Anybody use this?  I'm in the Astros home market (Austin).  I don't have cable, but I'd like to watch a game every now and then.  If I understand right, they base it on your billing address, so I'll obviously be blacked out of any ESPN and Fox games.  Anybody know if I'll get the rest of the games?  Also, how is the quality?
Let me explain something to you. Um, I am not "Mr. Lebowski". You're Mr. Lebowski. I'm the Dude. So that's what you call me. You know, that or, uh, His Dudeness, or uh, Duder, or El Duderino if you're not into the whole brevity thing.

I found the quality passable last year.  Apparantly, they have doubled the screen resolution for the year.  I'll find out tonight!!!!!!!!!!!

The base it on your IP address, and you will be blacked out of ALL Houston games because you are in their home market.  Your IP address would have to be from another area to get any Astros games.

If you were to use a proxy server with a IP from another area MLB would not know the difference.  Of course circumventing MLB's blackout restrictions would be a very bad thing to do...

Yep, you're right.  I signed up for it last year using my parents AZ address in an attempt to get the Nationals games here.  It didn't work.  However, one of my friends who has an office in the far outlying DC suburbs, the zip code of which is on the blackout list, WAS able to view Nats games from out there.

The quality of the other games was good. When it's in the medium sized window it was tv-picture quality without any interuptions.

What pissed me off was that the Astros game was blacked out, even though I live in Dallas. Anyone know a reason for this?

Dallas has always been blacked out on mlb.tv.  They have a drop down menu on the main page at the bottom that will show which zip codes are blacked out for each team.  The Astros market (according to MLB) extends into OK and LA, so it's a rather large area.

Proxy server will NOT work. Trust me. However, a nice VPN tunnel (not split tunnel) will...

Proxy has been working for the past 3 years, and worked for the game tonight.  There are many anon proxy sites and it may take a few attempts, but's it's very easy to do and as I said, it works.   This  article explains how MLB finds your location, no vpn needed.

Wouldn't a proxy present bandwidth problems?

Yes it could if you had to use it the whole time.  If you were to use the proxy for the initial (you must wait until you get the first blackout message before switching) authorization, then change back to your regular connection it will still work.  (even if you don't switch some of them (proxy) can handle the 350-700kbps that MLB.tv requires)

I'm from Chicago, and the feed worked pretty well for me but they're trying to get the kinks out of the new player.

There was some choppiness and frame drops on the Astros game last night, and they used Astros local radio audio but cut the between-inning commercials. Sweet - no more Cincinnati "chili" ads this year.

Thankfully, this all still works on a Mac. Unlike some other web video services, no Win-media monoply here.  Now hopefully the Astros can get some runs (and hits) for tonight's game.
