Talk Zone / Johnson/wallace to OKC - Paredes/Bogusevic to HOU

The Astros have sent Chris Johnson and Brett Wallace to the minor leagues and recalled Brian Bogusevic and Jimmy Paredes, who will play 3B.

hey braves, you got the player you wanted, from the ASTROS.  shut the fuck up.

From what I've seen and read (from folks like Footer, etc), if Berman says he has Astros info its pretty much gospel...
berman usually scoops everybody with sports news in Houston.  i'd take what he says pretty seriously.

One of the local Austin sports anchors led off the highlights package with the clip of the guy falling, and I damn near thought he was about to make a joke... it was very nonchalant, right up until he said they guy had passed away. I couldn't tell if he knew beforehand or if he was just reading the prompter.

Very sad story.
on-air talent typically write their own copy to go along with the clips, so he probably knew.

Sadly, no. There was more: lobster rolls on Friday, clams and fish on Saturday, and 'Sweet Caroline' today.

For a bit at least, this'll be my memory of Drayton's legacy in Houston: first 100 loss team in team history, allowing Bud to make HOU play homes games in Wrigley north, and allowing Sweet Caroline to be played IN OUR HOUSE! Screw you Drayton! (And yes, I'll get over it, but still, PISSES ME THE HECK OFF!!!)
why didnt they fly neil diamond in to sing it live?

Brett Wallace could probably use some practice hitting against lefties.  I hate it when Mills won't let him hit against lefties.

Plus, it couldn't have been any worse than what Michaels did.

Fulchino and Myers might be legit choices, but for me I think I want Kepp and Downs.  Thoughts?

I'm conducting the "waive Bill Hall" train, but I'm also ready to eat the rest of Lee's contract just to open up the AB's.
agree 100%.  does bogusevic step in?

50
bill hall. that ball bounced at 55 feet.

51
nice stroke by bogusevic.    the passed ball saved him from getting "picked off."

52
Lee would have caught that ball.
i guess. he's still shitty.

53
you could have left lee in LF to take that angle.

54
why did hall cut that off?

55

If he'd played like today's Berkman he'd still be in Houston. He didn't.
i have an idea.  no offseason flag football, don't show up to camp with a bum knee and 20 pounds overweight
and don't complain when the Astros decide not to resign you after hitting .248 with 12 (i think) home runs the year before.  it will
be a bummer seeing him come to MMP with the turds, but i am fine with the way the Astros handled things with him last year.

he has nowhere to hide with pujols at 1B.  i still don't think he plays 150 games in RF this year.

i still don't think he is getting $800 million, even with comcast on board.  forbes had the franchise deemed to be worth around $450 million seven months ago.  i don't see how it adds $350 million to the price, but i could be wrong.

Talk Zone / Re: Paulino to Rockies

As much as I dislike Lee's play in LF, I don't see anyone on this roster than provides the offense he can provide.  That said, I think we will see Lee at 1B far more than LF, if they can find a solid left handed bat to platoon with Michaels.
so what about wallace?  not saying he is the second coming of 5, but he seems like he doesn't need to be in AAA anymore.  if you knew you were planning on going with the 1B platoon with lee, why did you make wallace a centerpiece of the oswalt trade if he won't see regular at bats until 2013 (if lee plays the balance of this contract with the astros).

i know there is more to offense than home runs and runs batted in, but pence hit more and drove in more of both than lee last year while striking out about 50 more times.  his batting average was 36 points higher even with those strikeouts.  at this point in their careers, i think they are similar players performance wise.  both are 25/90 offensively and below average in the field.  i don't see lee's bat as being completely irreplaceable, especially with continued development of johnson, castro and wallace and whoever would replace lee in the outfield.

