Only defensive limitations. How about limiting batter time outs per game?

Yeah Buck started getting ass-y about McCann's trips out there and I just wanted to smack him across the mouth. He had no idea what McCann was doing out there and he was being a jackass about it.
It was nothing but creeping dread all day... then the game started and I was terrified. It only got worse when they went up 5 - 0... WHAT IF THEY BLOW IT?
And now I never have to think that way ever again.
I can't wait for Sparks.
The comment in the Dallas News today about Hauschild included "Houston must have deep pitching to not protect this guy". The article said he didn't throw a straight pitch, that his ball had great movement to both sides of the plate.
Luhnow's said repeatedly that it takes 8-9 starters to get through a season. You list 12 players, but are all of them really options? Feliz (for the most part) and Devo excelled in the pen; at least one should have a prominent role in the pen. The others below him are pretty much wild cards, at this point. I'm not a Fiers apologist, by any means, but I think he will serve a purpose this season. $3.45M isn't enough of a reason to jettison him, just because.
It always seemed like money wasn't an issue unless they were adding more somewhere else (namely, bringing in another starter). With the odds appearing low at this point that we will add anything other than depth, I don't see why we would need "salary space".
Encarnacion and Bautista are feeling the QO sting pretty hard.
Mark Berman apparently quoting Keuchel on Astroline.
Anyone listen in and can provide further clarification on the "fluke accident" and what exactly was "fixed"?
Loses credibility when Miguelangelo Sierra is listed at #20 (C+) and then later, after a large group of "interchangeable" C+ guys, is grouped with a bunch of "other" prospects at C.
could turn into Anthony Rizzo if he makes adjustments, Jon Singleton if he doesn’t
Am I insane for thinking that's not an outrageous price?
Rangers take RHP Michael Hauschild from the Astros

Nationals close to a deal for Adam Eaton. I would assume this would weaken the chances of the Nats being in on Quintana (given the the Sox would likely have grabbed some of the players they like from the Nats farm). The Astros and Nats were the only teams named in the Quintana sweepstakes
Lots of chatter this morning that the Astros and White Sox are now discussing Quintana.

