Postolos??
« on: April 14, 2011, 09:53:53 am »
Astros County linked to an article by Ringolsby http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/Slow-start-for-Boston-Red-Sox-does-not-bode-well-for-season-041311

In the article, it implies that if Crane gets the team, then George Postolos will take Tal's spot as president.  Says Postolos was president of the Rockets at some point.  Any observations on this guy?  Did he seem capable with the Rockets?

Judging from this article, he'd be more likely to be helping Crane purchase the team.  If he were to come in, I'd see him more in a Pam Gardner role than a Tal Smith role.

Your assumption makes more sense.  When I did my half-ass google serach on him, most of the stuff portrayed him as a money guy.  Doesn't square with a replacement for Tal.  I couldn't find much on his tenure with the Rockets.  Specifically, whether he was a Gardner or Smith type with the Rockets.

He can pitch?

Says Crane is infatuated with getting Friedman (from the Rays) for his GM.

I don't know about that, but he at least prefers playing the game with natural wood and not any of that college-level aluminum crap Pam prefers.

I wouldn't object to that.

Unless it means trading Bourn or Lopez or some other valuable piece to get him. I'm not a big fan of trading real baseball players for a manager or GM type. Remember the Rays had to give up a young Randy Winn (then one of their best players) to the Mariners so they could have Piniella? And, I believe the Red Sox were going to give the A's Youkilis or some nice prospect back before Billy Beane changed his mind and decided to stay in Oakland.

I wouldn't object to that.

I know Friedman's dad pretty well.  The son was connected to the ownership group who purchased the Rays somehow, but I don't remember the whole story.  I didn't think he had much connection to baseball, other than as a fan, before he took the Rays job.  I've kinda thought for no reason and no basis in fact that that was how Hunsicker got there.  He is a Houston guy, and I'm sure he's a smart guy.

For Friedman, wikipedia said he played a little college ball at Tulane, like his father IIRC.  He was a wall street guy: buddy of the guy who knew the guy who purchased the Rays.  Did say he was a Houston native.

postolos was COO of the rockets when they successfully secured the bond issue with Houston voters to have Toyota Center built.  i believe he left the Rockets to join a group that tried to buy the Charlotte Bobcats in 2006.

he tried to buy the Pistons also:

a decent bio, albeit nine years old.
