Aramis Ramirez traded by the Pittsburgh Pirates with Kenny Lofton and cash to the Chicago Cubs for a player to be named later, Jose Hernandez, and Matt Bruback (minors). The Chicago Cubs sent Bobby Hill (August 15, 2003) to the Pittsburgh Pirates to complete the trade.

The one the Cubs made lately when they took Josh Hamilton in the Rule 5 and basically gave him to Cincinnati and now are turning over every rock looking for a left handed hitting outfielder wasn't exactly the best deal they ever made.

sold him for $100K and then the Reds acquired Volquez for him.  now they are on the hook for another 3 years of fukudome.

the "other player" was exactly what the Red Sox needed at the time. no way to expect that Bagwell would do what he did. it was not a bad trade at the time but, of course, turned out lopsided.

I think I read somewhere once that the Astros initially asked for Scott Cooper, but were turned down.

Curt Blefary for Mike Cueller was a pretty big flop. Thanks, Spec.

The Expos trading the Unit to the Mariners for Mark Langston was not good.  Cincinnati sending Frank Robinson to the Orioles for Milt Pappas was foolish.  Lou Brock for Ernie Broglio didn't work too well for the cubbies.  Scott Kazmir for Victor Zambrano is one no one ever understood.  My favorite really dumb trade was SF trading George Foster to the Reds for Frank Duffy and Vern Geishert.

i thought pittsaburgh's two trades last year made a valiant effort to set a modern low- you have a franchise that is now a complete hoax upon the game and should be folded or moved to a real city like portland or san antonio. i didn't really understand how great a baseball player xavier nady was- when he put on the yankees uniform everyone went "wow" and realized he'd be their left fielder for the next 8 years. and for boston to salvage jason bay out of the manny ramirez situation?

It wasn't necessarily a bad trade, but I use every trade thread to mention that my favorite trade of all time is the one that involved Pat Jarvis, Ken Tatum, and Jarvis Tatum.

The Steve Finley, Curt Schilling, and Pete Harnisch for Glenn Davis trade was a bad one.  Too bad Curt was long gone from Houston when he had his "come to Jesus" discussion with Clemens.

Pete Harnisch.  Wow.

The Astros got Mark Portugal in offseason 1988 from Minnesota in exchange for a PTBNL who turned out to be someone named Todd McClure.  Portrugal wasn't an All-Star or anything, but a good and serviceable pitcher for several years.  Giant killah.

I'm still ticked off about blefary for cuellar
Remember Jesus Alou being called out of the 1st base coaching box to pinch-hit a double vs. the Reds in '79 I think, to win a crucial game, and he patted Morgan on top of the head (ala Benny Hill w/the little bald guy) and Little Joe got pissed.....yeah,that was great.

Trading John Mayberry to the Royals at the winter meetings in '71 was really lame.  Jim York and Lance Clemons.  Another nice move by Spec.

Pete Harnisch.  Wow.

Now that's one crazy dude (crazy in a ha-ha sort of way).  I still remember the stories my sister would tell me about him when she worked for the Astros during the strike year.  Mentality of a 10 year old and the sense of humor to match.

Harnisch was a crazy dude? He always seemed like a pretty determined competitor to me. What sort of stories (if they can be shared)?

Harnisch was a crazy dude? He always seemed like a pretty determined competitor to me. What sort of stories (if they can be shared)?

It was mainly just little things that made people laugh.  Plus, since my sister was one of the few women that was around the club house (she ran media and game notes around among other things and set up player interviews) she was a particular target.  Whenever he came across her talking to a group of people he'd run up to her and either introduce himself as her fiance or ask her when she was going to accept his proposal.  Other things...

1) He was certain that the miniature blimp they had in the Dome was full of candy and he threw baseballs at it to see if he could break it open pinata style.

2) Scott Servais one took a fastball off his cup and while he was in the training room moaning in pain Pete pulled my sister in yelling, "Dude, look at Scott's nads!  They're all black and blue!"

3) Pete and Luis Gonzalez (a frequent target of his) were once eating a bag of mini Tootsie Rolls they had taken from the buffet spread and he said that they "Looked like little dookies" which caused Luis to start laughing and spew brown Tootsie Roll saliva everywhere.

There also a story (possibly true, possibly not) that Luis and Pete were on the road and got into an argument over what to watch on TV in their hotel room.  It ended up with Pete dangling Luis over the balcony rail (not all the way like on TV, but enough) and yelling that they were going to watch whatever it was (possibly Cartoon Network) and Luis crying and yelling at him to pull him back up.

That's just the stuff my sister thought was safe to tell me at the time.  From what I hear, he was a riot to be around.

Montreal gave Cliff Lee, Brandon Phillips, Lee Stevens, and Grady Sizemore, to Cleveland for 10 starts by Bartolo Colon and 24 innings of relief by Tim Drew. To Montreal's credit, they were able to flip Colon for Rocky Biddle.
