Here's an article from 2008 discussing KBR's propensity for shoddy wiring that had killed - by that date - 12 soldiers serving in Iraq.  With friends like KBR...

Thus completing the hi-jacking of this thread...

To me, this has nothing to do with wins/losses or player development under Mills.  This a ownership/mgmt group putting their imprint on their newly acquired team. Hoe anyone from our perspective can attribute these results is a level of arrogance I cannot appreciate.  If the current regime succeeds, most fans will forgive and forget.  If they fail, this will be viewed with absolute clarity associated with the typical hind-sighted genius we read over at the chron.

The only question I have is about the IM.  Isn't he the guy associated  with umors regarding players turning on him in OKC?

The cynics will jump me for this because obviously Jim Crane is evil, or poor, or evil-poor, but the Astros, provided they can develop talent will be able to afford to keep the talent.  It took the Pyrites 20 years to be competitive because they developed poorly and shipped away nearly every decent player prior to them becoming arbitration eligible.  Also, the Astros aren't going to hire Cam Bonifay in any capacity.  So there's that.

I am not far off from your view point.  Although, I'm in the camp of "the astros SHOULD be able to afford to keep the talent".  Until we see what they will do, I cannot make a conclusion on whether they are going to continue down this path for decades.

“We want to convince people to enjoy the journey with us,” Postolos said.

We want to convince them because they are damn sure not going to do it on their own.

“We’re taking steps each day to move this forward, and we appreciate the support we have.”

This conjures a picture of an old guy in a walker.

For me, it conjured up stories of PT Barnum and his statement "There's a sucker born every minute."

Wandy may benefit by a change of scenery. He seems like a guy that has concentration problems at times and pitching in the current situation may not be keeping him mentally sharp.

I don't see many teams lining up to hand over high quality prospects for a pitcher with "concentration problems".  At best, high-ceiling, low floor types.  Most likely, reliever-type prospects with Houston picking up a hefty portion of the salary.

He could score, and he could rebound.  He was one of my favorite parts of the post-championship era Rockets teams.

Hell yeah.  Although, I wouldn't call what he did on the defensive side as "defense" so much as "assault".  You were going to require a kidney exam after playing against Willis.  All knees and elbows.  But when he and Olajuwon were on the court together, the opponent was not getting any interior offense or rebounds.....

Friggin' Barkley... most over-rated player I've ever seen on the Rockets.

Except he has T-Rex arms and was never a shot blocker. Loved that guy, though.

Wow... Exact same comment came out in a conversation I had with a colleague while discussing Willis as a comparison to Dwight Howard.

He may have looked funny, but he could shoot that 8-10' jumper with dead-eye accuracy.  I give full credit to the short arms.

eta: Kevin Willis reported wingspan of 6'7" in comparison to his height of 7'.

Beer and Queso / Re: Rockets
« on: July 19, 2012, 11:06:50 am »
You can like or dislike Howard all you want.  You can argue the declining importance of the traditional center role in the modern game.  He's certainly not Olajuwon.  He may never be as good as Robinson or Ewing (although I think Ewing was always overrated). That's all fine.  However, Howard is still the best center in the world currently playing.  Let's not go all Kevin Willis on him.

That's not my point.  My point is, 2nd tier players are not going to lead you to a championship even if you give them a max-contract and especially when they have crappy attitudes to go with their restricted skill set.

Beer and Queso / Re: Rockets

Forgive my NBA ignorance... But how much of this is on Morey, and how much is on the owner? My friends in Houston tell me Morey recognized the need to rebuild, but Alexander wouldn't allow them to suck while doing so (sound familiar?), so this unusual route was all that was left. Any truth to that?

Yes, but with one difference.  Alexander has no issues go over the salary cap and paying a luxury tax.  See my comments about the "star gravity" related to players and their willingness to sign as FA's with a team without another star player.  I sound like a Rockets apologist.  I'm not.  I think Morey keeps playing the same strategy and having it blow up in his face.  It won't stop him from trading a handful of players for another late 1st round pick, which no other team wants, in the 1-4 yrs.

Oh, the other thing I dislike about Morey is he has a knack for chasing off good coaches with his roster shenanigans (Adelman).

Beer and Queso / Re: Rockets
« on: July 19, 2012, 09:51:12 am »
I don't really buy into the "star or suck" philosophy.  Sounds like a convenient excuse for justifying mediocre accomplishments, if no years making the playoffs can even be considered a mediocre accomplishment.

As I said, I don't really think that highly of Morey.  But he is very effective at finding complimentary players.  What he cannot do, however, is find a diamond in the rough (at least he has yet to do so).  Also, keep in mind, several of those .500 seasons were de-railed by the never ending injuries to McGrady and Yao.  So not only did they not make the playoffs, or go far into the playoffs when they did make the post-season, it also lowered their chances of landing a top pick/future star.  That said, Morey managed to trade McGrady... so he isn't totally useless.  Not enough for me to say I'm a fan, though.

Beer and Queso / Re: Rockets
« on: July 19, 2012, 09:16:02 am »
I get the feeling that he can identify value at the margins, but really lacks a coherent big picture view.  In other words, his advanced statistics might help him realize the value of someone like Lowry, but beyond realizing player A has more value than player B based on some advanced metrics, he seems lost.

Because those super-stars are falling from the sky, right?

I'm no Morey fan, but finding players who can contribute who are lesser known talents (Lowry, Goran Dragic, Chandler Parsons, etc...) isn't easy.  As much as I dislike his "I'm the smartest man in the room" b.s., he has a strategy to get a star player.  Unfortunately, it involved blowing up his roster for past and future draft picks.

One of the aspects of the NBA I've grown to loath is the gravity of star players.  Some of these so-called star's are 2nd tier players but due to the lack of talent in the league they look like all-time greats (yes, I'm referring to Dwight Howard and Carmelo Anthony).  Howard is, a defensive improvement on Kevin Willis, at best.  That's not a huge knock, but he's not the next coming of Olajuwon, Robinson, or Ewing.  Setting that aside, it's proven that if you can lure a star player to your team, or force them via trade, it will help you land other players.  The byproduct of this development is the loss of league parity the owners supposedly desire while also giving these prima donna "stars" far more leverage than they have earned (i.e. Carmelo Anthony).

And I'm alright with that.  The big reason is that it gives us another top-notch prospect who can hit for power, which we are seriously lacking on the big-league club.  I think Springer's CF ability gives him an edge, without going too deep in analysis.  I remember reading that they were working on some things with Springer's swing.  I don't know if his K issues have been mainly related to missing pitches or being passive aggressive at the plate, but he seems to be doing better (less than 1 K per game over the past 1 1/2 months).

Springer sounds like Mike Cameron, offensively.  Is he anywhere near as good in the field?

The family's statement suggests they do not feel shame at all.  They are excusing his non-action by saying that he felt bad about it (once caught).  That's BS and they should be ashamed.

I hope that Paterno (and the others) hated themselves on a daily basis for what they let happen - and continue to let happen.  For their own sakes I hope this.  If they did not / do not, then they are not even human.

They feel the shame because not one single day will pass without them knowing, despite their defense of Joe Paterno, that the rest of the thinking world holds Paterno in contempt for his actions in allowing this to continue.

This report is just what I expected to have happened. This wasn't just a case of a coverup, it was a coverup that imperiled the lives of fragile and easily swayed and intimidated young men, which is absolutely abhorent. How JoePed (as far as I'm concerned, he's as much a pedophile as Sandusky) could go into a recruit's home and spew the usual BS about them "taking good care of your son" and still look himself in the mirror is beyond me. JoePa was spared by dying at a convenient time, but the accusations put to bed any meaningful notion either that he was a good man or that his legacy should be a good one, despite what his family says.

Which if you think about it, is a far worse punishment.  Imagine the shame they must feel to remain in denial over his complicity in this mess.

Carlos may have been a good player and teammate.  The problem was the ridiculous contract he was under.  I'd like to think this officially ends the backlash from the Purpura era.  Only up from here.

I didn't care about his contract or his lack of hustle face.  As a matter of face, once he was moved to 1B, I saw him as nothing but a positive contributor to this team.  It was not his fault that this team put him in LF with the full knowledge that he is not a fast man.  But as others have pointed out, he caught the balls he could get to and he always tried even if he lacked a hustle face to make that effort more obvious.

It doesn't but how did that someone explain why premiums will go up with more people paying into the system?

It is primarily due to the penalty placed on "cadillac plans".  For most people working in corporate america that still have quality coverage that isn't running them about $1000/mo for a family of 4, their plan will probably fall under this category.  The result is, if you want the same coverage, you the consumer must absorb a greater share of the premium cost or accept the lower level of coverage while having to pay more out of pocket for portions of the care you used to receive under your insurance.

The other possibility is the increased size of the risk pool that insurers use to aggregate and assess cost.   It is a dangerous assumption that by adding more people into a "benefits risk pool" that you reduce the average cost of coverage.  To the contrary, you could very easily increase the average cost of coverage with this change.  Using medicaid or government sponsored high risk pools will not protect you from the overall cost increase.  Do you think the government will just eat the cost of the increase without increasing taxes to pay for it?  Or do you expect healthcare providers to care less about their bottom line?  Or your employer?

Even if the government strong-arms the insurance industry to provide low premiums for high-risk patience, they cannot prohibit the insurers from offsetting this cost by moving it to you and me.  And if they did prohibit their ability to offset costs, how long do you expect insurance companies to remain in business when they can no longer make a profit?

34

SP, have your healthcare premiums ever gone down?

I fail to see how this justifies the government pushing that cost higher.

35
Since I deal with this crap as part of my job, I can tell you for the 180 million or so individuals who have employer sponsored coverage, yesterday was much ado about nothing, unless you were holding out hope that PPACA as a whole would be thrown out.

To my jaundiced eye, it still looks like the plan is to limit employer sponsored medical benefits (60% valuation by 2018) by penalty or tax in order to make a public option more desired.  But so much of the future activity around this is still undefined from a regulatory standpoint, who knows what the actual state will turn out to be.

I have had someone explain it to me that the one guaranteed result of this is that those of us with healtchare now will pay more, in the future, for coverage equal to what we currently have in place. Also, if the other restrictions introduced with this healthcare law proceed, our ability to utilize pre-tax dollars for our health care costs will be further reduced which, in essence, is a net tax increase.

The other thing people in this country don't like is being told we have to pay more for less.

By no means am I loaded.  But I do have flat feet, which mandates quality arch support.  The first few pairs of J&M shoes I owned lasted 10 yrs.  The last 2 pairs barely made it beyond a year.  The quality drop corresponds with the move to China manufacturing.  It's about a price point and profit margin now.  I'm no longer locked in to J&M shoes, as a result.

I've worn Johnston Murphy shoes for the last 15 years.  While I still like their shoes, both for quality and comfort, the overall quality of their shoes below the price-point you linked has gone down dramatically.  It's very disappointing what they have done with their single piece, rubber soled shoes.  The uppers are still quality, but the sole is crap.

It is.  I wonder what he is saying when he says "A few days ago I had Appel with a slight edge over Byron Buxton at this pick; today I think it's more or less even."  Is he saying that based on his sketchy info on something he has no real insight into, that the Astros are on the fence?  Alternatively, is he saying that since the Astros are taking the best player available, Keith Law is on the fence about exactly who that is?

Either way, it doesn't offer much insight.  Just be honest and say: "Here is a summary of all the reports I am aware of, reports from people I've talked to, not firsthand knowledge.  To be honest, I'm not even sure the people I've talked to have even seen the players firsthand.  It could all be second, third, or fourth hand info.  I don't know really.  Actually, I don't really care anyway.  Oh, and by the way, I really have no idea who will take who."

Not that I disagree with your overall statement or not...  Just wanted to remind: Boras has gotten a whole lot more for less (so to speak), and if there is someone who can manufacture negotiation power it is him.

Off the top of my head, Boras can say 'either you sign my guy above slot or I make sure that the HOU 'fan'base understands that you are just Drayton-lite (cheap and have no interest in spending on amateur talent).  That your only interest is in gate revenue.  Blah, blah, blah. He'll certainly have the 'support' of the talking heads... You think if HOU doesn't sign their 1-1 that folks like Pinwheel would EVER let then slide for it, no matter how legitimate the reason?

And if Crane doesn't already know that ownership isn't a popularity contest which he can actually win, then he IS Drayton-lite.

Next year, some pretty decent candidates for DH will make their appearance. Wallace for one. Hopefully the Astros avoid having to go out and overpay for a veteran hitter. Seems like a waste, seeing as how maybe Singleton is the 1b of the future and Wallace can handle the position every once and a while. A right handed DH/1b guy would go well in that mix... like, ahum... a Carlos Lee at a cheaper rate, maybe?

I can see Mills using Buck and Maxwell as his DH/Bench OF platoon.  My dislike of Lee faded when he moved to 1B.  He's much better 1B than LF, in my opinion.

I could close that, bring up another, and it would be screwed up. But if I opened a second, it would be good, and if I then closed the first and then brought up a *third*, it was fine. And then I closed them all, brought up a new one, and it was fine. I cannot even imagine an explanation for that behavior.

You would probably be better off finding a Cygwin user group/chat room for this question.  I'm only vaguely familiar with cygwin and do not use it myself.  The problem is probably related to the changes you made in the .rc files, whether intentionally or unintentionally.  I don't use emacs but I have seen issues where one editor app can cause grief in system flat files.  Pure speculation.  Absent a saved version of the files you modified, prior to change, you may have no choice but to blow away your install and re-install, to reset to defaults.  If you do have saved backup copies, you can copy them back into place and rule that out as a factor.  Interesting question, though....

Whatever it was with Happ last night, isn't the key for me.  Snyder is proving to be a nice addition to this team.  Young teams need veteran "presence", players that are the cliche "Pro's Pro".  The bullpen has it with Myers and maybe Lyons.  The rotation has Wandy, who a few years ago was no different than Happ, if you ask me.  And if I didn't know better, I'd say Carlos Lee is providing a calm, veteran voice to the regulars.

Setting aside my own struggle to maintain interest (I keep tracking back to the AL move, which I do not like), this team plays competitive baseball.  We're almost into June.  Let's hope they keep it up.

Oh, it's shocking all right. I guess I'm bothered by the banality of it all. What was once a slightly sinister shell of potential energy, imagination and creativity is now a whitewashed place to buy a frozen yogurt.

The great American photographer Walker Evans once observed, 'Prosperity is my aesthetic enemy.'

