She's not unbiased.  She gets her paycheck from the Astros.

I think MLB Advanced Media signs her checks.  I accept the disclaimer that her stories are not reviewed or approved by the Houston Astros.  Anybody that has read her work for any length of time can see she is not a Astros shill, she has never had a problem calling shitty baseball...shitty baseball, wherever the shit originates.

It wouldn't surprise me if CJM had plenty of Texas suitors. He was one of a very rare breed: a double sport player (baseball and football) at a major university.

Just catching up here...been out of town for a bit.

If my friend, Bucky Richardson had not committed to A&M, I might have been a Aggie.  Both of us had narrowed it down to LSU and A&M and we had pretty much decided not to go to the same school so we wouldn't have to compete against each other for playing time over our whole careers.  He choose A&M first so it made my decision easy...I was leaning towards LSU because of some alumni in the family anyway.

Not a big fan of your Tigers...the way they poach Texas talent in College Football makes me root against all of their sports teams.  On the flip-side, if a Louisiana kid has the audacity to NOT go to LSU then he is labled a traitor, yet they have Texas players all over their friggin roster.  Sorry to include "smack" in the thread (especially since the content has NOTHING to do with the baseball team)...seems to be a slow morning.

You mean a out of state D-1 football program has been recruiting Texas High School athletes?  When did this start??

Whoops I meant to write that the umpire should step up a little for a better view of the low pitch instead of stepping back a little.

Speaking as someone that has done some baseball umpiring... You HAVE to set up with the catcher. You can't just set up in the strike zone and say "the hell with where the catcher sets up" because the catcher himself will be blocking your view of a pretty signifigant part of the plate if you do so.

Actually this is incorrect.  My neighbor who is a umpire (professional) says that at the pro schools, NCAA clinics, TASO training, etc. The home plate ump is taught to position himself in what is known as "the slot"...this is where you set up on the inside edge of the plate (inside for the hitter, right side for a lefty, left side for right hander).  Your nose should be in line with that side of the plate.  If the catcher sets up for a inside pitch the umpire adjusts by raising up a little to look over the catcher and if needed stepping back a little to get a better view of the low pitch.  He also added that over time it has been found that "the slot"  is a much safer position because you are less apt to be hit by foul balls.  picture of ump in the slot-http://www.umpire.org/mechanics/signals/ballbox.jpg

I found this online, but my friend says that in the minor leagues they make all umpires work from the slot, but some of the MLB umps that have been around a long time do what ever they want...

Quote
Historically there were two schools of thought: what was called the American League School favored the umpire to stand in a wrestler, box or straddle stance directly behind the middle of the plate. AL umpires used outside chest protectors. The pad proves to be too bulky to work anywhere else but directly down the pipe. The AL stance is therefore slightly high and often the bottom of the strike zone will get cut off by the catcher's movement. This position afforded excellent view of the corners of the plate and top of the strike zone at all times.

The National League School umpire used an inside chest protector. These umpires were free to work the slot, best described as taking a position with your eyes centered down the side of the plate that the batter is standing on. In the slot you are able to work in quite close to the catcher, get lower in the zone, and see every part of the plate and strike zone. This position requires you to learn where the outside corners are in order to call them correctly (a skill that must be practiced regularly.) The NL stance also permits you to work in closer to the plate. Many umpires move so that their mask is actually over the catcher's back or even tighter, their shoulder. Getting too close in an invitation for an interference penalty. too far back and you will not see the plate.

There is nothing stopping an NL or slot-style umpire from taking a position in the center of the plate like an AL style umpire would. For the umpire using the outside protector attempts to use the slot will lead to many times when clear sight of the plate and strike zone is restricted. An interesting point to not here is that some umpires are very relaxed about your selection of position, some are adamant. For many umpires it is slot, and slot-only; for others it is over the catcher and that position only.

Since nobody really wears outside protectors anymore, the slot is the only position that is now taught.

CJM:

Thanks for reminding me of your play as well. I was never more prooud of my baseball team than when you all won that 1991 national championship. It was vindication for all of the years of being treated like a half-ass minor sport with no support. At first, all the fan following pissed me off, like "why didn't you frontrunners come support us like that?" But then I realized that feeling was all about me, so it subsided. I then felt as much a part of the team as I did when I actually was.

This weekend has me in a melancholy way concerning the Box as it hosts its last SEC series, especially against the ageless Ron Polk, who used to kick our asses with regularity. He's retiring too. All the fun that we had in that place. All the pranks. All the goofing off. All the shagging balls and shooting the shit. All the rain delays, which were some of the funnest times in the park. And then all the winning that Skip brought in to the park, courtesy of guys like you CJM (who I voted for on the All Omaha Team) that was named after an LSU ballplayer WWII hero. What a continuing tribute that the new yard will continue to be "Alex Box Stadium."

Wow, thank you for that.  There were so many great players during that era, I feel honored to just be on the ballot.  I really can't believe it's almost over for the old girl.  What a great park to play in and the atmosphere was electric even for a mid-week game against Centenary College.  I grew up hearing stories about Alex Box Stadium since my Grandfather, Father, and two Uncles had played there but I remember the first time I played there in American Legion ball (I think it's a shame they don't play legion games there anymore)...I knew then that one day I would be on that field as a LSU Tiger.

I think that all of us that had the privilege to play there with a LSU uniform on our backs were blessed to have a home ballpark like Alex Box.  It doesn't matter if there were 4000 fans or 40...it was a great place to play college baseball.

Talk Zone / Re: The Shift ... Mind Games?
« on: May 07, 2008, 12:14:07 am »
With the talk tonight about Washington's shift on Berkman which seemed counter-intuitive, I wondered if managers ever call for the shift simply to get into a hitter's head, especially one who is in the zone like Lance seems to be.  I've got to believe the hitter looks at the open field and at least momentarily considers trying to place one there.   Coach?

I can't speak for Jim, but I can say that for me it wouldn't affect my at bat.  Unless the situation called for something different (moving a runner, etc), I always went to the plate with the idea of hitting the ball hard where it was pitched.  I can't imagine something like that being able to interfere with professional hitter's concentration, but that's just my opinion.

Great story.  Your details made me feel like I was there even though it was two years before my birth.  I have often tried (without success) to explain thoughts and feelings that went on during a big game to somebody that wasn't there, you were able to do that for all of us readers, and for that I am grateful.  I am amazed that I am not alone in having odd memories from a big game...I can remember every pitch of certain at bats (can even close my eyes and still see some of the pitches as they leave the pitchers hand...rotation, seams, even the sound of some that went right by me) , but other at bats are like they never happened...same with plays in the field.  I was lucky enough to make the final play at third base in the CWS when we won one of our National Championships...to this day my only real memory of that play comes from the video replays I have seen.  Weird

Thanks Jim!