I'd guess Martes, Reed, Teoscar would get it done. Maybe Fisher instead of Teoscar. I am a homer though....
Shouldn't cost quite that much.
Done and team signing FO offered arb won't have to give up a first rounder.
With teams reluctant to surrender a first-round pick to sign free agent outfielder/designated hitter Jose Bautista, it’s possible the 36-year-old will sign with a club that has a protected selection, contends Rosenthal.
Takes the last spot on the 40-man from what I can tell.
Jeff Passan @JeffPassan 3 hours ago
This Edwin Encarnacion crap is starting to remind me of Jon Lester two years ago. He's in the D.R. If reports sound dumb, they probably are.
Not to go all Todd here, but PIT is said to be moving McCutcheon.
What about trading for him, then centering a Sale deal around Springer instead of Bregman?
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
yes but would depend on how long you get to keep Sale. For a year, no.
I know I'm in the minority, but I'm not big on trading away any major pieces like Bregman or Martes just yet. I believe our window is still wide open. The core group of this team won't begin to get broken up till the 2020 season (Altuve). I guess my point is we still have time on our side, no?
Bowden says Astros one of four teams in on Rich Hill. Yankees, Dodgers and Rangers allegedly the others.
I assumed he just meant if we wanted to make a play for a Sale type.
Astros were heavily in the mix for Cespedes, who ultimately signed with the Mets. Crasnick has the Astros as a "potential option" for Encarnacion.
Chris Davis gets on base better than Carter, despite the K's. And the perception is that Carter's a liability anywhere in the field; the Brewers probably see him as a DH. Good thing they're an AL team...
Chris Carter gets non-tendered for 2nd straight season, says Bob Nightengale. Provided great value for the Brewers at just $2.5MM this past season but was projected to get $8-10MM in arbitration for 2017.
I think McCullers is a legit #1 guy. I'd put 2015 Keuchel up against almost anyone. Sale is better than both, but not so much better that I would use those three guys as a starting point, imo.
If the Astros get Encarnacion to DH (leaving Gouriel at first), I would think that the Astros could put together a package of Reed, Martes, Fisher (and a couple of good but lower level prospects), to get Sale. I would not want to include K. Tucker or Paulino in that deal.
This could open up the possibility in including Fiers or McHugh in trade for a frontline starter. I like the signing. Can never have too much pitching.
No kidding. He's nearing 100 IP and his ERA for his non-starts (36 of his 41 appearances) is in the 1.60 range. He's been consistently very good. More importantly and non-stat based, he's either come in and stopped the bleeding when starters have faltered or held the line in close games again and again.
I don't know what I am more excited about; it's been great to see his slider really develop over the last couple of months but his changeup is just out of this world. Looks just like the fastball until it flutters and dies right in front of the plate.
Also, Giles is not a guy that should be closing for a contending team.
Interesting tweet:
No idea if 9 is a lot. I could only come up with 8:
Correa, Kemp, Teo, White, McCullers, Devenski, Velasquez, Minaya
Almost certain to add to that list are:
Hader, Phillips, and Ruiz.
And then there is Appel.
Other possibilities are Kemmer and Hauschild
In comparison, I only spotted 4 from 2009. 5 if you count Johnson's rehab stint.
5 in 2010
Only see 4 in 2011, and 4 in 2012...and 8 in 2013
In 2014 I predicted we'd have at least 10 MLB players from our @JetHawks team. We're at 9 right now. I'm trusting your source @brianmctaggart
And that's why we always tell youngsters to start running when you hit it, no matter where it goes, until the umpire calls it foul.
As for shortstops AE had as good an arm, range, and sense of positioning as one the Astros have ever had.
I know it was a bad pitch. He threw a 2-0 fastball in to try to get to 2-1 and sliders. He no doubt expected that particular hitter to be taking a strike, and he wasn't. You know baseball as well as I do.
Gomez is batting eighth tonight and playing LF.
Astros win!!!!
McHugh is being paid $500k this year, with his first shot at arbitration after next season. For the price, that's a damn good 3-4 starter.
He's the manager, but I do not see how he takes Bregman off of 3B. he has been outstanding. maybe OF puts too much strain on a hamstring?Gurriel played just one game in left in the minors and got 0 chances. Except for 2005, every game he played in the Cuban and Japan leagues were all in the infield. I'm not sure if left will be an option this year for Gurriel
I am really delighted with Hernandez so far. His fielding will come around, not sure about his arm. I like that A.J. Reed is picking up a lot of bases on balls, he's not chasing pitches out of the zone. Musgrove had a bad outing but otherwise has been stellar. And Bregman is now meeting the highest of expectations. I like these rookies.
Bregman is 3-4. Definitely fire the hitting coach.

I never heard the Astros linked to Lucroy except as speculation. I'm not sure what to believe.
“It’s hard to go from a veteran leader like Feldman to kids who have never been up here,’’ veteran reliever Pat Neshek said, “and find ways to get the team cohesive. We went from two rookies to nine rookies in a couple of weeks. It makes it tough.’’
I had heard him on the Astros podcast (replay of the pregame show) say that Bregman was the one name everyone wanted and they weren't willing to give him up.
Any optimism for September?
Reed and White are locked into a battle to see who can get sent down first.
He has really been terrible this season.
Only 6 of these 10 were in the majors in the middle of June.

Unless he's injured what would be the point?
I see Brady Rodgers somewhere waving his hand.

Jake Marisnick tweaked his right groin in the first game yesterday. More of a day to day thing.

LOL I completely misread it. Still he's 1 for his last 12. Just a day off?
He's played in every game since Aug 3 including both games yesterday. May just be a day off.
Teo has been called up for tonight's game.