With Wade, this seems like the first domino.
i though the same thing, too.  the valverde trade with arizona came a couple of days after the tejada trade, IIRC.

i'd like to see if there are any takers for Lee's remaining deal, but that seems remote at best.

i wouldn't be disppointed if the team didn't pursue him.

the marlins seem to like middle relievers in exchange for their blue-chippers.

plus there's that thing about him wanting 5 years/60 million.  he turned down 4/48 from the marlins.

would like to see them kick the tires on gordon beckham if kenny williams makes him available.

bill berry had the aneurysm on the monster tour along with stipe and mike mills having surgical procedures.   they signed an (then record) 80 million dollar contract with warner brothers before the release of hi-fi.  hi-fi was recorded on the monster tour and berry left the band just before the beginning of sessions for "up."  i haven't kept up with them regularly since monster, although i did go see their tour in 2003 at a 1/3'd full woodlands.

147
Talk Zone / Re: Stark: Oswalt to Phillies?
« on: July 27, 2010, 05:05:13 pm »
I don't quite understand why they asked for Loney or Kemp in the first place; a) no contending team wants to give up major pieces of its lineup in-season, and b) those guys are going to be expensive (and/or free agents) by the time the Astros are close to good again anyway. Not to mention Loney seems like a good but not great 1B- .290 hitter, hits about 13 HR a year. I hope its not because he's from Houston.
i think a piece like the brendan ryan types (plus younger high end talent) would be reasonable as far so requesting something off the major league roster.  as reuben said, what team wants to ship off major pieces when they are trying to improve?

i understand wanting players already on ML rosters, but is this just to tread water with the same core you have?  i dont think this team gets drastically better until 45 is somewhere else, pence takes a drastic 180 at the plate and some of that young SP talent starts to hit Houston.

Oswalt lifetime vs. AL teams: 11-9, 3.73, 28 GS, 186 IP, 155 K, 47 BB, 1.33 WHIP. In other words, a slightly higher ERA but otherwise pretty darn close to his career averages.

this is crap.  they want to have the NTC renogotiated, dont want to give up shelby miller, and give us a(nother) light hitting middle infielder along with a 4th outfielder type.  how fucking generous.

plus, the cards (allegedly) are the real team roy wants to go to.  you are almost forced to find the right deal with the cards or potentially wait until the offseason to do something.

I don't want Happ.  He's 28 and coming off injury.  I hope they're not interested in anyone who'll be at least 30 by the time the team is ready to start becoming competitive again.  I'm not hearing much promising about St. Louis's crop down on the farm either.

Might need a third team with a deeper, richer prospect pool to get involved.  Like the Rays.
but the deal with the rays is that they were (allegedly) getting werth their way so they would send players to the phillies.  i would hope happ isn't a centerpiece of a possible phillies deal, either.  the three-way deal with the rays seemed like a pretty good option. i like that there seems to be a legit market of contenders supposedly interested.

Can I just say something here? Because virtually all the shit that I read that talks about teams possibly trading for Roy makes this huge deal about how big his contract is, and that he would have to be paid for not just this year, but- the horror!- NEXT year, too, when he'll still be under contract. So I just want to get this off my chest:

Let's try a different tack: What if Oswalt were a free agent right now? You think you could sign him for a two-year deal, for less money then he's owed right now? Did you hear about the Lackey contract? Who would you rather have on your team? Do you start to get the picture? Yes... that's right, motherfucker: Supply and Demand. Two very powerful forces, very much at work here. Now, if you offer up better prospects than anybody else can, I have a feeling Drayton might toss a few mil your way... maybe. So, how badly do you want to get to the playoffs this year?

Sincerely,
Reuben

i saw today that a key to the braves-blue jays trade was alex gonzalez' option for next year.  granted, it is only 2.5 mil, but i would think that having one of the best pitchers in MLB over the last 10 years pulling down market value would be attractive.

Consistency maybe?  Game story LINK

Lyles: "I hadn't had a good curveball for most of the year," said the South Carolina native, who also throws a fastball, cutter and changeup. "But that was there tonight. All of [my pitches] felt pretty good coming out of my hand."

