Garner pulls Lidge for Wheeler in the 9th. Does this signal a move or not?

If there is to be a move, Qualls should be in the discussion. He's been mowing guys down lately.

However, I don't think a move is imminent.

I think it signals that they're officially past the "we're not worried about Brad" stage to something that involves more than just a furrowed brow.

Lidge got his first "Hold" since before Dotel was traded. I think before the last week or so, Garner and Hickey probably figured they could leave him out there if he got into trouble, and he might work himself out of it. Now, not so much.

In other words, I suspect this means that they still consider Brad the closer for now, but he's on a much shorter leash.

Lidge threw 35 pitches, just 18 for strikes, went 3-2 on Kent before popping him up, issued three walks and gave up an RBI single. Don't know if you have to read too much into that to see that Garner was concerned about him getting the job done in that inning.

Lidge's performance is definitely worrisome, especially the frequency with which people are getting the bat on the ball. Used to be that people rarely touched his pitches.

But I hope that Lidge's problems don't obscure the outstanding job that Wandy and Qualls did: 8 IP, 1 ER, 5 H between the two of them. Tremendous performance when the team really needed one.

Well, if Wheels does become the closer, he's already got an intro song: Journey's the Wheel in the Sky. And while that's playing they can show videos of different wheels--bicycle wheels, semi-truck wheels, a unicycle, a tank. It's almost too perfect.

That said, I hope Lidge can bounce back. But it's getting ugly out there.

i am glad he pulled brad. not only because he needed to can you imagine what it would have done to the morale of the team. the loosing streak needed to end. wandy is the man...

i think it does. my guess is that he goes back into a semi-setup role until he gets straightened ot, Wheeler stays put and Qualls closes. that is what i would do, anyway. if that Clemens boy signs, maybe he can be the closer. i hear he was great out of the pen last year. seriously, that's not a half bad idea if he thinks his arm will stand it.

Lidge is a closer, and a closer's gotta know that your career as a closer is gonna be pretty short-lived if you can't a) hit your spots consistently or b) come up with something new they haven't seen from you before. All closers think they have a) nailed down and will not accept that they do not until you start yanking them out of games.
