What browser are you using on your desktops?
Ah. Apparently there's a bug with IE compatibility that should be fixed in the next forum update whenever it gets released (should be reasonably soon).
That said, you should know that Internet Explorer is an old, insecure, dying web browser and you should really start using something different (e.g. Chrome or Firefox) if you have any say in the matter.
I'm having the same problem. It works on a mobile device, but never loads on the desktop. I hope that can get fixed.
Please don't call him that.
Mike plays left field for this team and is a goddamn professional hitter.
Apropos of nothing, I was wearing my Astros polo last week and another guy struck up a conversation with me. He said he was a huge Astros fan, bitched a little bit about Hinch in the WS, and then asked me what I thought of the scandal. I said there was so much conflicting info out there, hard to believe what is true, waiting for the full report, etc. Dude launches into a tirade about the people running the team, Hinch and Luhnow should be permabanned from baseball, and that Mike Fiers is a hero for speaking out about it.
Except that when he mentioned Fiers he said, "Who's that guy---Mike 'Fears'?"
Yeah, you know how I know you're not as big a fan of the team?
Which is why it’s really unlikely any player faces serious consequences. It’s gonna be front office, he org and maybe some coaches including Beltran and Cora.
I just feel absolutely sick to my soul about all this shit. Is it accurate to say that there is no evidence of the Astros cheating since 2017? Most all the columns I’ve read are laced with what seem to me pretty blatant rationalizations for the one-sided skewering the Astros are receiving, including that Crane is a war profiteer and Luhnow fucked over Brady Aiken and the Astros are unscrupulous in their zeal for winning—never mind how exactly.
This should be the best time in history to be an Astros fan. I’m pissed at the front office for fumbling the Osuna and then the Taubman issues and sickened and saddened by this whole fucking abysmal shit show that likely wouldn’t have played out this way had they not. What a steaming pile we’ve been forced to watch the best team in Astros history made out to be.
And the silence from Houston is deafening. I imagine they’re under gag orders but Jesus Christ.
OK, here endeth the rant. Sorry. Thanks.

The Astros would have to add more than Reddick (money and/or some other player) to get that done.
I want to believe Beltran too. My disappointment comes from the fact that MLB is not interested in the truth and will not thoroughly investigate. They flat out stated yesterday the goal now is to punish the Astros as quickly as possible, and nothing is off the table, including stripping the World Series title and declaring the Yankees AL champions in 2017 AND 2019. There is talk of banning Hinch and Luhnow for life, and making the players return their 2017 rings. The latter is the most laughable to me. But there is no MLB without the New York Yankees, so they will get to dictate this whole affair. That's just the reality.
No problem with Trout winning.
Bregman had HRs all season. But he didn't really start raking until midseason or so. He puts it together from April thru September and he'll have his MVP.
His contribution filling in at SS was probably underappreciated nationally.
One article today is quoting unidentified GMs as wanting the 2017 WS title vacated.
I truly believe that the Taubman fiasco, especially the lame-ass attempt to discredit the SI piece, left the Astros ass exposed and the media is not holding back with the paddle.
Fine. Just don't stop with Houston. We've been told that suspicions are rampant amongst contenders. Tear back the curtain.
His son got the job because presumably he will be the owner one day. Better he get involved in the business now so he can get the experience and be a good owner if and when that day comes. Let's not pretend this is unique, every owner of every professional sports team has their kids in high positions. It makes sense, if you were Crane and your son wanted to "join the family business" he would be hired the next day.

Interesting about Reid. I wonder the inside story. Nolan Ryan is a world-class jerk who did nothing day to day but lend his name.
He had that terrific season a few years ago. The Astros obviously didn't know the injury existed prior to the deal for him. I don't think we'll know how the Astros feel about him long term until after the contract situation is done.
Crane today appeared to express a willingness to go over it. Hooray! If Cole wants to stay and will compromise of the length of the deal, maybe we have a chance.
Bullshit. The Nationals did not want to win more than the Astros. That's a slap in the face to the Astros. The difference was some balls ended up in gloves and some didn't.Right on all accounts.
I have no idea what this means. We played really good players who were on a roll this time. Cannot explain the difference between the two teams’ performances at home and on the road.
1980 was terrible also. I MAY be over them.
It would have been nice, but Harris was the right move. Freaky bad luck.
Maybe next season some built in substitute starts.
AJ and Luhnow are meeting with the media now.
Of course AJ is hitting all the right notes.
He has to cost a fortune, too, doesn't he?
I have watched the replay several times. The pitch was a cutter down, maybe not a strike. How the fuck did he get the ball in the air.
Don’t overlook the very different circumstances in which the two teams entered the series. The Astros were coming down off the high of the ALCS and fatigue (mental as well as physical) was likely a factor. The Nats, on the other hand, came in completely rested and with an abundance of confidence following their demolition of the Jakes.Don’t overlook the very different circumstances in which the two teams entered the series.
Hopefully, they’re a little deflated having been swept at home. They can’t be happy about coming back to Houston. How they react will be very interesting.
I don't mind the storyline. It's what reporters do and maybe it was his last game. It'll play out with lots of noise and hoopla and odds are what odds are, and I'd just as soon ease into that now than discover it when it happens. I would really hate for him to end up a Yankee though.
Probably because of the storyline I was thinking last night what a special defensive team this is for a pitcher, and that if I were a pitcher looking at leaving the Astros, that's what might hold me. It would be easier to pitch in front of this team than any place else in baseball. Yeah, Cole is great, but at least a bit of that greatness is what's behind him.
Well said. I hope JV has a dominating game left. I hope the bats show up and support him with early runs. I hope the team keeps playing with the intense passion we saw in DC. This will not be easy.
I saw Howard play in Austin more than once with the Victoria Rosebuds of the Texas League. Disch Field (now gone) had a tall 400 foot deep CF fence, and Howard hit a bullet line drive which was still rising when it left the park.
Frank Howard had three or four great years. Not a HoFer but he was very good.
Luhnow didn’t look so good at his PC.

