REPENTING...
« on: October 20, 2005, 11:29:43 am »
when the 'Stros were 15-30 I emphatically declared to a fellow OWA disciple that there was "no way in hell" this teams ends the season .500.  if you all recall, we were fighting off the Rockies for the worst record in baseball.

well, that is why they play the schedule, and that is why I am a fan, and not affiliated with any baseball organization in any capacity....

congratulations, way to go.  I BELIEVE.

What are you talking about?  Lots of people jumped off and now they're jumping back on, some slinking, and some making a big damn proclamation, who cares?  The bandwagon is fully loaded now.

They interviewed this girl last night on channel 13 and she says, "Let's see if they can finish it!  It's been a long time since Houston has had the World Series.  Let's win it!"
DS Andy Wainwright: You do know there are more guns in the country than there are in the city.
DS Andy Cartwright: Everyone and their mums is packin' round here!
Nicholas Angel: Like who?
DS Andy Wainwright: Farmers.
Nicholas Angel: Who else?
DS Andy Cartwright: Farmers' mums.

The Johnny-Come-Latelys are running rampant. It's absolutely the worst part of any deep playoff run by a Houston-based team. I've actually fielded the following two questions the last two days (and I haven't changed a word):

Why were the Cardinals allowed to send Pujols up to the plate in the ninth inning, but the Astros weren't allowed to send Berkman up in the bottom of the inning?

Why are we playing the White Sox? Why not the Cubs? I love Sammy Sosa.

Of course both of these people were fully decked out in Astros gear last Friday and have those ultra-gay "We Bee-lieve/Honeycomb" signs on their cubicle walls.

its not just this year.. i have been a fan since the dome days.. raised my children the same way..its kinda like the roaches.. hmm excuse me braves fans would crawl out of the wood work and scurry round during the playoffs and never be seen again till same time next year. will be interesting to see how the fan base grows here during the play offs
forever is composed entirely of nows

You guys all know that I kept the faith all year long- arguing with Alkie that we were better than we were playing and then creating and maintaining a shrine to the baseball gods. It's funny how many people saw that shrine and laughed during the summer- but wanted to call and congratulate (as if I did something) about going to the World Series and not losing the faith.

Having established my bonafides on not jumping off this bandwaggon, I must say that some of yall need to lighten up.  For the bandwaggoners out there that just want to be associated with a winner- truly that is ok.  Do you really think they are going to have the same depth and appreciation of this run that you, as a "real fan" have got right now.  No- just let them have their fun in the reflected glory of the Astros- since that is all you have going on right now anyway.

It's great for the team and great for the city and the state in general.  Let them run around and be happy- it ain't gonna hurt you (except for the fact that I don't get to go to the WS b/c I shot my entertainment wad and then some taking my family to Game 5 in H-town).  Still and all, it was worth it, and I don't regret not waiting for the WS- only slightly that the astros couldn't celebrate at home.

Ease up on the bandwaggoners- part of what makes this run fun is seeing people that don't otherwise follow the game get excited about it.  Who knows, maybe this will plant some seeds that will generate into true fandom, and the bandwaggon will be bigger.

At the very least Uncle Drayton will take their money and maybe that means we can afford to continue to put the quality product on the field that you and I "true fans" have come to know and love the past 14 or 15 years when the astros have only finished below 2nd place 1 time since 94 or so.

If there are still among us any who refuse to let go of the notion that there are "curses" in baseball, especially after Boston won the ALCS & WS in the manner that they did last year, surely your superstitious notions are dispelled now that we have the 'stros and White Sox in the WS the FOLLOWING year.

If there remain doubters after THIS unbelievable alignment of Jupiter and Mars in October '05, then I must presume that only the specter of a Rangers/Mariners vs Cubs/Rockies/Nat'spos World Series will finally put those illusions to an end for you.

Of course, I still haven't picked up the free Chronicle that appeared in my front yard the morning of game 3 with Atlanta (and probably won't until the Rockets season is well underway....not that there's anything wrong with THAT).

So... You don't think the Yankees will ever win another World Series? Could be.

Well, I'd LIKE to think that, anyway.

Don't care if they jump around.  Don't care if they get on TV yelling and waving.  Do care if they come into the TZ pretending to know something about the Astros.   Also, not interested in any confessions about how they didnt think the Astros were any good, but now think they're "going all the way".

Exactly. It reminds me of this quote...

"Look, mister, there's... two kinds of dumb, uh... guy that gets naked and runs out in the snow and barks at the moon, and, uh, guy who does the same thing in my living room. First one don't matter, the second one you're kinda forced to deal with."

I'm kinda likin "Big Damn Heroes" at the moment. I was thinking of "I aim to misbehave." but my all time favorite Firefly quote is somewhat obscure, it goes like this "Bwaaah"

I just finished the box set of Firefly last night after the game.

Couldn't sleep.

Precisely, dead on.  And it's real important to me, because as Limey points out "Radio and TV, in general, sucks. Sports broadcasting especially so. Houston radio is gibbering pile of fuckwittery. ESPN has written off the Astros -" So if I read the TZ and it gets clogged up with similar manner of fuckwittery, I got no option for sensible Astros information.

Have the bandwaggoners been in force here?

I seem to think that we've had some Clark's lately posting here, but by and large they have been good Clark's- guys that you can definately tell have read the forum for a while, know what its about, and just now decided to register.

I don't think you will have to tolerate too many of THOSE people here, as even an astros fan is likely to get about a dozen fuck offs for a stupid take, and then will  get pissy and cry for a bit and then leave.

Big Damn Heros would've been perfect if it hadn't been there before we were in the WS, but I think the occasion deserves something new.

What's Bwaah from? And if anyone watched the shows and hasn't seen the movie yet, shame on you.

We've had some very good Clark postings.  I don't think we have too many bandwaggoners though. Probably because we (at least some of us) are so militantly intolerant.  As Barney Fife would say, "You gotta nip it in the bud.  Nip it."  I don't say that like it's a bad thing neither.  The mea culpa posts are especially worthless.

First scene in "Heart of Gold", where Inara walks in on Mal ("Mal, bad. In the latin") cleaning his guns.