A couple nights ago our boys where down and out again, down 5-0 to Minnesota. Then the rains came...and after yesterday, a inevitable loss reversed with another win in the 2nd half of the DH tacked on. I know everyone's kind of writing the season off, but what are everyone's thoughts on the team going on a run from the rainout going forward? I really thinks there's alot to be positive about. With Gomez gone, Marisnick is now going to play the part of Adam Everett, just in the OF (a b-e-a-Utiful thing). Bregman has to come around on some level right? Gurriel is coming to help soon as well. Valbuena is on the mend and should be a shot in the arm at some point. The bullpen is coming together with Giles finally earning the role of Closer and Hoyt adding some depth. If we can get Gregorson back soon the pen should be solid. Now, the only problem, the rotation. Is McCullers going to come back and be McCullers this year? If so, then the addition of Musgrove really gives this team 6 solid options in the rotation the rest of the way. I don't know...I'm kind of liking our chances to go on a run and finish strong this year. Am I nuts?
Springer in center for tonights game, I like that.
You must have been great when you played.
Will this game be the day he finally gets hit number 5
What more can you say 'bout this Altuve fellow?
And then there's that Gurriel guy..
Uh, are we forgetting pitchers?
Singleton is starting to heat up right now. Might rather see him for the week or 2 before Valbuena/Gurriel. He's on the 40 man, could not do any worse
AJ Reed quickly becoming the next man out when Valbuena or Gurriel is ready. 0 for 10 with a walk and 5 Ks. After raking for 436 in his 11 game AAA stint.
Yes, this game was imminently winnable. Harrel put it on a platter for an early putdown.
Great win. Does an RBI-single in 4 ABs keep White on the roster. Find out tomorrow
Teoscar overhauled his approach at least starting last year.
Looks like Correa got rid of the beard after the game today, hope that helps this offense.
Why isn't Rasmus on the DL??? He has some ear infection thing. Send him down, he is absolutely useless right now. Give him a week off, then some at bats at AAA to see if he can get going again.
I have a hard time accepting that Luhnow's conceding this season. If you're close in August, especially the beginning of August, you have to go all in. You can daydream all you want about your window but the cold reality is that you may not have a window beyond the one you're looking through right now.
I couldn't help but notice that the owner was there tonight. I imagine he wanted to see for himself what the fuck is going on. Maybe now he knows.
This isn't just some fluke slump. With all the injuries we're getting a preview of next year's offense.
Rasmus will be gone. Valbuena may be gone. Bregman and Reed are not ready and may not be ready next spring. The free agent class is weak (which will drive Valbuena's price up).
They're just a few bad breaks from starting next season with only four legitimate starting position players on their whole roster (Altuve, Castro, Correa and Springer).
They really need to reassess how they're drafting and developing hitters... and how they're coaching hitting at both the minor and major league levels.
This just isn't working. At least they've got the pitching part down...
What are the motivations of the Democrats you've met that support Trump?
Source: Astros set to call up RHP Brad Peacock, who's in Houston. Not sure of corresponding move.
I saw that too and laughed. Rabbit ears Bob.
And a lot of those ABs have gone to a rookie that has one hit and no power production. And the pen hasn't been reliable at the end of the game.
They have reverted to being a sorry road team. They are playing better teams.
Tomorrow is a new day!
It's not all that bad either; it's not like those are talent-less arms.
Hernandez could probably do better than any of them, but what do I know?
Hoyt!!!!!!!
No person deserves this call up more than James Hoyt. I can't wait for him to hear @astros fans cheer as he enters the game.
RP James Hoyt is coming up tomorrow for @astros. So that's another addition. It happened. Somewhere Ensberg is crying
Reed called back up to the show according to Berman.

Maybe the major leagues are harder than AAA.
The ridiculous plate approach of swing out of your shoes at anything, in any count, has nothing to with Hudgens. He's carrying out his assignment exactly as directed by Ground Control.
Wait, really? Fire the major league hitting coaches because they players they've worked with the *least* don't hit immediately during their first weeks facing MLB pitching?
Who would trade for Rasmus? But your point on Fister is valid.
The Feldman deal is a real head-scratcher. I can understand it as a moving part of a second trade, and I hope that's what it is and the second deal just didn't go through. But on its own, subtracting known production from the big club feels like they're giving up on the season.