Talk Zone / Re: MLB agrees, Spilborghs dropped the ball, so did umps
« on: April 22, 2008, 03:26:09 pm »
This is eggszactly how Reed's crew rotated.  The third base ump went to second in case of a close play/throw to second base, the first base umpire had his eyes trained on first base and the home plate umpire rotated to third while Wegner ran straight out to medium deep CF.  Here is the problem with that rotation:  The ball was tailing away from CF towards RF and the only way a catch could be made was running hard towards Right Center Field.  What was Wegner doing staying put at medium deep CF when the ball was tailing.  A few feet to his right, he sees the play cleanly.  IOW - don't run to a spot, position yourself to make a call for goodness sake.  The flight of the ball should've immediately told him that he's going to be out of position in case the ball is dropped, which turned out to be true.  If you see the replay, Wegner actually makes an attempt at the last minute to move several feet towards right field, but by the time he's re situated himself, Spillborgh is in full slide and raising his arm with the ball in hand.

He admitted to Coop that is what happened.  What made it worse was that the rotation the umpires made was one that made watching the play develop impossible for others, so no help was forthcoming.  So to tell Coop that he (Wegner) was going to confirm with the entire crew was a hollow promise and one that would get me mad too.  If they're in no position to help and you're not sure and admit you're out of position, why in the heck are you making an out call?  And if you're the crew chief and you know all this, why do you toss Cooper because he's telling you and your crew that in this one particular play, four blind mice could've done better because the play should dictate your position, not some set rule about where you should run.

It's actually worse to tell me that they have a set place to run instead of watching the play develop and getting into the *best* positon possible to make a call.  Again, I point to Berkman's slide last night.  The home plate umpire positioned himself perfectly to make a call.  In the game in Philly, the home plate umpire positioned himself behind the play shielding himself from the tag, so he went on his best knowledge of who arrived first, the runner or the ball.  It put a play in doubt in my mind because the umpire called the runner safe (and he may have been, I dunno for sure) but did not leave me thinking the umpire had the best view of the play.  All you can ask an umpire is for their best position on a play, anything else is call for some arguments.

I don't remember the direction the ball came from in Philly, but I know the HP ump positions himself in relation to location of the throw to the plate.

Indulge me for a moment- As far as help in the play the other night, what would have happened if the 1st base ump had decided that he should watch the catch as well and helps the 2nd base ump make a "no catch" call.  The the defense wants to appeal that Blum never touched 1st base...nobody was watching because the 1st base ump didn't do what he was supposed to do so Blum is ruled safe because the umpire can't call something he doesn't see.  Then we have replays showing that Blum obviously never touched 1st and we have a similar situation now it's the Rockies that got screwed.

I think for the most part the umpires are well trained and do a good job.  That's not to say that MLB doesn't "baby" them too much...for one not allowing a instant replay of a close call in the ballpark is bullshit, IMO.

Talk Zone / Re: MLB agrees, Spilborghs dropped the ball, so did umps
« on: April 22, 2008, 02:31:31 pm »
...

What was odd to me was where was the first base umpire on the play?  Was he positioning himself to look at Blum run the bases (making sure he touches first base) thus taking himself entirely out of the play in the outfield?  Usually the home plate umpire is running up the line to help with the runner if he knows the first or second base umpire needs to run out to the outfield to make a call.  In this case, it looks like the first base umpire and home plate umpire muffed their chance to help the second base blue who got caught in no mans land when it came to making the correct call.  A few feet to the right for the second base umpire or a first base umpire running out to help make the call would've solved the problem for the umpires.

...

From a good friend of mine who is a AA umpire now filling in at AAA: When the 2nd base ump goes out to make a call (he is responsible for the "V" in the outfield which is pretty much RCF over to LCF), the 3rd base umpire takes 2nd base, the plate umpire rotates up to 3rd base, and the 1st base umpire will come inside to watch the "touch up" at first, then he will rotate down to home plate if the runner continues on to second.  He said it would have been almost impossible for the 2nd base ump to get a better angle on that particular play because they are taught to go pretty much straight out towards the play for a close catch/no catch call.  All standard 3-man and 4-man rotations are in a clockwise fashion now, 8-10 year ago this used to be "crew" specific..some crews would do it one way, other would do it another way.  This was causing somewhat of a learning curve for AAA umpires coming up to MLB, now they all do it the same way.

I'm serious, you were a really good hitter. No, my first year was 78, so I missed Mainieri too, but I played against him after Paul transferred to UNO.

I appreciate that...I wish I would have just concentrated on baseball only and not messed with football.  I think that really hurt me as a individual player, although I wouldn't trade the rings for any individual honor.

Are you still active within the program?  Living in Texas now makes it hard for me to really keep up much.  I really don't know if they are headed in the right direction yet...but then again, I can only go by what I read online.  Still hard to imagine LSU baseball without Skip and "Cano".

I played for the Tigers too, but in the BB (before Bertman) era. I played for Jim Smith and Jack Lamabe. In 78, we were the worst team in the SEC, with a 12-34 record if my feeble memory is accurate. The coach got fired. We really weren't very good.

BTW, I watched you play a lot. We met a few times. You were a helluva player.

I was real active in traveling with the 91 club. What a magical season. From getting swept in the cold at Kentucky (that baseball powerhouse) to losing 2 out of 3 to a young Rod Delmonico team to the top of the mountain at Omaha. Unbelievable.

Thanks for the compliment...did you play in '75 as well?  My uncle Pat pitched back then (I think 75 was his last year).

Speaking of outside...I'm thinking about getting a flat panel LCD tv for outside on my covered patio.  I currently have a regular CRT TV out there now, that has been out there for almost 8 years.  I've been shocked at how long it's lasted, but it's been up there, in the heat and humidity, cold and rain, fog and smog and it's never had a problem.  So my question is, would an LCD have any particular issues related to weather that you wouldn't also find in a regular CRT TV?  If it would last 8 years out there, I'd glady fork over the cayshe.

Have you seen these?  http://www.backyardstuff.com/Games%20&%20Fun/outdoor_tv.htm

They have a few places that sell "outdoor" LCDs...  more money, but maybe worth it.

Why not pitch Sampson on 5 day's rest on Monday?  Why does Garner feel the need to hold him 6 days?

I would think it's to give his leg a little more time to rest.  I'm sure the 610AM callers will tell you it's because Garner is a idiot.

Also for someone not signed to a contract it is kind of nice for him to pitch BP Monday and Tuesday at the prospect camp. I would in addition to pitching BP he may have passed on some tips, advice, or assisted somew of the Astros prospects. ..It be nice if he chose a eam or made a decision of what he is going to do. If he wants to win the Yankees would be a good choice for wins(also a good choice for money), The Astros have a lot of question marks..I'm sure last season was a disappointment to the team goes from going to the World Series to their worse season since 2000. They were in a weak division thats why they were in the mix, their record 15 games behind the Yanks and Mets, 14 behind the Twins, 13 behind the Tigers, 11 behind the A's, 1.5 behind the Cards, 6 behind the Padres and Dodgers.

I would say the reason he's there has more to do with feeling obligated than him being "nice" (plus it's great PR for him).  He is locked in with the Astros for 10 years after he retires, and the article on astros.com implies that's the only reason he will be with the Astros in Spring Training.

