White at 1B, not 3B. And just made a pretty decent play.

What's not intriguing is the infield shift. I'm so sick of it.

What was the basis for overturning by the ruling? Was Altuve's foot off the bag? They didn't explain anything at the ballpark.

Did they change the neighborhood rule? Seems like chickenshit to call guys out for sliding into the bag, but then to overturn the call in this case.

They removed the neighborhood rule as part of these changes (since the 2B are "safe" now).

Gomez may be infuriating, but he can field his position.

3-0 Sox, in case anyone is wondering.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

So the solution to one of their marquee darling players playing for one of their marquee darling franchises getting hurt on a clean play in the playoffs is to institute rule changes that tell the second baseman to risk injury but, hey, the umpires will arbitrarily call runners out depending on how and where they slide? I thought getting someone as stupid as Selig out of office would have slowed down the parade of moronic ideas.

Yep. I'd heard about the change, especially after Rasmus being called out for his slide in the Yankee series, but I didn't read the specific rule changes until just now.

B1:

Altuve doubles to LF
Springer walks
Altuve steals 3B
Correa strikes out swinging
Rasmus...3-0...pops out to shallow RF
Springer moves to 2B on a passed ball, just trickled away, Altuve couldn't score
White pops up to 3B

0 for 3 w/RISP

3-0 Sox after one.

Batter reaches on a fielder's choice, gets an RBI.  Ortiz reaches 2B on E4.  So his run is unearned.

T3:

Ramirez strikes out looking
Shaw strikes out looking
Holt chops one past the mound, Altuve fields it, throws it against the dugout...Castro is there backing up, grabs the ball, counts the laces, inspects the printing, then decides to throw to 2B, but is late with the throw.  2-base TE4
Hanigan lines a double over Springer's head, as Springer was playing almost on the infield dirt, Holt scores
Bradley doubles to RF, Hanigan scores
Betts...0-2...routine grounder to SS, Correa with a bad throw, TE6, Bradley to 3B
Pedroia grounds out 5-3 on a sparkling play by Marwin

5-1 now

I'm not so mad about the Altuve call, since the play is now reviewable, as I am about the rule change biting Rasmus in the ass on the slide against the Yankees. The slide rule seems highly subjective, particularly since it assumes the double play.

A couple of angles were hard to tell one way or the other but  I saw one in which it was clear he didn't touch the bag.

The good news is...the Astros have the bases loaded and nobody out.  The bad news is, Gomez and Gattis are due up.

Bases loaded, no outs. Prepare for three pop ups or a double play and a strike out.

B3:

Springer doubles off Shaw's glove
Correa...3-0...3-1...walks
Rasmus...3-0...walks on four pitches, Springer to 3B, Correa to 2B
White sac fly F8, Springer scores
Gomez strikes out swinging, snaps his bat over his leg, slams his helmet in the dugout and pouts
Gattis with a Texas Leaguer to CF, Correa scores...Gattis with his first RBI on the season!
Marwin grounds into FC, Gattis out 6-4

But...Astros plate a pair...5-3 Sox

That's it Carlos. That will teach that bat to make you swing with all your might at pitches out of the strike zone.

I'm pretty sure Ruben Tejada doesn't count as a marquee darling player and I never thought it was a clean play.
I didn't think it was a dirty play or a cheap shot. It was an excessively hard take-out slide but wasn't anything that hadn't happen a thousand times before.

It looks like Gomez is pulling out on everything. Opening up. He won't hit those outside pitches with an oar.

Correa's strikeout pitch was at the bottom of the zone, not belt-high. But his first strike was a belt-high laser-straight FB. At some point he's got to swing the fucking bat. And he needs to quit telling the umpires that they're wrong. That is not going to make his life easier.

Watching at a bar so no sound. The temper tantrum by Gomez was theatrics. The look he gave the camera to make sure it was still on him while back in the dougout betrayed it.

Gattis doubles off the LF wall on the first pitch
Marwin flies out F7 on the first pitch, unable to move a runner to 3B
Castro walks

Barnes out, Tazawa in

Altuve grounds out 4-3, Gattis to 3B, Castro to 2B (would have plated a run had Marwin been able to move a runner along)
Springer flies out F9

Astros now 1 for 10 w/RISP and 18 LOB.

Still 5-3 Sox

Betts forgets there are two outs and doesn't break on contact. He can only advance to third on the Boston Pissant's single.

Probably would have been dead meat at home anyway.

Ramirez seems like a totally different human being from when he played for the Marlins. Almost to the level of Bonds Pirates to Giants. I'm not implying drug use at all, just that he has transformed in a curious way. I guess that's what happens when you get off the island and get something to eat.

You give up 40% of a starting rotation for a closer who isn't good enough to close and who plainly doesn't have swing and miss stuff. That performance chased Crane off. He probably went upstairs to ask Luhnow what the fuck he's doing.

This kid needs to imagine he's a middle reliever working his way up the totem pole not some type of elite reliever. Shit.

I don't know what Luhnow could have done. The price was way steep, but nobody would've expected Giles to post an ERA four times higher than his career ERA.

It might be time for Giles to work it out in the minors. Would love to see Gattis end it here.

Easier to fathom when considering that Gattis is barely above replacement level.

The Astros are 5 - 56 from the catcher position this year at the plate. They're due.

It's a moot point. Nothing like staring at strike down the middle after chasing one he practically had to have paddle to hit.

Shulman called it. If it's close Marwin needs to be swinging. I'm just glad Rasmus took the qualifying offer.
