Former Astro farmhand Jio Mier, aka the guy the Astros drafted in 2009 instead of Mike Trout, signed a minor league deal with Toronto with an invite to ST.

Joining Candaele as a coach for the Mariners under manager Scott Servais is Mike Hampton, who'll serve as bullpen coach.

Link

Candaele and Hampton were teammates of course on the Astros with Servais (91-93 for Candaele and Servais, 94-95 for Hampton and Servais).

Just to beat this fucker in to the ground, other coaches with Astros ties on Servais' new Seattle staff are Tim Bogar (bench coach) and ex-minor leaguer Mel Stottlemyre, Jr. (pitching coach).

Original Colt 45 Ken Johnson, he the only loser of a 9-inning no-hitter in MLB history, passed away this weekend.

NYT obit (via a tweet from Robert Ford)

Didn't realize until I read the above that he threw a knuckleball.

(Note to the Times: one of the players you mentioned is not a HOFer.)

Check out the boxscore and note the number of future managers in that no-hitter.

I see three mgrs., all on the Cincy side. Robinson, Rose and Skinner. Am I missing more?
Not sure who you are referencing that is not a HOFer. The Rose reference does not refer to him as such.
I remember reading later that Johnson threw a knuckler but I don't remember him doing so. Must not have been a big part of his game.
What sticks out to me is the number of CGs he threw. Totally different era.
I remember listening to that game on the radio. I had forgotten Fox made the error.

Is there some value in getting him on the cheap?  Cleveland is responsible for his $7.5M this year and $9M next so the Astros would only need to pay the delta for whatever they'd sign him for.  It would have to be next to nothing as his production has been in a steady decline for a few years now.

Minor league deal for 1B Jesus Guzman with the Cubbies. A not-so-good 2014 with the Astros was followed by time in Japan last season where he hit .230/.336/.420 in limited action with Hiroshima.

Ronald Torreyes (who was protected on the 40-man roster last year over...oh never mind, I'm sure Drellich will remind us) DFA'd by the Dodgers. If claimed, that'll be his 4th organization in less than a year.

Acquired by Yankees in a deal with LA.

Injury, brief time with the Twins and a subsequent release were the "highlights" of 2015 for Jordan Schafer. Tries to resurrect his career by signing a minor league deal today with the Dodgers.

Hey, former Astros broadcaster* Dewayne Staats published an autobiography last year!

*post-Loel Passe, pre-Milo Hamilton

From the cover:

"Staats reflects on his vast experiences in the booth that include: Being a partner with three Hall of Fame announcers: Gene Elston with the Houston Astros, Harry Caray with Chicago Superstation WGN covering the Cubs and Tony Kubek with the MSG Network doing the games of the New York Yankees, as well as working as a national baseball broadcaster for ESPN. Calling nine no-hitters (among them Nolan Ryan's record-breaking fifth and one of the game's most dramatic - thrown by New York's inspirational, one-armed star Jim Abbott)."

Pretty decent hitter and platoon/utility player. I wonder how much he liked being called "No-Neck".

Has a grand-nephew - I guess you'd call it - in the majors now, I believe.

Brewers GM David Stearns picks up another player he's familiar with from the Astros, acquiring C Jake Nottingham (plus another player) from the A's in exchange for Khris Davis. Nottingham went to the A's in the Kazmir trade.

Chris Carter, Alex Presley, Jake Elmore, Jonathan Villar, Jason Lane (coaching staff), Nottingham all since Stearns took over.

Verrrrrryyyyyy innurestin. Makes me wonder a) whether Billy Beane and the A's soured a bit on Nottingham for some reason since they acquired him, and b) if maybe Stearns really loves Nottingham and opposed including him in the Kazmir deal last summer.

It does make some sense from the BrewCrew side because now they have a spot to play Santana besides CF (although they need to find a CF).

I think this would be beneficial to ALL of us.    $500 per test seems a bit steep but the info it gives is near priceless.    The article said the tests are portable so I wonder what the actual drawing of blood is like.   Would you just have to pop into your local phlebotomist?

Weird. I thought he had a 3-year deal with the O's?

