Astros in HD?
« on: August 03, 2006, 03:36:14 pm »
I can't believe what a pain in the ass it is to find this simple fucking information, but does anyone have a list of Astros games that will be broadcast in HD (I have DirecTV with the HD package and Houston locals) the rest of this year?

I've found multiple lists that show all sorts of games in HD (for example, tomorrow's game), but it's not ACTUALLY in HD in Houston (so what fucking good does that do me?).

Any help would be appreciated.

Here's the schedule as per Time Warner Houston.  Tomorrow and Saturday are both in HD.

Fuck, you're kidding me.  So, basically, I get screwed (again) for having DirecTV instead of cable?

FSN SW/H HD isn't on DirecTV, is it?

They had about 9 games in HD back in May, then a long break.  Friday's game will be the first FSN-HD game since then- it's about time.

With DirecTV I think you may need to have one of the new MPEG-4 boxes to get the local Houston HD RSN.  I'm not sure since I have Time Warner and they show the Astros/Rangers HD games on channel 302.  I know channel 95 and/or 96 on DirecTV shows some HD MLB games, but I'm not sure if they are just for out-of-market Extra Innings customers.  Your best bet may be to just call DirecTV and see if they will carry the FSN-HD feeds for the 10 HD games scheduled.

Here is a VERY long thread about DirecTV adding local RSN HD channels.  I didn't read it so I don't know what page the information you need is on.  I thought I had heard that a new set-top box is needed to get the new channels- I don't know for sure.

If I hadn't JUST signed a new one-year deal with DTV, I'd drop them in a heartbeat.  It was the only way to get the new installation for free (and I already owned all the equipment).

As for checking 95 and 96, I always do.  It's my only chance.

Thank GOD, they show mostly Yankee games, because I just can't watch enough Yankees.

I think you just have to call DirecTV.  They should upgrade you for free since they want everybody to be using MPEG 4 in the future (they can carry more channels because the compression is better).  If they try to get you to pay tell them will walk after your year is up and never look back.  It's worth a shot.

You can never get enough of the Yankees.  Too bad they don't use 95 for Yankees and 96 for Red Sox- THAT would be heaven...

It's not free. It's $99 for the upgrade. They have to come out and give you a bigger dish and a new receiver. You finally get the local HDs through DirecTV rather than over an off-the-air antenna. I'm going to call DirecTV and see how to get the Astros games in HD.

There are many reports of people that are not under contract getting the upgrade for free (and install).  I'm told the trick is to talk to "customer retention", not the regular customer service reps.  Some were charged shipping ($19.99) because they ship the equipment to your home then send the person out to install (if you get the right rep they will give you a account credit to cover the shipping charge). The direct number to customer retention can be found by searching at the AVS site I linked above.

DirecTV's Web site indicates that the Astros-D'Backs game will be in HD on Channel 96.

Do a search for "Astros" here:

The Link

Not clear whether the Extra Innings package is necessary.

They missed their first appointment to install my upgrade, so I called and bitched until I got half off the installation.

If I can't get it without the package, I'm going to call and raise hell. I shouldn't need to buy the package to see a game for my local team.

Come to think of it, if it's the Arizona broadcast, they'll black it out.

Any word on whether it's the FSH broadcast?

FSN-Houston is scheduled to broadcast a HD feed of the Friday and Saturday games.  I don't know if FSN-Arizona is too, and if they are what feed DirecTV will be using.  The Time Warner link earlier in the thread are the games that will be produced in HD by FSN-Houston/SW.  There is also some talk that they may add some more games to the schedule in September.

FSN-Arizona IS also doing an HD broadcast of tomorrow's game, so we may be fucked.

From a technical standpoint, DirecTV/Dish has far less bandwidth to broadcast with than cable does.  HD programming takes mucho bandwidth, which is why they've been very slow put regional HD channels on satellite systems.  It's a lot easier for cable to put up more HD channels, as bandwidth is less of a concern.

DirecTV (and Dish network as well) is in the process of moving all their channels from MPEG2 to MPEG4 AVC compression, which will make them look slightly shittier but will let them broadcast more HD channels.  As others have already posted, this requires a new dish and new satellite receiver.

Houston has made the initial cut, so DirecTV is already broadcasting the Houston locals in HD.

Uhhhhhhh.

No.

I checked ch 96 about a dozen times during the game and had a black screen (CHANNEL NOT AVAILABLE).

The Yankee game, of course, on 95 was crystal clear.

Better call 'em and ask whether you have to have the MPEG-4 box. Of course, I'm not sure why you'd need one for the Astros but not for the Yankees.

I was pleasantly surprised.

The important thing is I was fucked again.

What's weird is the Astros game wasn't even listed on the guide for that channel.  Just NOT AVAILABLE.

For what it's worth, for everyone else with DirecTV, it appears as though our game is Channel 95 tonight.  Even I have that on my guide.

Does it say if it's a FSN-Houston production?  Maybe Time Warner will carry it too, I'm spoiled after the first two games of the series being wins and in HD.

Based on this weekend, it's 2-0.  Although I can't figure out how to factor in you not getting it Friday when everyone else did.

Also, I can't help but wonder if the lack of HD broadcast on Sunday was the X factor in the Astros not pushing over at least one more run in the 9th.

Edit:  From what I can tell, the Astros are 4-2 in HD broadcasts, not including Big Fox Saturday afternoon games, nor ESPN games.