Source: #Astros working on deals big and small. Number of possibilities in play.
Will Smith to Giants
Gurriel gets a GB single (off TCU-ex Preston Guillory) in a 1-4 day.
17-year old Gilberto Celestino goes 0-3 in stateside debut.
#Astros are also dabbling in starter market, but it's largely picked over. Edinson Volquez a possibility, but they're lukewarm on him.
3 moves:
3 way between the Indians, Brewers and Astros:
Trade Castro to the Indians for one of the guys the Brewers wanted.
Tack on Paulino, Feliz and Daz Cameron and get Lucroy and Will Smith.
Second
Flip Gomez, Fisher and Moran for Beltran.
Third
Martes and Fiers (likely need to add 1 or 2 lower level prospects as well) for Odorizzi
Or do nothing at all, because I just don't feel one move is going to be enough
White the only guy on the left side with Bregman in left. Better get the K Harris
Bruce is under contract through 17. There is no extension needed, he makes 13 Million in 2017. There is a TEAM option to buy him out for 1 million, otherwise Bruce is locked up for 2017 too.
Seems like there have been opinions on upgrading the outfield (or at least the offensive production from outfielders) in a number of recent threads. I was looking at July performance recently and noticed this slash line:
.325/.341/.425
Anyone care to guess which outfielder that belongs to?
Yes I agree. But I feel like this one and the next we can and should take because come August the opponents get a little tougher. So we don't want to be in that position.
Shut up.
Last night stings. Need to take the next two.
The Cubs are reportedly sending their top prospect (Torres) plus others to the Yankees for 2+ months of Chapman. Makes the trade for 5 years of Giles look like a steal for Houston.
Not necessarily "learning" it. I assume he just needed to demonstrate that he can already play LF well enough that he can be trusted there occasionally this season.
Playing LF.That seems odd. 2 extra games in left was enough to learn a new position?
Let's keep our eye on the Fresno game to see if Bregman is scratched. They could have a clubhouse incident too.
Report is he was scratched due to illness (cold/flu) but it certaintly seems fishy.
That is where I am at. If this was Altuve's last year and near the end of Correa/Springer's contract and we wanted 1 more push for a WS, sure. But I don't want to gut the farm right now. Astros seem to be in a good position to content for the next 5 years, I don't want to gamble that on 1 player.
chisox said to seek 5 top prospects for sale. rivals do not blame them & 1 said "they will get it!"
That is what the DMN reported....not a typo. BTW, I bet Sale is not dealt.
Bregman, Reed and Martes was thrown out there on twitter. No thanks.
He was saving it for the right moment.
That was a lot more stressful than it needed to be.
The dream shared by some here that Gomez will be DFA'd needs to die. It's never going to happen.
No doubt Tucker will see at least half of his ABs out of the DH role. But I was thinking more of Bregman replacing Gomez on the roster as the other shoe.
I assume he will be just be a DH and they feel he helps them more than Reed in that role. Hope it's a move of consequence.
Tucker says he's been called up.
Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
McTag tweet says it's not related to Bregman.
Dammit, meant the younger Tucker.
Chris Archer for Preston Tucker, Fiers, & AJ Reed.
Considering what the Astros had to give up for Gomez, someone like Derek Fisher and a lower level prospect.
Would be interesting to see what the Astros would do with the roster if the added Beltran. I'd guess Jake would get sent down.
Anyone else having deja vu?
From your keyboard to Luhnow's ears.
Also, per Tags:
Bregman may get a start in LF today
This guy played 133 games last year and didn't hit much better. So the rusty factor and playing time don't really matter there. Anyway we're going to have to agree to disagree. Let's get a win today and it will all be alright.
This team looks like it's a heartbeat away from starting to lose games in bunches...
Trade bait? Luhnow really likes him though. I think he could improve the rotation now but it seems Rodgers is ahead of him in the line of ascendancy.
It looked to me like it was more or less over when Carlos decided to insert himself into things.
Rodgers would be the guy called up if they wanted a starter. Hoyt if they wanted to move Feldman back to the rotation (or Devinski).
Inning fizzles with a 5-4-3 DP hit into by Marwin. Where is everybody? It's not football season yet.
I don't have the numbers, but that sounds like every dollar available short of a draft pick penalty
Babip may be the best stat to look at here.
McCullars .395
Giles . 355
McHugh .348
Keuchel .318
Friers .306
League Average .303
Feliz . 291
Devo .289
Feldman .283
