The bit at the end about fighting Miami for fourth place almost got by me, though. They should probably acknowledge the move to the AL, even if they do not like it any more than I do.
I'd bring him back only if he could get them back to the NL.
Sorry, but the NL does not suck regardless of whether the astros are there. The NL (for whatever time it remains DH free) holds the torch for REAL baseball. The astros are joining the softball league....I am torn about that and will probably not follow them anymore. I live in Dallas and have been to ONE Rangers game in the last 20 years (a pre-season game with the astros). To each their own, but I cannot follow the stros anymore.
This board is incredible-HOF posters and I will continue to follow this board, but this is a day of incredible sadness for many. Almost like a death in the family.
I don't think we should be going anywhere, and I'm not giving up on this team. The Astros are more than any of the owners or even any of the players. The franchise is an historic institution that was here before many of us were born and will likely be here after we pass away. The Astros (and their fans) have been done a grave injustice by Selig, the other owners and McLane and Crane. They will be playing in a foreign environment under alien rules.
But they're still our Astros, and the best payback for all of this would be for them to rebuild, play by the rules that are imposed on them, and kick the living hell out of their new American League opponents, then get to the World Series and destory whichever of their former colleagues emerges from the National League.
I can't control what McLane, Crane or Selig does. I don't have enough money to buy a team myself. Even if I scraped up enough money to hire a couple of wranglers to go upstairs and beat the shit out of Selig, I've got too much to lose with my wife and kids to go to jail for the mere pleasure of seeing him beaten to a bloody pulp. What I can control is still choosing to follow the Astros. Baseball and the Astros have been around too long, and I've been a baseball and an Astros fan too long, to let some shit-brained fucktard like Selig take baseball and the Astros away from me.
Shit! Next thing you know somebody is going to tell me that my hero McLovin is fake, too.
Outfield isn't the Astros problem.
Wow. Clearly a surprise to me. Will Drayton reach out to him to in an expanded role with Astros if he severs ties with Rangers?Quote
Maybe Drayton will decide he's had enough and will sell the 'Stros to Greenberg/Ryan.

Question: If Ryan loses out in the bidding, does he stay on as President? I hope not. And simply for the reason that if Ryan is not in the Rangers hierarchy, the odds of losing RR to the Rangers is lower, in theory anyway.

It's sad when the classy men in baseball are shown the door while Smith continues pulling the strings in Houston.
The Astros that were so succesful for Drayton McLane were led by Craig Biggio and Jeff Bagwell, guys who were brought into the organization under Dr. John McMullen's ownership.

I watched the All-Star game while I was in Brazil. The spanish commentary was fine- in fact, somewhat soothing. The voice inflection was enough to keep up with the game if I wasn't fully paying attention.
It was interesting to hear them say 'bye-bye' everytime there was a strikeout.
On a related note, there is an ESPN International version of PTI. It was just as annoying in spanish... two men yelling at each other about sports is not good television in any language I guess.
Asked if he would continue to negotiate with the players agents in the days leading up to the hearing dates, Wade gave an emphatic "no."

Thanks for the summary. Incidentally, I was actually listening to that fateful episode, and after Berkman was safely in the dugout where he belonged, one of them said he even seemed confused on the basepaths on Lee's walk. That's confused.
Maybe they can get Bruntlett or Bagwell to give some of them a refresher course.

Ausmus thinks Lidge will be successful again in '07, in large part due to the sinking fastball he used heavily at the end of last season. The fastball, which bores down and in to right-handers is a great compliment to his slider.
Ausmus also thinks Sampson will win the #5 spot in the rotation.

Are you fucking kidding? The words Lidge, Astros, and 2007 should never be used in the same sentence again. He had "every opportunity" to get right in 2006.
So, do you think that the Astros management will trade him in the off-season (for whom or what, I cannot imagine) and absorb most of his $4 million plus salary, or do you think that the Astros management will release him outright and absorb all of his $4 million plus salary?
I don't think Lidge is under contract for next season, he's still under club control. If the club wants to just get rid of him with nothing in return, they can simply non-tender him.

Drayton Mclane Jr., has to be. He let Nolan Ryan go to Texas, he stiffed Daryl Kile, he paid too much money to Jeff Bagwell so that the Astros didn't have any money to field a decent team, he refused to negotiate for Carlos Beltran, he made Gerry Hunsicker leave but not before making him trade Billy Wagner, and running off Jeff Kent. He kept Roger Clemens from ending his story book career in Boston by refusing to let him be traded. Now he won't sign Roy Oswalt and Craig Biggio. He makes Brad Ausmus hit with nerf bats. Plus, the Astros are playing in a dank, antiquated ball park, that hardly nobody goes to and it sounds like a morgue in there.

what will get Lidge traded, imo, is his loss of command/control. when Spezio came up, i KNEW he would get on, and i knew HOW. i would have bet hard-earned money on a HBP, and Lidge did not make me wait long.

