Changes to Extra innings games?
« on: July 06, 2016, 11:31:34 am »
I was listening to MLB Home Plate (XM) the other morning and the host proposed some changes to the rules that would facilitate scoring and avoid those torturous 18-inning games.

Basically, after 1 extra inning, you'd start with a runner on first. After two innings, a runner on second. Third inning, a runner on third. It would be similar to the California tie-breaker rules sometimes used in youth tournaments, or somewhat like college football overtime rules.

What do you think? I totally agree something should be done to reduce the length of extra innings.

No. It is the greatest game. Leave that for Little Leaguers that have to go home and do their homework.

Well, that's just a stupid idea.  The occasional 18 inning game is one of the joys of baseball. I love the sweet, sweet agony of missed scoring chances and game saving defensive plays. I love seeing the last position player used and knowing that those on the field will have to play out the remainder of the game. I love when the bullpen is depleted and the manager has to choose between position player or another starter. I love the impact on the next game or two in the series. I love the fans that stay for the whole game. I love checking the score at 3am when I get up to go to the bathroom after I could not stay up any longer. I love all of it. What a dummy that guy is.
Another trenchant comment by a jealous lesser intellect.

How about the joy of listening to the broadcasters succumb to delirium?

This idea makes me want to spit.

Speaking from the player's perspective, Todd Hollandsworth was all in favor of doing something to reduce innings.

Playing devil's advocate, extra innings has negative impact on the quality of the product:

-Tired hitters flail away at pitches, making the game even longer
-Increased mileage on superstar players, especially at premium positions
-Game devolving into competition between the ends of the bench.

Holy shit...I cannot think of a worse idea.  Except maybe having games end in a tie, like soccer.  If more than two hours of baseball is more than your attention span can stand, then by all means stop watching.  Don't fuck up the greatest game ever invented because some people can't seem to pay attention.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

The away team currently does slightly better in extras than they do in regular inning affairs.

54% chance of the home team winning any game.
52% chance of the home team winning an extra inning game.

Likely due to defensive strategy out weighing offensive strategy.  I would imagine this would exacerbate that and bring the away team even closer to 50%.

That being said, the whole premise of changing extra innings is ridiculous.

Absofuckinglutely no way. I watched every inning of Cleveland's recent 19 inning affair against Toronto. Toronto determined to use position players to pitch after exhausting the bully in the 17th frame. Cleveland opted to pitch its tomorrow starter. That decision cost the Indians the win streak because of altering the rotation. Toronto won the last two games in the series.

After 9, one roll of the dice determines a winner.

What a fucking ridiculous idea. Leave the rules alone.

At the MLB level, this is really a solution in search of a problem. Shortening extra-inning games comes up just ahead of logo sizing on catcher's masks* on the list of pressing issues for the league to address. For little league, sure, why the fuck not.

*This topic, remarkably, is addressed at length in the CBA.

Get out a batting tee starting in the 13th inning.  Go through the lineup once or until 3 outs, each player gets one swing, defense on the field.  Most runs after 1 inning wins.

The extra innings arrangements are used in the ABL in certain circumstances, only play seven innings in the first game of double heads too.  Those guys fly commercial and a lot of them have regular jobs as well so you can probably make a case for it in that league, but surely not in the Majors?

The minor leagues do 7 innings in  double headers, I think.

Yes, usually double headers are two 7 inning games in the minors.  Unless they are completing a suspended game.  Then that game is often a full 9 innings and the subsequent game is just 7.
Always ready to go to a game.