Harris .283
Fister .255
Gregerson .250
Neshek .186
So most of our starters have been on the unlucky end for the first half of the year. Our bullpen on the other hand looks lucky.
A.J. Hinch says Alex Bregman will NOT join the team in Seattle this weekend. He adds that Bregman could help team down the stretch.
That may be the smallest of small sample sizes I've ever seen used in an argument. (or is this abuse, I get confused?)
I also wouldn't mind seeing Fiers or even McHugh replaced by someone more effective. Maybe Musgrove could be ready by August - of course that's a risk.
Is 3 of every 5 games adequate for Reed? Cause that is easily doable with Bregman up.
4/5 days Bregman plays 3rd, 1/5 Valbuena plays. 1st, 2/5 Valbuena 1/5 Marwin, 2/5 Reed. 4/5 LF Rasmus, 1/5 Marwin. Catcher 3/5 Castro, 2/5 Gattis. DH, 2/5 Gattis, 2/5 Reed, 1/5 Valbuena.
Bregman, 4/5. Valbuena, 4/5, Gattis, 4/5, Reed 3/5, Marwin 2/5.
that would make more sense because Bregman plays the positions that Worth does.
What does being 29 have to do with anything? Sipp is more effective against RHers than LHers this year. So that negates the "only southpaw in the bullpen" argument.
When a 5th starter you are as good as your last start.
no way Jose. seems it would give and advantage to one team
here we go again with "hitting enough" for a defensive position. I will not get sucked in again.
61 Yankees did just fine with Boyer at 3rd (.224) because the CFer hit pretty well. it does not matter where the offense comes from!
I have grave doubts about Moran hitting enough for a 1b.
Like it could be showcasing him for a deal? Who knows. I suspect Luhnow is and will consider all alternatives. I just hope they don't deal him. I really believe he will be a star player.
there is a more blatant need for a #1 or #2 quality SP.
I don't know why they don't promote him.
Gotta give HH creidt in that thread for getting Correa going too.
Most of us, we are a pretty optimistic bunch.
And both Bregman and Teoscar Hernandez hitting homers today for Fresno
My concern is, so is Will Harris.
I thought that was a Yogi line?Similar:
So, 0 R, 1 BB and 18 K in his first 9 innings in the U.S.? Not bad.
Prospects has always been this management group's currency. Not sure I see that changing.
On MLB Tonight the number they threw out was 4/48.
Rosenthal puts on his spekalatin' hat:
"Perhaps the Astros could sign Gurriel, use him at third base and designated hitter later in the summer, then move him to left next season. Another possibility -- with both left fielder Colby Rasmus and center fielder Carlos Gomez potential free agents -- would be to move Bregman to the outfield next season, even though the Astros drafted him as a shortstop with the second pick in the 2015 draft."
Dude, third game.
You are underestimating the reaction by Europe to being told to go fuck itself.
Also, with rumblings in other countries of similar efforts (Froghop?), the EU may well decide to nail the UK in its negotiations in order to send a message.
The jobs left behind in a small, isolated economy will not be those that are enjoyed today. The economy will shrink, prospects will shrink, opportunities will disappear.
The numbers do not include the number of Brits retired abroad or owning properties abroad, which I suspect is a big number, who all now have to re-evaluate their circumstances
To Pots,
As Chuck points out, Greece is clearly the wrong example.
Also, why view this as some negotiation, or bargain between the EU and the UK. Seems a more logical view is whether UK citizens were better off before the vote, or after.
As to Trump, he is such a dumbass to tout this up as something positive. Donald smearing the turd all over his face, and then he gloats?
If I were a 20 year old Brit I would be losing my shit right about now. A bunch of toothless, 70 year old Whippet lickers from post-industrial shitholes about as cheerful as a Morrissey song have just slammed the door in my face on countless future opportunities, employment and otherwise.
I have to imagine that once everyone sobers up they'll find a way simply to avoid invoking Article 50.
Unbundling the UK form Europe is such an enormous and unfathomable task, that there's no way to get it done in two years without massive trauma to the UK. All the Brits living and working abroad have to apply for work permits - with little incentive for their European host to allow them - having just been told to go fuck themselves. All Europeans living and working in the UK have to do likewise; but they will likely get an easier ride - except from the UKIP camp who are now moving on to Phase 2 of purifying the English race.
I'm a Kemmer fan, so I am biased, but I don't see them demoting him. He's slowly improved his BA over the year and imagine the power will follow.
That's one crowded infield.