That could be said for most European architecture, don't you think?  What I found impressive was the sheer magnitude of work.  In '88, East Germany was a depressing experience.  It was dirty, run-down, and showed hardly any signs of life outside the ever-present Trabi's (and obligatory polution) driven throughout the communist run country.  To see it circa 2002, even if it's just a fresh coat of paint, is simply shocking.

Well, depends on how you read it.  If his biggest concern is staying on top of the ball, that can be fixed, as can mechanical issues like flying open.  If a team sees really likes the potential of what they envision he could be, he's still a guy you take very high.  The author never dismisses the potential for Appel to be a frontline starter, just that a team that drafts him can't rush him to the big leagues and expect him to reach his potential.

I don't see how you read any ambiguity into that article.  Directly stated, the guy has velocity and that's it.  That's about as negative a statement as you can say about a pitcher considered a "top draft prospect".

On another note,

If anyone believes the Dodgers would have been forced to move to the A.L. as part of the ownership process, they are sadly mistaken.  Astros are Bud's whipping boy.

Which is completely counter-intuitive.  As the more marketable of the two leagues, the Dodger in the AL would have been work $20Billion, easily.  Imagine the cross country rivalry they'd have with the Yankees!  That alone adds $10Billion in value.  These owners are a bunch of amateurs.

I think that's a little harsh. The SS is actually a very good defensive player. He hasn't hit which shouldn't surprise at this point. Cruz has a great arm and has pitched better in recent outings. I agree that most likely neither will stick. They aren't without tools though and I'd love to see them in the Astros minor leagues if they could work out deals with the former clubs.

If Marwin Gonzalez can't hit, there's a pretty fair chance that Houston can work something out with Chicago (original club, before being selected by Boston, IIRC) to put him in AAA.  Houston needs all the depth they can get and a quality, middle-infield glove helps.

Talk Zone / Re: Bourgeois transaction?
« on: March 27, 2012, 08:55:45 am »
Partly, but more that it takes a team to win. One fast guy doesn't mean a lot unless he's Rickey Henderson or a similar player whose tide carries all boats. That's not Boojwah, and the Astros need a flood of talent.

It should be telling to casual observers that Astro regulars are spare parts to other teams.

As much as I liked Bourgois and Bourn, neither is anywhere near the player Henderson was, even later in his career.  Hell, they aren't even close to Biggio.  The beauty in Henderson's game was that he wasn't just fast and very effective at stealing bases, he also drew walks, hit for power, and carried a solid average.  As a leadoff hitters pitchers had to pitch around him or give up what was likely going to be a double.  He would then create havoc on the basepaths like few others could.  Think Craig Biggio in his prime, only much much better.  That is not a knock on Biggio, by any means.    Bourn was a nice player, very fun to watch in Centerfield.  Bourgois was a 4th/5th OF on a good team.

Talk Zone / Re: Bourgeois transaction?
« on: March 27, 2012, 07:18:11 am »
I'm not sure what you mean here, but I'll put my chips on the table:

Steals don't mean shit, unless the frequency and success are far beyond league average. The correlation between steals and wins is very low.

Jason Bourgeois stole bases at a better than league average rate in 2011. For the 31 bases he stole over 93 games, he only scored 30 runs.

Jason Bourgeois was a little better than a replacement level OF in 2011. Right-handed pitching killed him - .219 / .241 / .255.

He had a good first half - .353 / .371 / .422, and a bad second half - .250 / .287 / .309. and he had 11 more starts and 42 more plate appearances in that second half.

The important thing for an offense is to score runs. You accomplish that by getting on base and being driven in to home. Very few players steal enough bases to make a significant positive effect in that equation. Bourgeois stole bases at an 84% success rate in 2011, which is above average and in the realm of positivity, yet his overall contribution to runs scored was minor.

Team speed is important. Overall team speed is likely better in 2012 than it was in 2011.

Getting on base is most important of all. That's the key you should focus on here, not something flashy but meaningless like stolen bases.

In short, it's great to be fast but if you don't get on base enough to use said speed, it doesn't mean jack.

Is that a fair assessment?

Wasn't he playing shortstop at one point too? He's definitely got the athletic ability.

From http://houston.astros.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20120323&content_id=27536450&vkey=news_hou&c_id=hou

Quote
"We've been talking about it for a while," Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow said. "When Paredes was with the Yankees, he started at shortstop and he got moved to second base, and really I was trying to figure out from the time I got here why he was at third base, because he really does have all the skillset and tools to play the middle infield. It sounded to me like the decision was made to maybe accommodate other players who were moving around, like [Jose] Altuve and so forth. Really, throughout the spring we've been debating, 'What's his natural position?'

"He's gifted enough [that] he can play second, he can play short, he can play third, he can play center field. But when you think about his tool set -- his speed, his arm, his hands, his feet, his bat ... the whole profile -- he's a guy that we think could be an impact second baseman down the line. Why delay, really, if this is the ultimate position he's going to play and play for a long time at the big league level? Let's get started on it now."

Luhnow said when you have a player with Paredes' potential, you don't put him at a defensive position based on other players. The Astros have 21-year-old Altuve pegged to start at second base, and former first-round pick Delino DeShields Jr. is also a second baseman.

"You put [Paredes] in the position that's best for him and you let it play out," Luhnow said.

Altuve may not rate as high with Luhnow as he did with the previous Mgmt group... or so it sounds to me.

There are different tiers of penalties.  0-5% over is a 75% penalty on every dollar spent over the cap.  After that, they get penalties plus they start losing draft picks.  5-10% is 75% + the loss of a 1st-round pick.  11-15% is 100% tax on overage plus the loss of a 1st and 2nd-round picks.  15-20% is 100% on overage plus the loss of the next two 1st-rounders.  So, ~$560K is the most they can spend in the draft without losing picks.

Added note:  100K is the most allowed on a pick after the 10th round, to correct an earlier post.

Thanks for explaining this, as I was mostly confused by the new rules.  Now I'm not confused, just baffled by the thought process the players and owners put into this.

"...but wow. $15mil a year for someone who's never hit..."

Methinks you're missing the point here. You evaluate worth based on *your own* criteria and then want to pass that along as the sole criteria and why the Co-ards made a mistake.  Perhaps they did. But what if... just pretend for a single minute here... they, the Co-ards, used a different set of criteria?

Is that fair to say? And the short of it all is this... You're worth what they're willing to pay you.

Are you referring to me?  If so, there's must be some confusion.  I can appreciate why the Cards are paying Molina this kind of cash.  He is a superb 6/7 hitter while providing superb defense (at a premium defensive position, no less) and displays a great knowledge of NL hitters.  Add in that, simply put, there is no other comparable catcher available, and maybe not even in MLB outside of Joe Mauer, (and that's a big maybe when it comes to the defensive side).

Knew I forgot someone. Anyway, if this was 2010 Myers this would be insane. 2011 Myers, on the other hand, was not real good.

I guess I'm not all that shocked by the move.  Myers was, at one time, a power pitcher who has evolved from a thrower to more of a pitcher.  He's not a great "pitcher", but is fairly effective.  He seems to embrace the idea of closing and I think it's a worthwhile option.  An 11mil/yr closer is not unreasonable.  It just might be an opportunity for Myers to add a few more years at a higher pay rate than he'd earn as a starter.

The market for closers disappeared after Papelbon because the available closers were mediocre, not because there was no demand.

« on: February 23, 2012, 07:52:03 am »
If you're going to live in a civilized society, there are certain behaviors that should be observed when it comes to the coffee pot.

1.  When you arrive at the office, and the coffee has not been made, don't bitch and moan.  Make the coffee.

2.  When you do make coffee, just make it normal, according to the directions.  We understand that you may like yours weak, or strong, but don't use 1/4 of the bag for a pot, and don't use 4 bags just because you need a little extra jolt.

3.  The decaf pot is for decaf.  It's clearly marked.  Don't make decaf in the other pots, and don't make regular in the decaf pot.  Believe it or not, decaf is a big deal to some people.

4.  Finally, when you take the last cup, make a fresh pot.  Just because you left four coffee molecules in the pot doesn't mean you didn't empty the pot.

Follow these rules, and the world will be a better place for all of us.

Would you mind running for President with this platform?  I'd vote for you... dead serious.

I want to make sure I understand. You would 'never recommend' a 'perfect resume' because you assume that the person cheated? Or didn't work hard enough?

Or is it that you assume a person with a 'perfect resume' doesn't fit on your team?

If the particular person story about how they got where they are does match your hiring qualifications, but they also have a 'perfect resume', would that disqualify them? Or would they even get the opportunity to interview?

I see the confusion, due to my poor choice of words.  Let me try again, to assure you there was no prejudice involved.   First, everyone gets a chance.  I am not THAT kind of asshole, although admit to being AN asshole.

After the interviews, my boss would ask why I did not choose candidate X, with the perfect resume.  My response was always simple.   A perfect resume (full of clearly stated, off the chart accomplishments accompanied by all the hottest certifications) and a known University degree did not answer all my questions.  It was no coincidence that these were usually the same who were nicely groomed, fit, and pass just about any professional work place stereotype.  Inevitably, the interview would unfold with them really not measuring up to their resume.

When you get down to it, a job is about what you can do either immediately or eventually.  My selections usually had military or tech school background (UNIX engineer work).  They were competent in their area of work but were self-motivated and professional.  They just didn't look the part or have the perfect resume.

Back to the "life isn't fair" comment with regard to the student who worked part time versus the student who didn't.  I will take that student who worked their way through college, and did reasonably well, versus the one that didn't work and did reasonably well.

You're right, life isn't fair.  And you rarely get to focus on just one thing.  That person who worked their way through school usually has a far better grasp on their priorities and what they will and will not sacrifice of their personal time.  In short, there tends to be a whole lot less bullshit about their work ethic.

Reviewing old tests is an effective part of studying one's ass off.  When I was in law school tests from the past few years were generally available, often from the professors themselves.  One would be crazy not review them.

This is not the same as what I am describing.  I'm talking about copying questions when the multiple versions were used for large course enrollment (i.e. thousands of students in the same course, same semester) all questions pulled from the same test bank, and re-used semester after semester (which obviously contributes to the problem).  So, say there were 24 class options.  There was exam question overlap class to class, but no two exams were exactly the same.

will you please tell me what a teacher who is even halfass would give the same test year after year? i sure did not. past test questions are nothing more than study guides.

Sadly, A&M - Undergrad Chem 101, 102 & Acct 104/105.  Both were taught this way.  And agreed, half-ass at best.  That said, there were booming businesses across from campus ready to teach you from past tests, which had a pretty strong probability of presenting the same questions that showed up on the exam.

How is this different than tutoring, buying review guides, not having to work two jobs to go to school so you have more time to study, etc.? Life ain't fair.

I'm not talking about straight up tutoring to understand the material.  I'm not talking about "review guides".  I'm talking about collective efforts to retain past test questions for the sole purpose of passing a test in the future.  This happens in the University and in professional life.

Life isn't fair, no one said otherwise.  But if you ask me who I want to hire, the guy who studied his ass off and only got a B, or even a C, or the douchebag who bought the answers?  I will give you the same answer every time.

I spent the last 5 yrs of my career doing the interviewing for my group.  During that time, my boss asked me repeatedly why I would never recommend the perfect resume or the beauty contest winner? If you can't see the difference I am describing then my explanation would be wasted on you.   But in short, anyone can buy the answers to a test or certification exam.  At some point, life becomes about how you got where you are, not just where you are in life.

Test banks are fair game.  Hiring someone else to do the work for you is a whole different story.

What if you are not among the fortunate that has access to the test bank?  What if you have to have some financial means to join the group which has access to the test bank?

"All" are given the opportunity to be heard, but none like the result.  What follows?  That is my not simple.  Due Process was violated, discrimination charge.  Rarely is it their "fault."

Also add that there are student groups who work very hard to maintain comprehensive test banks of past tests.  This test bank often becomes the basis of study, rather than the course material provided by the professor.  Is this anything less than cheating?  What about those outside "tutor services" that bring in countless students for pre-exam cram sessions where, simply put, the test is taught?

Getting up on my soap-box, I can't help but view these actions as a pure by-product of focusing on the result rather than the process.  That is the world we live in.  You either accept that you are handicapping yourself when you play by the rules (focusing on the process and discipline) or embrace "the game".

I'm not claiming to be perfect but I've done well enough playing by the rules.  I cannot say that it does not bother me watching others pass me in the career advancement line when I know, often first hand, they have used less than honorable means to get ahead.  Twelve years in Corporate America has taught me this and more.  I left to avoid the gravitational pull of such tactics.  I also recognize not many people can find a better work place.  As a result I try not judge those who give in to the cheating or accept it as "the way things work".  It's unfortunate for them, but I have not "walked in their shoes" and cannot know what lead to their decisions.

Talk Zone / Re: Projection/Simulation
« on: February 15, 2012, 10:09:15 am »
WARNING - DON'T READ THIS IF YOU EXPECT IT TO BE ABOUT REAL BASEBALL.

I always get tired of waiting for spring, but I decided to try something different this year.  With all the talk about lineups and simulations and the like, I decided to put together my own personal combination of projection and simulation based on various permutations on the lineup.  I actually ended up with individual stats for 18 batters (plus an aggregate "pitcher" stolen from 2011) and about 10% too many plate appearances.  I am not going to go into too much detail about the methodology, because (a) it is boring, and (b) it is not rigorous enough to stand up to criticism.  It follows loosely a lot of the projection approaches that are more rigorous and I tinkered with it to create a variety of scenarios.  I mostly used variations on the projected lineup Tags posted a few days ago.  I'll post some extracts here, and if I do not get laughed or shouted off the board, I may come back and say something about the pitchers later.

I have the offense scoring about 705 runs in 2012 (compared to 615 in 2011) with both more power (123HR vs 95) and speed (131SB vs 118).  A lot depends on Carlos Lee both playing better than last year and staying with the Astros all season.  Of course, the chances of him doing both are unlikely, since the former reduces the probability of the latter.  Anyway, here are the regulars ...
- Carlos Lee:  .279/.338/.477 24HR 98RBI batting cleanup
- Jose Altuve:  .282/.307/.401 10HR 24SB batting 2nd
- Jed Lowrie:  .235/.312/.393 15HR
- Jordan Schafer:  .232/.305/.304 25SB 143K (and I hope I'm wrong on this one)
- JD Martinez:  .278/.335/.434 15HR 87RBI
- Brian Bogusevic:  .269/.342/.422 10HR 25SB
- Jimmy Paredes:  .268/.295/.384 24SB

I split the time equally among the catchers and they all sucked on offense.  The best showing was 8HR and a .731 OPS for Snyder in 70G.  Bench players of note included Jason Bourgeois (team leading 26SB in 280PA) and Jack Cust (7HR and a .810 OPS in 180PA).  I also could not resist projecting a couple of rookies:
- Marwin Gonzalez:  .228/.267/.316 in 120PA
- Fernando Martinez:  .246/.287/.444 in 150PA

OK - Let the laughter begin.