"Coming into this year, I just wanted to work on my curveball, make that a more consistent pitch.  Up 'til now, it hasn't been too great. But it worked for me tonight, so hopefully I can start putting together some more good starts."

cool.  i try to keep up with the updates you guys provide but dont catch everything.  it's good to see he at least has an idea of what needs to go on.

right...because ESPN never poaches a story and then takes credit for the discovery.

if one had to pick, what would you choose to take lesser prospects in return for the salary relief, or assume more financial responsibility and get a higher pedigree of talent in return?  it's not my money, but to me it seems to be more about restocking the farm system, so if i had to assume some of financial responsibility i'd do that.

my favorite Limatime memory was a saturday (day) home game early in 2000 against the Padres after he had a bad start the the night before.  I had gone to the game myself, and had gotten there pretty early just to check things out.  i saw Limatime about 3/4's of the way down the first base line sitting on the railing, apparently signing anything that people put in front of him and taking any picture people requested.  there was was a line almost all the way to the concourse and i decided that i would hit the gift shop to get a pen, program and camera.  i was able to go do all that and get him to sign my program and get a picture with him, glove on head and everything.

you hope every athlete or famous person you come into contact with is that cool, and Limatime was.  reading the stories of people here in the TZ, he was like that ALL the time.

RIP Limatime.

while the on-field results on the major league level haven't been -great,- i am encouraged the actual plan that wade and bobby heck have put together.  some of that 2008 draft class will be seeping into AA this year, and castro might be starting before 2010 is up.  the decision to offer valverde arbitration was a stroke of genius, giving the team three picks in the top 35 selections this year.  many see the 3-year deal to lyon and cringe...i see it as 5-6 million to have your 8th-9th innings locked up with lyon and lindstrom.

i am very interested to see if they seek a 2nd baseman with one of those picks, a fast riser like castro.

anyway...i am definitely more enthused going into this year than 2009.

If nothing else, the "wager" bullshit shows his true colors.  He's trying to prove to us that he's the expert.
-draft smoak because he is the best bat in the draft.
-hope berkman/lee go down.
-if berkman/lee stay healthy, trade smoak to someone looking for a bat in 2009 or 2010.

doesnt make much sense.

Maybe if the MLB draft was more like the NFL draft. I simply don't agree with drafting based on the needs of the current ML roster. The system is close to empty, BPA makes sense.
but if the guy is so major ready that it would retard his growth to keep at RR, then looking in another position makes more sense.

I would've loved for Houston to have this kid drop down to them at 38.  A reliever is hard to justify so high, but that's two relievers (Josh Fields and now Daniel Schlereth) in the first round.
i think they said cashner (to Cubs) was a reliever also.

Not sure if you're saying the Astros' approach is better or worse than the Mets' approach, but to me Smoak was a no-brainer pick at #10. A lot can happen in a season or two. Even if he's ready to play next year, the Astros have some flexibility with Pence able to play centerfield (not too far below average from what I remember) opening up right field for Berkman. Passing on a relatively can't miss (as far as the MLB draft goes) 30+ HR switch hitter who is almost ML ready is a head scratcher, in my humble opinion of course.
i could be worng, but i am almost sure the astros thinking is 100% opposite from yours in regards to pence to CF and berkman to RF, especially if they were moving for some cherry draft pick.

Is Smoak a below average fielder?  I thought I read his hands were pretty good, and SC fans always spoke highly of his defense.

If he's blocked in Houston, you would think it would be pretty easy to find someone out there willing to trade for a switch hitter projected to put up big power numbers.

not sure if they would take a guy looking to flip him a year later.  i think it was said earlier in this thread that smoak was a DH-type.

Juneberno.  I doubt they wasted a #10 on a guy who projects to be something different than what they are now.  I think he's a catcher and will stay at catcher and they hope his smarts will allow him to do well in that regard (defense).

The Bus Ride Discussion Forum / Re: 2008 Draft Thread
« on: June 05, 2008, 02:25:43 pm »
I expect the opposite.  Radio pundits think "catcher" and ask "what does he hit?".  They're going to like the Castro pick in that regard, although he's not a gap to gap hitter, more of a LoDuca type of hitter... high batting average potential, singles/doubles hitter... left handed, very level swing.

But the reason scouts say a decent "backup" catcher is because of "catching" or defense.  He's average.  Ahum... yeah, just like LoDuca.
could he possibly project to another position, like 3rd base?

Thank you.

