« on: August 03, 2016, 12:26:54 pm »
So Hoyt is taking Gregerson's spot on the roster
Musgrove was suppose to take Feldman's, now might be McCullers.
Maybe Rodgers next to take Feldman's old spot
And Reed is up to take someone's spot.  Possibly via a short 3 game hiatus for Fister then either Tucker or White.  Or possibly Marwin to DL

No shock that Gattis makes a strange but true list

Quote
• Billy Hamilton really did hit a home run this year before Giancarlo Stanton -- but, in an even bigger upset, got out-tripled by Evan Gattis. Then again, so did a lot of people. Gattis' mind-boggling stat line: 11 triples, 0 stolen bases. First man in 75 years to hit that many triples but forget to steal a base. Of course he was!

The Astros have had a rough stretch of games on the road, but GM Jeff Luhnow tells the Houston Chronicle’s Evan Drellich that he’s confident due to the quality of pitching he’s received as well as the quality of upper-level players who will join the team in September. The Astros currently have a logjam of corner/DH options that will be magnified by the return of George Springer. As Drellich writes, though, it’s difficult to justify the loss of a player like Chris Carter for little to no return (that is, by way of DFA or waiver claim) when expanded rosters are just under two weeks away.

Correa made last weeks list

Quote
12. Carlos Correa, ss, Astros
Age: 20
Why He’s Here: .345/.441/.655 (10-for-29), 6 R, 6 2B, 1 HR, 10 RBIs, 4 BB, 6 SO, 1 HBP, 1-for-1 SB

The Scoop: A modern marvel, Correa has shown no ill effects from the season-ending broken leg he suffered last June at high Class A Lancaster. By hitting .326 with two home runs in 20 games this spring, he was the toast of big league camp, but what’s really impressive is how he has rapidly adjusted to life at Double-A after missing the entire second half of 2014 and also winter ball. He leads the Texas League with six doubles and 10 RBIs, and just two minor league players have collected more extra-base hits than his seven thus far.

This week there were 2 astros
Quote
8. Brett Phillips, of, Astros
Team: high Class A Lancaster (California)
Age: 20
Why He’s Here: .484/.515/.742 (15-for-31), 9 R, 3 2B, 1 3B, 1 HR, 6 RBIs, 2 BB, 7 SO, 1-for-3 SB

The Scoop: Phillips, who skyrocketed up the Astros’ list to No. 6 entering the season after a fantastic season at low and high Class A in 2014, is only adding to his resume this season in what should be a brief repeat of the California League. His over-the-fence power might be his only question mark, but he rates as a solid-average hitter with good bat control. He plays an aggressive game and has three triples already this season.

Quote
10. J.D. Davis, 3b, Astros

Team: high Class A Lancaster (California)
Age: 22
Why He’s Here: .419/.444/.710 (13-for-31), 7 R, 3 2B, 2 HR, 9 RBIs, 3 BB, 8 SO, 0-for-0 SB

The Scoop: The Astros’ third-rounder out of Cal-State Fullerton, the 6-foot-3 righthanded hitter has slid in adeptly at third base, the position Houston scouted him at Fullerton when Matt Chapman, the A’s first-rounder last June, was injured. A two-way player for the Titans, the Astros liked what they saw after moving him to third.  They were already impressed was his above-average raw power, which he has carried into 2015. The Astros are loaded at first base and DH at the major league level, so the move to third base could speed his ascension. The mature Davis could be in Double-A by midseason if he continues to have success.

This one just is not going to be easy I think (which is a good thing).  Grossman had a nice 3 out of 4 on-base effort Saturday to break a mini slump.  Marisnick has been quite steady at the plate as well.  Singleton has been solid.  Rasmus has done well also.

Gattis/Carter/Springer are all guaranteed full time positions somewhere.

Srping stats of the others (Plate Appearances/OPS)
Grossman  23/1110
Singleton  24/1077
Marisnick  29/1099
Rasmus   14/1167

Carry 5 outfielders?

Is the serious lack of posts due to the crappy level of play at the major league level the last few years or is this forum dying?  I mean this team has a legit shot at greater than 500 this year.  Albeit we can relate to only a handful of players.  Perhaps that is it.  Such a huge turnover of personnel has fans struggling to get into it.