I'm hearing the Orioles are getting a reputation for being ridiculous about physicals (see Gallardo saga).  To the point that one might think they're using information from the physicals that other teams might overlook to specifically gain leverage to renegotiate deals.  When listening to MLB network the other day one analyst stated that he wondered how the Gallardo saga might be making Fowler feel as his physical with the Orioles was to take place the next day.  He said if he were Fowler he wouldn't be looking at the Gallardo saga as a positive.  Sure enough, I guess Fowler decided to cut his losses and take the best deal he could and will try his hand at FA again next season.

Casey Close, who is Fowler's agent, was not pleased.

http://www.baltimoresun.com/sports/orioles/bal-agent-of-dexter-fowler-calls-orioles-irresponsible-reckless-after-client-signs-with-chicago-cubs-20160225-story.html

"In my 25 years in this business, never before have I witnessed such irresponsible behavior on so many fronts," Close wrote in a statement posted on his agency's Twitter account, Excel Sports Management. "Both the Orioles front office and members of the media were so busy recklessly spreading rumors that they forgot or simply chose not to concern themselves with the truth.

"The Orioles' willful disregard of collectively bargained rules governing free agency and the media's eager complicity in helping the Orioles violate those rules are reprehensible. Dexter Fowler never reached agreement with the Orioles and did not come close to signing with the club; any suggestion otherwise is only a continuation of an already disturbing trend."
There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.

Casey seems to get righteously indignant a lot. First it was the Aiken thing that wasn't his fault and ended up costing his player several million $ and now he has cost Fowler a few million as well.  And Fowler will have to go through it again next year if the Cubs give him a qualifying offer.

Casey may be the worst agent around right now.  It is not even close.

Yeah, whether the Orioles had completely honest intentions or not, Close is a fuckin' whiny little bitch and should learn to keep his mouth shut for the good of his clients. And to also blame "the media"? What an absolute dumbass. Baseball media's rumor-mongering is a huge part now of maintaining and increasing fan interest in the game. And thus a big reason why players are getting more money than ever.

I was wrong.  The contract comes with a 5 million mutual buy out.  So basically he gets 13 Million for this year (8 + 5 either way) and he is a free agent next year with no comp pick tied to him.  The qualifying offer was 16 million.  So he is out 3 million.  The gamble he is taking is that the FA outfield crop isn't a packed next year but he has to produce this year.

After a lousy 2015 with the Twins (that would be the Korean version), Lucas Harrell is returning stateside this season and has been working out for various teams including the Tigers.

Did in fact sign a minor league deal with Detroit.

That's as may be but I'm not simply allowing myself to be annoyed for the pure joy of being annoyed. Panama and the province of Cocle in particular - Carlos' home province (and mine) - have an outstanding millinery tradition. No self respecting interiorano would venture out into society without his sombrero pintado, many of the finest of which are made right here in Cocle.

In general they look like this:

http://tinyurl.com/zetzlre

But most fellows wear the front and and often the back brim, too, popped up, carefree and insouciant.

For example this gentleman:

http://tinyurl.com/jgsu4dv

Note that he has the back part down. He also wears his hat well back on his head JimR style. I pull mine down on my forehead.

Ah, I thought I would never find this, Carlos himself in a pintao:

http://tinyurl.com/zqtv4q7

The guy on his right is the current president and neither a very stylish hat man. The guy on our far right apparently keeps his in the back of his closet under eighty pounds of who knows what. Or maybe it was trampled by some of Carlos' cattle, although it looks suspiciously clean.

Anyway, you get my point. It should be emphasized that these have nothing whatever to do with what is commonly called a Panama hat. Those are worn by tourists in sport sandals and fanny packs that one encounters throughout Latin America, and by hippy chicks pretty much anywhere. They're fucking annoying and people should know better. Although if you're wearing sport sandals I suppose having a stupid hat is probably the least of your problems.

As any respectable hat man knows, "Panama" hats, at least them worth wearing, come from Ecuador. They became known as "Panama hats" because 1) that was the place they were sent to market, so buyers from other parts of the world just knew them from their Panamanian distribution, and 2) they were popular with workers on the Panama Canal, and seen in old photographs, so people assumed they were local.  And there is nothing wrong with wearing one in the proper context.  Unlike sport sandals.

Philip Humber, who pitched as badly in Korea last year as he did in 2013 with the Astros, signed a minor league deal with SD.

