Someone listening to the game.....
« on: April 10, 2006, 03:49:05 pm »
MLB Gameday says Schneider singled on a pop up to SS Everett.
Should it have been scored an error or was it not a pop up?

Of course I noticed that they are showing players as being "On Deck" and "In the hole".

Isn't it "In the hold"?

The term is "in the hold".  "In the hole" is probably used by the same people who say "past balls".
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

Well, once you're past balls, wouldn't you be in the hole? Stands to reason.

From Wikipedia: (For whatever that is worth)

  in the hole (1)
On the infield at a location nearly exactly between fielders, used to describe the location of a batted ground ball, or the location a fielder as he runs to try to retrieve that ball. Used most often in reference to the space between the first and second basemen, or between the shortstop and the third baseman. A ground ball hit between second and short is more apt to be described as "up the middle". The term is also occasionally used to designate the space between any pair or group of fielders. In any case, "the hole" is "where they ain't" as Willie Keeler famously stated. Term similarly used in football.
in the hole (2)
Due to bat third in order; batting immediately after the on-deck batter. Presumably derived from card-playing terminology.

Overwhelmingly, references prefer "in the hole". I guess this isn't a use determines meaning crowd.

No, it's a meaning determines meaning crowd, especially considering the term is most often used by idiots who wouldn't know a fruit fly from an infield fly.

I don't admire your blatant idiocy and arrogance.  The correct, and widely accepted, term is "in the hold".  If you and your circle jerk friends want to say "in the hole", knock yourself out, but that doesn't make it correct, regardless of how often you repeat it.

Except there's plenty of evidence that "in the hole" is the predominant term now (even if initially incorrect).

This includes MLB, book titles The Link, and numerous online glossaries, The Link The Link The Link The Link

Edit: I found one reference for hold, and it references hole as synonym

I'm glad to know your internet search skills are intact.  I'm also not surprised that the sum of your baseball knowledge comes from Amazon.com and Wikipedia.

Well, I thought it was "in the hole" for the longest time, but that's because I have crap hearing. Took until I read it written somewhere, and went to look it up. A more interesting question, I think, is "why the semi-prevalence of Navy (?) terms in baseball?" Semi-prevalence may be a bit of a stretch, but: on deck, and in the hold...

Here's another thread where people got in this same stupid argument

Certainly not definitive, but interesting.

For the record, I agree that with all likelihood the term started as "in the hold".

I never heard "in the hold" until today.  That does not make "in the hole" correct, but I never heard or picked up on the "d" at the end.  Of course, it wasn't until the other day that I heard of a "rusty trombone" or knew such an act had a name.

or that the word "chance" can be stretched to mean "only theoretically".  Sure why not, 50 years from now, when Milo says "on disc" and "in the hole" and some kids smirks, "that don't make sense pops", I'll reply "nope it don't."

I'd always heard/said "in the hole".  I think for now on I'll use "in the holed"

I'm going with "in the whole".  Which is both historically and linguistically incorrect.

Too bad we don't play the Indians in interleague this year, or I could also use "Cleveland Steamer." Which is a close relative to the "Pasadena Mudslide."

everyone is correct, it seems. Dickson's Baseball Dictionary says the etymology of the baseball term is from the nautical "hold," which is pronounced "hole" by sailors.

You can still get a "Chili Dog" and if it's not any good follow up with a "Chilean Sunrise."
