Astros player earns mention on espn.com for something positive
« on: December 04, 2011, 04:35:06 pm »
Quote
Houston Astros second baseman Jose Altuve is in the middle of a monster season with the Magallanes Navegantes in the Venezuelan league.

The 21-year-old Maracay native is hitting .378 with an on-base percentage of .409 through 38 games, good enough to be among the league leaders in average, at-bats, runs scored, hits, doubles, triples, total bases, extra-base hits and slugging.
Woo-hoo! Good news, good times!

Jose better learn better strike zone management, or he'll never hit .300 in the big leagues.

This means he has already walked a total of, like, two times this season.  Woo-hoo!  Yes.

Power is usually the last thing to develop. Give it a couple of years and he'll be Vlad Guerrero.

Well, sarcasm noted, but Vlad-ish power would of course be a welcome add-on to the Altuvian skill set, such as it is.

Even so, I'm betting Mill-sey, were he still around, would continue to bat little dude #1 or #2.  'Cause he's a middle-infielder, you know?  And really, really short.

Does that mean it will be discovered that Altuve is actually two years older than his reported age?

Didn't you hear that we're an AL team now?

According to these stats on astros.com, he's walked 10 times in 42 games, which equates to about 40 in a full season. That's not great, but it's around Tejada/Pence territory. Obviously he'll have to be more selective than what we saw in the majors this year, but maybe he's the kind of player that, with just a little more patience, can manage to hit .320 and eek out a .340-.350 OBP with a shitload of doubles. I'll take that.

Of course, if you want Winter Ball walks, Bogusevic has 27 in 33 games... maybe he should be the #2 hitter next year.

Man, that's sobering. Imagine if they trade Lee (multiple nat'l reporters have "reported" that they're shopping him, so they must really be making a push right now). Does Wallace then bat 3rd? Paredes?? And of course, Schafer is not likely to be anything more than a piss-poor leadoff man...

No, I'm not even saying there's a chance.

This is where we are: The Miami fucking Marlins have a better chance of signing Albert Pujols.

Once they trade Wandy and Myers that team could make a serious run at losing 120 games.

Making history will be a sure fire way to galvanize support for the team prior to making a giant leap into the great unknown, or is I've heard it called the "AL West."

I think 110 is attainable even with Myers, Wandy, and Lee.  I don't even want to think about the team without them.

I hadn't realized he'd gone into double digits.  Another way to think of it -- Altuve already has as many walks this season as some people have 'ignored by' in their posting profiles.

Impressive.

It's hard to lose more than 100 games in a year.  You almost have to try to lose that much.

So in that respect, Mission Accomplished Houston!

And finishing 50 games under .500 is really hard to do. Wade can put that on his resume.
