• Never ever criticize a player to reporters. That goes for background and off-the-record sessions. No interview is ever really off the record, and Cecil Cooper shouldn't begin to think it is. I don't know that a manager has to lie. He'll have to figure a way around that. But the quickest way for a manager to lose his team is for players to think he's ripping them to reporters.

• Communication. Managers must reach out to all 25 players, preferably every single day. Jim Leyland and Terry Francona are brilliant at this. Craig Counsell told me that when he was the 25th man in Florida, Leyland would make strike up a conversation every single day, usually in front of other players. He wanted everyone to know that all 25 were important.