He had nothing when he was here. I actually felt sorry for him taking the shellings out there. Nothing sucks much worse than getting knocked around the diamond.

Brewers GM David Stearns signs familiar faces Alex Presley and Jake Elmore to minor league contracts/NRIs (per tweets).

Elmore was notified a couple of days ago he hadn't made the club and would start the season in AAA but remains in camp for now. Presley is one of three players still in contention for the 2 remaining backup OF spots.

Human ping-pong ball Ronald Torreyes named backup infielder for the Yankees MLB club.  Carlos Corporan, however, did not have the same fate:

Folty sent down to AAA with the Braves but maybe not for long.

Several players who signed over the winter with other organizations got released at the end of spring training: Jose Cisnero by the D-backs, Jesus Guzman by the Cubs, Josh Zeid by the Angels.

Also, it was noted previously that Joe Thatcher didn't make the major league roster with the Indians. He subsequently refused a AAA assignment and was granted his release.

Wow! Finished with 16 whiffs in the CG shutout. Has now whiffed 25 in just 15 IP in his first 2 starts for the Phillies without giving up a run.

He has pitched against the Mets who have the lowest team batting average (.192) have scored the next to fewest runs (20) in 8 games.

He has also pitched against the padres, who rank 22nd in average .223, 28th on OBP .275. They also lead the NL with 97 strike outs in 10 games.

These are two bad offensive teams.  I am glad he is off to a good start but I am not sure he will fair as well against the Nats, Pirates, Cubs and Marlins.

I always liked VV's arm, but the fact remains that he had trouble putting hitters away when he needed to.  He may turn out to be the next Johnson, Clemens, Tiant, what have you, but the Astros needed a swing and miss closer and acquired one they thought could be it.  It may not work out, not every move does.  But losing good prospects such as VV are part of being a winning team.  You always hate to lose players, but success has a price.

I agree that it's way too early to poo-poo the deal. With that said, I'm fearful that the club doesn't have enough of a starting rotation to compete, but the bats sure aren't helping one bit.

When they get McCullers back, that's a rotation of Keuchel, McHugh, McCullers, Feldman and Fiers.  I think that's pretty strong.  Of course, I'm higher on Feldman that might be reasonable.  Still, the top three are damn solid.

It seems to me that they have almost the same starting rotation as last year once LMJr gets back except they have replaced Kazmir with Fister which should be an upgrade. I don't know if that is enough or not. It would not take much for Keuchel and McHugh to fall off a little and the F's are mediocre. If they are competing by trade deadline I look for an arm added again. Maybe Devenski in the rotation would be an upgrade over someone at the back end.

For a kid of the 60s like me there is a lot of interesting Monkees trivia. Like guys that were rejected for the act such as Stephen Stills and Michael Murphey although Murphey's buddy Naismith was selected. The fact that much of their recordings were done by studio musicians including the great ensemble The Wrecking Crew as well as Stills and Neil Young.

Stills claims that he auditioned some of his songs, trying to sell them to the show, but not for a role on the show, and he recommended his friend, Peter Tork, who was the only real musician of the bunch.

You're probably right, but I wish that 2/5 of the rotation wasn't comprised of guys who pitch to contact, although Fiers has the most swing-and-miss stuff of the three, i.e., Feldman, Fiers and Fister.

FWIW, Dave Cameron of FG is wringing his hands a bit over the velocity drop (and not getting the close calls) of the former.
This is more than a bit nuts after two starts in the cold.

Definitely. I like VV, but I think the front office did what was needed to make the team better this year. Whether the move works out or not is irrelevant, in the sense that it did seem to be the right move at the time it was made.

I think VV might be really good. But I think the Astros might be really good too, and trading him was just part of making the Astros better.

From MLBTR:

"The Rays were confident that they could cure Hank Conger’s throwing woes when they acquired him from Houston this offseason, writes Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times, but Conger permitted five stolen bases in yesterday’s contest and is 0-for-7 in throwing out runners to begin the season. An 0-for-7 skid wouldn’t necessarily be an extreme concern for many catchers, but Conger threw out just one of 43 attempted base stealers last season and has now yielded 44 consecutive stolen bases."

Also, it was noted previously that Joe Thatcher didn't make the major league roster with the Indians. He subsequently refused a AAA assignment and was granted his release.