I thought the PS contract didn't start until he was retired, but I'm sure Mr. Bryan Hoch is better informed.

As is typical, the Astros sign/purchase a number of players out of the indy leagues every year. About half never even see a roster, getting their release at the end of spring training.

The 28-year old (not 27) Maldonado is at least the 3rd indy league player purchased this offseason, which includes former Astro Todd Self (who finished last year with Shreveport of the American Association). Maldonado lasted three years in the Giants' organization after being drafted in the 9th round in 2000. He's spent the last 4 years in the indy leagues and up until last season his numbers were all pretty crummy.

If Maldonado does make it out of spring training, then as Jacksonian says he probably becomes a spare part for CC.

I didn't hear about Self.  I wonder if all of the people that called into talk radio when the Astros released Self are happy now.

I have an HD DVR from Time Warner.  I've never filled it, even though the HD shows must be huge files to store.  It does default to auto-erase a recording after 14 days which helps keep things a little cleaner, but you can change that to a shorter erase time, longer or never (customisable per show).

I had shit-loads of HD soccer matches on there during the World Cup, and it never complained.

I've filled mine up before.  The latest DVR from Time Warner has a 160 GB hard drive.  That equates to 80 hours of standard definition programming, or up to 20 hours of HD programming.  If you get behind a few weeks of your weekly HD network programming and then record a few movies and sporting events, it can fill up.

The eSATA connection on the back of the TWC HD DVR is also active.  You need a external SATA drive with a SATA to eSATA cable (I got all of this from Fry's).  I added a 300 GB  external drive to mine, and I now have all kinds of space (I still have 46 (all HD prime-time shows) 1 hour shows that are still waiting to be watched, and it's only showing 88% full).  You have to connect the external drive before plugging the DVR in.  When it boots it will format the external drive and use the extra space (takes about 10 minutes).  The drive will only work with the DVR that was used to format it.  AVS Forum The Link has plenty of information about this and more- go to the HD section in the forums.

For this time of year, a team might leave itself with a little more flexibility to sign FAs and claim Rule 5 players.

Maybe they could, but 37 is nowhere close to being a high number at this time of year.  Just looking in alphabetical order at the first 4 teams I see the Angels have 39, the A's have 37, the Blue Jays have 37, and the Braves have 39 players on their 40 man roster.

There's a high-def TNT channel.  I'd bet they put 'em on there.

That would be my guess too.  Sort of like Universal HD showing The US Open in HD on Thursday and Friday while it was being shown in SD on USA network.  Either that, or it could be a excuse for TBS to come out with a HD station similar to their sister station TNT.  Baseball playoff games in HD could be a good way to pressure cable systems to add your new HD channel to their lineups (although TWC still hasn't added ESPN2-HD or NFL Network).

I know that last season in Houston, KNWS (OTA Station) was allowed to show the Astros playoff games from ESPN.  I don't know if the same thing will be done with TBS, but if so that will at least make sure fans in a local team's market are able to watch the playoff games without needing to subscribe to cable.

you do realize that if huff had gotten a mere four more hits - seeing-eye singles, infield bleeders, whatever - that he would have "outperformed" ensberg in that category? and you think of all the times huff hit the ball really, really, really hard this year....

but screw all that - huff's career OPS is .819. as an astro, his OPS was .819. he was AS ADVERTISED, and performed well, imo. his astro-only pace would have yieled 35 hr's 102 rsbi over the course of a full, 604-ab season, which is how many he averaged the three previous years.

i would welcome huff back with open arms for a) the right price; b) assuming we add a better bat in addition to his. as your third or 4th best offensive player, he's great. as your second-best offensive player....

he's also LH and plays at least 3 positions decently. and unlike ensberg, stays healthy. a lefty bat is big. no guarantee on scott; no guarantee on lamb (who i would try to deal for arms... or an arm).

I wouldn't trade Lamb unless it was a "Tony Soprano" type offer.

Wilson had 4 more RBI than Lane (19-15) over the last 2 months of the season (August, September). Lane had 60 ABs while Wilson had 115 over that same time.  Now that doesn't account for the fact that Wilson did hit lead-off for 39 of those ABs.

You have to do whatever you can to win your next game, I'll take Oswalt over Albers in  that situation.  You go with Roy even if the Pirates announced they were going to have Burnitz pitch, and he was going to go all 9.

I don't know if Lamb could have hit it out even if they had laid one in right down the middle, but he was going to put the bat on the ball.

I'm guessing a lot of your modern-day hitting stars don't make that adjustment.

I heard Lamb in a post-game interview and he talked about the first two fastballs were thrown right by him so he figured his best chance was to look for something off-speed to hit.

Biggio will already be tired from last night and the travel, and the road has not been his friend.

Willy can try to put some bunts down the line and make Howard stretch a little...maybe enough to pull a groin or something.

Less than 100 AB (most of those in the pinch) isn't much when you're talking about batting average.  Just a little less than 2 more hits per month and he would have a .300+ BA.  The fact that his K's per AB (and his # of pitches per PA) are still in line with what it looks like he has done in the past seem to show he's still giving the club good ABs and putting the bat on the ball.

HD cameras are, of course, different.  I thought the original comment/question was on the subject of whether they use two sets of cameras, one HD one regular, for these broadcasts.  The answer is no, they use only HD cameras but these boys also kick out a regular feed in parallel with the HD feed.

Presumably Fox has a limited number of sets of HD cameras (or maybe only one set) which would explain why not every game is in HD.

It's actually the lack of a HD production truck that keeps us from getting every game in HD.  MMP is set up for HD all the time (the HD cams, fiber, etc stay there), the HD production trucks on the other hand have to be scheduled for a event (as I understand it).  I have heard that FSN wants have all a all HD simulcast in place no later than 2008 for the major regional sports they carry (baseball, basketball).  The list of teams that have more games in HD than the Astros is long (the Pirate fans, for example will get 3 times as many games in HD then we do this season), there are a few that will end up with 100+ games in HD this year.

If they use the same camera, you get the same field of vision.  They may stretch the picture to fit a different aspect ratio, but it's the same field of vision as a regular screen.  You dont' get any more inches in HD, despite what you tell your wife.

They crop the picture for regular 4x3 TV's, there is no stretching for a true 16x9 picture.

Phil Garner opted to sacrifice offense for defense at shortstop, but somehow Taveras' solid offense wasn't deemed strong enough to keep his strong defense on the field as Chris Burke got hot in late May.

Although Garner consistently said Taveras hadn't done anything wrong, sitting on the bench didn't feel any better for Taveras. Outsiders also scratched their heads...

But it wasn't until Burke played his way out of the lineup that Taveras got the chance to showcase his skills on a consistent basis again.

Taveras is even creating havoc these days with his legs. He didn't run as much while he hit second earlier in the year, because Garner didn't want opponents to see first base open and walk the team's one consistent power threat, Lance Berkman.

This article kind of makes Taveras look like a whiney bitch to me.  I wonder how much of that is Ortiz's fault?