[duck/cover]So, you're suggesting Bogusevic and Lee hit #1 and #2?  [/duck/cover]

Regardless of the discussion, that's not a correct number or size for London.  That's like saying New York City is just Manhattan.

Well, that's sort of why I included the entire UK.  However, if you want to discard the issues of population density (i.e. the relationship of total population to total area) you are free to do so.  I doubt most voters will do the same.  When it is a significant factor to the average cost to tax payers, I don't see why or how you could.

The one thing I can support, as a commuter, is encouraging car-pooling (currently something I do) as well as implementing and or extending HOV/Toll lanes.

Beyond that, I have not studied it enough to offer anything more than my opinion.  What I would see as valuable as a light rail providing multiple lines of travel inside 610.  Going outside 610 would simply cost too much with too few folks riding.  Just my 2 cents...

What in the heck is pitchability?  It was used of at least half the pitchers on the list.

Brace yourself for a serious response.  I lost it on the same question when this was used to describe Bogusevic's focus before switching to an OF.  What I found was that "pitchability" means learning to use inferior "stuff" to produce strikes.  To me, this meant "nibble" on the strike zone.  But further research led to my understanding that it involved improved control and location of pitches, and not just a lack of "stuff".  Now, whether that is useful or not, I cannot say.  But it does seem to becoming "en vogue" to say a pitcher is working on "pitchability".  After all that, I concluded it is the weeding out process between guys who can pitch (starters), throw for strikes (relievers), and those guys just up there throwing as hard or nasty as they can with no clue where it's going or what it will do.

My only point here was that if they decide to trade them, neither will command much on the market ... certainly not anything to create real "competition" among the best prospects.  I do not see either of them taking a roster spot from Paredes or Altuve.

Someone suggested that Paredes may see time in AAA this year, but unless he really flames out, I doubt it.  What are they going to do?  Lose 106 games or something?  Let him play.

Paredes is also the most athletic player on this team, with the only possible exception being Bourgois.

I see.  So mass transit only works in cities small enough not to need it?

London is a pretty big city.  It's the largest urban zone in Europe.  It's covered by a comprehensive mass transit system involving mainline and local rail systems, subways, buses and trams.  That system is interconnected nationwide with other urban and rural areas.  It's even possible to travel from Lands End to John O'Groats - the furthest two points on mainland Britain - entirely by public transport.  One old geezer even did it for free using his retiree's bus pass.

Just for some perspective:
UK - 80,823 sq mi, population: approx. 60million
Texas - 268,580 sq mi; Population: approx. 21million

ETA:
Houston - 579 square miles; population: approx 2.1million (in defined area)

ETA2:
London - 1.12 square miles; population: approx 11,000 (residents; 330,000 commute to work there).

I know what I'm using.  I know the quality of the picture I'm getting.

I've used both HDMI and RCA cables (component or whatever), and honestly cannot tell the difference.  I know that statement is blasphemous in this high tech world.  I know some folks insist they can tell.  I feel bad for them, they have to spend more money on better TVs.

As for U-Verse, I've had it for the past few years (in two different cities).  I like the service when there are no issues.  Their customer service SUCKS.  Check that, that is not harsh enough.  When I moved, they lost my order not once, not twice, not three times... yes... FOUR friggin times.  When they finally installed my equipment, the install person pulled up my carpet running cables underneath it instead of finding a way to run it behind the way.  I was willing to accept that as workable until I got a $250 bill for the "special install".  The carpet is still not tacked down.  Special, indeed.  Within a day of that bill, I got a second bill for $1000, indicating I had not shipped back my old equipment (which I was supposed to keep until they could no longer find my original 4 orders).  I called to cancel everything despite the fact that my wife and I rely on internet service at home to work.  The retention folks waived all the charges, confirmed they did in fact have our equipment, and told us how to file a claim to have the carpet fixed.

The lesson I learned, you get no help until you threaten to leave for a competitor.  The response Limey got is what I was warned about by Comcast/Xfinity customers.  So I have stayed with U-Verse, but only until I can find a better solution....

Seeing I35 packed from San Antonio to Dallas, or I35 packed in the greater Austin area has always lead me to envision high-speed rail.  That's really behind my curiousity on the subject, and I would like to know why it isn't economical, or why it can't be done economically by the government, or whatever the reason nothing ever happens on that front.

The article just seemed to be another "the government can't do shit" pieces that gave a bunch of anecdotal failures without giving even superficial reasons as to why.  I'd like to know: Are there successful ones?  What are their characteristics?  Why did they work, while these failed.

Just as a suggestion, look into why Pflugerville opted to pull up the old rail that lead from downtown Pville into north Austin (turning it into a hike and bike trail) rather than use it for a commuter rail.  You should find links to the other failure to build a spur line feeding the light Rail system running from Cedar Park into down town Austin.  In short, lack of public support both in use and funding.

Yates stepped on his dick today.  But he's a rookie, and frankly I'm surprised how little he has in his 7 games.  But Jones is in his fifth year in the league, and he's still making rookie mistakes.  He's not any smarter about playing in the NFL than he was five years ago, and he's shown absolutely no improvement in running routes, getting open, or catching a thrown football.  He is a complete and total waste of a roster space.

Jones cannot get open against a single NFL defender, and Kareem Jackson cannot defend a single NFL receiver.  If you have two players at those positions who are just in the bottom quarter in the league (as opposed to the single worst), this is a Super Bowl caliber team.  The amount of talent in the rest of this team is staggering.  It's historic, dynastic...any other superlative you want to use.  Replace those two guys with just mediocre talent, and with your QB back, the Texans have the talent to go undefeated in this league.  I'm not kidding.  Hopefully Kubiak can "coach" his undefeated talent to another 10 wins next year.

I have to give the Ravens credit that whenever Jackson set foot on the field, they went after him. EVERY. TIME.  Jacoby is Jacoby.  I can't understand how he still has a roster spot.

I'm not following.  Why does limiting the signing bonuses of international players lead one to think it is a precursor to an international draft?

Looking back at a summary of the CBA (cited below), it appears that shitty teams are given a bigger international bonus pool than good teams.  Presumably, that will also apply to the draft.  For example, the 1st pick will get way more than the 30th pick, requiring the Astros to use way more in the draft than the good clubs.

http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20111122&content_id=26026776&vkey=news_mlb&c_id=mlb

Because the top international players, available to the highest bidder, have been targeted by the richer clubs.  The mid-market and small market teams are only involved in the second-tier of international players.  Similarly, the cap was put in place for the amateur draft is meant to curb the past scenario where top talent is passed over due to signability (read: BONUS size) issues.  The end result is, big market teams continue what some view as an unfair advantage in the drafting of talent.

This is the kind of non-intellectualism among the BBWAA membership that gets to me.

If you are a member of the BBWAA and think Bagwell shouldn't go to the HOF because he just wasn't good enough, okay.  I disagree, but it is at least a valid point from which to begin a discussion.

If you are going to refuse to consider him because of a baseless rumor you choose to believe steadfastly without any corraborating evidence, well, I guess that is your right.  But what does that say about you as a writer and/or as a reasonably intelligent and objective observer of the sport you write about?

You don't want me to answer that.

It's situations such as this (like discussing baseball with Yankee, Cubs, or Red Sox fans) that I try to keep in mind that "fan" is an abbreviation for fanatic.  Most sportswriters see themselves as the "ultimate fan" of the team they cover. The definition of fanatic seems completely relevant at that point:

I think the waters are being muddied a bit around here though.  The best quess at what is going on is: They have a plan.  Correct?  So what they've done is according to their plan, which was understood to be a player development plan (re: five to ten year plan).  That is all good and well (and in large part well accepted).  However, when it's spun in here as an increase in payroll, it smacks a little like the expectation is that they want to be far more competitive quicker and the plan is actually this: Luhlow, wave that magic wand white boy! Get us some hidden talent that no one else sees and bring us back to life quickly!

So is that the "plan" or it the former still in vogue.  Not that this move goes contrary to either plan, it's just that there seems to be an underlying current of "well, maybe this guy really *IS* a magic man!".  IS this what TeamCrane means by "we have a plan"?  Sounds a lot like Bill Murray's plan in Space Jam.

Reducing the payroll is a goal, but only in that it allows resources to be focused on improving the farm system.  I don't see how this move works counter to this goal.  I see this move as nothing more than a buy low, sell high situation which was pointed out by someone else.  Lowrie was no longer the Sox SS of the future.  They signed Scutaro after one of the more recent injuries to Lowrie, making Lowrie expendable.  Houston happened to have a piece Boston wanted, and Boston was willing to give Houston a AAA starter and Lowrie.  Both pieces coming to Houston could improve their value in a situation such as the one Houston is in.  Once that happens, they can be flipped (Lowrie) or become a part of the long term plans (Weiland). Neither was likely to get much of an opportunity in Boston.

I hope Luhnow can find some similar opportunities with other players who don't fit in to the long term plan (i.e. young and under club control for the next 5 yrs) as well as get a positive return for Lee, W-Rod, and Myers.  Actually, I wouldn't mind seeing Myers stick around.... but that's just my 2 cents.

If Luhnow keeps this up, I may find something of interest about the Astros (Bus Riding!!)....

With this understanding would anyone be surprised if one or both were used in a future trade, to build additional depth in talent, depending on the state of the organization?

Sucks to give up Melancon with the bullpen already so weak, but I understand the trade. And it may end up working out well for the Astros. Mills will also be familiar with Lowrie from his big league time in '08 and '09.

Total Devil's advocate here but a late inning reliever's value usually builds based on demonstrated success in tight situations.  The odds of Houston having any significant opportunities to showcase Melancon, I would think, will be low.  Lowrie and a AAA starter, with suspect results in the majors, is a pretty solid haul given Melancon's past performance.

i agree with your basic premise. some stats are useful to demonstrate what guys have done and what skills they have shown. i think both must be used and neither used to the exclusion of the other.

I think this broad approach applies to all situations where analysis is critical.

Some of the comments made by Luhno are opinions/philosophies I share.  He made a statement that scouting and stats are all valuable based on how meaningful you can make it.  However, once you reach the point of decision, you take all the information you have, apply it to the best of your ability, and make a decision.  Once you have made the decision, move forward, do not dwell on past decisions or else you risk missing future opportunities to improve.

Scola is far from the best post defender in the league.  But Gasol is a defensive void.

The point was that they were freeing up room to sign another max player - either Nene this year, or one of the big fish next year like Deron Williams.

So if they acquired Nene and Gasol to man the posts, who plays defense?

I think I just lost any respect I had left for Morey.  Gasol is an all offense (and not much of that, truthfully), no defense PF.  Scola is far more valuable in every way but name recognition.

After Morey ran off Adelman, one of my favorite coaches (Anyone who can find a way to make Kevin Duckworth effective is a genius), I became a skeptic.  With this failed move, I'm not even going to watch any more.

pitch counts may prevent injury in the minors, but they are a direct cause of injuries in MLB.

This part I'm good with.  But it seems to me, the strategy is to distribute the innings, in A ball, more evenly so you can actually assess what you have in a broader sense, versus focusing on the top draft picks.  I can only assume that after A Ball, they separate starters vs relievers with the bulk of the innings going to the starter candidates.

ETA: forget I posed the question... Ferret has clarified everything, with his linked articles.. damnit.

I found this interesting from this interview  https://futureredbirds.wordpress.com/2008/05/09/q-a-with-jeff-luhnow/:

Quote
I see the piggyback/tandem starting is back, not only at Quad Cities but also with Palm Beach. What do you feel the benefits are to the 8-man rotation? How long do you intend to continue with it?

There are two primary reasons why we use the tandem structure at A ball. The first is to spread the innings out among our top pitchers. In both A ball levels, we have more than five guys who we feel need to have innings to develop. When you use a five-man rotation, you can be assured that those five guys will get the needed innings, but what tends to happen is the bullpen innings get allocated to the older, more reliable guys who might not be the top prospects. Managers want to win, of course, so they tend to rely on guys who can win at that level. That is not always consistent with who the organization feels needs to have innings in order to get better.

The second reason is to closely monitor their pitch counts and inning load to prevent injury. Knock on wood, but since we started the tandem approach last year, we have had almost no arm injuries among our starters. This, as we all know, is a key to maintaining depth in our system.

I don't find the pitch count all that interesting, rather the distributing innings to all top candidates to ensure opportunity to develop.  It seems this might give guys who were not the most highly touted of the top prospects having a chance to demonstrate ability.  Specifically, those late round guys who have potential but typically only see relief innings.  Woudl any of the Bus Drivers mind offering their thoughts on said approach?  I'll hang up and listen....

I don't think that's true. It was known at the time that Wade was one of the few, if not only, candidates willing to say that he could win with the team. Then, in his interview after the firing he said "the first two things that I was told was that you have to rebuild the farm system and trade your closer."  http://www.click2houston.com/sports/Ed-Wade-Talks-About-Dismissal-from-Astros/-/1735736/4847986/-/format/rss_2.0/-/138o4ftz/-/index.html

I'm not saying the choice to fire him was right or wrong, I was just interested to hear why you thought he should stay and build. If he was hamstrung budget-wise as far as drafting and development goes, then that's Drayton's fault, for sure. But the only people who know about that are within the organization.

Also, jbm, never said the drafts sucked, Lyles is a nice pick-up and Martinez was a great find. Both seem likely to be MLB regulars. But there's no talent like Hamels/Utley/Howard in the 08-10 drafts unless something shocking happens. I'm not sure what the means re: Wade, I was just pointing it out as a possible issue when considering whether his tenure should continue or not.

One factor which might help you understand my reasoning is if you move away from evaluating Wade, or anything really, based on results instead of approach and process.

No GM has the golden touch.  GMs have strengths and weaknesses, rely heavily on trusted scouts and advisors, and some get flat out lucky in a draftee meeting all the expectations that can be inferred by scouting reports.   Wade build a solid organization in his time in Philly.  He did not get to complete that job in Houston, in my opinion.  I am disappointed, as I said, because I think he was the correct style of GM for the needs of this organization.

