The Market Square area of downtown isn't bad.  You have Warren's and La Carafe ON the square, but within walking distance you have O.K.R.A and Hearsay.  Walk down a block to Travis and Franklin and there is Houston Watch Company (my new fav small bar) and Public Services Wine & Whisky (in the Cotton Exchange Building).  Main St. between Preston and Congress is lined with bars.

While I've not been yet, I understand the show and dinner at Prohibition is well worth it.

As far as excitement, Hatcher's Homer is the most I've ever been over a baseball game.

Agreed...  and the foul ball he hit just prior to the homer made it even more enjoyable.

In fact, other than fruit-based beers, the only type of beer I don't like is brown ale, as it is just dishwater with (or maybe without) a head.  Now, there are plenty of brands that I don't like, who make horrible versions of types of beer that I do like, but that's not the same thing (obviously).

This... There's not a brown ale I've enjoyed.

Just as statement to put out there:  I love everything that is made by the fine gentlemen and gentleladies at Karbach.  What an amazing story that place is.

I can agree with this with the exception of their Christmas seasonal, Yule Shoot Your Eye Out.  Way too much juniper in the mix.  Like drinking a pine tree air freshener

Both are on my hit-list, would love to know what you think.

Wasn't bad...  I dug the interior which has a sharp, modern "diner" feel to it.  Not sure how many people frequent here on the weekend, but there were maybe 6 other people in the place on a Monday evening.

The food was nice, although not earth-shattering.  I had the pot roast and the wife had the trout.  The starters (popcorn shrimp on chili-aioli and Caesar salad) were ok. Although the watermelon bits with the shrimp was a pleasant surprise as a pairing.

The butterscotch pudding dessert was awesome, but I'm a butterscotch pudding fan from way back.

All in all, like Lucille's in the Museum District (which I prefer to BFD) it's high end comfort food.  Not sure if I'll go back on the regular menu, but would recommend it this month.

While D&T's IS awesome...  it's a refurbished ice house.  Still...  my new fav place.

For "upscale"...  I like Hearsay and the bar in the ICON Hotel, both just off Market Square.  Also... there is Downhouse in the Heights, however... the lead bartender there is now running D&T Drive In, so I can no longer promise proper cocktails

I really despise myself for picking on the slow kid, as a result I've tried to stay away from Justice, but this is just too ridiculous.  June 14th he wrote a column about how Mclane has ruined the Astros, lets compare a couple of statements, because it's all I have the stomach for, from that column and today's blog,

(June 14) McLane talks the talk about being a champion, but he hasn't walked the walk that often.

(Today) The Astros are one of baseball's five winningest teams since Drayton McLane bought them. Does that make them smart? Sure it does. and ... Cheap? He's definitely not cheap.

(June 14) He has been wrong plenty of times, but never more wrong than this. (not signing Pettitte) He's paying for that mistake to this day.

(Today) No more big-ticket free-agent signings. None. Zippo. Pocket that money or take a vacation or give bonuses to your employees.
http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/justice/baseball/5837295.html

Give him credit.  He's just keeping to his Hypocritic Oath he took once he signed on at the Chronicle.

Not necessarily. Maybe I should have been stronger in my praise. Anytime you can get four runs home against one of the premiere closers of all time with two out, that's some real clutch hitting. Cruz's AB was a thing of beauty.

Well… seams their mite bee sum problems with you’re hole premise.

75
Yep, Gran Paradiso.  The food's pretty good there, I think, although it's gotten bad reviews for service.  I've only ever been there for lunch, so maybe they're in a better mood earlier in the day.  The place that Loco Mexicano replaced wasn't bad either.  Another decent one is along Buck House road, near the Thistle Victoria (yes, I like my Italian food...)

SW1 isn't a bad address for a flat...what pubs do you like?  Usually my workmates and I go to the Cardinal behind the Cathedral;  it's a nice place, but too hard to give directions to if you're not actually in the area.  Cheapest beer in the area we've found so far.  Buy two pints and you get change from a fiver...nice...

I like The Cardinal... a lot.  I really like The Albert for a steak pie (but it does get crowded because of its location), but since Fuller's ESB is my drink of choice, we'll pop over to The Jugged Hare on Vauxhaul Bridge.  Not a traditional, but a refurbished bank building.  Before the no smoking law, it was nice because of the high ceiling.

76
A Mexican/Cuban cantina just opened up in Victoria, but I'd avoid that too (I work near Victoria station, so I'm most familiar with that area).
I've not been at all disappointed with Italian food here.  Chinese is good too, and usually very cheap.

If you are talking about that Loco Mexicano place... again... it's not bad.  Not enough to keep me from craving true Tex-Mex, but it's within walking distance of my flat.

I'm also wondering if you are "talking" about Gran Paradiso.

Not real familiar with Canary Wharf at all, but if he wanders into the City of London by all means check out Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese on Fleet St.  A real Dickens era pub.  One of my favs to take visitors to.

77
I understand that it's in the building that used to house the actual Texas Embassy.

A dodgy tour guide fallacy.

The original Embassy for the Republic of Texas is the building at 3 St. James St.  There’s a plaque on the wall leading into Pickering Place.

The Texas Embassy Cantina is located in the building that was formerly owned by The White Star shipping line (who owned the Titanic).  As far as the food there??  Not bad, but not great.  Decent for American expat comfort food.