Signed a minor league deal with the Dodgers.

I remember when Conger threw a guy out late in the season last year. I was really happy for him, because it was his first CS in a long time, and it would literally double his CS%. Then they challenged the call and it got overturned. The guy was just barely safe.

Hank Conger, playing his first game since allowing 5 SBs vs the Indians last week, had 2 more swipes against him last night. Makes it 46 straight and counting.

Also, Alex Presley was called up by the Brewers.

Totally meaningless statistics 101 (saw this on twitter yesterday but don't know who tweeted it): Carter has more RBIs (15) in 18 games played with the Brewers than Carlos Gomez does (14) in 59 games played with the Astros.

Also, Alex Presley hit a 2-run PH homer yesterday to help the Brewers to a win.

ETA:

Lyles, Cosart and Folty all currently pitching in the minors.

Another ex-Astro apparently losing his starting pitching job. Like Lyles and Cosart, Bud Norris sucked in April to the tune of an 8.74 ERA and 1.985 WHIP. He's "available out of the bullpen" starting today says Braves manager (as of this afternoon anyway) Fredi Gonzalez.

Folty was scratched from his start at AAA Gwinnett scheduled for today, leading to speculation that he'll be called up to take the Budster's spot in the rotation.

Perhaps the Orioles simply offered a better deal (higher salary, earlier opt out date, etc.) and/or Wandy saw a quicker path back to the bigs with them rather than the Astros. Although the relative state of each team's starting rotation would seem to make the latter implausible, Yovani Gallardo did just go on the DL for the Orioles so maybe Rodriguez saw an opportunity there. Or maybe Wandy was just pissed at Houston because he thought he pitched well enough in ST to stick with the big club.

That gives the Phillies a 6-game winning streak and they're now 15-10. One of the surprise teams of the year thus far (on the plus side).

I'm happy. I liked Khris. Regardless of how well he does this season remember how unbelievably shitty he was for months at a time last season. It's easy to blame your own team when a player does well elsewhere but sometimes a swift kick in the pants and a "last chance" is what a player needs to succeed. That wasn't going to happen with the Astros and they did all they could for CC.

So Ausmus now has been involved in three 20 strikeout games during his career--two as a player (Wood and Clemens) and one as manager (Scherzer).

There have only been five such games in MLB history.

Folty with 8 shutout IPs last night against KC.  7H, 0BB, and 4Ks. His ERA for the year sits below 3.
Evens his record at one apiece.

His line tonight:

3 IP/ 7 H/ 5 R/ 4 ER/ 0 BB/ 1 K/ 1 HR

Record moves to 1-2.   ERA up to 4/15

He is having a Jeckle and Hyde season.  Two great starts and two awful starts.
Always ready to go to a game.

I wonder if they'll offer him a long term deal.

After a lousy 2015 with the Twins (that would be the Korean version), Lucas Harrell is returning stateside this season and has been working out for various teams including the Tigers.

Did in fact sign a minor league deal with Detroit.

Released earlier this week by the Tigers, signed a minor league deal with the Braves and assigned to AAA Gwinnett.

Humberto Quintero, released by the Blue Jays earlier in the month, signed by Detroit and is now playing at AAA Toledo.

And the Tigers released him last week.

Justin Maxwell and Paul Clemens sign minor league deals with the Marlins.

May see more signings in Miami of former Astros given long-time Houston FO guy Paul Ricciarini's move last month to become the Marlins' senior advisor for player personnel.

Further signings (as indicated previously) were Troy Patton and Chris Johnson and now today a minor league deal with Carlos Corporan (who last week was released by the Rays from AAA Durham). Assigned to the New Orleans Zephyrs.

I imagine that some AZ fans are wondering why Will Harris has caught fire with the Astros.

By the way, his baseball-reference entry has something I've never seen before: his ERA+ is 1020 right now.

Jimmy Paredes, who hasn't played this season due to a wrist injury and just completed a rehab assignment, placed on waivers by the O's.

Claimed by the BJs.

And now DFA'd by Toronto after hitting .267/.353/.533 in limited appearances.

It would have made the Gomez deal even uglier had he been a part of that. Since he has single-handily out-produced Gomez.

One where you don't have to (or feel you have to) "unload" an everyday shortstop/player for a lark.