His ML roster moves failed in a number of situations.  At the same time, he was not free to obtain the best option.  He was free to obtain the best option for X amount of dollars, where X was far below the open market value. So you have situations like Matsui (when Castillo was his first choice), Bill Hall (when he had no other choice), Shawn Chacon, etc...   He walked into the Tejada trade, orchestrated by an over-involved business side that was convinced "star" players put asses in seats.  The simplest statement I can make in support of Ed Wade is that he made positive progress building talent in what was arguably a very dysfunctional organization (remember the Drew Stubbs fiasco?).

None of those Phillies were drafted during Wade's tenure?

As an aside, I'm so tired of this people proclaiming that his drafts sucked.  How the hell does one analyze the 11 draft or the 10 draft.  Absolute fucking folly.  Hell, even the 09 that got JD.  Castro, Lyles, and Shuck have already made it from 08.  I guess we already know that Castro and Lyles will never amount to average major leaguer.  Same with JD.  DDJ didn't light it up as an 18 year old, so yes, he also has no future.

I'm not sorry to see Wade gone, but proclaiming his drafts as failures is incredibly naive.  No one knows at this point in time.

btw, go compare Wade's 08 to Friedman's 08.

Sure, love him or hate him, it's all the same to me.  He is a builder GM.  He is not the guy you bring in to put the finishing touches on a WS roster.  At least, that has not been his history.

I realized that Ed Wade was under a mandate from Drayton to both "win now" and rebuild the system

This is the flaw in your premise.  You have no idea what the mandate was nor what McLane was willing to pay for.  The only statement that can be made about Wade is that he did his best to field a competitive major league roster with a shrinking payroll (look around, see how that's working for other teams) and declining stars who were eating up the majority of said payroll.

While there are no stars from the Wade/Heck drafts, the system is far better than it was.  Again, accomplished with a reduced budget.

Will budgetary issues improve?  Not likely.  However, Wade is exactly the type of GM who builds up organizations from the ground up (go look up the Phillies org that Wade inherited).  He also tinkers with major league rosters, which is typically the basis for sportswriter/radio show callers bashing him mercilessly.  Could one make arguments for or against Wade?  Absolutely.  But he is very much a "builder" rather than a "finisher" style of GM.

Guy is checking out ahead of me at HEB--he works at HEB and is going home. He's telling the cashier and another HEB employee that his girlfriend is pregnant. The cashier surprises me by asking him, "why didn't you pull it out, you didn't nut in her did you?" He says, "naw it wasn't like that, we wanted to have a kid." Pretty candid conversation to have in public and me literally just trying to buy milk, beer, and diapers. Well, I notice that the guy has an Astros wallet so I figure if he's willing to discuss where and whys of his ejaculations maybe he'll discuss baseball.
So I ask if he's an Astros fan. He looks at the wallet and says, "yeah, yeah I am even though they really suck right now." He's defensive, maybe I am about to say something shitty about the team. I tell him that I love them too and I ask  what he thinks about the move to the AL. He didn't know it had happened. He asks what division they're joining. He thinks its cool that they'll have the Rangers as a rival. Then he tells me how he really feels:" And now we'll have the DH."
I have had many conversations with locals about the Astros. Not one has known or cared at all about the move to the AL. The second most common sentiment is that it will be fun to see them play the Yankees. Of course, none of them will ever actually see one of these games because local Yankee fans will buy the tickets long in advance. The most common response is to change the subject and talk about football.

My problem with U-Verse is signal quality.  Every now and again the TV feed will go through spurts where the sound cuts in and out intermittently for thirty to sixty seconds at a time.

My TV signal disappears entirely.  They test and tell me it's my problem.  Meanwhile, rebooting the box fixes the problem, while no other TV experiences the problem (i.e. I have signal).  Then the other boxes flake out, one at a time.  At no time do I lose DSL or phone.  We had the contractor Technicial come out, he confirmed our cable (which is new, btw) confirm it is NOT our problem, that it is an equipment problem.  The corporate folks insist it is not.  Who would you trust?

I should mention, they lost our order THREE times.  That is not a typo.  Then, they jacked up our carpet rather than install cable on a different wall (which would have been easier than pulling up the carpet) for which I received a $250 bill for "special installation".   They also lost our original equipment, which they had us ship back after enough complaints, and we received a bill for $500 for un-returned equipment.

After a horrible couple years with Comcast, I switched to the same set-up as Andy (DirecTV and dry loop ATT DSL) and was very pleased. I didn't have internet problems with either provider, but the DirecTV television services are significantly better.

I am also moving, but switching to UVerse. DirecTV is letting me hang on to my old box for six months in case I change my mind. If I do go back, they'll treat it like a normal move. No charge for new set up, no new contract. Their customer service throughout couldn't have been better.

Because they know you'll be pissed after the three rescheduled installation dates, lost transfers, etc... that you will experience with Uverse.

Huh?

Boy... not you too?  I think I need to re-read my original post, because what was in my head did not come across clearly.

All I was trying to communicate is that Astros situation is fubar'd.  We have the top candidate which everyone has declared out of reach (Friedman).  We have another top candidate that has withdrawn his name (Levine), increasing the laughing stock probability factor by an order of magnitude.  The only thing that could make this worse is to have the media and commissioner hyped minority candidate who can't seem to land a gig elsewhere, nor does she have experience executing the type of strategy identified by Crane and Postolos (i.e. build from the ground up/player development).  She has worked for the Dodgers and the Yanks, neither of which is known for outstanding player development, albeit better than Houston at this point. In comparison, Crane has identified those with experience in less than idea circumstances achieve positive results.

And if it still doesn't make sense, simply look at the named candidates and compare to Kim Ng.  Would you consider her a strong candidate given the challenges the Astros face?  Personally, I have never found any substantiated reason as to why her name is continually run out there as a candidate.  Yet there it is, time and again.  In comparison, you have the other candidates with clearly defined player development experience and a history of success in similar circumstances.

Take this personal cynicism of mine, add in the allegations of EEOC violations by Crane and Bud's douche-baggery, which to my mind makes a perfect PR story/recipe for disaster type scenario.  If this makes me a misogynist or a chauvinist, so be it.  I have some self-evaluating to do, I suppose.

If Crane lets Bud dictate who to hire to the most important personnel post in his new franchise, Astros fans probably have more to worry about than the person who fills that GM role.  Worrying about whether or not the Astros interview someone you fear is unqualified for whatever reason is probably less enlightening than worrying about why someone who is generally viewed as qualified (Levine) dismissed the chance to interview.

In the original post, the latter was shoe #1.  The Ng candidacy was the suspected shoe #2.  Are we good now?

199
Talk Zone / Re: Thad Levine will not be the Astros next GM

It sounds like the "war of perception" lies more at Ng's feet considering people seem to automatically assume her success is because she is a woman and "token minority."  I guess you wouldn't have the same suspicion if they interviewed a token old white guy?

I understand how you reached that conclusion.  However, I do not share that opinion.  I simply recognize that her name has been inserted by MLB and the media in the past, yet she has never landed a GM job.  Her failure to land the job, despite this effort by others, would eventually support the argument that she is not qualified to be GM, while possessing skills that still make her valuable in other roles.  By no means is this a slight.  There are 30 GM positions in MLB (29 if you exclude Tampa, where it's apparently antiquated) and the competition has to be significant.  Add in any preference for those with past GM experience, and it's a tough market to enter.

As I try to stay on point, I want to emphasize that my focus is on the coerced (at the hands of a meddling Commissioner) PR aspect of considering a female GM candidate by a new owner with EEOC "baggage" when said candidate has none of the key experience background new owner is clearly looking for, i.e. mid-market team with a need to focus on player development.

Tell me where working for the Yankees and Dodgers provided that exposure and I'll concede to opposing arguments.  In the meantime, I'm looking at the stated criteria (Player development etc..) and looking at candidates that surface, along with their history at succeeding at the stated goal (PLAYER DEVELOPMENT).

I hope that resolves the laughably overt bias inferred by others.  Although, I'm not real sure I care if it does nor not.

Isn't she generally considered qualified to be a GM?  What do you have against her?

That's not the point.  It's what skills does she have that make her a better candidate besides being a woman?  There are a number of other potential candidates who have been involved with organizations far more successful at identifying and developing talent than the organizations she was involved with.  Yet, time and again, she is a top candidate according to the press.

I do not know, one way or another, if she is good at what she does or a "token minority".  My only point was that Selig is a douche and as a douche is prone to do, he is likely to look at her candidacy as a PR move.  A "war of perception" tactical maneuver, for lack of a better phrase.  My greatest hope, is that this never comes to be.  That Crane and Co. can find a candidate that fits there description without Selig ever inserting himself.  I am doubtful that Selig has that level of restraint.

Quick question, did anyone NOT see this coming?

At work (in my secret life as a System Administrator), SSDs are changing the storage game in amazing ways.  The technology to enhance the efficiency of leveraging multiple storage tiers in a single environment is awesome.

The difference in drafting philosophy in the AL is that you don't pass on a one-dimensional hitter when you have a top ten pick to get a really good catcher who may or may not hit in the majors.  You can always turn that one-dimensional hitter into, say, a Cliff Lee rental if you're making your way to the World Series too.

Things are going to change, some of it arguably for the better (depending on your own viewpoint as to what is "better").  It makes sense to think hitting first for the first three years or so and then build from that stable of talent into pitching and defense (via trades and free agency) later.

I know there have been a number of threads here that break down the roles within a NL lineup, 1-8.  My initial assumption is that the AL simply adds a 9th hitter, in place of the pitcher, and it's normally a slugger.  However, I cannot help but wonder (or hope) it's more nuanced than this.  Anyone have any thoughts or knowledge of how an AL lineup is constructed?

note: Please tell me it's not equivalent to stacking your Softball League lineup, where they frequently make every other homerun an automatic out.

Keep the hill and flag.  Dig a 3 foot deep, 20 foot wide moat in front of it.  Have foam rocks every couple of feet.  Have some of the rocks be fake and give way if stepped on.

Keep the cows on the foul polls but add animation to them.  Add lighted eyes and smoke coming out their noses. Have these go off everytime an Astro gets a HR or scores a run.

Extend the train tracks to go all around the stadium.  Have the train run constantly throughout the game.  Have a guy throwing candy from the train.

Oh and institute the DH.

Careful, Pam could be reading...

Also, fuck those dirty-hitting Jaguars now more than ever.  I love those "don't move us to LA!" protest signs that probably outnumber the actual people at their stadium.

I realize it's not a stellar option.  But Rosenfels is a better option than TJ Yates.  Otherwise, brace yourself for watching the opposing defense do exactly what Jacksonville did, crowd the box, daring Yates to throw the ball.

On how long it takes to play an American League game vs National League game.

According to this, http://www.beyondtheboxscore.com/2011/5/26/2190937/game-duration-2010-I

in 2010 the average AL West game took 2:45 Minutes.  The average length of an Astros game in 2010?  2 hours 45 minutes.

I am reluctant to share this, because I found it totally disheartening.  However, as I watched the local news (which I rarely do, with good cause), the local Fox News Sports segment was dedicated to three interviews.  The first was the curator of the Astros museum located in Foley's Furniture, site of the original Buf's Stadium.  He was angry, referring to the move as Houston being "buffaloe'd".  Rambling on about the travesty, the outrage at 100+ yrs of national league history in Houston being lost over a business deal.  I can see how most folks would see him as a "crank".

The next two interviewees were at a sports bar (I suspect THIS is Bud's target audience) and they were talking about how the AL is better baseball, it's more competitive, and that the Houston Astros will become more exciting once they move to the AL.  I am paraphrasing, to be fair, but this was the 2 to 1 sentiment FOR the move to the AL.

This leads me to believe that those of us opposed to the move are, simply put, the outliers within the greater pool of sports fans.  Needless to say, I hate populist bullshit...

Someone already mentioned this, I don't see how they don't implement a DH across both leagues.  If they do not, then it's almost a given that rosters will expand by 1 additional player.

As as for a DH Only MLB, I don't know how I would feel about the game.  My initial instinct is it would be similar to watching checkers games versus chess.  AL baseball is not mentally stimulating, the way a NL game can be.

Pork Stew with Red Chilies and Black Beans, from "The Feast of Santa Fe" by Huntley Dent (which is a really neat cookbook, although I have no idea if it's still in print). He uses ground chilies, but I always just soak some anchos and puree them and use that, adjusting liquid as I need to. The pork is cut into 1/2" cubes and browned, and a couple of the interesting twists are adding a tablespoon or two of honey after the meat is browned and adding some cornmeal to the chile puree. It's especially good alongside sweet potatoes of some sort. I can scan in a copy of the recipe if you're interested.

Scan it or PM me... Thanks!

Plus, how do you even successfully pull of switching teams?  I guess you go to dodgers.com and start learning about the history and players.  Then you go to the online store and purchase a cap.  Then you go buy tickets for next season?  That sounds so ridiculous.

There is one question I have for myself, which I have not been able to answer.  While I think I might switch to a NL team, will I care as much as I care about the Astros?  I don't think I can answer this until this whole mess comes to pass....

Hey, it'll suck hard but they'll still be in Houston. They won't be in North Carolina, and you won't have to go to Dallas to see a game in Texas.

My only point of reference was a failed attempt to embrace the Rangers while living in Dallas.  It failed badly.... What they consider good baseball, I compared to the WWE.  Since then, Nolan has brought some legitimacy to that organization.  And I suspect, if he had his way, they would have far better pitching.  My fear, now, is that he will succeed in that goal, along with the improved defense of the Rangers.  If that happens, the only thing that will keep the Rangers out of next year's World Series is the health of key players (Hamilton, Cruz, Andrus, and Kinsler).  They could use an upgrade, defensively, at 1B, but I don't think it's as pressing as better pitching depth.  Damnit, now I sound like a Rangers fan....

I understand being disillusioned. But the Dodgers? The Dodgers? Shit, man, why not the Cubs? They have a new regime too.

You must not have been an Astro fan before the NL Central.

Like I said, I understand disillusion. More than anything else, the Oilers moving killed the NFL for me. I tried with the Texans but I never found any footing with them. Not living in Houston, and growing up as a Packer fan because they stuck it to the Cowboys, I lost touch with pro football and now I'm so lost I doubt I'll ever get it back. Sometimes I regret it a little, but football was always so secondary to baseball for me. I don't know how you could even consider giving up on MLB. I'll be drooling over my Street and Smith's just before I end the show, I'm sure.

