Scott to San Diego?
« on: December 04, 2007, 02:33:07 pm »
So says Buster Olney in the latest ESPN blog update:

Quote
• The Astros and Padres have talked about a trade that would send outfielder Luke Scott to San Diego. And it appeared the teams were moving toward a resolution.
I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing AstroTurf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, torture of Bud Selig.

I'll close my eyes and hope for Headley.

There's quite a bit of talent in that bullpen. No point in me taking a guess (I'd be wrong), but there are easily 4 guys who could help the Astros.

Do we have any extra "y"s that we could send for Cla Meredith to sweeten the deal?

i was thinking the same thing and am looking at the pads bully now.  names that come to mind are cla meredith or heath bell, but bell is the setup man for hoffman IIRC.

[uninformed]I had thought SP originally, but the only one that seems to pair up with Scott at all in value is Germano, and that just doesn't sound right. Based on the exactly nothing that I know, I think they'll try to trade for one more RP, either to close or to set up Qualls.[/uninformed]

not funny.

Ensberg to third, Wigginton to second, Matsui to short, Lane to center, Bourn and Everett to Baltimore for Tejada to come off the bench.

Actually, I thought it was hilarious.  I even laughed out loud.  It was a nervous laugh, though.

Houston did SO well in 2007 that San Diego, who lost the one-game play in to the playoffs in 07, said "I want me some of that!"

And has acquired Ensberg, Lane and now potentially Scott....

I guess it takes some people a bit longer to learn that ramming your head into a wall is going to hurt you more than the wall.

MLB.com is stating that it would probably be a Padre prospect for Scott.  They speculate that the Padres may make available catcher Nick Hundley, outfielder Will Venable or pitchers Josh Geer or Wade LeBlanc.

Geer is a Rice guy, so I'm sure Drayton has put Wade on notice.  Not a bad thing (actually) as he went 16-6, 3.20, 102 K's, and 27 BB in 171 IP.

I find it hard to believe the astros can't get a major league ready pitcher back for scott.   Especially considering the corner OF market led by jenkins who isn't paid near the minimum like scott.

By "find it hard to believe" do you mean that you don't understand why teams aren't offering more for Scott or that the Astros are unable to negotiate more?

Not the astros end at all.   But if I was a club looking at paying geoff jenkins 7-8 mil a yr, i'd be more than interested in scott.    Now perhaps clubs see him blocked and think they can get him cheap, or perhaps wade is looking for prospects in return(or maybe a combo of both), but you would think his cheap salary and the dearth of corner outfield talent in this market would net a player that could help them longterm and in 2008.

I think his inconsistency, below average defense, and tendency to injury work against him.

All true and I never thought scott had a ton of value, but I figured the Astros might look at teams with some pitching depth at the major league level and get a buy low type starting pitcher candidate in return.  An example would be cliff lee or jeremy sowers in cleveland(both had horrible years in 07 but have talent).   But we will have to wait and see what transpires.   A good prospect pitcher would not be a bad haul as well.

Rays apparently close to a deal for a RF.  Not sure if Scott would be an option, but thought i'd pass it along.