Nobody made them use his options and nobody made them construct a team in a way felt they wouldn't need him or couldn't use him. He's a versatile player.

I'm no Luhnow basher and I understand if you make enough moves, some will be bad, but why go to such lengths to defend everything he does?  Hopefully Sneed will eventually help.

When had Villar ever demonstrated that he was likely to field any position well enough to be an everyday player? He was an error factory at SS and 3B. We all could see he had tools but always appeared to lack the mentality to smooth out his defense and baserunning. Nor had he consistently hit all that well, for that matter, even in AAA.

You don't think it's just a little silly that you're blaming Luhnow for using Villar's options? His options were used because he was given chances to be an everyday SS. Were you, or anyone, this upset when the trade happened?

I'm gonna echo Bob's sentiment here. Glad he's doing well. Too bad it didn't happen here, but no one could have predicted his current level of play.

First off, I was basically unaware of the trade, and knew nothing of Sneed.  Sneed could end up a stud, and Villar fall off and the trade looks great.  It's possible but not likely.

Secondly, just because you thought he sucked and couldn't see past his errors, doesn't mean that everyone else did. I've never shared a pessimistic view of Villar. I'd seen him since AA and noticed continuous improvement, and knowing his athleticism, it doesn't surprise me that he has improved further. The whole idea that one looks at minor league stats, and then later throws up their hands and proclaims "who could've known" when the future doesn't match the past is a joke. It's like the anti-essence of what GMs are paid for. They are paid good money to know their trade and should be held accountable when they don't.

Anyways, I think Luhnow has done a tremendous job, but I'm not going to blindly look past his mistakes.

I watched as much of Villar as I wanted to in an Astro uniform. I wasn't sad to see him go but I'm glad he's done well. Sometimes a change of scenery and the thought of your dream slipping away is what it actually takes for some players to figure it out. He was terrible as an Astro and he received a substantial "chance". You can't hold on to everybody and hope they all figure it out, you have to make moves that win games at the MLB level. The Astros had Lowrie and eventually Correa at his position (Villar looked terrible at 3rd imho). Villar has a long way to go until he has "made it" and even if he does... So what?

I'd put it in the same category as JD Martinez. Where was JD going to play the year the Astros released him? At the time it made perfect sense, the same applies to Villar. If Villar and JDM are perpetual all-stars then good for them! Saying that it's somehow Jeff Luhnow's fault discounts every coach and analyst employed by the Astros. There were plenty of people that passed on both of them (other teams included). Sometimes (Will Harris, Sipp, occasionally Rasmus) players do well in some places but not others. It's not an exact science.

eta: in most cases I like the fact that a former Astro does well somewhere else. It doesn't reflect a failure of the organization but rather the fact that the Astros saw what that player was capable of. There are far more players in EVERY organization who had "great potential" and shit the bed than players that spent more than 3 years playing mediocre or better baseball with the team that believed in them. Occasionally you hit the jackpot (Altuve).

The Brewers have a SS down on the farm who's just about ready. Villar is nothing but a bridge right now. I'm glad he's doing well, but I'm glad that he's not an Astro because we had no room for him. He made way too many mental mistakes.

I don't think you can compare Villar to JD for several reasons.  Luhnow actually got something for Villar (Sneed has been killing it in Corpus) and there was no place for him to play just like Lowrie.  JD's spot was utilized by the future Twin Hall of Famer Robbie Grossman and he wasn't really given a chance to make the roster that year.

I'd like to think Luhnow learned something from the JD fiasco and that's why he got something in return for Villar and Lowrie, but he also gave away Dan Straily this year who would have been our third best starter by WAR.

I'm glad that somebody mentioned Sneed is having a very good season in AA.  Striking out more than a batter per frame, mostly in a starting role.

JD's spot was utilized by the future Twin Hall of Famer Robbie Grossman and he wasn't really given a chance to make the roster that year.

Actually, JD was signed under minor league contract.  They let him go because they didn't want to pay him 7 figures to play at AAA nor take up at bats there.  Which at the time seemed really odd given his offseason adjustments and immediate success he had with it at winterball.    Detroit signed him as a minor league free agent.  Detroit didn't add him back to a 40 man till after he demolished AAA.