I know... old NL West rivals.  All I can offer is that this rivalry is so far in the past, it was the lesser evil of the three options I had so far.  I don't want to turn all Kardashian about it and put it up for a vote.  The two expansion teams in the NL are still in the running, I suppose.  But that felt a little too easy.

As for the NFL and the slow to embrace response to the Texans, you nailed it.  If anything has turned it around for me, based on performance, is the running game.  Tate is a beast and I think he and Foster are going to be fun to watch for a few more years.  Do I think they are going to the Super Bowl?  Uh.. no.  Not until they clean up that secondary.

Gotcha - so you will become an astros fan when they are good (or trick you into thinking they could be good) again.

When did the Texans become good?  Mediocre, sure.  But good?

I realize you are taking my statements to mean I am a front-runner.  A band-wagon fan.  That is your opinion (which means little to me) and you are entitled to it.  However, it was more about being a die-hard Oiler fan, when it wasn't cool, having the team leave at the discretion of an owner who whiped his ass with the City of Houston, and a league that allowed it.  The only exit which compares was the original Browns moving to Baltimore (not to mention the story behind the Ravens moniker).

I was eager to support the Texans from the start... I just couldn't put my heart into it for a long time.  I could not dedicate my Sunday afternoon, rain or shine, to watching their games.  Question my motives all you want.  I don't.

If your fandom runs that thin you shouldn't be here. After the Rulu, of course.

All I can say is that I am finding it nearly impossible to resign myself to supporting an AL Astros team.  I just cannot do it.  I started thinking about teams that I followed as a kid.  The Cardinals (Ozzie Smith), the Pirates, and the Dodgers.  Given the divisional rivalry with the Cards and Pirates, I cannot embrace either team.  I think, with new ownership, I could follow the Dodgers.  The Marlins are a possibility as well.

You are welcome to your opinion, but it's this or forgetting Major League baseball all together.  I am going with the lesser of two evils, at this point.  I did it with the NFL when the Oilers left, rather than jump on the Cowboys bandwagon.  I also didn't follow the Texans closely until the last 2-3 years, as a result.

I didn't know he'd passed on Sandberg.

Duncan has his hands full already, spending time with his wife and trying to help her. He's expressed an interest in coming back as pitching coach but I think he's not expected to want to take on the manager's duties, at least not right now.

I wasn't clear in my statement.  I think Duncan will be available as a pitching coach if the STL mgr is not someone he is familiar/comfortable with.

On Sandberg:

Well, fundamental baseball has always been subject to one undefined and frustrating phenomenon: "A Team on a Roll".  As much as I hate to say it, the Cards are on a roll.  They are, of the two teams, also more fundamentally grounded than the Rangers.  Yes, the Rangers have some strong defensive play at SS and 3B, but not anywhere else.  Everyone else is average or worse.  The Cards aren't much better, but they are better.  Freese is good.  Furcal is better than average.  Pujols (and this makes me nauseaus typing it) is a good 1B.  In the OF, they have a good CF complimented by slugging corner OFs.  And at catcher, Molina is one of the best.

Pitching has been less than impressive this year, although most of the pitching has suffered at the bats of some pretty potent hitters.  At worst, the pitching has been league average.  The fact that it's not "lock down" anything, reflects the talent in the league.

As for last year's proto-type of a Pitching and Defense team, SF didn't have a healthy closer all year.  Their defense declined.  It happens.  Detroit doesn't have the depth after Verlander combined with some pitchers not performing very well against a stacked lineup like Texas.

The one take-away I have, Elvis Andrus is a stud.  No question.

Any markup is to cover overhead (like carrying inventory) and return a profit.  This I have no problem with.  But I see no reason that anyone would be happy that a bank can charge you for something that doesn't cost them anything.  That was the gist of the UK law.  Libertarianism suggests that market forces would correct this, but banks seem to be mostly immune to such things these days, and check-bouncers don't exactly have a powerful lobby.

Libertarian principles rely on an underlying premise of competition.  If all the banks behave in a manner that results is less competition, in concert or not, it counter-acts any libertarian notions.  That IS the problem we have in our financial institutions.  Instead of trying to offer the best service/product to their customers, and thereby drive growth, they are looking at how other entities in the same business manage to bilk their clients using fees for non-services or non-value add items and duplicate the behavior.  It satisfies investors, not customers.  Or in other words, it's the "If they can get away with it, so will we" mentality in place of "How can I do it better?" approach.

Ayn Rand (only mentioned because all the popular Libertarians cite her as their greatest influence) had no concept of this behavior, other than to consider it corruption.  All I can offer is, somewhere along the line, integrity became "quaint".  Personally, I use credit only as a last resort.  I am not so arrogant as to not realize I am fortunate to be able to do so.

I'm not against fees/higher CC interest or for fees/higher interest for that matter.  It's a service that one can use or not use.  However, I think it's fucked up that this is all waived for those with above average income and savings.  They are intentionally fucking lower income people and creating a CC debt death spiral for some.  That's not cool at all.

I get why they do it (have to make money off of every customer, even those that don't have meaningful deposits), but it's still fucked up and should be closely looked at by the CPA.

So you disagree that folks with lower income and savings are a higher risk when using a revolving credit solution such as credit cards?  Don't get me wrong, I think some folks are/were exploited in some areas of borrowing/lending etc...  But the general concept of quantifying risk is based on simple, rational analysis.  Any other factors, like race, are federally prohibited from being a factor.

gotcha.  loved your bicycle rant, for this right here:   The general rule appears to be that bikers get to ignore all the rules that are inconvenient for them and insist that everyone else allow them all the rights of the road that they can imagine.

The wife and I take middle son to football games on Saturday mornings.  The park is located on a road that goes to, and eventually through, the Sam Houston National Forest.  It is only two lanes, really curvy and has quite a bit of traffic - not sure why the Lance Armstrong's of the world choose to ride their own personal Tour de Montgomery County on the sumbitch every fucking saturday.  There is a T intersection with a blinking red/yellow light and a 4 way stop along our way to the fields.  Every saturday I tell my wife I wish a cop would sit at one of the two locations and start ticketing those buzzing through without stopping (they are making right hand turns onto a 12" "shoulder" without even a hint of hesitation).

Also, I am fat and will not be riding a bike anytime soon.

You should have stopped at fat, as that nullifies the rest of your opinion.

Makes me wonder what he's dropped on the laps of the MLB in terms of conditions.  That no one has said "Deal!" means both sides aren't even close in terms of what the final conditions will be.  For now, we're left with "Crane has a reputation that is concerning the other owners" smokescreen so we can think that magnanimity is firmly at work here.

With exception of the anointed and severely cynical, I agree.

Depends on the carrier.  I don't think it will be on Time/Warner, but will be on Dish for instance.

First hand experience with AT&T dropping Astros games (despite the schedule) in favor of Rangers games.  I expect this will be at the heart of Crane's negotiation position.  Curb that, he'll move to the AL.

Also the A's and Angels. Not the same division, but Pittsburgh and Philly are both in the NL. I guess NY would be considered geographically close to two teams in its division, with Baltimore and Boston within 4 hours. Detroit and Cleveland are closer than that.

I don't want the AL move at all, but I think the argument against has to be different from this. There are too many teams already in the same division or league that are within a reasonable drive of each other to say that the Astros would be getting uniquely screwed by it.

So, Houston and Dallas are roughly 240 miles apart.

In comparison, Oakland and Anaheim are 400 miles apart.

Pittsburgh and Philly are closer, at 300 miles, but also in different divisions.  Population density is a question I cannot answer.

The NYC to Baltimore is only 188 miles.  NYC to Boston is 220 miles.  Boston to Baltimore is 400 miles.  All in the AL East.  The key factor here is population density.  Needless to say, Baltimore plays at a financial disadvantage while also having a fuck-wad of an owner.

What do I make of all this?  Eh... not much, other than we're still not comparing apples to apples, as the saying goes.

Yeah if you go here there's a pretty good breakdown of the play and where mistakes were made. There's a field of vision screen shot of Schaub as he pump fakes and you can see Walter posted up. You can also see Dressen come open in the back middle of the endzone, but Schaub had turned his shoulder away at that point.

What I didn't notice watching it live was how Jacoby broke towards the middle of the field which prompted Schaub's throw. Unfortunately he broke back outside as soon as the ball left Schaub's hand. Lots and lots of dick stepping by many parties.

Sitting in the end-zone during the play.  Saw JJ's dumb-shit ad-lib'ing.  Also saw Schaub ignore Walters on a number of plays, along with Anderson (not relevant to final play).  For all the impressive stats this offense puts up, it does not look very polished.  I attribute much of that to AJ being out.  It says little about the team's depth at WR.

ETA:  I have always considered myself an Astros fan first, baseball fan second.  If I had to put my attitude in words, I would say that a move to the AL for the Astros would reverse that order.  Adding, a man without a team doesn't spend money on tickets or licensed fan paraphernalia.  I have no doubt that Selig understands that.  But I suspect he does not think I am the norm, as an Astros fan.  And he's probably right.

Fuck that. It feels like a betrayal to me. I don't mean that Crane is solely responsible, I don't like that he went along with it instead of fighting it out but the betrayal I speak of is that one by MLB and that cocksucker piece of shit commissioner.

When I responded previously, it was before I fully grasped the idea that with this AL/NL league balancing they would have to have constant interleague play.  As a result, the probability of having ONE rule on the DH grew significantly.  I mean, Bud is asshole enough to force one team to play at a disadvantage every day.  However, I don't see how that would be more popular than making both leagues use a DH.  After all, chicks dig the long ball... and dudes dig chicks.
Anyway, with that thought in mind, I don't see how it's a betrayal at the Astros level, as much as it is a betrayal by  Selig to the entire game.

I will try to follow the Astros if they moved leagues but I have never been able to stay interested in the AL style of baseball.  I can't commit to anything else at this point.

The Texans may suck, but they are my Texans.

I don't know what Schaub should have done, but it was easy to see what he shouldn't have done. JJ may not be a AJ, but he is an athletic guy. I can't help but think they had a shot with a quick jump pass, or just let Schaub go for the run. Anything but throw it low into coverage.

The big point is, they had time in the first half to do damage and they quit doing what was working for them. Oakland was begging to be beaten early on. If not for Janikowski kicking from mid-field, they had no offense.

Still, I am going to root for the poor team. OD is son #2's favorite player, and he is the first son to SCHEDULE watching football with me. That is a good thing, and means more than the win or loss, frustrating as it can be.

Now, I have wasted my 5000th post on the Texans. great.

Unless you have some inside contact, like Jim, all we can do is wait for a decision to be made.  Until then, it's all speculation.  Some sources have a better track record.  I have found better opinion pieces on SBNation than on ESPN, SportingNews, etc...

In part what Bizidy said (and WebGuy confirmed), Lurch, but also because Deaton seems to like where they are and has an excellent relationship with a number of his fellow presidents.  He's been standing up to a small but vocal faction of his BOR, one that apparently has demonstrated its influence over the last few days, too, in getting him to agree to at least pursue the breaching option ("demanding" or "ordering" would probably be better choices than "getting").

Of course, no sooner do I post what I did earlier about thinking they'll stay put than the Twit-erverse blows up that MO is announcing that they're out by day's end.   Who friggin' knows?

Goodbye, MO and hello, LOU?  Hardly a replacement, unless you're looking to continue easing that path to the BCS title game for your top guns.

As far as MO to the Big 10, if they were in fact selected by the Big 10, they'd be ranked academically better than just one current member of that conference--the one the Big 10 took last year.  I'm only going by USN&WR, knowing full well there are lots of ways to rate colleges.  Regardless, MO isn't the Princeton of the Plains it makes itself out to be.

I agree that many fans have their identity wrapped up in someone else winning a football/baseball/basketball/whathave you game, yes.  And don't get me wrong...I'm a fan.  I've criticized players, coaches, GMs, owners, etc.  I'm a fan of certain teams, and I excited when they win.  But it's not my life.  Well, some could look at this board and argue otherwise.

I suspect you are not yelling and cussing players or wishing harm upon them.

Unfortunately, this is not a phenomenon isolated to professional or college sports.  My 8yr old played soccer in the spring.  We were graced with a teammate who's parents (mom and dad) felt justified in vocally berating their child's play, constantly.  On the other hand, the coach (professional educator), sent out a non-specific email that all parents should encourage and support their children, adding we all signed a document taking an oath to do as much.  The disruptive parent kept his mouth shut the rest of the season.  Which was good, they didn't win a game at all.  But they did have fun once the parents shut their pie-holes.

Denton is rolling out the proverbial red carpet for the Sooners. The Denton Chamber of Commerce is pushing the schmancy new A-train that we got that will take you directly from Denton to Fair Park and the Cotton Bowl and inviting Sooners to make Denton their "Texas headquarters." I don't begrudge Denton the money it'll potentially make, but... it's the Sooner herd. I might almost rather be subjected to, "Whoo, pig, soo-ie!"

I've read a number of non-fiction works that speak extensively about the 50-60 year long "drought" cycle in central Texas.  The cycle is 50-60 years of declining precipitation, followed by 10-15yrs of steady precipitation.  This cycle was documented going back to the original Mission settlements (250+ yrs?).

The one aspect of the current drought that does concern me is the drought impact in Houston.  I have never read or seen anything that indicates a sustained drought in Houston.  It's obviously possible, but never seen any documentation on the history of weather patterns similar to the current one.

That whole segment pissed me off.  Who gives a fuck what Art Howe thinks about anything?  If he is feels like he was portrayed innacurately in Moneyball, that's his problem.  He had no business rebutting the movie script point by nitpicky point on an Astros pre-game show.  Of course, he had Patty Smith sitting right there, egging him on.  She probably thought she had some kind of big story on her hands.

The whole thing was desultory, just like this whole fucking season.  Howe may have had a legitimate complaint, but he ended up coming off as a small-minded whiner and a monumental bore.

In principle, I can appreciate what you are saying.  However, our pop-centric culture has regressed into one where character assassination is celebrated and considered a demonstration of superiority.  It doesn't matter the medium, be it TV, movies, news (so-called), or books.  Moneyball, the book, didn't portray Howe in a positive light.  But it was made clear that it was Beane's opinion.  I have not seen the movie, and probably won't (although not out of any disdain for Pitt or the content), but if half of what was stated by Howe accurately depicts the content of the movie, it's simply bad form.

These are real people (Howe), who are knowledgeable professionals in their chosen field.  The people making these movies should try to do/be the same.  It's a simple matter of integrity.

I was thinking yesterday that from a big time college football perspective this is all a tempest in a teacup.

That, or it's not over.  I don't know either way.  Needless to say, I am still looking for articles that offer some indication if it's really over or just building up for the next phase.

