Rockies interested in Wilson?

This mornings Austin American Statesman reporting the Rockies are interested in a trade for Preston Wilson.  Opinions on who the Astros might target from them?

During the height of the trade deadline mania, I perused ESPN.com's rumor central. Out of all the wild-assed speculation, there was one very believable, and laughable nugget commenting that "the Rockies are now refusing a trade with the Red Sox that would send Ray King to Boston in exchange for Julian Taveraz."

wouldn't we be happy to get just about anything for him?  after 10 days, if we don't trade him, doesn't he just walk with his paycheck?  can he sign with another team at that point?  if somebody DOES pick him up, do we get compensatory draft picks like with free agents?  i'm guessing if Tim can get a mid-level prospect for him, that'd be fine, but maybe i don't understand how the DFA process works.

I'm here, barely.  Life has made it a little difficult to follow the Rockies this year so I can't really give a read on their roster that you couldn't get by looking at their website.  While I personally would love to have Jeff Francis on the Astros, no way they are giving him up for anyone right now.  I think you'd have to guess that it'll eventually be a minor leaguer who the Astros go after if they can actually get a trade done (and I'm sad enough that I haven't made it to a single Sky Sox game this year and they're in my town!).

The Rockies are getting the band back together.  They've signed Vinny. Link  As for the Wilson situation,

"I think if they don't trade him by tomorrow (8/15) they're going to go ahead and release him and let us sign with another club," Wilson's agent Bob Bry said Monday. "Then they would be on the hook for the balance of his contract. [Houston GM] Tim [Purpura] told me he'd go ahead and release Preston and let us make our own deal, starting tomorrow."

Okay, so according to the MLB.com article, if we release him and somebody else picks him up, at least we recoup whatever his new contract is worth for this year from what we still owe him.  Clearly wouldn't be all of it, but it's better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick.

Exactly.  There is very little salary relief if the Astros release him.  If he's claimed on waivers or traded, then whoever gets him pays the remainder of his salary.  I assume the Astros have requested waivers on him already.

Yep.  The DRays released him and the Astros signed him for the league minimum.  And that was in May of that year, so the DRays payed Vinny $7,000,000 of his $7,250,000 salary, even though he played 122 games for the Astros.
