Astros @ Red Sox, Sunday 5/15
« on: May 15, 2016, 01:00:50 pm »
Walks (2), Castro airmailing a throw into centerfield and a double and Devenski and the Astros already down 2-0 heading to T2.

Also a near disastrous inability to field an infield popup.

Red Sox return the favor as Rasmus reaches on an error, White walks, and Valbuena homers to make it 3-2.

Just watched Scherzer's 20k game. Can't say I regret that much the release of JD Martinez; all that hand-kissing really gets on my nerves for some reason.

After the Valbuena homer, runner on 2nd with none out (Gomez had walked and swiped a base) and Astros unable to score the run.

Now Gomez loses an easy fly in the sun, and that runner scores on a subsequent single. This is going to be a long and ugly game.

Based on this series, you would think none of the Astros players had ever played a day game in their lives.

At least Gomez is still contributing on defense. Loses a ball in the sun for a double. Ground out and single score him, 3-3.

What are the chances we see an electronic strike zone implemented in the next few years?

Very slim. I assume that would require approval from the umpires' union, and I doubt that will be forthcoming.

I've been watching the NESN feed this series. Yesterday they reported that Gomez was, I think, the fourth worst-hitting outfielder in the big leagues.

ETA: actually it was all positions.

How is it possible that the runner on third didn't score on the 2nd out? I'm watching sans commentary. The infield wasn't in, the ball wasn't hit all that hard, and Altuve slid. Why didn't the runner go? That's a rare break.

This team is a fucking joke with Carlos Gomez on the field. I'd rather Marisnick go 0 for 2016 than play another game with Gomez on the roster.

All joking aside I haven't seen anyone this tied up mentally on an mlb field that I can remember. He's questioning everything he's doing while he's doing it. I'm sure the guy "cares" and works... But he's way too aware of how shitty he's been.  it's starting to look like the "yips" but not on a single facet of the game but all of it.

For the first half of last year, I fucking loved this team. I didn't care if they won or lost, I loved watching them. This is the most unlikeable team I've ever seen.

I feel most of my disgust centers around Gomez. I wouldn't be surprised to see the team surge after his eventual departure. One of the players I liked most during last season was Marisnick. He reminded me of the type of player the Giants always have/had during their WS seasons. He's rotting on the bench so far and his dismal stats reflect that.

I'm trying to be rational about this, and I still can't come up with a single reason Gomez should still be on the roster when they get to Chicago.

It is baffling. It's not like there was any question on that pitch to White. He has to be swinging the fucking bat. It's not like he's going to walk and steal three bases.

Hinch confirmed that Gomez called Springer off of that ball in the 7th.

At what point does the continued starting of Gomez give the lie to the "process" gospel of Ground Control?

I feel most of my disgust centers around Gomez. I wouldn't be surprised to see the team surge after his eventual departure. One of the players I liked most during last season was Marisnick. He reminded me of the type of player the Giants always have/had during their WS seasons. He's rotting on the bench so far and his dismal stats reflect that.

I've never liked Gomez on this team. I didn't want him last year and I don't want him this year. Even if he were hitting, I don't like him and don't want him on my team.  But they don't listen to me, so I'll just have to deal with it. But this is not a fun team to watch.

Not sure if it means anything or not but Danny Worth did not play in the Fresno game today.

He's turned into the position player version of Steve Blass.

If released Gomez today, I assume we play Marisnick everyday and his offensive number over four years in bugs are absolutely terrible. Tucker has been sent to AAA for poor performance. What a weekend.

It's amazing how little talent there is in this organization at the major league (and even the AAA) level all of a sudden...
You have three All-Stars in Altuve, Correa and Springer, a couple of promising young starting pitchers, a handful of decent bullpen arms... then it's this generation's version of Jose Lima and a pile of near-replacement level bodies. To the point where the corpse of Carlos Gomez may be your least worst option in center field.

Bregman, Reed, Musgrove and friends are out there but probably still a couple of years from making a difference. They may be in the majors sooner than that, but it's very unlikely that they'll be instant stars like Correa. Even the early 90's teams with Bagwell, Biggio, Caminiti, Finley, Gonzalez, etc. took several years to get their act together.

We're going to need a multi-year rebuilding program to fix the multi-year rebuilding program that failed.

I'm still trying to understand this question.

Marisnick is a superior center fielder and baserunner and no worse a hitter than Gomez. At what point does continuing to start him--which is more and more frequently a decision to jeopardize victories--stop seeming like the right Process thing to do and start resembling the vanity of a GM unwilling to admit that the big trade was an abject failure?

I don't necessarily think we've reached that point. I just think it's interesting.

To go for it all right now to get Gomez and Giles Luhnow gave up:
1 MLB starting pitcher
2 AAA starting pitchers
1 AAA Outfielder
2 AA Pitchers
1 AA
1 A pitcher

That's a lot of upper level players. Not all of them would be useful in Houston particularly Appel and Oberholtzer.

I agree with you totally about Gomez. My stomach turned when I learned they dealt for him. It turned again when I learned what we gave up.
Where I disagree is that I still enjoy watching this team. They battle and they fight back and don't quite. They easily could have won both Sat. and Sun. games except ultimately they couldn't overcome their incompetence in the field. There are a handful of really good players on this team surrounded by a bunch of marginal guys and double-agent Gomez.

It's easy to presume that in such a massive money making endeavor such as the Houston Astros that everything is  meticulously planned. Failures are "accounted for". Contingencies are ready to go at a moments notice. Sometimes people fail. They suck. The Astros suck right now.

Shit fucking happens. Plans don't work out.

I don't see that in this team.  They've scored some runs late in games the last week, but I don't see them battling, and I don't see the same attitude and intensity as last year.  Perhaps I'm just missing it, but there's a marked difference.

in AAA Kemp has played 39 games in CF and 14 in LF.   Whoever can cover more ground seems to be the best choice for CF at MM.

You can't have a noodle arm in CF at MMPUS.  You can hide one in LF, but not CF.

I think where he is played will tell us about his arm. If he is in LF and Rasmus has to move over then we will know why.

I like Kemp, but I don't see him as a superior center fielder to Marisnick, Springer or Rasmus.  I'd be surprised to see him anywhere other than left with that cast.

I hope Tucker gets it together.  His swing was getting awful long.