Quote:

...Although the offense has continued to struggle since hitting coach Gary Gaetti was fired July 12, there's no doubt Taveras has benefited from his new old hitting coach.

"After Gaetti left and the new coach started working with me, it became easier," Taveras said. "(Berry) was with me in Double-A and it became easier. Gaetti never worked with me. We never went to the cages.

"Maybe he didn't want to change anything, and he never worked with me. I don't know if they told him not to help me. He didn't work with me."...

Since their great start in April the Astros have been one of the worst teams in baseball.  While it takes a lot of turds to make a proper cesspool, Lidge's performance this year has been exceptionally foul.  When Lidge was getting saves (albeit pretty shaky ones) early in the season the Astros were winning. Since he became the anti- Red Adair they have been losing. I know Lidge is not out there forcing Morgan Ensberg to change his batting stance seemingly with every pitch and watch a thousand called third strikes with runners on base. I know Lidge did not wave a shit encrusted rag over the line-up and put a 'can't hit Paris Hilton's weight' spell on them.  I know if you look close enough at the numbers you can find a bunch holes in the team that have nothing to do with him.

I still think there is a correlation between his struggles and that of the rest of the team. That kind of uncertainty with the closer has a corrosive effect on the rest of the team. It's like having an alcoholic parent..you never know when they will be out in the middle of the street yelling at traffic and soiling themselves, or when they will be reasonably normal. Lidge is that guy right now. He may bring home the groceries and be clean shaven every now and then. When things go smoothly you can fool yourselves that it's like old times. But we all know that this just isn't going to last. Next time instead of groceries he might bring home his new best friends he met at the bar, pee on the couch and steal money out of your piggy bank. Just say no to Lidge for the rest of '06.

Anatomy of a fuckup

However, they had put Jason Lane out but he didn't clear waivers, that means whoever claimed him the Astros could have worked a deal there. But they didn't.

This, to me, is ever worse.  We could have gotten SOMETHING, even if it was a single-A utility man, for Jason Lane.  In what DID happen, we end up footing the bill for the Cardinals to replace Jim Edmonds with a proven RBI man (something no one could call Jason Lane).

I appreciate what he did for Wilson as a human being.  That's very classy.  I'll vote for Purpura when he runs for mayor.  In the meantime, I thought he was trying to win ballgames.

I LOVE Borkowski in our pen, and even HE made more sense than Wilson.

If Wilson had kept playing, he would have projected to finish the year with 80 RBI, which would have meant he ended the year 2nd to only Berkman (who is from another planet).

Oh, and in case you weren't aware, Preston Wilson can competently play all 3 OF positions.

And really...that Lane is the 25th man instead of Bruntlett on the roster right now doesn't exactly impress me either.

Lane WAS down and Bruntett WAS up, so don't give me the "clearing waivers" line (not aimed at pravata; that was for anyone).

Lane was recalled when Palmerio went on leave, these are the players the Astros had at the time to play in the outfield, Wilson, Scott, Taveras, Huff, Bruntlett and Burke.  They had Quintero who could have been called up and sent down ad infinitum.  That would have given them Munson as a pinch hitter.  They also have Jimerson and Josh Anderson on the 40 and under no waiver restrictions.

How much of a reason do you think not wanting to start the clock on Jimerson's or Anderson's major league service time figured into both of them not being a option when O.P. was out?  I know Jimerson was with the club as a September callup, but does that count?

Right.  If it's blood, boobs and profanity you're looking for, it's Deadwood all the way.  When was the last time Tony actually did anything (other than beat on a hapless underling and then throw up)?  Last night, Swearengen beat a Pinkerton Captain to a pulp, repeatedly kicked him in the balls, broke numerous ribs and finally slit his throat.

I recall reading somewhere that Deadwood's creator was/is committed to another series, therefore, HBO made the decision to pull the plug.  Too bad.  FWIW, scenes between Swearingen and Woo, with numerous oaths of "Cocksucker!" are tough to beat.

"I'd like to get the ball scores a little more fucking prompt."

After the season, they are going to do two hour long episodes to tie everything up.

The best was when Jewel gave Trixie a broach or something and Trixie asked her how she got the money for it and Jewel says, "I sold a piece of pussy."

The way the episodes are now, one day in Deadwood for each episode, will be gone for next year's mini-series.  Milch said he will be able to get more of the storylines that he wanted to tell into the 4th season this way.  They are looking forward to a May-June return for the movies next year- this according to a interview with McShane I read last week.

Just allow me to vent...

I blame this entire season fiasco on Tim (fat@ss do nothing) Purpura.  It was blatantly obvious that after we got embarassed on Nat'l TV  in our first World Series appearance that this club was in dire need of hitting. So what does fat@ss do about it?  In the offseason he signs a guy that barley hits his weight in average and that's all. No other moves.  Preston "I'm not good enough to be resigned by Colorado" Wilson is gonna be the savior of our offensive woes?  Unbelievable.  The 2006 team continues to struggle offensively for 81 games and Mr. Do nothing decides to get Aubry Huff?  81 games?  Please wake me from this nightmare.  It takes 81 games to get a second tier player.  Make that deal earlier please.  Like, say, a month into the downward spiral.

Trade deadline.  Nice.  I kept reading rumors, yet amazingly Purpura couldn't (or wouldn't) pull the trigger. How can he look at this team and go into and out of the trade deadline with NO NEW OFFENSE.  It's an abbsolute crime.  Remember when we needed pitching and Jerry Hunsicker brought us Randy Johnson at the deadline?  Remember when we needed hitting and Jerry Hunsiker brought us Carlos Beltran?  Remember when it was time to re-sign Beltran and Purpura let him get away?  How'd that work out for us?  How about .289, 33 HR, 96 RBI. Brilliant.  Par for the course with fat@ss at the helm.

Rocket has an ERA of 2 and he has lost twice as many games as he has won.  Oh, I dunno, maybe if we scored more than 2 runs a game he'd be 3-3 or here's a novel concept, how about scoring 4 -5 runs a game when he's on the hill and he might be 5-1 instead which potentially could have us leading the wildcard race.  A hitter, a hitter, a hitter, PLEAaaase, bring us a hitter!

And if anyone with any clout is listening, after you bring us a new power hitter that also hits for average, a New GM would make for the greatest gift an Astro fan could ever wish for.

Now, that that is off my chest...I'll keep watchin', rootin', and prayin' that our 'Stros can pull another miracle and slip into the playoffs!

I farted...

Any word on whether it's the FSH broadcast?

FSN-Houston is scheduled to broadcast a HD feed of the Friday and Saturday games.  I don't know if FSN-Arizona is too, and if they are what feed DirecTV will be using.  The Time Warner link earlier in the thread are the games that will be produced in HD by FSN-Houston/SW.  There is also some talk that they may add some more games to the schedule in September.

It's not free. It's $99 for the upgrade. They have to come out and give you a bigger dish and a new receiver. You finally get the local HDs through DirecTV rather than over an off-the-air antenna. I'm going to call DirecTV and see how to get the Astros games in HD.