The Bus Ride Discussion Forum / New Astros top 10??
« on: June 26, 2014, 12:31:26 pm »
Last year's midseason thread

What a difference a year makes.  My list from last year:
Quote
1. Correa
2. Singleton
3. Appel (2013 Draft)
4. Foltynewicz
5. Springer
6. McCullers, Jr.
7. DeShields, Jr.
8. Cozart
9. Tropeano
10. Fontana

Singleton, Springer and Cozart no longer eligible.  Appel has dropped off the top 10 for me.

1. Correa
2. Foltynewicz
3. Aiken (2014 Draft)
4. Tropeano
5. Santana
6. Teoscar Hernandez
7. McCullers, Jr.
8. Josh Hader
9. Michael Feliz
10. Kyle Smith
11. Vincent Velasquez - (He'd of been pushing top 5 if it wasn't for the groin set back)
12. Appel
13. Ruiz
14. DeShields, Jr. - (looks like it takes him over a year to figure out each A level)
15. Shirley (older prospect, currently 25 at CC, but potentially a solid mid rotation starter)
16. Kemp
17. Fontana

2014 Draftees Fisher, Reed, Davis and Nix may all fit in there somewhere, so I guess that fills out a top 21

JD not going without a fight.

He's always found ways to get better throughout his career.  That would seemingly fill out the roster quite nicely if JD could LF/DH at around a 900 OPS.  (957 in winter ball using his new swing for the first time).

Talk Zone / This could get interesting

Cubs, Kris Bryant "Nowhere Close" To Deal

This could get interesting because the Cubs are already over slot.  And supposedly signed their 12th round pick to 3rd round money putting them way over slot.  And thus at risk of losing a draft pick next year should the Bryant slot money be lost.

ETA.

For the numbers if it is true that the signed their 12th pick for say around a half million then they are 650k over.  They can go 525k over if they sign Bryant (5% of 10.5 million).  However if they can't then they only have 190k (5% of 3.8 million).  Really tough to make up 460k with the 2nd, 3rd, and a couple of other top 10 picks already locked in.  Boras is holding all the cards if this all is true.  They have to sign Bryant.  He'll make sure they pay Bryant every dollar possible now. Figure he is getting minimum 6.6 at this point.

Flipping through the top 20 prospects lists today on mlb.com.  I noticed the Stros now have 6 of the top 100.  Not sure when they updated their lists.  Apologies if someone had pointed it out.

#25 - Singleton
#28 - Correa
#51 - Springer
#79 - Cosart
#87 - DeShields
#94 - McCullers

Which does not include a certain someone turning heads at AA popping triple digits on the gun.

And of course Appel.

11. Nolan Fontana ss, Astros

Nolan Fontana
Team: High Class A Lancaster (California)

Age: 22

Why He’s Here: .423/.529/.885 (11-for-26), 2 HR, 4 2B, 1 3B, 9 RBIs, 8 R, 6 BB, 7 SO, 1-for-1 SB.

The Scoop: Fontana enjoyed his first week in Lancaster, but don’t expect him to maintain his Cal League-leading .885 slugging percentage. (He also had a whopping .579 average on balls he put in play.) He’s more of a gap power guy. Nonetheless, the Astros’ 2012 second-round pick does know his way around the batters’ box, opening the year on a seven-game hitting streak, in addition to his reputation as a reliable defender at shortstop.

Team Photo:

Asher Wojciechowski, rhp, Astros.  After allowing just two hits in his first two appearances (9 IP, 0 R, 4 BB, 11 SO) for Double-A Corpus Christi, the 24-year-old has shown that he has the makings of a back-end starter.

Unfortunately:
Quote
NOT HOT

Jonathan Villar, ss, Astros. As a 21-year-old in Triple-A, Villar is one of the youngest players in the Pacific Coast League, but he’s been bad in just about every way possible on offense. He’s 1-for-25 (.040), doesn’t have an extra-base hit yet and he’s drawn just two walks. Even on the rare occasions when Villar has been on base, he’s managed to get erased, as he’s 0-for-2 stealing bases despite having excellent speed.

Mike Foltynewicz, rhp, Astros. Foltynewicz has to know he’s going to take his lumps pitching for high Class A Lancaster. His first two outings in the JetHawks’ hitters’ paradise both ended badly, as he gave up a combined 10 runs (seven earned) on 12 hits over five innings. The 21-year-old did strike out seven, but he also didn’t do himself any favors with seven walks.

