prayer that it somehow works out.  You (as in Ed Wade) has two days to make up his mind on this one.

Yep. Footer got pissed off at me on twitter when I referred to Pence as a "prick" who was simply going to rollover into a double play, which he promptly did. I apologized for the prick part only. He needs to sit down for a few days when Erstad gets off of the DL, IMO.