Villar and JD aren't in the same category.  Nobody wanted to even give up a 40 man spot for JD.  He was untradeable.   The Astros were unknowingly granted a gift when JD resigned with the Astros under a minor league contract.  Unfortunately, the Astros chose poorly when they decided not to grant the then 26 year old a spot on the AAA roster and save some cash.  Honestly, a defensible move by them given their expected time table in fielding a playoff team.  That money and roster spot was reallocated to players with assumed higher ceilings.  Though it could be easily argued that it was a really poor decision given Adron Chambers(then 27 year old) and a 310 pound(then 26 year old) played opening day for OKC.  Which means it all came down to the almighty dollar, of which none are mine.

I didn't realize he was on a minor league contract.  If it really was a money issue it makes it sadder because he wasn't arbitration eligible until 2015 so he only made $500K in 2014.

The Astros were unknowingly granted a gift when JD resigned with the Astros under a minor league contract.
This statement is false.  He did not "resign."  Not sure if after clearing waivers JD had the option to bolt.  He was outrighted to OKC, after successfully clearing waivers.  But I believe the outright carried his major league salary, making him one of the highest paid AAA players.

Part of the "positives" for releasing JD was his AAA salary was scaring off other teams

Felipe Paulino signed a minor league deal/NRI with Indians.

Recently released after working out of the pen at AAA Columbus.

Matt Dominguez, out of the majors since 2014, called up by the Blue Jays.

After two recalls from the minors this season (and going 0-11 in the process), DFA'd by Toronto today.

Does the major league minimum really scare other team away?  It sounds like a pretty cheap lottery ticket to me.

I doubt it was even the major league minimum. Just something bigger than the average AAA salary.

Vince Velasquez pulled from his start today after throwing 2 87mph fastballs.  Hate to see that.
You may ask yourself, "How do I work this?"

Opts out of his contract with Baltimore. Had been pitching in EST.

Daniel Mengden (sent in the Kazmir deal) to start for A's tomorrow.

Went 5 2/3 innings,  gave up 6 hits, 2 runs both earned.  Fanned 5 and walked 4.  Gave up a bomb to Jay Bruce.

Winning pitcher was Dan Straily.

It should've been obvious from the way he dominated AAA last year that Straily was an Ace in the making. They were fools to let him go. Fools!

They were fools to get nothing for him. Actually less than nothing considering how Kratz played.

Yeah, I don't have an opinion on Straily, but the whole "he didn't kick ass at X point in time, so who could have known" logic is so lame. It amounts to holding absolutely no accountability to talent evaluation.  I mean, if the minor league projection model got it wrong, it must be indecipherable.  Who the fuck needs talent evaluators when we have baseball reference to tell us the future?

Obviously, given how much Cincinnati traded to get him from SD.

Do you even comprehend what you're saying?
You know the team employs scouts, right?
Do you have a freaking clue how options and the 40-man roster work?

Your apparent point is that the team has no "talent evaluators", or scouts. But since you now acknowledge that they are employed, your apparent point is that the team employs them only to ignore them.

So in your infinite wisdom, who should have been removed from the OD roster to keep Strailly?

Obviously Feliz.  The last bullpen spot was between him, Straily and Hoyt.  Had they kept Straily for at least a few weeks they could have gotten a better backup catcher if the in-house option didn't impress.  Straily's last (and only) start was dominant and he mentioned that he might have turned the corner because of work with Strom or something to that effect.  That start was supposed to be a showcase, he couldn't have pitched better, and he was still given away for nothing.

You have a reading comprehension problem, regardless of how "long you've been here."

I didn't say, nor do I believe, that teams don't have scouts.  If you can read, my point was to the statement that "who could have known the guy would perform better, his AAA stats didn't predict that."  I don't believe that statement came from the Astros.

Once again, that was not directed at the Astros, but to a post above. I don't actually think the Astros operate that way, but in your "always protect Luhnow" sensitivity, it doesn't surprise me that you read it that way.

If I was going to trash Luhnow over the Straily trade, I wouldn't have prefaced it with "I have no opinion on Straily."

That start was supposed to be a showcase, he couldn't have pitched better, and he was still given away for nothing.

So if teams were willing to offer more, then the Astros were just foolish to take Kratz for him.

Did all of these hypothetical offers just vanish in the three days he was in San Diego's roster? How else would Cincy have been able to claim him?