Should be noted Folty did very well his next start

I know they don't need the production this year, but you'd have this guy locked up till 2016.  2 years into the Astros supposed competitive years.  It's going to start to get hard to avoid losing talent to the rule 5 draft.  Would packaging up some of the top prospects be worth it?  Would you sacrfice a 4-5 prospect type package for the guy?

Could be a package of lots of different players but with log jams forming soon at specific positions, maybe a pacakage like:
DeShields or Springer, Folty, Paredes/Villar, Santana, and Wallace

2013 Lineup might actually be decent:
Altuve
Lowrie
Berkman (if healthy) (DH)
Stanton
Maxwell
Pena (1B)
Pick a Martinez
Castro
Dominguez

Possible 2014:
Altuve
Lowrie
Stanton
Singleton
Some DH candidate (or a Martinez if one should work out)
Maxwell
Springer (if you traded DeShields)
Castro
Dominguez

Talk Zone / DH really?
« on: October 31, 2012, 08:55:09 am »
So mlbtr has the Stros looking for a DH.   Don't they have a plethora of DH candidates in house?  Martinez, Martinez, Wallace/Singleton (they both can't play 1st).   Only reason I can think of for picking up a DH is to trade him away when Singleton gets the call.

Much rather have them look at pitching and more pitching.  Young pitching requires a real strong bullpen.  Like to see them spend about 15-20 million (more) on the pen alone.  Not saying mlbtr didn't say they weren't going for pitching.  But rather have another 5 million dollar arm in the pen then a aging 5 million dollar bat.

The top talent is very young (or not far along) in the Pirates system:

Against righties, bat Wallace 4th and Lee 5th.   Bourn, Angel and Pence have done a decent job of getting on base.  Might be nice to have Wallace bat with more runners on, not to mention Wallace's 370 OBP adding to runners on for Lee.

Some good stuff with the new guys

Quote
Barnett is eager to see what Pence will do this year, coming off a season in which he hit 25 homers and set a career high with 91 RBIs en route to team Most Valuable Player honors. He says Pence is more committed to hitting the fastball to the middle of the field and not trying to guess as much.

"He's got a tremendous feel for what he's doing at the plate," Barnett said. "As long as he prepares well, the sky's the limit. Sometimes it takes guys four years before they get their feet on the ground, but it was good to hear him say that he [wants to] stay focused on the middle or going the other way and hitting the fastball more, because that's where he'll have success. That's my job -- to continue to remind him when he does it right."

well at least Barnett's "job" will be easy.

Go to CNN and read about the Utah execution and read and watch nothing but family members of the killer and PHD observers of the execution.

Go to FOX News and you get statements from the victims of the murderer and facts about what the killer had done to lead to his execution.  (and a couple of lines the killer's family at the end).

This offseason creeps along at a disgustingly slow pace.  What about a trade idea.  Pittsburgh doesn't want to lock Duke to a long term deal.  At they trade deadline last year they wanted a "gaggle of prospects" according to Whitey.  What about a package of Johnson, Gervacio, Palino and either Bogusevic or Yordany.
 - Not excited about Johnson at third next year
 - Gervacio stock is way high right now, seems like a great trade high candidate.
 - Palino is out of options.
 - Bogusevic and Yordany have no where to go this year and probably the 2 years after that unless Wade can pull a rabbit out of his hat with a Lee trade in the window he has next year.

Duke would give the Stros a solid #3 guy at about 10 million over the next 2 years.  (assuming 4 mil in arb this year, 6 the next).  A nice starter to help fill the void as the 2008 draftees get ready.

Try and lock in Hawkins for closer and Tejada at 3rd.  Should have enough cash left over to fill out the bullpen.

Talk Zone / Sampson...
« on: May 16, 2008, 09:25:14 am »
As bas as the end results were, did Sampson really pitch that bad?

The 2 in the first could have been erased if Loretta makes the DP.  And then the final one was Lorretta as well.  Re-listening to that game again today it sounded like a bluff from Lewis pulled Matsui out of position for a possible double play that could of made it 2 outs nobody on to start that 4 run 3rd.  Had luck favored Sampson a little better.  Sounded like he could have gone 6 with only a couple given up.

Talk Zone / Talk about struggling to say something positive...