There are many reports of people that are not under contract getting the upgrade for free (and install).  I'm told the trick is to talk to "customer retention", not the regular customer service reps.  Some were charged shipping ($19.99) because they ship the equipment to your home then send the person out to install (if you get the right rep they will give you a account credit to cover the shipping charge). The direct number to customer retention can be found by searching at the AVS site I linked above.

I think you just have to call DirecTV.  They should upgrade you for free since they want everybody to be using MPEG 4 in the future (they can carry more channels because the compression is better).  If they try to get you to pay tell them will walk after your year is up and never look back.  It's worth a shot.

I've found multiple lists that show all sorts of games in HD (for example, tomorrow's game), but it's not ACTUALLY in HD in Houston (so what fucking good does that do me?).

Any help would be appreciated.

They had about 9 games in HD back in May, then a long break.  Friday's game will be the first FSN-HD game since then- it's about time.

With DirecTV I think you may need to have one of the new MPEG-4 boxes to get the local Houston HD RSN.  I'm not sure since I have Time Warner and they show the Astros/Rangers HD games on channel 302.  I know channel 95 and/or 96 on DirecTV shows some HD MLB games, but I'm not sure if they are just for out-of-market Extra Innings customers.  Your best bet may be to just call DirecTV and see if they will carry the FSN-HD feeds for the 10 HD games scheduled.

Garner's less-than-average ability as a Major League Baseball manager is nowhere near as big a problem as the Stros' chronic hitting woes or this season's overall lackluster pitching performance. Among recent Stros managers, not as bad as Jimy Williams, mind you, but certainly not as good as Larry Dierker.

It's a demonstration that driving in runs isn't the only thing middle-of-the-order hitters do. They score runs as well. That's entirely relevant to a discussion that includes a reference to Wilson's low OBP.

So Wilson's runs scored should be compared to Ensberg's?  Wilson has had Everett and Ausmus hitting behind him this season. Driving in runs might not be the only thing guys in the middle of the order do, but it would seem to be the most important.

I don't see the problem as long as he drives in runs.  If he was expected to have 100 RBI and 25 HR before the season started, how much of a difference is 100 RBI and ~15 (or less) HR?  It's still 100 RBI.  He has never been a OBP guy- his OBP was something like .325 last season.

adama, you are an idioot. totally an idiot. go post on some fantasy site. that is what you are suited for, not here.

'Course here's a quote from Garner, who I guess made the decision:

"It creates a little bit problem if Willy starts swinging the bat," Garner said. "And he has started to. In the last couple times Willy has had pinch-hit appearances, he's gotten hits. Willy is going to hit and he's going to play good. Willy's not playing now doesn't have anything to do with what Willy has done. He's struggled a little bit at the plate and we've been trying to find something to make us click. We tried Chris out there and he's been playing good since it happened."

The Link

I would expect Garner to say that.  No need to throw Willy under the bus in public.

My last year was 1991 so it was well after my time, but that 1997 team did some impressive things.  I seem to remember a game that they hit 8 or 9 HRs in.  I don't remember the year (late 90's), it might have been '97 but I don't know how many (if any) were consecutive.  I want to say it was regional game, but I'm not sure.

Bleach Meloosky is an excellent example of what Burke is looking at.  Meloosky had two surgeries if I remember correctly.  One was done in the minors and then another one when he re-injured the shoulder in the majors.  It will take the entire season away from Burke to have it done.

Hopefully Burke's in 'n' out shoulder condition foreshadows him becoming more of a "loose cannon" type, ala Riggs (Mel Gibson) from Lethal Weapon, who used his condition to escape from a pretty hairy straight-jacket situation or two...but who would be the Murtaugh to Burke's Riggs, I wonder?

Huge play.  And yes, nice throw by Berkman.

it's weird with officer brad because he usually appears to be one of the worst when it comes to plays at the plate, but he's one of the best when it comes to blocking pitches.  the throw by berkman had a definite "blocking pitches" kind of bounce to it.

So it's been reported that Biggio's "strength and conditioning guru" is one of the redacted names in the Grimsley search warrant affidavit?  If so that's a helluva lot more of a conversation piece than a off-the-cuff remark by Boomer Wells.  Like it or not, Biggio also wasn't on a pace to hit 80 homeruns a couple of weeks ago.

Willie T.-looked strong last night in CF made a great running catch on a line drive to rcf (even more important got a great jump)and then made a real good play cutting off another ball in the gap and holding CoArd to a single.

Morgan -good solid play at 3rd...

Ausmus- as good as he is defensively, he isn't strong on tag plays or blocking the plate. The Ensberg play the ball beat the runner by a bunch and the guy should have been out by a mile, but if you look at the replay he damn near snuck his foot in there before the (high) tag.

Wandy and Buchholz are pitching well so far, but this doesn't excuse Purp from not getting a veteran backup option in the offseason.

None of these young pitchers are a proven commodity, and rookies tend to go downhill a few months in once the league starts to figure them out. See "Robertson, Jeriome". One of these guys may turn out to be good, or even great, but not all three/four of them at the same time while trying to win a division.

There's also no guarantee that Backe is going to come back and pitch this season. The GM is going to have to face this eventually, and do his job. Plugging in inexperienced pitchers is only a stopgap. What happens if Pettitte or Oswalt get hurt?!? I'm not really in favor of throwing bags of cash at Team Bastard for a half-season of Clemens' "no run support" whining, either.

I'm not totally blaming the youngsters, the pitching staff isn't getting it done as a whole. It's not like the Rockies and Dodgers are the 1927 Yankees.

Still, the bump in the road this season is a whole lot better than last year at this time! (so far.)

A win tonight will make me feel a lot better.

Which veteran pitcher should he have signed?

What makes you think he didn't look into any veterans out there?

Why would anyone predict Backe was going to get injured?

Why didn't Oswalt start sucking once everyone had seen him a few times?

Why are Wandy and Taylor the same as Jeriome?

Why have the Rockies been winning when not facing the Astros youngsters?

What happens to a team when any of their good pitchers get hurt?

Those are all very good points, but Mr. "Minor League Coordinator" Purpura seems to think that the only guys that can help the team are in the Astros minor league system.

The excuse of "looking into outside help" is a lot different than having the  cojones  to pull the trigger on a major signing or trade to actually help the team. It's not like that can happen right now, but he should have been a lot more active in the winter, and should be more active at the deadline. Preston Wilson was a nice first step, but it was obvious then as it is now that another pitcher or two was needed.

It will be interesting to see if he can make some real MLB GM-type moves once the Bagwell contract is off the books. That is, if Mr. McLane will let him.

BTW: I've been whining about the Astros since 1986, so that's nothing new.
I'll stop when the Astros win a championship, and not that stupid Boot either.

What is it that you wanted the Astros to do this winter?  Saying "they should of done something", or "signed another bat" doesn't indicate what the problem was.

