Starting Rotation
« on: November 10, 2016, 09:14:19 pm »
Still a TBD on whether Devenski and/or Feliz are in the mix come March:

"Devenski was such an important part of our bullpen that it's hard to think about him not in that role," Luhnow said. "But at the same time, starting pitching's hard to find and I think he can do it. And the same thing for Feliz. So, we're going to have to see how the offseason goes before we make a determination on those two guys."

While both will be stretched out in spring training, Hinch currently thinking Feliz is likely to stay in pen while Devenski's role is still on the bubble.

Reminds me a bit of the Elarton situation going into 2000.  Hopefully that is the only similarity between the two squads.
Yay.

Speak for yourself.  I am hoping George Springer shows up to Spring Training with a ZZ Top beard.

Wait a moment...being told we already have one of those.

Mark Berman apparently quoting Keuchel on Astroline.

Anyone listen in and can provide further clarification on the "fluke accident" and what exactly was "fixed"?

I gotta be honest, I never really know what to make of Keuchel's public comments.  When he is doing well, he comes across a bit cocky.  When he was struggling last year, he came across a bit whiney, especially re: the offense.  Now he's saying he was hurt, knew he was hurt and hid it from the team.  This while he was publicly saying he was fine.  Why say anything at all if you know you are being disingenuous?  Maybe he needs to go the the Craig Biggio School of Media Relations...

Keeping this actually game related, here's an article on DK.  May be right if there actually was an injury throughout the year and he has indeed recovered after getting it "fixed".

Why it's encouraging that 2015 Keuchel has a better chance of reappearing, it is beyond frustrating that a player chooses to keep an injury to himself.

You have to wonder if it is really fixed. Injuries often reappear. Let's hope his optimism is justified.

I heard a little bit of Keuchel's interview:

Said he was hurt all year, and it felt like he was throwing as hard as it he could but it came out like an ephus pitch.

Sort of implied that the team knew of his injury, but he didn't discuss it with the media.  But he was coy about it.

Said he shut it down once he realized they were out of playoff contention (though I remember him shutting it down long before then).

He REALLY likes to drink beer.

Alex Bregman is the worst fantasy football player he's ever seen.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

Dallas Keuchel (@kidkeuchy) says injury issues n 2016 centered around his rotator cuff: "There was some major inflammatory & a lot of fluid".

Jake Kaplan ‏@jakemkaplan  2h ago
Lance McCullers has thrown four bullpen sessions so far, will throw his fifth tomorrow or Friday. Focusing on fastball command & changeup. McCullers is working with modified arm action in his motion in an effort to alleviate the stress on his arm when he pitches. McCullers tweaked his arm action last April/May, too, but eventually reverted to what he was used to. Feels more comfortable with it now.

ETA:
More on McCullers, the new mechanics and that elbow strain he suffered last year.

I saw the broadcast. McCullers looked good, got several swinging strikes, and the outs that weren't Ks were weak grounders. His location/control seemed pretty good. They did not have radar gun readings.

anyone know why Martes was lifted after facing three batters today? And it wasn't three-up-three-down.

Looks like it was four batters faced but did not get through the first inning.

Had already tossed 30 pitches. I'm guessing it's that per inning pitch count limit.

So after how many pitches does the next guy start warming up in the bullpen? Doesn't seem like he'd have very much time, unless he was already warm - he was probably expecting to enter in the 3rd or 4th inning.

I think that they started warming up the pitcher around the 18-20 pitch mark.

From what I could see on the Nats TV feed, he had great movement, but his control was spotty. Still, the only one who really squared up one of his pitches was Harper on a 3-1 offering in the first frame, but it was a loud out to CF. I thought that he looked really good for this point, and I was encouraged to see Hinch let him pitch the third inning in his first outing.,

I get the impression that he is to an extent having to re-learn how to pitch, now that his fastball velo is so high. Hopefully he can eventually harness his command of it, and really make it work off of his curveball in a devastating way.