If I were to speculate, I'd wager a secondary school will move, if anything.  Missouri has some market appeal to the SEC, from what I'm reading.

They can just get cold feet and back out.

Technically they can.  If the borrower is doing everything asked of them, the lender can face litigation for backing out unless they provide an objective explanation.  At least when it comes to home lending.

Just embrace it.  Some change is for the better.

Although I must say as a UT Grad, the bonfire was the thing I admired most about the Ags.  I would venture over there to visit friends on the way back to Houston.  A huge fire with hammered corps people lighting their cigars on the thing was quite a spectacle.

One objection.  In my time most of the folks out there were NOT in the corp.

Yeah, but a few thousand out of 40k (at the time) wasn't that big of a mob.  It's kind of like the Corps, at fewer than 2,000 cadets now being the only thing on camera during games, it's a small piece of the a bigger puzzle, but they were both important to the A&M experience.

But for those two thousand or so, Bonfire night was more than Yell Practice before the UT game.

Here's where we lose what few people are still following this conversation.  I'm not ashamed of being an Aggie, or having attended A&M after I transferred from UT-Austin.  But, and I hate to sound like an old man here, things have changed, even from 1994, when I graduated.  I attribute it to a couple of things: the top 10% rule and the loss of the on-campus Bonfire.

While the stereotype that A&M only draws rural east-Texas kids hasn't really been true since the late 70's, the kids that used to go to A&M did tend to be from more conservative upbringings and tended to really buy into the message of what A&M was supposed to represent.  That hasn't died completely, but the top 10% rule has certainly altered the demographics of the kids who attend.

But Bonfire being gone for 12 years now has had a huge impact on the relationship that students at A&M have with the school and each other.  It was very much a unifying activity for students from every walk of life, and tied individuals to A&M.  Maybe that's silly, and before I attended, I can certainly understand not getting it.  I'm not sure that I can explain it nearly 20 years later, but it's something that was there that is missing today.

Maybe that's growth, and maybe A&M will at some point be solely recognized in the state for being a really strong school academically, and that's what kids should be basing their college choices on at the end of the day.  But that doesn't mean I don't mourn the loss of some of the experiences I had.  On the other hand, I would guess to most college students, I'm an old fuck who doesn't know what I'm talking about anyway.

No need to explain, as I feel the same way.  I gave up trying to explain it a long time ago.  Every once and a while, I try and then remember why I gave up trying to explain it.

I agree. The Aggie student body has changed enormously over the past decade or so. Just a big state school these days.

edit to add: most of our great traditions had to do with the fact we usually sucked and got beat all the time. The idea that people will pick a college based on a winning football team is crazy to me, but they do. The team doing well during the (cheating) Sherrill era and later has brought in a lot of students to A&M who are neither Ag or Mechanical. Or military - the Corps is half the size of the early 80's Corps despite the fact that enrollment has gone from the low 30's to over 50,000.

Next you'll tell me the Greek community has doubled.

We talk a lot of shit about being great fans.  And it's completely true...if the team is winning.  This should be a good year for the Ags.  However, if we stumble or fall against OSU or Arkansas in Dallas in the next two weeks, interest will fall off dramatically.  Unfortunately, I think we split the two games.

I'm hoping for better, but preparing for what I've seen since roughly 2000 until the second half of last year.

WTF.... Admittedly, I haven't gone to a game since I was a student.  But if the game was on, I was watching.  If not, I'm checking scores and chatting with a friend, who has season tickets.  He never mentioned people leaving early.  It's not something you can really spot on TV (probably because they are so busy panning the small section of the Corp and their boot-chasers).

I remember when they changed admissions standards in the mid 90's, when I was there.  It was especially evident when it came to bonfire.  You used to have these country kids who could work all damn day.  Then we got honor-roll students who didn't know what pliers looked like and couldn't understand why you didn't wear gloves on both hands while swinging an axe.

But damn, people stayed through the entire game.  You never leave when your team is on the field.

So, for the record, I didn't mean to stir up all this back and forth.

Jim, duly noted.  I wasn't dismissing the conversation, as I had read Byrne acknowledge the discussion.  What was not clear were the specifics.  I still don't know what value to put on statements of 50/50 splits on costs and 60/40 splits in revenue to UT.  If that was the deal, what a load of bevo sized bullshit.  If it's not true, then all it does is provoke animosity.  Again, no value.  In the end, UT has the LHN and a sweet deal with ESPN.  A&M decided the SEC was a better place to be than in the sizable shadow of UT.  UT had their strategy, A&M has theirs..

To the rest of the points, who cares.  A&M in the SEC, UT in whatever remains in the Big 12.  I just want to see the UT/A&M rivalry played out on the field.  I'm tired of it playing out in the press.  Hell, make it one of your non-conference games and air it on LHN.  It should produce better ratings that UT/Rice.

326
Beer and Queso / Re: A&M to SEC?
« on: September 13, 2011, 04:14:32 pm »
i thought you were asking about LHN $. the network could have been half yours, but Byrne was not interested.

I've read differing takes on this statement so I couldn't give it much value.  Even if it was a 50/50 split between UT and A&M, I don't know how this contributes to a more competitive Big 12.

So, from this, I am inferring that UT simply wanted the LHN and for everything else to continue as before?

327
Beer and Queso / Re: A&M to SEC?
« on: September 13, 2011, 03:52:46 pm »
and why the fuck do you care?

Curiosity I suppose.  I also want to know if UT is going to continue the UT/A&M game.  To me continuing the game with the schools in difference conferences, preferrably strong conferences for both, would only make the tradition that much better.  UT in the Big 12 without OU/OSU doesn't make for compelling competition, in my opinion.

There are some Ags from SWC days who will watch the other schools in the conference and hope they do well, as long as it isn't against A&M.

My comment was purely related to your continued pestering and asking for information (perhaps I should have just stayed out entirely but I didn't, unfortunately).  To me, the palpable sentiment among Aggies is contentment with the SEC and silent excitement hoping to watch the Big XII fall apart while the LHN becomes an albatross that forces UT into an unhappy independence.  Maybe that's just a small sample size of people I'm around; I fully realize that there is a wide variety of Aggie reaction to events as they unfold.

Have you read the crap reporting on the subject?  It makes Pinwheel look like a legitimate news man.  I do acknowledge the ensuing turmoil, post OU announcement.  Prior to that, I didn't see anything happening other than A&M leaving.  Why the focus is still on A&M instead of OU is beyond me.

And the reason I'm pestering for information is because that's why I come here!

I don't know any Aggies that think or hope UT will get screwed by this. Again, our whole reasoning is that UT is so strong and rich they will get what they want no matter what happens, and we need to be elsewhere so we have a chance. There's some antipathy towards Baylor right now for their legal posturing, but I haven't heard anything towards Texas other than speculation about Big 10/Pac 12/Independent status.

Granted, I don't frequent TxAgs or similar sites.

I think you will find much of what he is describing, the "Downfall of UT", on TxAgs.  I don't frequent the site, but was pointed there by some friends.  Seemed like more trash talking than discussion.

It seems that he is hoping that UT ends up somehow screwed in all of this and ATM laughs all the way to their promised BCS title glory and 40 virgins in the SEC.  The cherry on top will be that ATM was the domino that got the whole thing in motion.

I think you are inferring quite a bit with this statement.  I get this from many of the UT Alums I know.  They can't seem to grasp that going to the SEC is about a bigger stage and improvement through better competition.  Everyone points out the risks to A&M, which are legitimate.  All I can say is, no risk no reward.  Of course a move to the SEC comes with risk of failure.  But so does staying in the Big 12.

From my point of view, the move to the SEC is about breaking from tradition, which is rare in the world of TAMU, and facing the challenge of the best college football conference.

Good for ATM for getting what it wanted, but you're delusional if you can't realize that UT will be given every option out there and rightfully so.  Move on with your new conference affiliation.  The faux concern for UT betrays your new independent, SEC badass persona.

I think UT will have many options to choose from, rightfully so or not.  I just don't know which one is their primary goal. One thing to keep in mind is this change, just as it applies with A&M, involves some risk for UT.  Jim seems to have some inside information, which I'd love to know.  I don't have his professional level of interest, obviously.  I do find the situation interesting in how this plays out.

However, in regards to your statements on the whole.  Don't you think you're being a tad bit sensitive?  Given all the Aggie bashing over our wrong-headed, stubborn hick, cry-baby behavior you'd stop for a second and realize it isn't all about the past.  Sometimes it's about moving to a better situation in the future.  That's what the LHN is about, right?  Improving the revenue streams and recruiting platform for UT?  Why is it any different for A&M?  So A&M opted for the SEC instead of a regional sports network.  What's the problem?

very much not so.

You're holding out on me Jim.  I must admit, you are the one who convinced me UT doesn't want to go independent. I'm not trolling here.  I want to understand UT's end-game.  The clearest path I see is total domination of a re-constituted Big 12 that no longer includes A&M and possibly OU/OSU.

So the reports I'm reading indicate none are looking to negotiate that as part of bringing UT into the fold.  It's all speculation, so I won't bother to link.  But if it's true, it's Big 12 or Indie.  This is looking like a bigger cluster with each passing day...

-Pac-12
-Big10 with or without ND
-ACC
-Independent

-All of the above with or without Tex/OU game

I've thought from just about the start that the lawsuit was really a veiled threat to OU to keep them in place.

I don't think you'll find much argument against the lawsuit being used a leverage.  It is fairly safe assumption that the threat was indirectly intended for OU (and therefore OSU as well).  Baylor is hosed.  At best, they are leaching off of UT and OU.  At worst, they are begging for acceptance into the WAC or CUSA.

Sounds about right.  All of this was a non-issue when it was just A&M leaving.  Perhaps what no one else counted on (with the exception of Deloss Dodds, perhaps) is that A&M would not be the only school to leave, forcing Baylor, Iowa, Kansas, and KState to fight for their NCAA relevance by threatening litigatoin.

Combine the 9/2 vow to not seek litigation with previous statements that all nine remaining schools were committed to keeping the BIG 12 together.  Then compare that with OU going public that they (and you have to include OSU by default) are looking at THEIR options TOO and the weaker schools have no choice.

As Andy said, and as a fellow Ag I can confirm, most Aggies are stubborn enough to go ahead and blow the mother up, damn the consequences, rather than be forced in a direction against their will.  I can only assume this goes double for the A&M Regents.

There really isn't much of a reason to play Carlos everyday, but I'd guess that's what Mills will do.

Assuming Lee is not protected by 10-5 rights (which I think we hashed out last year that he is not - given his partial no trade earlier in his contract) then 1 yr of Lee with Houston chipping in $$$ will be more tradeable than before.  To stir interest with another team, he has to play.  That's not to say I think this WILL happen.  But it's enough reason to keep running him out there.

Plus, with more than 1 or 2 other hitters getting it done at the plate, I think Lee is finally starting to see some decent pitches.  I could be (and probably am) wrong but he doesn't seem to be chasing as much.  Hot streak?  No clue.  But there are definitely runners on far more as of late.  That leads to better opportunities, as I understand it.

Yeah, that sounded like a team owner giving the dreaded "vote of confidence" to a coach or manger who's team performing poorly.

I started a response and deleted it.  There's no way to explain, persuasively, the distrust I (as an Aggie) have for Deloss Dodds' doing anything that isn't in the best interest of UT.  Do I think he will take UT independent come hell or high water?  Of course not.  He is far too smart to do that.

As I said, he will work to keep the Big 12 viable until UT no longer needs the conference, i.e. the LHN has major coverage on the various cable network providers.  Once they reach this point, all options are on the table.  I happen to think independent gives them the higher revenue total.

357
Beer and Queso / Re: A&M to SEC?

i doubt he'd be interested in that, and he knows ND will stay independent in football.

Thanks for adding that Jim.  Everything I've seen Dodds' do at Texas leads me to believe he intends to take UT independent.  It seems only logical that UT needs a few years for the LHN to develop agreements with the broadcasters to carry the network.  Given that, UT needs to keep the Big 12 together for the near future.  Once the LHN is totally viable and self sustaining, all bets are off.  If the Big 12 can't be saved, I won't be surprised by a move to the PAC 12.  It's UT's most suitable match.

OU and OSU may follow UT but I don't know if it is their best option.  T. Boone Pickens seems to have quite a bit of influence at both schools.  So if he starts rumbling about one direction or another, I won't be surprised if that's where both Oklahoma schools end up.

Seems like people have just given up on the idea of truth.  A balance of competing squeels is now viewed as a surrogate for the truth.

I'm pretty skeptical of this.  This team (in the near future) is not going to slug its way to wins considering Martinez is the best power hitter on the team and projects at a 25 HR guy.  I don't want to make any sacrifices on defense.

Having read Dierker's book, I never got the impression he placed much value on defense.  So to interpret his thought as one 3B is as good as another doesn't seem that far fetched.  That said, I doubt Smith/Wade subscribe to the same philosophy.

You get everyone not in the hole to take a shovel and walk over  to the mound of dirt next to the hole, and one at a time, add a bit to the hole, so the person stuck in the whole can step up out of the hole as layers are added. Then the person is out of the hole and the hole is filled. And we all live happily ever after. It's so simple.

If everyone would just do their part... including the dude in the hole, of course.  Does that make me a libertarian?

It's not like McLane can just call up the Phils and Braves and be like, "My bad.  I still want to play like a champion today" anyway.  The course is set for the next several years.

That is the beauty of my proposed conspiracy.  Being the hand-shaking marketer that he is, McLane can now blame this unpopular direction on the failed new ownership group! GEEEEEEEEEEEENIUS!

I'm going to throw out a theory with the added qualification that this is pure and unquestionable speculation with no basis in reality.

What if this approval process for Crane is being leveraged to allow McLane to rebuild the club and cut payroll without having to take the head directly?  All of the trades and salary dump maneuvers can be blamed on the "new owner's direction".  After all, the new owner was all but approved, the final decision just a rubber-stamp process (only it isn't!).

It's far fetched... admittedly.

Beer and Queso / Re: A&M to SEC?
« on: August 11, 2011, 12:14:27 pm »
As for the cultural issue, I think the bigger problem for A&M is that they'd be trying to make a name on others' home territory. In the state of Texas, half the people are Aggies and so even if the football team goes through a lull and UT is up, A&M is still big news no matter what they do. I don't know how wise it would be to compromise this stature.

