"New York is Where God Wants Me"
« on: December 10, 2006, 12:31:03 pm »
I know New York is where God wants me and where he's put me for this year.

I know we all wish we had Steinbrenner as an owner of our teams, but I'm not sure I'd call him "God".

Did really say that?

?I?m excited to be going back to New York,? said Pettitte, who pitched for the Yankees from 1995 to 2003 and won four World Series titles. ?It?s where I need to be. ?Was it tough to make that decision? Yeah, especially after being in Houston in this laid-back lifestyle. I know New York is where God wants me and where he?s put me for this year. I?m just looking forward to helping them win another World Series. That?s the goal.?

 He really did.

He never said WHICH God.  Why would you assume his God is yours?

More likely, he believes in a deity that wants you to be prosperous and spread your seed.  Andy can do both of those with a lot more ease in NYC.

that is such bullshit. God has many important things to worry about. i cannot stand sanctimonious bs like that, especially when it was all about money.

Andy keeps making it worse every time he talks.

Just read pravata's NYCU and let me see if I get this straight: 3 days ago, his arm hurt so bad, he wasn't sure if he could play next season, now he's ready to go 2 seasons because he's making $16m per.  It's a fucking miracle.

I am just curious, but if the Astros or even the Royals had offered him 25 mil per, would God want him to go to one of those places? And I thought the Hendricks boys were his agents. I guess God wants you to go to the highest bidder. So, which ever team offers the most money is the team God wants him to be on. Now I get it. It wasnt Andys decision or the Astros low offer, it was God we are supposed to blame. Its like you watch these guys become snakes right in front of you.

Maybe God made Beltran use the Astros to drive up his price too.

he really does make me sick. if really he wanted to stay here, would the union let him accept only one year at $12 million?

it was money and only money.

In other news, God says that it's easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than it is for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven.

I don't know where the dividing line between rich and not rich is, but I hope for Andy's sake that it's not between $12mm and $16mm.

Mammon
Composer: Todd Rundgren
Duration: 4:46

O Holy Father
Divine Provider
Grant me my prayer
All I desire

It's been a long, long time since you faced the truth
You haven't heard the voice of god since your wasted youth
Faith of your father, holy faith
In the dollar almighty and the tithing plate

And you'd like to rub my face in it
Your god, your god
And you'd like to rub my face in it
Your god, your god, your god is Mammon

Pew after pew in the house of the lord
Nod their heads at the sermon while they mind the store
And their holiest book is a PDA
It's got god's cell number if you find time to pray

And you'd like to rub their face in it
Your god, your god
Even though you have no faith in it
Your god is Mammon, your god is dead

And you rage and fume at the godless ones
Cause they don't understand how the company runs
And they think it's the money that you care about
You pretend to be offended when they figure it out
Tell me what kind of heaven do you think awaits
When your ass is too fat to fit the pearly gates?
It's like the eye of a needle and a limosine
Paradise is set aside for the less obscene
You only care for the power that the lucre brings
And you have no love for any living thing, save Mammon

And you'd like to rub our face in it
Everyone's talking, few of them know
The rest are pretending, they put on a show
And if there's a message I guess this is it
Truth isn't easy, the easy part's shit

I'm in Beaumont because that is where God wants me to be.  Yes.

Whether that means Andy's God and the one I subscribe to are the same or different, that is left primarily to idle speculation.

I am pretty sure this is the first time I've invoked the name of The Big GM, even jokingly, to justify any earthly action of my own.  I plan on going to confession the next seven or ten days, for starters.

Wow, that's the first time I've ever heard anyone blame God for them being a money-grubbing whore.  And I'm not necessarily down on being a money-grubbing whore.  If AP had said "Hey, the Yankees offered me a better deal and I took it.  No hard feelings, it's only business", then I'd be fine with it.  But this crap about "God wants me to have that $32 million, I had no choice" makes me want to puke.

Seriously.  Be a fucking man and take responsibility for your decisions.  You took a higher offer?  fine - but don't justify for yourself by pointing to god or moan and groan that the astros didn't love you as much because they were looking into other options in case you retired / left.  I didn't lose respect for pettitte because he chose to go to the yankees.  i lost respect for pettitte because when he explained his decision by pointing to everyone else's actions except for his own.

Crom, I have never prayed to you before. I have no tongue for it. No one, not even you, will remember if we were good men or bad. Why we fought, or why we died. All that matters is that two stood against many. That's what's important! Valor pleases you, Crom... so grant me one request. Grant me revenge! And if you do not listen, then to HELL with you!

If AP had one wish that he could wish this holiday season, it would be for all the children of the world to join hands and sing together in the spirit of harmony and peace.

What AP needed most in this moment of reflection were better cliches. Unfortunately, he didn't deliver.