Ringolsby is right, His opinion was very constructive in my opinion & to tell you the truth, I agree with him. The grocer didn't do everything possible, with that being said hopefully Drayton will get the deal done so we can have Clemens because I think he can still help us, But with the emergence of TBUCK and company it's not as high of a concern.

By the way, how constructive was his opinion when he said McLane was going to "low ball" Clemens?

I'm sure Clemens is very happy with the way things have gone.  He gets to keep doing his little drama show for much longer than if the Astros would have offered him arbitration.  Who's to say Clemens or his people didn't tell the Astros not to offer him arbitration because there was no chance he would play a complete season, and a very slim chance that he would play at all (and if he did play it would be with the Astros).  This works out better for him.  If that did happen the Astros know that going public with it would piss off Clemens and probably guarantee his retirement.  Who benefits the most from Clemens not being offered arbitration? Clemens gets a semi bidding war for his services without looking bad to the general public.

I'm not saying that this is what happened.  I'm only pointing out that this has been the best possible outcome for somebody that wants to start the season a few months late, but still needs to be the center of attention.  If the Astros were told that Clemens would either pitch for them starting in June or retire, but only if they didn't offer him arbitration would they say no?  The small PR backlash would be forgotten after Clemens either signs or announces his retirement in late May, or June. This was a business decision (not really a baseball decision), and how many people think McLane has made it this far by making bad business decisions?  This wouldn't be the first "handshake" deal that has taken place behind the scenes.

Great information Pravata.  The sad thing is most "fans" allow the media to think for them.  I have met many sports writers/columnists over the years, and 90% of the time it's somebody that was abused (or withdrawn) in H.S. with a need to now show how much better he is than everybody else (including the people they write about).

The reading public is probably the most at fault when it comes to the state of sports journalism.  We allow some of these hacks to pass off anything they write as fact without being held accountable when they get it wrong (or talk from both sides of their mouth).  This is the ESPN era...damn the facts.

It was a terrible decision on Biggio's part, I knew he was meat as soon as he rounded 2nd. The game was tied at that point and if he would have stayed at 2nd, it would have given Berkman a chance to knock him in as long as WillyT didn't hit into a linedrive double play. Really terrible decision on Bidge's part.

It took a beautiful relay throw to get him by a hair.  I don't see how it can be looked at as a "really terrible decision".  It may have been the wrong decision (because he was thrown out), but the risk/reward of the situation made it a good move, IMO.

I disagree because if Lance gets a base knock, or willy for that matter, he will pretty much score from 2nd on anything. It basically gave us at least 2 opportunities to knock him in. Rickie Weeks did a similar thing today, it was a different scenario but he was caught trying to make it to 3rd with 0 outs in the inning and it came back to hurt him.

There was nothing similar about it, except both ending in outs.  When it's a 1 run game with 1 out, trying to get to 3rd isn't a wrong move.  The odds of getting that run in are much better with the runner on 3rd and 1 out.  Sure, they would have had two shots to get him in if he would have been on 2nd, but getting him on third and pulling the IF in increases the chance of scoring the run (and gives you a better shot at a big inning).  It wasn't like he was out by a mile.  It took a perfect play, and just about any player in that same situation with decent speed would have tried for 3rd.  The players understand how much that extra 90' helps in that situation.  Chances are doing it with 0 outs, and down by 4 will get you a $50 fine in kangaroo court, even if you get in under the tag.

How about putting on a squeeze- signal to the batter (adjusting your cup is one very unoriginal squeeze sign), but he must signal you back a reply, then a verbal signal for the guy on third (maybe his last name followed by number of outs).

This was when the fish played like 8 games in 5 days and contributed to them wilting down the stretch.

Games in Florida got rained out and some (1?) was made up at Wrigley.  Cubs were considered the home team and batted last, which was total BS.

Good point. I didn't intend to sound an alarm on Wilson. I just, in general, sometimes feel like Garner's one downside is overaggressive baserunning. But I'm a big fan of him, and I consider that a minor downsider, if one at all. I could be mistaken.

I was just surprised the other day when (if I remember correctly) we hit and run with Ensberg on 1b and Wilson at bat. That struck me as a questionable hit and run combo, but what do I know?

And good point on the small sample size and good record. I wasn't whining about our offense. Just trying to gauge y'all's thoughts on whether Garner pushes too hard to manufacture runs.

That wasn't a hit and run.    It was a 3-2 count and Ensberg may have went on his own expecting either contact or a walk (maybe in a effort to keep out of a double play?).  At this level there are players that (can)run without needing a sign given to them.

They did it last season in the middle of September (last season was tough on the grass because they were not able keep the roof open as much as they wanted due to weather).  They also replaced all of the turf during this past off-season.  They switched to a different kind of grass from the previous year (parks without a roof will sometimes bring in new turf after the season is over).

I think that Barzilla's saying the same thing.  If he were younger, taking a job as a statistician for a minor league team might have been okay.  But it's not realistic for him right now.  Given what I know about salaries paid to minor league executives, I understand his position.

Why would the Astros be impressed with somebody that keeps stats?

Ok, ignore my post above.  I was referring to Time Warner's high-def lineup only.  I didn't know FSN had a high-def channel.  Guess I better get on the phone to Time Warner cable (like that'll make any difference...it took 'em two years to get ESPN HD).

Is this on DirecTV or Dish?  Maybe I'll have to look into that again.

I'm getting my info from  tv guide online.  They list channel 1604 for FSNHD and as a high def channel.  On the grid, you can click on the link "HDTV only" to view the listing.  BTW - this is the listing from Time Warner/Round Rock and Austin, so you're listing may be different.

Well I'll be damned.  You people in Austin are getting a high-def FSN on Time Warner cable?!  I'm getting on the phone right now!  It ain't fair!

However, even though you lucky dogs may have the channel, I'm not sure tonight's game is in HD, even though it's on that TV Guide thingy.  After looking into this a little more, FSN's HD guide:  The Link  only shows that there are a few "real" HD broadcasts on each of their networks each month.  It's not showing any Astros games in April.  I'm betting they just show their regular broadcast on their HD channel otherwise.  Hopefully I'm wrong and you get the Astros in full HD glory tonight, but I'm not sure you will.

Last year IN-HD2 (or IN-HD) would broadcast the FSN-HD Astros games.  There were about 15 as I recall.  Last season on astros.com they had the FSN-HD games listed on the schedule (a "HD" next to the game).  I don't see that for this season, but it doesn't mean they won't be showing any games in HD.  I know MMP has HD cameras already set up, and there are a few MLB teams that are broadcasting almost all games in HD.  In my opinion there is nothing in HD that looks better than baseball.  It's about as close as you can get to being at the park without having to hear somebody behind you yelling at Garner for not making Clemens the opening day starter.

Sounds like there were fans under the impression Bagwell was going to be like a groundhog.  If he throws a strike to third base the Astros get one more year of Jeff Bagwell, if he doesn't they get a check from Lloyd's of London.

I wonder if he's tried throwing sidearm.

He goes on to say that this same dipshit asked the following question:  "Hey Raj (as he taps him on the shoulder to get his attention), so...you serve up that homerun pitch to Koby so he'd look good in front of the Astros management?"