Yeah, I watched last years Titans-Texans games with Austin bandwagon idiots who latch on to whatever winning team in Texas they can (ie Spurs, Cowboys, Longhorns) and it wasn't pretty so this is where I'm coming from with hating Vince. The worst part was seeing Texans Longhorn fans hopping on the Titans bandwagon right in my living room after VY's run (which was bullshit anyways cause NFL OT rules are retarded).
there will be some who you wont ever, ever be able to convince them that mario was a good pick over vy.  after this year, vy and mario will likely be tied in amount of probowls attended and super bowl rings won but vince fans will continue to wax poetic about his "it" and "all he does is win games."  if the tacks lose this weekend, they will be tied for last place just like the Texans.  mario has shown clear improvement while vince has, if not regressed, has gotten worse.  you hear people tear mario down for last year and they dont mention that he played through a painful foot injury, and not using said injury for any type of excuse.  but when vince doesnt do well its because he doesnt have enough weapons.  i thought sainthood enabled you to transcend that.

The draft that netted Williams and DeMeco Ryans.  Williams may not turn into the superstar they'd hoped, but he's a good player.  Ryans is too.  Bohls is an idiot.
...and owen daniels, eric winston, and charles spencer.  thats five starters opening day starters in 2006 (and all but spencer were/are starters in 2007).  daniels might make the pro bowl next year and winston is entrenched at RT for the next 8-10 years.  spencer would be the starting LT if dayne hadnt stepped on his foot at Indy last year.

give kubiak and rick smith credit for filling in holes with guys like will demps and andre davis and getting a starting CB in fred bennett in the 4th round this year.

the team will likely draft in the mid-teens in 2008 and should to grab a tackle or an RB such as johnathan stewart (oregon).

fyi--it was comical the other day how a caller in to 1560 measured tenn10 and mario on who has more potential down the road.  shouldnt potential  see gradual improvement year to year?  instead its "vy doesnt have enough offensive weapons."  i didnt hear any of that last year when people credited him with all those wins.

Talk Zone / Rockies offer Barmes for Burke
« on: December 04, 2007, 04:45:16 pm »
from rotoworld via denver post:
The Rockies have offered Clint Barmes to the Astros in exchange for Chris Burke, reports Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post.
In Barmes, the Astros would be getting a legitimate reserve shortstop, but they'd be leaving themselves with another light-hitting utilityman to go along with Geoff Blum. Considering that they won't be getting any power from their starting middle infielders, it'd be nice if they had one guy available on the bench occasionally capable of reaching the Crawford Boxes.

There's quite a bit of talent in that bullpen. No point in me taking a guess (I'd be wrong), but there are easily 4 guys who could help the Astros.
i was thinking the same thing and am looking at the pads bully now.  names that come to mind are cla meredith or heath bell, but bell is the setup man for hoffman IIRC.

334
BTW, mlbtraderumors reports that the Milwaukee Brewers asked about Chad Cordero of the Nats and they were asked to send back Rickie Weekes if they wanted Cordero.  Milwaukee said "NO" as loud as they could.

I wonder if the Brew Crew would be willing to send Weekes in a package deal for Nathan to outbid Houston.  This report of dealing with Houston may be just a floated rumor by the Twins to Rosenthal to see if they can get the Brewers to talk "Weekes" with them.
that blurb also said that weeks, corey hart, and hardy were untouchable just for a 9th inning type like cordero or nathan.

bourn- CF
matsui- 2B
berkman- 1B
kabong- LF
pence- RF
wigginton- 3B
towles- C
everett- SS

this has been rumored for awhile.  i think its a good deal for the Twins.  if the Santana rumors are true, they could get Garza's replacement from the NYY, LA of A, etc.

"The Twins and Tampa Bay Rays are close to finalizing a multi-player deal, according to several sources with knowledge of the discussions. The deal could be announced as soon as today.
The main pieces changning teams would be outfielder Delmon Young and righthander Matt Garza. But indications were strong on Wednesday that as many as six players could be involved.
In addition to Garza, the Twins would send Tampa Bay shortstop Jason Bartlett and reliever Juan Rincon for Young, shortstop Brendan Harris and outfielder Jason Pridie. Pridie was with the Twins during spring training of 2006 as a Rule 5 pick."

ever wonder what you'd do with a HOF vote?  here's what conlin did with his when the old man came up for induction.  some of you are probably already well aware of this.

