Who?????
« on: November 30, 2005, 09:03:02 pm »
Since it was recently mentioned about possibly Lidge being on the block for a hitter, who would you be satisfied with if Pup traded Lidge?

I read where there are alot teams, Philly especially, looking for a closer and are willing to pay a premium. Humor me please?

Ryan Howard.  Not that they'd let him go, given that they've already sent Thome packing.

If the Astros traded Lidge for Ryan Howard, i'd be incredibly pissed off.   Brad Lidge is worth much more than that.

I agree. We should be able to score Abreu for Lidge.

I seriously doubt this is in the realm of possibilities.  It would leave the Astros with as big a hole as they currently have.  I appreciate the hypathetical question though, and would say Ryan Howard has shown exactly ONE HALF year of Major League success to Mr. Lidge, who is one of the best in the biz.  Throw in Abreu and a parking attendent and then we're talking.

Fuck yeah!  Howard is DWard with a slightly better average.

the Phillies are not sold on Howard. Abreu definitely is available. i doubt Lidge is.

The Astros would also need the Phillies to toss in about $12 million.  That seems unlikely.

If a trade were to happen, I'd hope it was Chad Qualls, Chris Burke, and a minor league pitcher for a bat.... good god, don't sell Lidge!!!

And Abreu is rumored to be on the block.  Apparently they don't like his all-around batting approach instead of just trying to crush homers.  I guess that homerun derby display convinced Philly he was slacking off!

That "homerun derby display" fucked him up.  I think it took him around a month to hit his first homer afterwards.

That was meant as sarcasm because he's one hell of a hitter.  Seriously, of his 8 full seasons in the majors, he's only had 2 with an OPS below .900.  Realizing that's only descriptive, that still one hell of a description.  Of the hitters I've watched, Bonds and Pujols are the most awe inspiring and devastating hitters.  I put guys like Berkman a notch below that.  I'd give Berkman a bump over Abreu but not by much.

As I'm perusing Abreu's stats, combining hits w/ walks, the guy is a tick below 300/yr over the past 8 yrs.  It's just plain absurd to trade a guy like that.  Do they have some uber-stud coming up in the system with which to replace him or are the Phil's that desparate for pitching?

I think a lot rides on Clemens.  If he returns, I think the club stands pat and relies on a full year of a more healthy Berkman, Ensberg not taking the year-end off and pray that Bagwell can play.  If Clemens goes, there may not be enough starting pitching to be a pitching-and-defense team, so they'll need another bat.

The irony is, if Clemens doesn't come back, do the Astros have enough pitching to sacrifice in a trade to land a bat?  I don't think they have enough "proven" pitching to do that...

What? We will be competitive with or without Clemens. The reason Pup and The Grocer are looking for an answer is because there will be money to spend if he is not coming back. And I'm not sure it will be spent on pitching if Clemens goes

"Competitive" is a pretty vague standard.  I'm looking for a team that can legitimately challenge the 3rds for the NL Central, not simply finish ahead of the Brewers and Cubs (in that order).  Without Clemens and without an improved offense, the Astros will be closer to the Brewers than the Cards.

FWIW, last year, when they went to the WS and all, the Astros were closer to the Brewers than they were to the Cards.  (in the standings, at least)

As much as I would love to have Abreu... and I floated Abreu/Lidge previously... the Phils are a problematic trade partner in that they are already set at 2b for years, so we don't get to pawn Burke off on them.
I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing AstroTurf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, torture of Bud Selig.