I can't help but think this only demonstrates your bias along with most Longhorns/Longhorn fans.  Before changing jobs, I was traveling semi-regularly for work.  From New Hampshire, Ohio, NYC, Florida, California, Arizona, etc...   Inevitably, during the "get to know your client/acct mgr", I would mention that I was a Texas Aggie.  While there is always the possibility of polite small-talk, most knew more about A&M than simple name recognition.  At first I was surprised, then slowly convinced it was not just polite acknowledgement.

The simple conclusion is, A&M is not necessarily viewed as "the little brother to UT" to those not ingrained in the SWC/Big XII history.

This morning, I've been scanning the internets and their various radio offerings...

Houston radio seems to think this is a good idea.  Dallas and Austin think A&M is being silly.

Common talking notes for both the Austin and Dallas conversations (at least what I've been able to catch):
-A&M will struggle to be better than bottom of the SEC
-Monetarily this is at best a lateral move
-A&M is leaving just to spite and/or get out of the shadow of Texas
-A&M is killing 100 years of tradition
-A&M is easily replaceable

Interestingly enough, Bucky Godbolt was supportive of the move, but he was kind of a lone voice this morning.

Yes... I heard all the abolve last year, when I lived in Austin.  You cannot argue against the perceptions of other people without it turning into a screaming match.

Beer and Queso / Re: A&M to SEC?
« on: August 11, 2011, 08:01:37 am »
big fish/small pond in big 12 vs. small fish/big pond in sec. A&M is the #3 program in the big 12 right now even with its recent struggles, and could win it any given year. in the SEC, A&M would be in the crowded middle of the pack with ole miss, south carolina, arkansas, etc. that and the cultural differences between Texas and the deep south could make the move less than successful.
I can see some truth to your first statement. The simple fact is, the common territory between UT and A&M is well worn.  A&M will never up-root what UT had developed within their shared market.  The LHN simply expands on the financial dominance that UT already has over the Big XII.  I don't think that should be the sole reason to leave, but it certainly is enough to start the conversation.    When you start to look at all the benefits of a move to the SEC, despite everyone's prognostications on whether A&M can compete in the SEC, it is far too appealing to dismiss as a purely reactionary move.

Although, the objections from all the UT folks makes me wonder if they are not somewhat concerned that UT is not quite ready to jump into the "Independent" waters.  And this move by A&M forces that issue.

This move is a long time in the making, and I hope A&M makes the move.  As for the cultural aspect, I think you would need to spend some time in B/CS before you can make that assessment.  Having spent more than a little time in B/CS, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Florida, I am fairly confident that A&M will fit in quite well.

either way, i get the feeling that college football as we know it is about 5 years or less away from blowing the f up. whether it's a playoff that does it or just this megaconference morass, it's seeming more and more like an inevitability.

I have no opinion here.  And honestly I don't care enough to consider forming one.

Yes. Springer was selected 11th overall, so they'd get the 12th pick next year (compensation picks are awarded one spot behind the unsigned pick through the second round). That said, early indications are there won't be a George Springer-like talent on the board at 12 next year. 2011 was loaded.

This is a possibly stupid question, but if Springer doesn't sign, will Houston receive a compensation pick?  If so, where would this pick fall in the draft order?

My thought is, if they get a compensation pick for Springer, they potentially have two 1st round picks next year....

eta: I did research this, and I suspect they will get the #12 pick.  But wanted to confirm.  There is a follow up question:  If both picks are in the top half, are both protected "should" houston sign another team's Type A FA? (yeah, I know I need to lay off the hard stuff...)

It's interesting you mention that. The Orioles, Dodgers and Mets may be poster children for the argument that spending doesn't equate with success, but the Yankees may have made as many questionable signings as those teams put together. They've spent so much money, though, that they've been successful anyway.

The best thing the Yankees have done the past 20 years is develop and retain the services of Jeter, Rivera, Posada, Williams, et al. I've had Yankees fans argue to me that the Yankees aren't just about money, they're also about development. Of course, no other team could afford to retain that core of talent the way the Yankees did.

If you look at the revolving door of starting pitchers earning double-figures with the Yankees who've been a bust, there's been a huge amount of money wasted there. Probably enough money to cover the entire payrolls of lesser teams.

The Yankees are smarter than a lot of the other high-spending franchises, but their main blessing is still their local TV money, and they've made more than their share of mistakes.

Most teams could not afford to pay an aging, limited SS 48mil over three years primarily so this walking team legend could record his 3000th hit in year 1 of the deal.  I wonder what the Yankees will do with Jeter in a year's time?

Oh come on...you're being ridiculous now.

Make that your #1 priority and you'll remain a 100-loss team.

I cannot tell if you are arguing for the sake of arguing.  I'm fairly certain you know that you build a MLB team using a combination of prospect draft/development, Rule 5, waiver claims, trade, and FA signings.  The mixture of players and how they are sourced is irrelevant, as long as you succeed in building a solid core.  There are never ending arguments on how you most effectively build the core of a team.  The Yankees buy their core players, at least in recent years.  The Twins are mostly draft/development focused.  The rest fall in between, often varying their team building approach depending on their window of opportunity given the age of their core players.

So what am I missing that has you so pissed off?  That they traded Bourn and Pence for prospects?  I didn't like seeing them go, but I am of the opinion that both of those players would be too expensive or past their prime by the time the Astros will be competitive.  I guess the models we have to compare to are Pittsburgh, as one extreme, and maybe Florida (I don't know any other example of more effective rebuilding - minus recent years)?

Secondly, I find it interesting that the national media seems to embrace <fill in the GM's not named Wade> deals.  I have concluded that the since the media is completely incapable of analyzing the particulars of a deal, they instead base it on the reputation of the GM.  <fill in the GM's not named Wade> deals are gold and Wade's are crap.

FIFY

I'd also like to add that sports writers are nothing more than glorified fans.  They simply have a much larger soapbox from which to rant.  The size of their forum should in no way indicate a more knowledgable viewpoint nor a better grasp of the nuances of sports GM profession.

As I understand it, Wade was tasked to lower payroll and improve the farm system.  He did both.  There are, without doubt, questions relative to the quality of the prospects acquired (and Schafer).  However, prospects are all about questions, even the sure thing prospects (see Jayson Heywood, Domonic Brown).  There is no denying that nearly ALL the prospects acquired rate higher, relative to their age and minor league level, than any prospects currently in the Houston system.  That's progress, as far as I'm concerned.

Speaking for myself, I get a sense of closure from this past weekend's moves.  At least no one is trying to sell this team as a "contender".  This team is fully committed to rebuilding.  The King is dead, long live the King...

remember John McMullen?

I remember him vaguely.  Perhaps some reference points would help.

I'm not intentionally being prickish about this but I lived in Dallas for years.  And Cuban would not shut the fuck up, ever.  He was on the local news, he was in the paper, he was on the radio.  I understand he's trying to market his team by being the BIGGEST FAN EVER.  I understand what he's doing.  And the type of fan this encourages are the type of fans you all loathe.  They are the perpetual concession stand visitors, the wave participants, and the "our players rulez, your players droolz" radio show callers.  I don't attend many games, but I have not had any issues when I have.  The one time I went to a Mavs game, I had some drunk dumbass spill his beer on me and my wife and another yelling at the players from second tier of the AA Arena.  The last Rockets game I went to was at the Summit, but it was still a somewhat family friendly environment.

Ok, sure, I'll still watch the games on TV.  But I probably won't be sporting my Astros fandom any more.

ETA: On McMullen, his greatest sin was giving up on Nolan, at least from what I recall.  Other than that, I just remember everyone talking about what a cheap bastard he was at the time.  Having a better understanding of the business aspect, albeit from the outside, I didn't put much value in that now.

My instructor had me do a little demonstration about a "short" backswing.  It goes like this:

Take a club and clutch it across your chest like your were doing a warmup stretch; rotate your body until you have turned your shoulders through 90 degrees and hold that position; (this next part is easier if you have a buddy to help you with the club) without moving your body, put the club in your hands and stretch your arms out straight with a wrist cock; Voila!  Full backswing.  It feels a short as Cee Lo Jones, but it's a full takeaway.

Sounds about right.  Got any similar tips for putting?

I didn't say what hits the ball straight.  I only mentioned what generates most of your power.  As for body position, stance, backswing, etc; you can do anything you want.  As long as you can come back to the same point at the time of ball strike(with the clubhead heading in the right direction) you can succeed.  Hence why there is so many swings.  Hence why a man on his knees can strike the ball 250 down the middle.

For example, you can start by taking 3 steps behind the ball and run forward as you swing. As long as you can comeback to the same position at the point of striking the ball, you can succeed.

Also when you are practicing getting your timing down with your wrists, use a short iron.  Takes a lot of the extra variables out of the equation.  As far as swing, I was taught the club should be perpendicular to the ground when your arms are directly behind you and when they are directly in front of you, like the dude in the video had them.

To me, your approach develops a high maintenance swing, which typically produces inconsistent results.  I've only seen very talented golfers succeed with what you are describing.

I used to try this approach, where timing is everything, and it was frustrating.  Eventually, I shortened my backswing, focusing on maintaining balance and a gradual weight shift, and returning to square at impact.  My drives are not only more consistent, but longer because (as sporadic pointed out) I'm making solid contact consistently vs generating clubhead speed and relying on perfect timing.

I get that there's not another bona fide closer on the roster, but hasn't really looked sharp at any point this season.

I don't want to falsely attribute this insight, so I will simply say someone on this site pointed this out some time ago.  All professional athletes operate at a level less than 100% health.  Most likely, Lyon was pitching through the pain like most other pitchers.

A friend of mine, not a US American, remarked that the crowds celebrating Bin Laden's death were, from his perspective, hardly different than the idiots who celebrated the attack. I'm not sure that I would make that analogy myself but I do think that grim business calls for a certain dignity of process all around and that jaunty celebration is not indicated. Once the troops come home, well, I'll be happy to celebrate that as joyously as anyone.

+1

With regard to the celebrations in the US, keep in mind we have cities that have to be put on high-alert after winning a championship in professional sports.  If an event of that nature can turn into a violent and potentially lethal riot, I have to consider us fortunate that it did not occur with this news.

The Marlin series was 1-2, but had the bullpen held together they could have won either of the two they lost.  Starting pitching was at least good, and for Wandy very good (not that that I'd blurt that out during the game).  The hitting was better than I expected.  Defense was better than I expected.  The bullpen is a problem, but the team's come reasonably close to having three more wins than they've got.  I think it's too early to dismiss them.

+1.

I think we'll see them continue the next 6 weeks with the bullpen roster, no changes other than assignment.  If they continue to lose games late, I wouldn't be surprised to see some swapping out with the AAA options.  Where I grow skeptical is whether Wade/Smith will make a trade to lock up that 7-8-9 relief.  JD said it the other night, IIRC, they have relievers who pitch to contact.  When you do that, you will give up hits from time time.

In the meantime, I'm watching to see if Fulchino and Melancon take on more prominent roles out of the 'pen.

I feel the same way about "Dharma Bums."  No, Mr. Kerouac, it is possible to fall off a mountain.

Hasn't Atlas Shrugged become the Dianetics of the Tea Bag movement?

Hijacked is more like it.  The simplest explanation Rand offers involves the example of the legend of Robin Hood.  In the children's stories, it is portrayed as Robin Hood robbed from the rich and gave to the poor.  Rand simply asserts that Robin Hood is simply stealing the wealth BACK from those who stole it originally, returning it to the rightful owners.  So, using this analogy of the Tax Man being a thief, then yes Tea Baggers are Rand Devotees.

I read Alan Greenspan's "Age of Turbulence" where I learned that Rand was Greenspan's personal mentor.  After his tenure as Fed Chairman ended, even he admitted that some of the principles Rand laid out are false/failures.  The most obvious failure is that you can trust businesses to do what is inherently right, to survive.  This failure is how Greenspan views the failure of Freddie Mac/Fannie Mae and the subsequent sub-prime disaster.  They simply did not do what was right to ensure they continued to do business.  Personally, I'd point to the political influence placed on both entities, but that is just me.  From that perspective, Rand's books clearly illustrate how populist/entitlement politics will eventually be the undoing of the USA.

If you've moved beyond your "I'm 19 and know everything" phase, then you probably won't get much out of it.

I'm ashamed of how meaningful I thought it was when I read it my freshman year.

Agree for the most part.  Rand actually spoke to the absolutes she portrays in her books.  Simply put, she wasn't going for realistic, she was going for an "ideal".  She felt the best way to do that was to use extreme examples to illustrate her message.  To that point, I think she was incredibly effective.

Unfortunately, this strategy also shuts off anyone who has an ounce of life experience and compassion, as the examples are completely inhumane.

This is probably just morbid curiosity, but are there any other catchers to come back from an ACL tear and remain at catcher?

ETA:

Question is based on this quote:
Quote
"The recovery for ACL and meniscus is about six months plus conditioning," general manager Ed Wade said. "There's going to be things as a catcher he's not going to be able to do. We're looking at sometime in September before he'll be back playing."

It's taken out of context, so I'm just trying to make sense out of it. Is Castro done as a catcher (because that's how Wade's statement reads)?

They're pretty uppity about their Rangers fandom. Having fled the D/FW area several years back, I can attest to the reaction you describe.  However, with time, I've learned that your Astros fandom declaration invoked a state of shock in the Ranger fan.  See, according to ESPN, and all Dallas-ites listen to Randy Gallo without question, Houston fans don't exist.  So your declaration was equivalent to saying "I'm Sasquatch" or "I'm a blonde that doesn't like enormous hair/sassy bob!".  You get the idea...   My advice, leave the area and don't look back.  DON'T EVER LOOK BACK!!!

I didn't think he was a plus defender, for sure. I can't see the difference between Keppinger and Hall defensively is much of anything though - it's not like defense at second was the big killer.

I'm in need of some clarification, should someone else be willing and able to make sense of this statement:

Quote
SCOUT'S VIEW
Who is more likely to build on their strong finish in 2010: the Cubs or the Astros?

Scout says: "Houston didn't address its defense, which will be a sticking point on the right side of the infield, (or) add anybody with the stature of Carlos Pena, who will hit some home runs at Wrigley. With the addition of Matt Garza, the Cubs' chances are significantly better."

http://www.sportingnews.com/mlb/feed/2011-02/spring-training-2011/story/nl-central-preview-reds-must-hold-off-several-contenders

For the most part, article is straight forward and general.  But the statement that Houston hasn't done anything to address defense on right side of infield is odd to me.  Is Hall not considered a solid 2B? Or is he just viewed as a utility infielder, at best?  If so, that makes sense.   But I thought Hall had earned some credit playing 2B for Boston for an extended period of time.