Keith Law on Towles:
"Towles has had little trouble hitting for average throughout his pro career, but it will be interesting to see what he does when consistently facing big league pitching. Towles sets up with a big, deep load and almost locks his lead elbow; as a result, his plate coverage isn't great and he struggles to reach the ball down, getting very long with an exaggerated finish just to reach balls in the lower third of the zone. He's a dead-pull hitter, which is a good thing for a right-handed bat in Houston's ballpark, but he'll have to show he can adjust to the ball away as well as down. His arm is fringe-average and he's an adequate plate blocker, but isn't plus in any aspect of his defense. Given his performance history, he should be at least an everyday catcher in the majors, but he's not a star and may settle in as a barely average regular."

Talk Zone / With Bradley signing with the Rangers...
« on: December 09, 2007, 05:33:17 pm »
Wouldn't this put the Padres in a need situation with a corner infielder.

We need a front of the rotation starter and they need some real talent in the outfield.  Why not offer up say Pence and Woody(+ cash) for Young.  Williams did really well in the vastness of Petco and Pence would be great to cover some of that extra space.  And if Pence and Woody aren't enough maybe throw in Albers.

We wouldn't be hurt too bad because we have Scott to fall back on and right field isn't all that big anyways.  I mean it would hurt, but help so much more.

Roy, Young, Backe, Wandy and Sampson/Albers/Patton(he'd probably start in AAA) would be an awesme rotation.

"Ensberg followed by ripping a pitch to deep right-center, but Norris Hopper made a running catch on what likely was the hardest-hit ball of the game. Biggio advanced to third on the out." - Ben DuBose

Don't get me wrong, I like Ensberg, still think he can be the third baseman forthis team.  But this was not his ripping out.  That came in an earlier at bat.  The ball was off the end, average depth and Hopper was drifting to his left.

White said. "The only comparison I can make to it is I'm stuck in a big pile of unlucky dog doo, rolling down a hill, and I'm waiting to slam into something, so I can stop."

Now this is some spot-on self analysis.  It describes well what we have been watching.

Talk Zone / Last night..

Albers had real nice stuff.  20 mph between fastball and curve.  His speeds almost mirror Oswalts. 92-4mph heater, 74-9 curve.  2 other pitches 83-84(looks a bit like a slider).  Another pitch at 88-9, not as much movement(maybe a different grip fastball.)  Location can be lacking at times, not bad, but definite room for improvement.  But with the speed differences location can be off a bit.

Can't imagine him holding a roster spot though.  Sampson and Wandy have had only 1 bad start.  Oswalt and Woody aren't going anywhere.

Situational hitting was pathetic.  Ensberg didn't even try to go the other way after Lee's lead off double.  He did smoke the shot in the 11th but looked awful in his other 6 outs.

Anyways, other than the hits just refusing to come at the right time, enjoyable game.

Really settled down nicely after struggling early.  The last at bat against Helms was vintage.  A "no hump" slider that dipped just below the knees for ball one, then 2 knee high fastballs on the corners, and one right on the hands for a swinging strike 3. All 3 fastballs right to the glove.

..see I should have stopped there.

I look up Snell's splits for right/left expecting to see that case of a rare righty that is better against lefties.  I'm shocked and appauled to see Snell's OPS 226 higher against lefties.  I'm thinking(again there I go), Garner has fricken lost it!!!.

Then back to the game and WHACK, Lane homers to left.  And I'm quickly reminded as to why I'm paying 15/month for a 3 by 3 picture and not managing the club.

...sure to be annihilated.  Did Craig Wilson come off the market?  Was the Pirates asking price to high?

Supposedly they were asking for a starter.  Would any of the prospects for 5th starter do?  Say Astacio and another decent prospect.

You'd have to start Willy T in RR, but he'd then be insurance if any of: Berkman, C. Wilson, Lane, or P. Wilson land on the DL.  It would also create a lineup with 5-6(6 if you think Bidge could do it again) 25+ HR guys in the starting lineup.  Sure he'd K alot but who cares batting 6th.  He still gets on base at a decent percentage.

On a side note, it doesn't seem like early to mid May would be out of the question for Clemens, should he return.  He was already up to 5 innings in the WBC and continues to throw (albeit batting practice).  Seems like 1 or 2 starts in the minors would be more than enough.