I don't know about before games, but after games a few of the players will sign as they drive out of the underground garage.  From what I have been told Bagwell is pretty close to a sure thing after games (more so if it's after a win).  It's my understanding he is one of the last players to leave because he works out after the games so you might have to wait a little while.

As far as paying for them, I think it only costs $5 for a autograph ticket at Fan Fest and the money goes to the Astros in Action Foundation (pretty good cause).  That's much better than the crazy prices some people pay at those card shows.

What if he doesn't produce "120-150 RBI again"?  What if he would put up numbers similar to what he had in 2005 post All-Star break?  Is it still worth it?  What if he demands a trade after his first season with the Astros?  Would they get as much in return as they gave away?

Other teams might not be willing to give up much for a guy (with a big contract) that demanded a trade two years in a row, with two different teams.

Being released on $5000 bail sounds like they don't think he's much of a flight risk, or a danger to the community.  I would guess they might allow him to plead guilty to a non-violent offense (felony theft), and he might get probation (as a first time offender).

It seems the Astros feel Ausmus' play warranted the pay raise, he did put together a nice season in '05 (.350+ OBP in addition to his defense).  As far as him being 37, I don't see why that should impact him getting a raise.  Ausmus has not shown any signs of breaking down physically, quite the opposite.  He has been one of the most durable catchers in baseball (no trips to the DL) and he seems to be immune from wearing down towards the end of the season (kinda immpresive when you look at the number of games he catches).

It's been discussed at length elsewhere on this forum- Burke doesn't have the skills, esp. the arm, to play major-league SS. To me, Everett's trade value vs. Replacement/ upgrade cost is not good. You ride him out, and hope he can hit .260 and take some more walks. He's already got plenty of power and speed for the glove.

I realize that.  That's why my comment included "Would the extra offense that Burke may provide be enough to make up for the extra outs the Astros' opponents might get by way of more errors, less range, and slower release/weaker arm".  My point was that thinking Burke would be a better option at SS than the current starter is pretty fucking stupid. Has Burke shown that he is (or can be) such a improvement over Everett at the plate that it would make up for the defensive downgrade?  Would the extra offense that Burke may provide be enough to make up for the extra outs the Astros' opponents might get by way of more errors, less range, and slower release/weaker arm?  I think that might be too big of a gamble because if it doesn't work out (and Everett is gone) the only other option on the roster could be Bruntlett.  Bruntlett playing everyday limits Garner's options off the bench among other things.

Whatever your reasons, I still can't agree with the notion that pitchers pitching for contact to a area of the field is "more a myth than anything else", or "it works so rarely that it is irrelevant in a discussion".  Not to even mention Maddox (the story of him calling a pop up to 3rd during a mound visit then the next pitch turns into a pop up to 3rd comes to mind) and others that have it down to a science. The nuttiest person I know, Paul Byrd (I don't think he has ever struck a hitter out) has made much more money than I could ever hope to by being successful at that very thing.

As pravata said Jeff Kent told all who would listen during his two years in Houston that MMPUS was not the great hitters park others made it out to be (he went so far as to say it was really a pitchers park).  He hit a shit load of long outs from LC to dead center.  Why didn't he hit some of those 400' outs to the 315' Crawford Boxes?  Could it have something to do with the pitcher wanting him to hit the ball to center and left-center?

I played 1988, 1991, and 1992.  As HH said Joey's last year was '87.  His brother Terry also played at LSU, and his last year was my fr. year.  He was nice to the freshmen but other than that I didn't hang around him (freshmen were/are the lowest form of life there is).  He and Joey are twins (not identical, the other kind) but Joey never stopped by like some of the other guys did after they had finished their careers.  Joey was a little different since he got suspended at the end of his last season for talking back to God (Bertman)among other things.

I skipped '89 and '90 because I was also trying to play football, and the head football coach at the time didn't think guys with football scholarships should be missing most of spring practice playing baseball.  I finally figured out my future wasn't in football, then later I found out my future wasn't in baseball either.  What do I know?

I guess I don't understand that because I feel Furcal has better range, arm strength and greater ability for outs that AE cannot get (deep in the hole, off balance, etc).  I have seen that little man rob way more hits than AE.  Granted, the play on Cathead up the middle in the NLCS by AE was great, as well as the game ending DP, but I think Furcal makes those plays also.

Furcal has a stronger arm.  They are about equal in terms of range.  I dont' think there's any ball that Furcal can get to that Everett cannot.  Everett has a better glove.  Everett is quicker turning the DP.  Everett's arm is more accurate.

I can see the glove part, but I thing Furcal is quicker to the ball...I would not have the first idea who is quicker turning the DP, only that arm strength has a LOT to do with turning one (so I would have to seriously question how AE would be quicker than Furcal...given his footwork does not strike me as better than Furcal's)

If you think Everett doesn't show GREAT footwork while turning two then, with all due respect you must have no idea what to look for.  Everett has one of the most beautiful pivots I have ever seen.  He makes something that is so difficult look too easy.  It almost pisses me off...the game is much harder than he makes it look.

I have been a baseball fan since I can remember.  My dad has played and coached all of my life, along with my uncles, grandfather , and my brother I played at LSU (88,91,92).  I had a attitude back then that I guess can be blamed on my youth.  I had some disapointments when it came to my draft positions (or lack of after my senior year).  I allowed that to rob me of the joy that can only be felt by being a "baseball fan".  I gave up playing baseball in 1992 after 39 games in Peoria with the Cubs organization (yea I know).  For 3 summers after that I lived with a empty feeling that could not be described.  In 1996 I finally understood that pretending not to love the game just because I didn't accomplish the things I thought I should have was one of the dumbest things I could have done (and I've done quite a few).  I went back to the team I loved as a kid.  The team I always dreamed of playing for.  If it's possible to fall in love with something twice, I did it.  I  am now able to have some of the same feelings I had when I was a kid, clipping every Astros boxscore out of the paper and saving them every season.  We didn't have many games on TV in Baton Rouge, but we had the games on the radio, and for that I was thankful.  When that rare Saturday game of the week that involved the Astros came around I felt like my birthday had come early. The few times the astros were on Monday night baseball were like a extra Christmas.  I found those feelings again after being without them for so long.  A friend of mine told me about the BFT in 99, and I then found out there were others that "get" the Astros just like me.  I didn't post, just lots of reading.  It was nice to find people that understood how hard this game is.  I always wanted a place to get more information on the ballclub than the media provided.  I found many boards on the net, but they were all populated with "fans" that turned on the very team they claimed to love after every loss.  They were always able to figure out what "should" have been done after the fact, and were quick with a "I told you so" when players would struggle.  I have found on this site, just like the BFT, fans that understand how complex the game is.  They understand that not just anybody can be a GM, and that Brad Ausmus shouldn't be judged by his batting average alone. For that I thank you all.

Now we wait for pitchers and catchers to report.  We wait for the 2006 Houston Astros to take the field on opening day.  The National League Champion Houston Astros...wow.