"an acclaimed broadcaster and writer whose verbal pyrotechnics and moral passion have outraged, informed, and dazzled viewers of Countdown With Keith Olbermann for the past eight years” who is “bringing his slashing wit, analytical eye, and distinctive commentary” to the network.

"Dazzled"?

Here's what Keith, who will also serve as the network’s “Chief News Officer” and will have an equity stake in the company, had to say:

“Nothing is more vital to a free America than a free media, and nothing is more vital to my concept of a free media than news produced independently of corporate interference. In Current Media, Al Gore and Joel Hyatt have created the model truth-seeking entity.”

You know, back when he did real news at ESPN, he was much more entertaining.  Now he just makes me want to punch his face.  But to demonstrate my fair and balanced approach, I get the same feeling listening to Rush, Liddy, Beck, and Mr. Current Affair himself O'Reilly.  They are simply the opposite sides of the same coin.  Maybe we should take this coin , insert it into  one of those novelty devices that flatten and stretch the coin into uselessness.

Egypt's official name is the "Arab Republic of Egypt."  I think its ok to include them in the broad definition of "Arab" as much as that term is useful.

Again, not trying to nit-pick and accepting the fact that I am not communicating my point very well.  I am well aware of their affiliation with the Arab world, in so far as Hosni Mubarak, as well as his predecessor Anwar Sadat, expressed ties to the Arab world. That wasn't my question.  At this point, I'm not sure if my question has any value.  But the simplest way I can put it is, with the middle east dominated by tribal and ethnic loyalties, I'm curious as to how that will factor into the change in Egypt, if at all?

Not to be a wise ass, but Egypt is in N. Africa.  While that may seem like nitpicking, I'm pretty sure that also means that they are not predominantly Arab.  Obviously, I could be wrong.

Sure... but other than Keppinger, which one is a lock?  Maybe it's just me, but a bench of Keppinger, Bourgeois, and Michaels is solid.  Add in a left handed hitter and I'm not sure what else else you can ask for.  It gives you hitting for contact (Keppinger), power (Michaels), speed (Bourgeois), and the lefty (for the sake of diversity) along with some defensive versatility: Keppinger - 2b, SS, and 3B; Michaels - all three OF positions, and Bourgeois - all three OF positions plus 2B (now if only he could play SS, hot damn!).  I'm not saying Bogusevic is a lock but he also plays all 3 OF positions plus 1B.

I am not self employed, but work for a very small business.  I don't think my boss owes it to me to pay my insurance, so I have been uninsured unitil recently (I am on a plan through my wife's company, as it costs no more to add me to that policy than it would without me included).  The little fella's plan was an individual policy through Aetna that I purchased as required by the terms of my divorce.  He has since been changed to the wife's policy as well, as step-children could not be included on that policy until January 1.  I did not cancel the old individual policy, as I did not want the insurance company to deny a claim as a result.  So I am currently double paying insurance to recieve no real tangible benefit.  I am convinced had I gone in declaring myself a cash customer I would have come out ahead.

Gotcha.  Not sure where I got that idea (and didn't want to go back to one of the multiple, extended threads discussing healthcare for that little nugget of info).  I'm not sure what benefits there might be from multiple lines of coverage.  Seems like you could submit the claim to both insurers and see where you come out.  As for the cash deal, in my experience, you are probably right.  Sorry, not much consolation.

If it helps, I just tried to focus on the well-being of my son, when we had that problem.  I think the first year, we were out close to 2k, given how sick he used to get.  Without going into all the details, all of his issues stemmed from easily treatable or preventable issues.  The stomach bug came couple years later, after changing daycares.  A better Pediatrician and a clean daycare that enforced sick policies resolved the other (we had multiple references endorsing the place, too... nothing like a hospital visit to put those in perspective).

I figured that, but it was Christmas Eve, doctor's office was closed.  I paged him and when he called back told me to take him to the ER (and charged Insurance $130.00 for the "visit").  In hindsight, I should have had him call the hospital and admit the little fella, might have been cheaper.  As far as the other stuff...huh??  I did not know I could get meals out of my insurance plan...

kidding, this was an individual policy, since this has happened he has been placed on my wife's work policy.

And most importatnly, Thanks!

The term "cafeteria" applies to the suite of reimbursable accounts that can help offset healthcare costs by deducting payment from your pay check, pre-tax, and then claimed as reimbursement for out of pocket expenses (hence the "savings").  I recall you mentioning being self-employed, so your access will depend on the group-pool you joined (IIRC).

As for the rest of Lurch's update, he's dead on.  If you have insurance and use the emergency room, you are going to be hosed to compensate for all the un-paid care they deliver to those without financial means or insurance.  You can definitely work through the billing process, as he suggested.  It's your best bet, in my experience.  We had similar issues with my oldest son, and we got a similar bill for a 2 day stay in the hospital.

There's nothing you, the doctor, or hospital did wrong.  It's just a byproduct of a screwed up healthcare system where there is no disincentive for those without insurance (or even some with insurance) from relying on emergency care instead of preventative care from the numerous free/low-cost clinics.

You must have a lot more faith in RR-S than I do.  At this point, I see him in the same light as Figueroa, that being a 5th starter/swingman.  That doesn't mean that he can't be more, but I have doubts in his ability to stay healthy and effective for a full season.  Wandy has a much better chance of giving you 190-200 innings with a 3.0-3.5 ERA.  Since he doesn't rely on his fastball's velocity for success, he could still maintain success even if he does lose a tick off of it.  Being 32-34, he shouldn't lose more than that.

The problem with offering Wandy arbitration after this season is that if he accepts, then you lose any kind of discount a multi-year deal would offer.  If he puts up his usual numbers, then he's going to get $13-$15M in arbitration (using Kuroda, Dempster and Lilly as contemporaries).  He could always sign somewhere else and we would get a draft pick, the club just has to be sure he's willing to go and that there will be suitors.

I don't dismiss Wandy's value.  I just recognize that any pitcher, that is as inconsistent as he is, has to be looked at in detail, not just on the sum of his year. Other than 2009, he's never had a consistent year.  Personally, I look at his performance (not just his stuff) and think he's a #2/#3 on a good team.  On the Astros, obviously he's going to be the #2.  Just to be clear, I'm not suggesting Houston should sever ties.  All I'm saying is he's far from untouchable (herpes not withstanding) in trade discussions.

As for Rowland-Smith, I agree.  Between him and Figeroa, you have your plan A #5 starter.  Plan B, I assume, is Lyles (preferably w/ him getting another year of phsycial development and AAA experience), followed by any one else they can find.

I wouldn't try to sign Wandy to a multi-year deal to save money this season, but to keep him around after this year.  If the club thinks he'll continue his level of production over the next 3 seasons, and he'll sign for ~3/$30, it would be smart to do so.  While our position players need to improve/rebound, our ability to win 80 games over the next couple of seasons will depend heavily on our pitching.  Losing Wandy would be a big step backward in that department.

I disagree, for two reasons.  JA Happ and Ryan Rowland-Smith.   Also, at 32 and his performance history, he's exactly the type of Pitcher to be tendered/offered arbitration.  If he accepts, you get a short term commitment to a guy who's never performed consistently.  If he signs elsewhere, you get a draft pick from whomever chooses to sign him.   It's just my opinion, but it's a win/win situation.

Actually, as I read it, he said he worked hard before.  He's doing this new regimen to re-adjust to playing in the outfield.  The ass-hurt of being rejected by the team that drafted you is understandable.  Hopefully it fades with time.

Jeff Pearlman just won't leave it alone (copied from Astros County)

Jeff Pearlman just won't leave it alone
So. Jeff Pearlman appeared on Mike Silva's podcast (link captip to AstroBrit) and reiterated his stance that Bagwell and, yes, Biggio were PED users:

For the record, Pearlman reiterated his position on Jeff Bagwell saying he was “so certain he used steroids from being around that team, era, and researching his Clemens book.” He would go on to tell me that if Bagwell didn’t use then the “world is flat.”When I asked him if Craig Biggio falls into the same category as Bagwell because he played for Houston, a team that he said earlier in the show was hotbed for PED use, he said yes.

Click the link to hear the podcast.

This is beginning to piss me off.

Hasn't Pearlman ventured far enough in his statements where there might be a case of libel/slander to be made?  I mean, as a writer, he's not likely to have a bloody syringe saved somewhere, just in case.

Then you have a very good question, sir. Beats me. I guess lefthanders are guaranteed employment.

He wasn't awful last year, just a spot lefty who could eat some innings here and there for a while.

I saw where someone mentioned WW as being in the situational lefty mix too. Does that mean the starting role experiment is over?

I share your curiosity on WW's future with the club.  Anyone have insight into that?  All I have is inference.  The signing of Rowland-Smith, the Rule 5 draftee, and this trade.  Competition is good, but sure seems like Wright is buried behind new candidates that might be more appealing to Wade/Smith.

Didn't Stephen King hate Kubrick's version of the Shining and throw his weight behind that terrible TV version with the dude from Wings (no, not that guy, the other one)

I'm not a fan of the movie but it definitely captured the creepiness of the book.  There's something about the actress playing the wife that bugs me.

There was a TV version?  Is that like the Dead Zone series with Anthony Michael Hall?

Agreed.  I was thinking Maximum Overdrive, maybe Carrie and Christine.  It's hard to categorize Carrie and Christine given the movies of the same era, but I think they definitely can be described as cult classics.

The movie had no prayer, because the book made me actively embarrassed for King.  I can't believe he actually published that shit.

Other than The Green Mile, I haven't read any King since I read IT in the 7th grade.  Needless to say, I did pick up a couple king books, read a few pages, and put them down.  He's gone a bit beyond predictable.

I liked "Life" but NBC jacked around that schedule, postponing it for what seemed like 6 months, at one point.  Dreamcatcher,  like all Stephen King movies, is more miss than hit.  Having read quite a bit of Stephen King when I was younger, the screenplays rarely capture the action of the book.  It comes across as cheesey and formulaic.  On the other hand, when it works, it's awesome.  Examples of good King movies are Stand By Me and The Green Mile.  Some of his earlier movies are so bad, I think, they have become cult classics.  Unfortunately Dreamcatcher was just plain bad.

The Ags have had poor offense before the in the season, but I haven't seen them pushed around on defense like this. Either they forgot how to play during the break or no one in the Big 12 had a serious offense this year.

The Ag defense has been building on the energy of that OU game.  The delay was a concern.  That said, LSU played bigger, stronger, and faster.  Hats off to LSU.

He never got to explore his sexuality during puberty.  i.e., he was so busy becoming the perfect golf machine that he never sowed his oats.

More like his father was more interested in helping shape Tiger into the perfect golf machine, he left Tiger with absolutely no guide, checks or limitations on his personal behavior.  The end result is a narcissistic bastard.

On that topic, I read an article about Earl Woods in Golf or Golf Digest.  The basic story is the behavior that got Tiger in trouble is exactly the role model his father provided.  Much of the article came from Earl Wood's daughter's perspective, Tiger's half-sister (they have no relationship).  IIRC, the daughter explains that her mother and Tiger's mother knew about Earl's behavior.  The first divorced him, the second demanded he live somewhere else.  It gets more sordid from there.  But the lack of a moral compass seems to be an inherited trait.

That's nothing new.  The strange part to me is that they're playing it at 10 AM on Christmas morning, during the Star Wars marathon.  Parents will probably have to do some awkward explanations!

Do you have children?  I can't let my kids watch shows like "How it's made" or "How do they do that?" on the Science Channel because they also run commercials for "Oddities" and some of their other adult oriented programming.  As an example, the spot for Oddities runs... Customer, "What I have is a jar with a pig in it....  "  Owner "Well, there are many folks who'd be up to eating it..."  at which point my son is asking "Dad, what's in that jar?"   The net spot runs involving a petrified cat carcass.  My oldest (age 7) loves animals and you can see the pain in his face.  "Dad, why would someone do that?"  "Son, I'm sorry you saw that.  I'm afraid that you aren't old enough to understand what some people find interesting.  What's important is that you never unnecessarily harm an animal."

This was also on Christmas day.  Now, we record episodes of these show so we can pre-screen and fast forward through the commercials for my kids.  The content is great, the discretion on when to run advertisement for adult content is/was piss poor.

The most entertaining part of the Favre allegations has been the details that show he has absolutely no game.  I've heard 15-year olds do better.

Eh, "game" is predicated on necessity.  As a big stud football QB, I doubt he ever needed to develop "game".  There's are tons of groupie's who will sleep with him just to say they did. (eta)  His biggest fault seems to be not developing any ability to differentiate a groupie from an attractive woman in his immediate vicinity.

As for the stars of poor character (Manning, Rothlisberger - no one mention him yet?, Vick - on the redemption path reportedly, Steve McNair -shot by his psycho girlfriend, and now Favre) am I the only person making a mental note of thanks to my parents for discouraging me from selecting sports starts as my personal role models?

Mexico has a fine and well established tradition of brewing beer, thank you.

And Germans eat spaghetti like no one else I have ever seen. In a past life I shared a house with a couple, the female was German. For some inexplicable reason they decided to get married and the house was suddenly invaded by 35 Germans. I mean, it was insane, Germans in the attic, Germans in the basement, in the living room, sleeping in the hallway. I opened the fridge one day and found it more crammed with shit than I had ever seen it, specifically freeze dried coffee, cream cheese and hot dogs. When they weren't eating cream cheese and hot dogs they ate spaghetti. You want to know what vessel they elected in which to make the sauce? My wok. I passed through the kitchen one day and discovered them abusing my wok in said manner. I can imagine the look I must have had because everyone burst out in spontaneous laughter without my saying anything.

Having lived amongst the germans, I would venture a guess that was not cream cheese but, rather, schmaltz (I just threw-up in my mouth  thinking about it).  The germans eat pasta or potato with almost every meal I can recall, potatoes usually in the form of pommes frites (french fries).  While the french fries were awesome, their spaghetti sauce is just wrong.

This addition makes for several different options, none of which are bad.  Basically, adding power to SS and 2B, in Barmes and Hall, the Astros can now opt for better defense and less power in RF.  Or perhaps it simply takes pressure off of Wallace and Castro. Having a bench of Keppinger and Michaels would be a very good thing!  Maybe compliment them with Wallace, Bogusevic, or Bourgois.

Based on last year's performance for Hudson, it's not much of an improvement on the year Keppinger had in 2010.  That said, Keppinger hit well above his previous levels against RHP.  </Void driven question>