"Ryan holds numerous big league records: 5,714 strikeouts, seven no-hitters, 12 one-hitters, 213 double-figure strikeout games and six 300-plus strikeout seasons.
Who could not vote for Ryan, who won 324 games? Bill Conlin, a columnist for the Philadelphia Daily News, for one.
Ryan also has 292 losses, a record 2,795 walks, only two 20-win seasons and never won a Cy Young Award, reasons enough for Conlin to omit Ryan from his ballot. Conlin, in the current issue of "Baseball Weekly," acknowledges that Ryan does deserve to be in the Hall, but not on the first ballot. Still, don't expect enough baseball writers to exclude Ryan or Brett in their first years and keep either out of the Hall."

quit tapping on your microphone.  just because people have tuned out 610 because of a bad, bad afternoon show doesnt mean they can't tune you out too.  your rants on towles and the astros inactivity are noted, but one only goes back to last year about this time when you were pining for Ben Zobrist to start in the middle IF for the home team.  love to hear you review how Zobrist on air has done the last year in the D-Rays organization, especially his stint in the big leagues this year, you know, before he was demoted.

and his response:
The point was that Zobrist at AA was ridiculous. Which it was. Minor league numbers are no guarantee of ML success, but opportunities
are supposed to be earned, and when earned, awarded. Especially when the major league team is not good.

WXYZ in DETROIT has better handle on the Astros situation that the local nutless worms,

Purpura had the chance to deal infielders Mark Loretta and Mike Lamb, but did not the pull the trigger on any deals. I don't blame Purpura for this one because he wasn't offered anything great in exchange for his veteran infielders. Both Lamb and Loretta are free agents after this season.

At least the ballclub didn't make a head-scratching move like it did before the trade deadline in 1998, when Freddie Garcia, Carlos Guillen and John Halama were sent to the Seattle Mariners for Randy Johnson. The Big Unit offered very little in his days as an Astro, while Garcia and Guillen emerged as top-notch players in the future.

Houston did pull some strings over the weekend by adding third baseman Ty Wigginton from the Tampa Bay Devil Rays for right-handed pitcher Dan Wheeler. Wigginton is a nice piece to the puzzle,
http://www.wxyz.com/sports/mlb/story.aspx?content_id=e5b748c2-bb84-4cbf-aaf6-542cf50d0697
do they mean that he offered very little as far as time he was an Astro, or his actual contributions?  10-1 with a 1.28 ERA and .98 WHIP are somewhat substantial to me.

they also asked about patton and towles, and if they might be called up before the year is up.  he said something about Pence in regards to the transition from AA to AAA, and their (patton/towles) performance would determine if they were called up or not.

Palilo Mad Libs!

If the Astros don't call up {person's name} by {date}, they clearly aren't serious about winning.  {First person} is hitting {a number between 200 and 400} at {Texas city name}, which they could really use.  No Hall of Famer has made the majors later than age {number more than 25}.  I just don't know what they're thinking!

Any Palilo claim to knowledge of prospects should be answered with ".207", which is Ben Zobrist's career slugging percentage.
exactly.  i prefer pallilo over any of the other talking Houston sports radio heads, but he REALLY beats the Towles idea into the ground.  he pats himself on the back like he was the only person calling for Pence to be in the lineup Opening Day.  not saying i wouldnt want Towles to cut his teeth in September, but Pallilo's Zobrist's pinings really have caused me to tune him out a little when goes on and on about it.

When the Braves were sold earlier this season there was some concern that they would stagnate because the new owners weren't going to spend money.  Concern was unfounded looks like.
i think this would signal that they wont attempt to resign Andruw Jones in the offseason, maybe looking to the trade route to acquire another OF.  i'd think their focus would be on getting Teixeira locked up, even though Boras wont allow Teixeira to sign anything long term before next offseason.