Brady Aiken was successful in his debut, albeit at a very low level. He walked his first batter who was later picked off by Mr. Aiken. He struck out the side in the second. Line- 2IP, 0H, 1BB, 3SO.
McTag tweet says Worth will be recalled today. My guess is White gets demoted. 40-man roster move, no clue.
I wonder if Rogers has moved ahead of Musgrove in the first callup to go into the rotation if they need/desire one.
Fantastic at bat by Gomez....
It's not like either of them were expected to be much of anything. A soft-tossing lefty without a single remarkable pitch and fair metal bat hitter with mediocre defensive skills.
The only thing that surprises me about the Astros taking Rogers is the questionable bat. I would have thought they'd look for a mediocre defender who can hit a bit, sort of the opposite of Rogers.
They did go with a lefty. Wild lefty. Adcock, Brett
Adcock can touch 94 mph on the radar gun, and he gets good rotation on his curveball, although he doesn't always locate well and can be inconsistent. The left-hander started 14 games for Michigan this year and had a 3.22 ERA, plus 100 strikeouts in 78 1/3 innings.
Matt Krook wouldn't surprise me at 3 either.
Alright. If he's there at 4 I'm calling Krook.
Alright. If he's there at 4 I'm calling Krook.
I think round 3 is where the Astros go for catcher if one of Johnson, Murphy or Rogers is there.
I think round 3 is where the Astros go for catcher if one of Johnson, Murphy or Rogers is there.
And Forrest Whitley it is.
Isn't going to happen before the end of this season. They couldn't get a glass of spit for him.
I like him better in the pen. I can't see how he would lose a spot there. Next year I think they lose Gregerson, Neshek, and Feldman. If Feliz goes to the rotation that's 4 holes in the bullpen to fill.
That's some crazy shit. And are we going to have a Bregman appearance soon?
I'd like to see a concerted effort to place a ball in Dipshit Odor's earhole. I'm sick of getting beat by that little prick.
I'm pretty sure he uses the same delivery and arm swing (what he reportedly modified) for all pitches. I think he/they changed his arm swing (on all pitches) in an effort to help his shoulder.
The Astros were unknowingly granted a gift when JD resigned with the Astros under a minor league contract. This statement is false. He did not "resign." Not sure if after clearing waivers JD had the option to bolt. He was outrighted to OKC, after successfully clearing waivers. But I believe the outright carried his major league salary, making him one of the highest paid AAA players.
"Jeff was telling [me] there's a lot of teams that were looking around," he said. "I was supposed to make a lot of money in Triple-A, and because of that it's kind of spooked teams away. Now it will be a lot easier to get picked up."
I was really concerned after the first inning, but good god, he pitched a great game afterwards. What a curve.
JD's spot was utilized by the future Twin Hall of Famer Robbie Grossman and he wasn't really given a chance to make the roster that year.
McCullers got a quick out but has run into a control problem again. 2 consecutive walks
This was Sparks I assume?
And even more troubles later?
I don't know about McCullers. He has good stuff but doesn't employee it well.
Ashby admits he wasn't watching the game. Asks Blum, "was that a bunt?"
Jesus, look alive George (ran into Altuve ground ball).
They've gotten pretty much squat from Kemp, far less then they'd have gotten from Tucker. What's the point of keeping Kemp around?
Valbuena says suck it doubters.
so hold em (the team) or fold em
when this deal was made by Wade it looked like a great haul for Houston. Singleton is still in the minors struggling, Santana part of the package for Gomez,
Zeid waived. Cosart was a big part of that deal and spun off for Marisnick, Moran, Martes who may be the prize in the package and a compensatory pick that was turned into Daz Cameron. If Martes alone turns into a TOR pitcher this deal will pay dividends and we don't know what Moran and Cameron may eventually produce.
do not be stupid. no one does what you say on purpose. some trades work out, and some do not.
It's your theory so you can do whatever you want with it but it seems that trading draft choices for established players does not diminish the value of the pick.?
Other teams seem to be interested in the Astros minor league talent. Philly, Milwaukee and Oakland took several off of their hands. Yet the farm still seems to be in fairly good shape.
That was my angle. Best case scenario is a couple weeks worth of ABs against AAA pitchers helps him regain his confidence and he can come back and contribute. If he goes down to AAA and hits 210 with no power, I dont think there is any other choice but to cut him loose.
So you're saying these moves in aggregate amount to a decision by the FO to write off this year?
I agree with you that Worth would probably have been of more immediate help. I wonder if Worth is perhaps not at 100% physically. After starting and playing in 28 of Fresno's first 29 games (all but one of those at 2B or SS), Worth then was held out for 3 straight games and has only played in 2 of the last 6 games and both of those were at DH. So the last game he played in the field was over a week ago. That all seems pretty odd given the way he's been playing and the way he was used the first 5+ weeks of the season.
I think even more telling is that Worth would have given the Astros more positional flexibility. Worth can play 3 positions (including SS) while Moran is limited to 3B.
Unless a permanent change is to be made at 3B, whoever got called up is not likely to see a whole lot of playing time. Again that would seem to argue for giving the job to the journeyman player and not to someone like Moran who it does no good to sit on the bench for a couple of weeks. So I find the decision a bit head-scratching unless the decision has also been made to bench Valbuena (or move him to 1B) and give the starting 3B job over to Moran and see how that plays out for a couple of weeks.
I thought for sure it would be White, or maybe a pitcher. But if that was the case what the hell is taking so long? I am leaning that something is going on with Gomez.
Could they make up an injury so he could do a rehab stint in AAA and maybe get his confidence back?
He did that for the first half of last year. It wasn't good enough for the brass.
Or you bring up Kemp. See if there is anything there before next season
As expected, source says Kemp to join Astros
Marwin Gonzalez was unavailable. He said he can't put any weight on his foot after fouling a ball off it yesterday. X-rays were negative.
Carlos Gomez: “It’s my fault. We lost the game because of me today. There’s nothing I can say. And every day, we lost because of me.”
How is it possible that the runner on third didn't score on the 2nd out? I'm watching sans commentary. The infield wasn't in, the ball wasn't hit all that hard, and Altuve slid. Why didn't the runner go? That's a rare break.
Why not pinch hit Marwin here?
Between the hitting woes and reduced velocity on his throws, some guy at Fangraphs thinks Gomez is suffering from "one or more" injuries and needs to go to the DL.

