+1 Too many of these fucking writers are using their HOF voting tickets as platforms to protect some social agenda. They need to tighten the restrictions on who gets a HOF voting ticket. They could tie it to successful HOF votes. In other words, if your nominees consistently don't get a threshold level of voting, then you're out. This would discourage off-the-wall votes for a sentimental favorite player or someone like Jay Bell, who has no business garnering a HOF vote.

I really don't think they think that way. I don't believe they are trying to protect the game as much as follow each other around like sheep. One guy says "bahhh", the other follows right along. Hence why they cannot make a well thought out argument when asked to explain themselves.

The problem is too many of the media types with HOF votes deserve to have their votes stripped.  Gomez is just one example, but there are many others(see Heyman, Jon)  If I ran the Hall, voting would be exclusively done by *gasp* people that played or coached in MLB.  Novel concept, I know.

Don't hold your breath.  There is just as strong a likelihood that some use this to galvanize their stance against anyone they suspect, regardless of evidence.  After all, the BBWAA are the last bastion of defense for all that is sacred in baseball.  That or they are a bunch of dill-holes writing articles from their mother's basement while wearing nothing but their under-wear.

I wish you were right, but I think this is wishful thinking.   For the most part, the BBWAA is made up of older writers that are very stuck in their ways.    Hard to teach old dogs new tricks.

A while back (post Pearlman), I took a look at the BBWAA constitution, thinking this may be a way to 'address' the issue.  LINK

MEMBERS: Duties and Penalties
Section 5:
B: Members shall adhere to the objects and ethics of the Association and shall exercise utmost care in the duties and privileges of memberships.
1. Violators’ memberships shall be suspended automatically by any Chapter Chair or Association Warden for one year dating there from. This offense shall be reported to the Secretary-Treasurer and the card of the offender shall be revoked.
2. Reinstatement after suspension shall, in addition to regular qualification, require payment of annual dues for the period of suspension.

I emailed the BBWAA twice (using my ___law business email address) requesting information, definitions, etc. regarding section 5B (specifically something listing/discussing 'ethics of the Association' and any kind of definitions or 'utmost care'). 

They blew me off completely without even the courtesy of a response...

Yup, village idiots were in part the people in town who just would not shut up and kept pestering folks for information (re: facts). Basically, it was a badge of honor to be a village idiot because you just didn't "get it" right away until every detail was explained to you. Nowadays, it's the opposite, the village idiot is someone who purposely doesn't "get it", but spouts off as if he/she has facts (and doesn't).