My experience is exactly the opposite. I go to a lot of baseball games for personal and business reasons, and I think most Houston baseball games are about the same crowd.  Some business folk, some families, some social groups, and some more-or-less passers by.  There are a few baseball-heads, but not too many. Business folk are a big part of every Astros crowd, and for the most part they go to the games year in and year out because they like baseball and know something about it.  They also like the Astros.  At playoff games, though, you get the addition of revved-up male bonding groups, the average age of which is about 25, which stand and scream from start to finish. I'm not sure I see much in it that has to do with the game. It's generally annoying, doesn't help the team, and has more to do with the exhibition put on by the guy standing and screaming than anything that's going to happen on the field.

There are times when I think energy helps, but those bits and pieces of the game happen pretty naturally.  If everybody behind you and in front of you is sitting, it's probably time to sit.  And anybody who wasn't sitting around looking drained at least part of the time last night wasn't there.  It was pretty exhausting, emotionally and physically.

Good post.  Maybe it's because I'm older than 25, but I agree 100%.

In case anybody was wondering, the gates open at 4pm.

I thought on game days they stop them at 5.  Every game this season that we got to after 5 the meters were turned off.  Maybe it's just around the park, but none of them would take any money after 5.

Quote:

Oh man.  We drove past $30 parking for the NLDS (across the street from the stadium) and paid $7 to park at the Brown CC, literally 20 feet further down the street.  Just makes me laugh.

That's like .78 beers.

I guess you didn't look at the red flags.  The people that see those red flags turn into the parking lot, not knowing for sure why they're doing it. They meet the attendant, as innocent as children. "Of course, we won't mind if you park," the man with the flag will say, "It's only fifty dollars per car." And they'll pass over the money without even thinking about it: for it's money they have and parking they lack.

The drive shouldn't be too bad up 45.  It takes me about 15 minutes, 20 tops to get to the park from Clear Lake.

Has anybody heard if they are changing the street parking for the WS?  We always get there early and park at a meter about a block or two away.  The meters are turned off at 5 I think so you only have to put in a few dollars for a nice spot.  I am always amazed when there are dozens of spots left on the street, yet there are still idiots passing on them to pay $25 for a space the same distance away.  I guess the red flags the parking lot attendants wave have a hypnotic effect on drivers.

"Hurt or killed" is absurd, it's not like Wrigley where they throw things and have the usher throw you out just if you are wearing opposing team's colors. Every one in a while there is the occasional drunk douche but there is no risk of harm of opposing team's fans coming to the Cell, in fact, there's a lot that make the trip throughout the year. In the last series, there were these obnoxious pricks from Cleveland that were screaming throughout the whole game, but quieted down after the Sox won, people let them be.

Bullshit or not, Limey's original post was true.  I have yet to find a link for it, but I did hear Biggio on the radio comment on the incident.  He said his wife was fine, and that the person who hit her made a big mistake going after a Jersey girl.  He said she chased the guy down, then alerted security.  The man was then arrested.

By that definition someone "chokes" in every situtaion of every game.

That's bullshit.

I second that.  It's crazy to say that every fucking at bat in a close and late situation with runners on will end up with either the pitcher or hitter choking.  Hell'va way to look at the game.

I agree, Burke vs. Jenks gives you almost a zero chance of the ball being put in play (K would be the worst possible outcome).  Lamb may not have been to good vs. LH this year, but, as pointed out above last season he did a very good job against them (.349/.417/.581 in 43 AB).  That .179 this year can be taken with a grain of salt since Lamb didn't do to well against any pitchers the first 5 months of the season.  He has looked more like the Lamb from '04 the last couple of months.  Even though Lamb didn't get the job done, I think leaving him in was a good choice.

There was a quote the other day (at astros.com I think) that said he hit 5 in a row out in BP.  Take that with a grain of salt since it didn't say where they went out (could have been flyballs to the Crawford Boxes).  If they were line drives to the LF power alley, CF, or the other way, that would be a good sign.

So, what about the next time Ensberg goes pumping his fists around first?

You consider that "showboating"?  I think there is a big difference between showing emotion after a HR (while running around the bases at a good pace) that may have tied the game, or put your team ahead late in the game (which are the only times I have ever seen that from Ensberg), and taking time to admire your HR- then walking halfway to 1st before starting your trot.

I should add that unless things have drasticly changed in the last 10-15 years, the 1st is not a problem, but the 2nd may fall into the area of "showing-up" the other side.  Back then the second action might get some comments from the dugout, or maybe from the pitcher. It would take a few of those before a message would be suggested unless there were other factors (if the other guy was sleeping with one of your teammate's girlfriend for instance).  Most of the time other than the pitcher, and maybe the catcher the rest of the fielders might not even notice something like that during the game.

The players vote, but most of the time any player that spent any amount of time with the big club will get some % of the share.  I think it's a pretty good chance that he'll get a full share.  Most of the time the veterans will give the younger guys full shares even if they didn't spend the whole season with the club.  That playoff share if a nice chunk of change when your making ~$316,000 a year.

It would be very, very stupid to taunt the BBG's during this time of the year.  I think that most on this board understand the reasoning for not predicting a NL championship for the hometown nine.

I own three options for both the 1st and 2nd World Series games in Houston.  The fact remains that the BBG's should be respected, so I will say that I don't expect to go to any World Series games this year, it was just a investment.

This site (www.theticketreserve.com) is kinda neat.  You can buy options to purchase playoff tickets at face value if your team ends up playing in that game.  Two months ago home games 1 and 2 for the NLDS at MMP were going for $2-6 each. Not to bad.  Even though the Astros won't make it, the WS options were going for $8 last month for game 1 at MMP, for some reason they are much higher now.

MLB.tv uses your IP address to find out your location.  If you can find a open proxy server in one of the countries outside the blackout area you can get the game.  If you already have a MLB.tv account, you may have to create another one after going thru the new proxy.  You can then pay for a one-day access to watch the game(s) (I think it's around $4).  I have not done this for a few games that have not been broadcast on TV in Houston this season.

You can go to this site(www.ip2location.com) to see where MLB's server thinks you are after you have changed your proxy server.  Be sure to clear your cache, and cookies before going to MLB.tv to sign up with your new proxy settings.  A google search will give you plenty of sites with free, open proxy lists.  You will probably have to try a few, as some won't still be open, and others may be a little slow.  You shouldn't have too much of a problem finding a decent one, it just may take a few tries.  Be sure to confirm your location with the above site before going to MLB.tv, you can also go to  www.whatismyip.com to make sure your ip has been changed correctly.  It is also a good idea to make sure you have a good firewall when doing this.

I am in no way advocating any attempts to bypass MLB's blackout restrictions, or using a proxy without permission.  I am only providing information about the process.  Be sure to look out the window every 5-10 minutes to make sure there are no black helicopters above your location.  Putting aluminum foil over your walls, and ceiling has proved to be a good way of keeping the helicopter's mind-reading waves from entering your home.
