Guy is checking out ahead of me at HEB--he works at HEB and is going home. He's telling the cashier and another HEB employee that his girlfriend is pregnant. The cashier surprises me by asking him, "why didn't you pull it out, you didn't nut in her did you?" He says, "naw it wasn't like that, we wanted to have a kid." Pretty candid conversation to have in public and me literally just trying to buy milk, beer, and diapers. Well, I notice that the guy has an Astros wallet so I figure if he's willing to discuss where and whys of his ejaculations maybe he'll discuss baseball.
So I ask if he's an Astros fan. He looks at the wallet and says, "yeah, yeah I am even though they really suck right now." He's defensive, maybe I am about to say something shitty about the team. I tell him that I love them too and I ask what he thinks about the move to the AL. He didn't know it had happened. He asks what division they're joining. He thinks its cool that they'll have the Rangers as a rival. Then he tells me how he really feels:" And now we'll have the DH."
I have had many conversations with locals about the Astros. Not one has known or cared at all about the move to the AL. The second most common sentiment is that it will be fun to see them play the Yankees. Of course, none of them will ever actually see one of these games because local Yankee fans will buy the tickets long in advance. The most common response is to change the subject and talk about football.