Can someone explain injury time to me, please?
Whem a players goes down because of injury, the clock does not stop (as in most other sports). It continues to run. Initially, teams would use this to their advantage and fake a ton of injuries. This was to kill time.
Eventually FIFA installed a rule that would mean a yellow card for a player if he was deemed faking an injury. If, however, a player is injured and in need of assistance, the officials would keep track of the amount of time it took to care for the injured player and tack it on to the end of each 45 minute regulation time. Those two measures have actually helped cure the stupid injury faking that was previlent at one time in FIFA matches. The late 70's were brutal to watch with all the fake injuries at the end of matches.
Also, it's mandated that there's a 30 seconds added for each substitution. Please don't ask me how they can add fractions of minutes for subs but only count injury time in whole minutes...because I just don't know.

Hendricks said. ?If someone said, 'You have to decide today,' what will you do? The answer would be he would retire. He doesn't think at this point, based on the end of the season, that he's got seven months of baseball in him to go through that grind ..."
We told them to do what they need to do," Hendricks said. "If they offer arbitration, we understand. If they don't offer arbitration, we understand."

Ringolsby is not factoring in the Beltran fiasco, nor is he considering that the Astros were very close to obtaining Miguel Tejada. How are the Astros responsible for any race other than the one they are in?
I had a nice little email exchange with Ringolsby, and he apologized for the factual error claiming that McLane ran Nolan Ryan out of town....
on the other stuff, he stood his ground.
However you want to slice it, not offering Clemens arbitration was a business move, and a logical one, considering what the Clemens camp was saying at the time--"I am probably done."

'k,
It is certain that there are many elements that surround to the Stars of Houston and they put them in an uncertain situation: one of its better throwers, Brandon Backe, after having record of 1-0 and effectiveness of 2,25, is in the list of disabled and is going to lose at least six weeks of action, due to an ailment in its left elbow. It caused a series of adjustments that resulted in the presence of pitchers still more inexpert in the rotation: already Wandy Rodriguez, Ezequiel Astacio, Taylor Buchholz and Fernando Snow has appeared in such roll.
Better than nuthin.
Correct, if you already know what they're writing about, you can follow this no problem.

Does anyone know if Jeff Bagwell has tried throwing sidearm? Perhaps a sidearm delivery would be less painful for him.
Bagwell is still able to swing with some authority, and it seems that a sidearm motion wouldn't be much different than his typical batting motion.
Cause blowing out his elbow would be a hoot. No, he's tried cortisone injections, having his shoulder scraped, pins put in his shoulder, he's tried having fake cartilage injections, he's tried lasiks, (but only after his wife had it first), he had a piece of armour especially designed for his left hand, he's tried shot putting the ball, running the ball in, flipping it to Richard Hidalgo for him to throw, he's tried creatine, weight lifting, changing his stance, growing an Amish beard, orange sunglasses, he's thought about throwing left handed (for a half a second while trying not to laugh),he's considered retiring, being traded to the American League, becoming a free agent, he's defied Lloyd's of London, Drayton Mclane, and howling packs of call in show goons, but I've never heard whether he's considered throwing sidearm.

No, it has nothing to do with the brewers. This is something important.
This year I'm my son's team's official scorekeeper, and I thought it would be great fun to actually keep statistics for pitching and offense. Offense is not a problem (except that unless it's pretty blatant and it breaks up a no hitter errors are largely ignored). But when I got to ERA, I realized that the games are limited to 7 innings. Because they're time-limited to one hour 50 minutes, effectively they don't go past 5 innings. So in calculating ERA, it seems to me I should use 5 as the multiple, not 9.
Is this just wrong?
Is *THIS* the moral dilema? I am coaching little league (actually coach pitch) for the first time this year. I've been an assistant coach for many years, but this year they gave me a team to coach. Talk about moral dilema! I can't decide if teaching the kids about the value of cups is necessary at this stage.
I say yea, what say the TZ? If yes, would it be bad to line up two kids and have one with a cup and one without and then show tangible evidence of the need by tossing the ball at said cup and cupless players to teach them the value?

According to a report in Tuesday's Boston Herald, the Red Sox are getting ready to present a serious offer to Clemens, who turns 44 in August. Included in their offer is a DVD video for Clemens in which Red Sox fans plead for the right-hander to return to Boston.
The idea for the video came from team chairman Tom Werner, a Hollywood producer who knows a thing or two about putting together a quality show.