The Dome Skeller (the picnic area behind the original outfield fences with a screen in the wall to watch the game)

Climbing into the upper deck to sit in the Red Rooster/Toy Cannon seats.

Straight A free tickets.

Selling programs and making a nickel a piece, then losing my earnings in the candy machine during the game.

Working a Saturday afternoon Astro game then an evening UH football game and watching them convert the field, being amazed that the mound was removed in one piece with an eye-bolt located under the rubber.

Let us not forget Mike Fischlin and Jimmy Sexton

"Smoky Burgess was fat. Not baseball fat like Mickey Lolich or Early Wynn. But FAT fat. Like the mailman or your Uncle Dwight. Putsy Fat. Slobby Fat. Just plain fat. In fact, I would venture to say Smoky Burgess was the fattest man to ever play professional baseball. Of course, he was not always fat; when he was a catcher...he was merely plump, the way good hitting catchers can afford to be.

But as Burgess grew older a curious tendency began to manifest itself...the older he got and the fatter he got, the better his hitting seemed to become, until at the age of thirty-eight Smoky weighed close to 300 pounds and was hitting over .320.

I don't have any idea what Smoky is doing these days (he retired finally in 1967), but I can tell you one thing for sure, he must be an interesting and instructive sight, now that he's been out of baseball for a few years and has had the chance to really get out of shape."

Taveras making the 3rd out at 3rd and either Ausmus taking off on his own or Oswalt missing a bunt or either one of them missing a sign. Whatever happened there, had the Brewers caught Ausmus, the Astros likely would not have scored the subsequent runs that inning.   This isnt the end of the world as they've scored 21 runs in 2 games but it does suggest that some of them are having problems running the bases.

My thoughts at the time were why Ausmus didn't slide going back into first??  OK...  he was obviously safe with the tag up around his thigh standing up, but it wouldn't have been close had he got down.

JD suggested it was as if he conceeded the blunder.

Again... not the end of the world but.....

His defensive lapses were always attributed to playing in the larger expanses of major league ballparks, so THAT portion of his game wouldn't be helped.

The question then becomes how much "instruction" would be available?  I always thought that once spring training was over it was difficult (at the upper levels anyway) to tweak one's game.

Obviously, playing is better than sitting, but I feel that even IF Bagwell plays there will be plenty of PT for 4 OF's as they might use a revolving door for the 3 OF spots and 1B.

Not "really" related, but it reminded me of my favorite Astro fight memory.

Frank LaCorte threw inside to some Dodger.  Batter bows up, looks menacing, and LaCorte throws his glove to the ground and challenges said batter to "Come on!!"

Both benches empty.  The TV focused on the mound, but what I remember most was across the bottom of the screen was Pedro Guerrero backpedaling as little Dickie Thon was ALL over him... jabbing... swinging...

They "dance" off the edge of the screen's view only to return in the opposite direction, Dickie still keeping that coward on his heels.

ahhh.....  Memories.

I have a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom. You weep for our pitchers and you curse the Coards. You have that luxury.

You have the luxury of not knowing what I know: that Pooholes's homer, while tragic, probably saved runs. And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, saves runs...You don't want the truth. Because deep down, in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me on that mound. Understood, but I would suspect that none of us played or coached at that level, with that level of noise.  I'd also question whether you can generalize across the universe of ballplayers.  If you think the noise would not have affected you, it still may have affected Farnsworth (for instance).  Farnsworth was probably rattled for a lot of reasons, but I thaought at the time that the noise was helping keep him rattled.

Well...  put it into a different context.  Think about basketball... in a gym  (my level of expierence).  It becomes the mental part of the game we hear so much about, and yes one CAN zone out the noise.

Those players that can zone it out are successful... those that can't... well.... you get the idea.

Their "decisive play of the game" was Edmonds lay-out catch in the 6th(?).  What the fuck?

As soon as they said that, my wife leans over to me and says, "That was a great play, but there was nothing 'decisive' about it."

They should have put the Edmonds K with 2 on as the decisive play. That was the one that did it for me.

EXACTLY!!!!  It?s creepy that the almost very same conversation went on in our living room.

IF.... one would make the tweak to the lineup... AND I would get a vote...

I'd put Berkman in right, Burke in left, Lamb at first.  Being closer to the dugout in right makes it easier for the bench players to remind Berkman how many outs there are.

Which is when they turn to that oh, so insightful "miked-up" player in the dugout.  I actually learned that pitchers have a difficult time hitting when thrown stikes!!!

FWIW, I like the line-up with Lamb hitting 5th, especially against La Russa as the lefty-righty-lefty thing will have him itching to get out there and brainfuck this thing.  Remember Ray King last year?  He's still there...

My guess on Garner's Game 2 choice was that he didn't want Berkman skating around on that damp left field grass in Atlanta.

For "us" (meaning my family) it is definitely THIS one.

The last time we were all together was that 16 hour evacuation ordeal up US59... now we attended longest playoff game in history together.

Throw in the fact that my wife had on her Berkman jersey AND my daughter was wearing her Ausmus T-Shirt make it..... well..... (insert understatement of the year) very "special".

I'm not sure Scott makes it to second if he leads off w/ that hit.
