Fox 26 says Astros officially for sale

I suppose this means the front office will be tight with the payroll until any agreement is reached, not that I expected them to do much in free agency anyway.

didn't he have a hard time selling the team for $500-600 million?  I am interested to see how the franchise became that much more lucrative in the past year.

@davidnuno: I had an email exchange with Mark Cuban, where he said he was not interested in buying the Astros.

Feelings are completely mixed on a potential sale. But this helps.

i still don't think he is getting $800 million, even with comcast on board.  forbes had the franchise deemed to be worth around $450 million seven months ago.  i don't see how it adds $350 million to the price, but i could be wrong.

the best news ever.

and the price says to me that the team is for sale but drayton's not going to give it away.  ie. not the Rangers.

Oh, I think the recent increase in sale price for the Rangers has Uncle D. convinced the Astros are worth even more, plus the RSN, and you have your answer.  Is it reasonable?  Probably not.  But neither was paying 580mil for the Rangers.

Agree 100%.  Last time anyone got close to that, there were reports of shenanigans (last strike, I believe).  Anyway, he has to have a reason for asking that much.  Time will tell if he can get it.

The books he shows prospective buyers, presumably backed by warranties in the sale agreement, will likely contain fewer shenanigans than those that were opened up during the strike. Unless he wants to get sued.

Agreed.  But unlike the Rangers and Cubs, it's going to be difficult for Drayton to "wash" the Astros through Chapter 11 to protect the new owner from "unforeseen" liabilities.  Due diligence is going to be much, much more stringent as a result.

Well, after Arky and Limey's updates, the only addition I have is that this just made the Void a little more interesting.  I sure as hell don't want to spend the void arguing about application of baseball statistics!

Perhaps this is the pre-Black Friday mark up so he can then show it being available for 30% off.  My wife is already calculating where she needs to be in line to have a shot.

Santa, can the new owner:
1. Bring lots and lots of money but even more in baseball savvy?
2. Restore the original colors and uniform design?
3. Remove Tal's Hill and Tal, if neccessary?
4. Have Pam Gardner and her trunk of dominatrix gear thrown on the street by noon of the sales date?
5. Blow up that ridiculous goddamn choo-choo train?  If possible, on opening day?
6. Round up all of the Houston area Mormon missionaries and their warm smiles and eagerness to please and all that shit and employ them in the food and beverage venues instead of the current "service" staff.  Also, serve actual food.
7. Shut off the godawful music and "make noise" devices.  Get a decent organ player.  And, a monkey trained to fling shit at Cubs fans.
8. Employ a plane to fly over the Dell Diamond with a trailing banner of "Enjoy Your Arena Ball, Fuckheads" or similar themes.
9. Permanently cease Nolan Ryan promotional items.
10. Dip cups to the first 10,000 patrons.
11. Un-retire every number except 5 and 7.

Sounds like he's pretty serious about it.

Drayton McLane announced Friday that he plans to "change and move forward."

"Our family has loved being involved with the Houston Astros," a nostalgic McLane said at a press conference at Minute Maid Park.

My best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with the girl who saw Drayton put the team up for sale last night. I guess it's pretty serious.

It's no wonder McLane keeps Milo around.  Compared to McLane, Milo is a vibrant and entertaining voice.  I wanted to snap my slap him upside the head and tell him to get to the friggin point.

I'm actually kind of worried.  Drayton has his shortcomings, but it could be a lot, lot worse.  I'll keep my fingers crossed.  The odds of a wily baseball purist who can tick off items on Taras's list purchasing the team is far less than a marketing-focused ass clown buying the club, just given the general wily baseball purist to marketing-focused ass clown ratio among those with hundreds of millions of dollars.

Yeah.

Just because Drayton sells the team, it doesn't necessarily mean that the new owner is going to be David Glass or worse.

Drayton is the best owner the Astros have ever had.  Much of their success from 1994-today can be attributed to him.  That doesn't mean a new owner couldn't be even better.

Drayton has a demonstrable track record that he will open his wallet when the competitive need has been paramount.  Any potential new owner is unknown territory.

Keep in mind, while still not in favor of the baseball purists, the fact that Mark Cuban took himself out the running shifted the odds dramatically.  See, he has what is called the d-bag amplifier effect.  The sheer magnitude of his d-bag qualities quadruples his statistical weight in assessing the marketing focused ass clown portion of this analysis.  I can show you the numbers if you wish, but I assume this in intuitive to 97% of the population (excluding the top 3%-ers like you know who, who probably thinks Cuban would be a great owner, and would surely be open to his statistical analysis unlike other so-called "professionals").

It means no one has said "here's my latest checking account statement...notice the balance shows 10 figures *before* the decimal point..."

Overview of the process to date:

Step 1 - Owner indicates interest in selling to investment banks
Step 2 - Investment banks all pitch for the opportunity to sell the firm.  Presentation with figures that induce the largest erection from the owner often wins.
Step 3 - Boner-inducing investment bank puts together "teaser" (Think victoria secret catalog level of sexiness) on the opportunity to blast to "potentially interested parties" (i.e. anyone that can afford to be involved or form a group that can afford).
Step 4 - Investment banking group promises to "open the books" to interested parties ("take it all off") as long as the parties promise not to tell anyone (sign an NDA).
Step 5 - Some of the "interested parties" will sign an NDA just to get the opportunity to stare at her tits and a couple might genuinely want to fuck her.

That's where the team is right now.  Probably the "20-25 interested parties" is comprised of a group of people that only want to stare at her tits for a while with a couple fuckworthy parties sprinkled in.

A nice run down from a guy who's been involved in M&A as well.  However, you forgot to mention that the IBs also sprinkle in some Viagra or other medicine to make said boner look bigger than it actually is...  Or that the IB is probably telling the various "interested parties" that she's an easier lay than she lets on