I don't know how much substance there is to this rumor but I read the article on Huff earlier today and figured there would be rumors starting. Huff hasn't been a happy camper since before last season. His performance dropped off significantly last season and while it's been too long to find the articles I read at the time, I suspect Huff was pushing for a trade last season.
Other way around. Huff was happy enough with TB to sign a three-year deal avoiding arbitration a few years back, IIRC. This was after his breakout season. At the time, the club held him out as an example of a quality player who wouldn't flee St. Petersburg as soon as he was able.
Since then, the team has offered him (or has been rumored to have offered him) in all sorts of deals. The rumors were at their apex last season. Most people watching were almost sue Huff was gone.
I believe it was somewhere in there that Huff became disenchanted with the franchise. I also believe he was injured last season.
Huff plays all the positions Lamb does, but with more skill. 3B is probably his natural spot, but he has done OK at 1B and in RF. A solid MLB hitter, left-handed, with power and average and OK plate discipline who can and will play three positions adequately, and is relatively cheap -- those don't come available every day. Keep in mind, too, Huff has put up the numbers he has in a home park much less hitter-friendly than MMPUS, playing for a crappy team and a screwed-up owner, with little support around him in the batting order.

I think a team will end up in Vegas sooner or later. Maybe later though, because they don't have a stadium. AAA Cashman Field sure can't support an MLB team. But I think what they're counting on is building a fancy-ass whiz-bang stadium near The Strip, and getting tourists to see games.
What's the point now? With you out of town, the prospect of 72-hours of CTB, Foggy, drinking, baseball and no sleep is deader than I would be after 72-hours of CTB, Foggy, drinking, baseball and no sleep.
Well yeah, but airfare to Vegas is always going to be cheap, so there's still the possibility of roadtrips. Which is why we should all hope the Marlins land there and not the Twins, because who wants to roadtrip to American League games?
I'd like to see Vegas in the running, just for the sheer spectacle of Mayor Oscar Goodman being in the nightly sports news. That's entertainment gold right there.

Very delicate situation for Selig. Last time they used the contraction ploy, Congress started writing bills to restrict their exemption. Messing with DC wouldn't be a politically smart thing to do.

I have to agree with this at the risk of getting flamed. OTOH never in a million years did I expect Baggs to be pinch hitting by the playoffs after surgery.
I would not be surprised to see Bagwell limited to pinch hitting duties. Although he would be a high priced bench option, he would be damn effective in the role assuming he can have range of motion to hit the ball with some power.
Refresh my memory. Has Bagwell clearly stated that he would retire if he could not play his position?
No. But I have heard people who know him and have talked with him, and they all seems to feel that way, as long as the Astros Organization doesn't treat him poorly between now and then as he genuinely tries to make a go of it.

So which guy would we rather have? Nomar or Rondell? Either one could wind up on the DL before the season ends/starts. I think I have to go with Nomar, no statistical reason, just a feeling.
I don't care as long as we come away with one of them. Rondell should be solid offensively and defensively, and judging by his last deal, should make less than $3M if signed.
Nomar on the other hand, provides more upside offensively and more downside defensively. I've read about him turning down two offers of 1 year at $4M. I've also read that he's received offers as high as $5M (most likely from the Yanks).
So based on that which one would you rather have? Again, I like them both, but I'm inclined to take the upside of Garciaparra at $5-6M if he can be had for that.
I've read that Rondell is terrible defensively, at least his arm is terrible. But you would know what you were getting and he would be cheaper.
The other thing you're getting with White is a good clubhouse guy (don't you roll your eyes at me...) Garciaparra is a big ol me monkey.

I doubt the Astros want to invest a lot of money in a left fielder precisely because Berkman might wind up there. They want someone cheap who, if necessary, can play either corner as a fourth outfielder or can start if Bagwell cant' play. Mench fills that bill. I don't understand why they'r hot to get a right-handed hitter, though, since they only have one left-handed starting position player.
Wouldnt Burnitz fill that role just as well? He wanted to come to Houston last year, He is from Conroe(I heard) and hell, his name starts with a "B". The best thing about it is that you dont have to trade to get him. IMO that would be just as good as Mench.

Roger Clemens will be wearing a different hat in 2006. While it might seem the Astros would not expand the budget now that their biggest-ticket item is gone, I would suspect otherwise.
I believe a blockbuster deal is on the way and it might include more than one team and involve the Astros having to expand their budget in order to make it work Brad Lidge is on the trading block, is my hunch. He has been and will be offered, because he is the best commodity -- and would bring the most in return. The Astros also feel strongly about Chad Qualls and Dan Wheeler perhaps sharing time as the 2006 closer, relieving each of some closer pressure, until one distinguishes himself.
Mark it down.
They're dangling Lidge and another player (not Jason Lane) and dealing for an outfielder. The magnitude of this deal could shock you and make you feel a bit better about losing an icon ...
Translation:Lopez thinks we might trade Jeff Bagwell and Brad Lidge for Manny Ramirez.
That may be the deal, who's to say at this point? All we know so far that it's going to be exciting. Now we've added "shocked"? However, hows losing another icon going to make me (atleast) feel better about losing the other icon?
