New closer available?
« on: November 29, 2007, 12:26:23 am »
ESPN (I know it's probably wrong) is reporting that if the Twins are successful in trading Johan that they will then put Joe Nathan on the market for more prospects. According to them nathan will also be a FA at the end of 08. Nathan's pretty reliable. Wonder what he would cost?

He's one of the best closers in the game at this moment, top 5 IMO.. something tells me he'd cost a whole lot.
Today seems like a good day to burn a bridge or two

Oh.  Yeah.  Dude is getting top dollar.  If Wade is looking to spend, he'd be solid.

i'd think another year of inflation puts nathan at or above the cordero deal with the reds.  he will turn 34 after next season but boasts a stellar performance as the Twins closer the last few years.   a four-year-deal ending when said closer will be 37, i think i'd pass.

Twins traded right-hander Matt Garza on Wednesday in a six-player trade that fetched outfielder Delmon Young from Tampa Bay.

Twins also sent starting shortstop Jason Bartlett and bullpen prospect Eduardo Morlan to the Rays. Minnesota also acquired middle infielder Brendan Harris and minor league outfielder Jason Pridie.

Shrewd trade on both sides.

The Twins are reportedly looking for help at 3d and CF, although I've read the Pridie might be an option in CF.   There's also the reports of shopping Santana and, spotted by delirious Astros fans, their closer Nathan.  The Twins are not doing this as salary dumps, they want something back.   The Twins lost Hunter, but they offered him 3 years at 15 per.  The Dodgers went 5.  They've offered Santana 20 million a year for 4 years.  That would be more than any other pitcher makes per year.  But he wants a minimum of 6 years.  The upshot for the Astros is this, they're not going to get Nathan for cheap, and they may not even have the talent to enter the bidding.

so, are you saying that Scott and Burke won't be enough?
Often wrong, but never in doubt.

And Drayton's too damn cheap to throw in enough cash.

They might.  But they'll only be playing part time with the Twins.  They'll have to share them with the team the Astros are going to trade with for a #2 starter.

The Twins missing out on Hunter at 15 mill per will at some point be a blessing. Probably sooner than later.