I'm looking over the Astros' stats so far, and this caught my eye:

player  G  IP      H  ER  HR  BB  K
Fiers    9  46.2  54  28  18  17  38
Musg   9  46.1  55  29   9   17  37

Basically, their stats are almost exactly identical except that, as many homers as Musgrove has allowed (1.7 per 9 IP), Fiers has allowed TWICE as many.

Ideally, you'd send Musgrove down to work on some things in AAA, but given the dearth of rotation options at the moment I think they might have to just hope he makes some adjustments and turns it around. Fiers, on the other hand, is a complete fucking wreck of a train that crashed into a dumpster full of flammable excrement. If Keuchel is able to make his next start, I really hope that Peacock displaces Fiers. Not that I expect Peacock to be great - I think the bullpen is his long-term home - but at least he can probably avoid giving up 18 HOMERS and a 1.52 WHIP in 46 innings.

I would think the trading GM would want to wait until the deadline. Get more teams involved in the bidding. And unforeseen injuries could increase the number of teams shopping.

Yeah. McCullers' jump from AA to instant MLB contributor has probably spoiled us a bit, me included.

I still have a lot of hope for Musgrove being a solid #3-4 type long-term. But it's not ideal for a team with big playoff aspirations to be relying on a young guy like that, figuring things out during the season, as your #4 starter.

IMO, replacing Fiers with a traded-for pitcher is enough.  Having Musgrove or Paulino or whoever as the 5 guy who gets skipped around off days to keep the first four on every 5 days is fine with me.

I would think the trading GM would want to wait until the deadline. Get more teams involved in the bidding. And unforeseen injuries could increase the number of teams shopping.

The Astros have an opportunity to win it all, and someone like Cole or Santana or Archer greatly reduces the need to rely on Musgrove/Fiers. I would try to see what can be done now. If too expensive, ok.

I agree with the doubt Paulino is the answer. He will be a rookie in a pennant race.

The thought of cole or archer on this team makes my mouth water.

I'm with you, I'd like to see a move made sooner rather than later. The price on those two guys is more likely to increase rather than decrease over the next 2 months.

The sooner you get your guy the more you get out of him.

Peacock earned another start.

Centeno is pretty damn good too.

Because Fiers in the bullpen for the Astros has been so good.  If Fiers is out of the rotation, he shouldn't be on the active roster.  Does he have options?

Fiers can be a solid reliever, hope his head is into it
There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.

Musgrove's last start is encouraging. He is only 24 and only has 20 major league starts. It is reasonable to believe he is growing into a solid 3/4 starter.

Not so fast, my friend.

Morton to the DL with a strained lat. Jankowski recalled. Fiers presumably back to the rotation.

We weren't exactly counting on Morton to make 30+ starts.

Damn... the article I just read says most lat strains for pitchers are 3+ months.

Sonny Gray had a lat strain in early March and made is season debut may 2nd.

So at least one often injured guy came back in less than 3 months

According to Hinch, per videos on Berman's twitter:

reported soreness after his bullpen, got tested and it was a bit more serious
will miss "multiple starts" , no idea how many, so this isn't a Dodger injury
starting depth "getting tested" (hint, Luhnow, hint)
talked about Paulino, Martes, Thornton, Deetz as getting more consideration than they did a couple of days ago

Fiers really is a fucking cockaroach.
You may ask yourself, "How do I work this?"

Luhnow also mentioned a possible July return for McHugh. Luhnow talked about him on the pregame show today and indicated that things seemed to be going in the right direction for him in terms of recovery.

Nate, did Luhnow talk about any MiL guys today? Sparks usually asks about a specific player that is catching attention.

Kyle Smith and Carson LaRue. As far as the former, mentioned how well he had been pitching lately (just 3 earned runs in last 29 innings) and the fact that he seems to be getting back to where he was before the TJS that caused him to miss 2015. As for the latter, gave a shout-out to scout Jim Stevenson for finding another of those under the radar Oklahoma/Kansas juco signings--in LaRue's case, not necessarily great stuff but makes it work and manages to whiff close to one per inning.

And for anyone interested, all those Luhnow interviews (and other radio pre-game shows) are archived here.