I could see Towles, but given he was an unexpected call-up to AA (where he has done well so far), I would be surprised to see him make the club out of ST next year, I would expect AAA.
is the spike in Towles production after his promotion to CC just an anomaly?  or is it that something he is just "trending" towards?  sure would be nice to have a great competition in ST next year, even with likelihood towles or gimenez starts the year at RR.

the coup de gras:
"...That brings us back to Biggio.
Is he going to get into the Hall of Fame? Probably. Should he? I don't think so.
Biggio has had a terrific 20-year career.
He has more than 400 career steals, has been an All-Star at catcher and second base and leads the National League with 52 leadoff homers. No right-handed batter has hit more doubles. And I'm sure Astros fans will find another 50 statistics that further illuminate his ability.
But I just don't think Biggio is a great player.
He has hit better than .300 only four times, none in the last eight seasons. While he has played in seven All-Star Games, he has only one 200-hit season, and he has never finished among the top three in the MVP voting.
Biggio is in the Hall of Very Very Good. There's no shame in that.
He's never been a dominant player like Ryne Sandberg was. The point is not to diminish Biggio's career, but when we're talking about greatness, we must split hairs.
We must make tough decisions to preserve the Hall of Fame's exclusivity...."

i think he was fined/suspended for throwing the ball, not the vulgarity.

it really appeared to me Qualls fired the ball almost out of stadium in a fit of anger, as evidenced by the 4 letter word he yelled after throwing the ball.  most players dont yell f-bombs when casually flipping a ball into the stands at the end of an inning.

Gettin' PERSONAL, aren't you.  7-21-1968

I may not always agree with you, but I don't make it personal.  Everyone calls you old man and jokes about your age.  It was not personal.

I don't know why you are so crabby lately, but I have done nothing to deserve being treated like this.

FYI-thanks for the PBP

where do you find the individual box scores?
check this:
http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/HOU/1962_lu.shtml
click on the date on the left and it should give the games individual box score.

Probably my favorite memory of DK was when he hit a home run in 1993 at a game I was at in the Dome--still one of my favorite Astros moments.  He went CG shutout also.

when did the word get out that vlad guerrero and jose guillen no longer had strong arms?

479
that's sneaky strong.

480
Bot 5 (is that all?):  Matthews c.o.c. to LF.  Kendrick nearly clipped by ball 2, later he smacks one to Lamb, 2 down.  Hillenbrand c.o.c to CF.  1st clean inning for Jennings.  Limey putting Shiner 98 on the endangered species list.  5-5.
think i'll go to the fridge and contribute to the cause

481
somebody figure this out for me:
"a pitcher appreciates an AL type game on a night like this, you get a chance to stick around"
Brownie in the 5th

482
well, at least Burke coming in for Scott strengthens our OF Defense

483
is this game being played in the Rocky Mtns?

484
Berkman hit by Colon's 0-2 pitch.  Bases loaded for Lee, 1 out.
comcast's signal is alot slower than TWC's.  you posted this 10-12 seconds before it happened.

485
Another baserunning gaffe.
yout still have runners on 2nd and 3rd with 1 out

486
awesome--AL West pitching staffs have been our bitch over the last 6 days.

another thing, what does haing av short stroke have to do with not needing enough starts to be a sharp pinch hitter?

487
That was a vise.
sorry--"i missed the automotive torture devices for $200" question on Jeopardy today.

488
Worse death--Hydraulic press or firestorm?
is that what made that guys eye pop out of socket in Casino when Joe Pesci was torturing him?

489
...and I think they only 3 of those "your watching Houston Astros baseball on FSN Houston" clips that they rotate through of Scott, Biggio, and Everett.  yet we get Rangers ads on Astros telecasts--brilliant.

Hogs coach Van Horn thinks Eibner will go to Arkansas rather than sign.

"Right now I think it's 60-40 we get him."
60-40 doesnt sound extremely confident, what is eibner wanting in terms of signing money?
do the Astros have an out of Torrence hurts himself at OSU?

Ground ball to short.  Loretta bobbled the pickup slightly, they got the runner at 2nd, Biggio's relay to 1st was late and they just got one.
that one just scored on a sac fly to make it 9-8

i was hoping for a 5-3/6-2 roadie but this was probably one of the ones i thought would be tough to get.  to get their best pitcher out before the end of the 5th inning is really good news.