Jake Kaplan reports:
"A promotion to Class AAA for Astros pitching prospect Joe Musgrove is "imminent," general manager Jeff Luhnow said Monday, so much so that the 23-year-old righthander may make his next start for Fresno. Luhnow reiterated Monday he's not afraid to promote pitchers from Class AA directly to the major leagues but said he currently does not see an opening for Musgrove in the Astros rotation. That could change as the season wears on, of course."
Could we upgrade at catcher? Maybe.
Are there other spots (CF, 3b, 1B, SP 3-5) in greater need of upgrade? Absolutely.

Yep. I think the Astros give an offer but he walks and the Astros get a draft pick for him. It was odd to go to arbitration of 250K
I hope White is figuring it out.
I still don't understand. Would the 10% of player income stream be transferred to stock owners like a dividend? and Would the options (or whatever they would be called) be tradable on an open market?
Huh? This is the exact type of deal the company would make a killing on. If he didn't sign a team friendly deal, he would soon have a contract making 15+ million a year, 10% of which would be going to this company. This company could conceivably bank 8 figures on a guy like Altuve.
Altuve didn't have bad luck that this deal wasn't around; Altuve just shouldn't have signed his deal.
help comes from the farm system.
So how long does Hinch last? Current course leads me to believe the All-Star break.
He has to go to Fresno. They can't afford to lose more games simply because he pitches.

The problem is between the ears. I wonder if he's putting too much pressure on himself to justify the trade and be what they and he think he's supposed to be.
I was sure he was going to take a hack at the first of the head high pitches
No I didn't. I don't expect him to maintain that.
ETA: Even without Gomez I don't know that Santana would be on the Astros big league club right now.
If its my money the answer is Gomez without any hesitation. It wouldn't surprise me to see only Velasquez having a solid major league career in the Giles trade. But it also wouldn't surprise me to see Hader, Phillips, and Houser having solid major league careers from the Gomez deal.
You're absolutely right. Correa has been putrid and his lack of solid defense astonishing. I wish that White was a better fielder than he seems to be.
Why would it be bad press to sit a guy who's hitting .180? How is not bad press if you don't?
Why couldnt he just flip roles with Jake for a week or 2?