Springer is dead meat if he tries for 3B. Tucker had to hold up at 2B, and I was wondering if he was even going to score. Springer would have had to slow up approaching 2B anyway. It's possible the Nats misplay the throw and Springer makes it to 3B, but you don't make that out at 3B.
Springer could not sleep until he spoke to Hinch about his base running on this play Tuesday night.
Also, "those that know me know I am a progressive" sure sounds a lot like "I'm not racist, I have black friends".
Doubt there will be any more statements though.
Just posted this on facebook, but it applies here too:
On top of not being a who's who of umpiring douchebaggery, this is a pretty good crew. I think the worst in this group is Porter, who has been known to have a bit of a short temper, but compared to the usual suspects, he's amazing.

I swear Correa’s throw was accelerating as it reached Gurriel.
After Brantley's amazing catch, the grass stains on his uniform acted like a green screen for the cameras. When he came up to bat there were silvery patches where it looked like his magic was leaking through.

Sure. Right after she one the arm wrestle.
It’s still a fun ad to watch though.
The Who played at my high school. Opened for The Buckinghams.
Very sorry to hear about your father's passing but what a lovely story. As a youth, I always went to games with my grandfather who lived in Houston. He passed when I was in college, shortly after the '80 NLCS. My father played and loves baseball but was much too busy when I was young to set time away for a ballgame. I went to my first game with my father in July 2017 on his 81st birthday. It was magical and I firmly believe we had a hand in the push to the championship. We spoke on the phone for 30-40 minutes after the last out. He sounded like a kid again.
Long time lurker...over a dozen years but hey, I'll give my first take and try not to be called a neck.
Hinch is consistent in his approach...and players love that about him, they know what to expect. He always gives guys scheduled days off whether they were hot or not or whether they liked it or not. He uses analytics for shifts and sticks with it despite some player's objections (cough, Dallas, cough) and he doesn't put up with disrespect (see ya Giles).
He also never intentionally walked a batter. From a macro level that's what this pitching decision is...essentially we're not going to intentionally walk a game with our bullpen. We're going to go right after you and if you beat us, you tip your cap and move on to the next game.
They would if such a thing existed.
Which tells you all you'll never need to know about Fox's sports priority.
A meaningless Thursday Night Football game ranks higher than the semi-finals for MLB.
Please, MLB, for fuck's sake, sell rights to broadcast your playoff games to a network that isn't run by 3 gibbons in a trenchcoat.
Not surprising, but sounds like its about to be official. And the first thing I think of is "what does Cole think about that?"

Source confirms Joe Maddon is headed to Anaheim to become the next Angels manager.
If tonight’s game gets postponed until tomorrow, I’d flip Verlander and Urquidy in your order. Verlander won’t be fazed by pitching in Yankee Stadium in October, and he’s on normal rest Friday.
This inspired me to dig it out of the vinyl collection. Listening now, with Mingus and Art Blakey in queue.
My sentiments exactly...and I did pay $16.50.
I had a Frito pie chili cheese dog at Minute Maid last night. I am claiming credit for the win.
Anyone who thinks pizza is a sub for Frito pie should be too embarrassed to post it.
The built the most expensive baseball stadium of all time and forgot to put a roof on it. Man, Yankees are stupid people.
Of course that's the one game I was planning on going to - would they make it up Friday?
But, they will get to a third time if they are used that much in relief....
They just need to see the ball and hit the ball. It's simple, right?
I think Smoltz is actually on to something. Think about how many times this year the Astros did nothing through the first few innings and then destroyed the pitching in the 5th or 6th innings after they had seen the stuff a bit. With the way Boone is handling his staff (and same for Cash in the last series), they're simply not getting that third time around against the same pitcher.

This may be becoming a big deal. The Angels’ director of communications supplied Skaggs with the drugs and told the DEA that five other Angels players use. Also said that the team’s former VP - who is now the president of the HOF - knew about Skaggs’s drug use.
Sparks screaming at Harris "you're skanky" and "your wife loves money" as Harris cheerily replied "she loves winning and being a party of this thing."

Thank you, JG.
Every time a pitcher gets hit hard, his (and others’) first thought is “I must be tipping somehow. They knew what was coming.” Well, maybe.
I happen to think it is good baseball to study a pitcher’s grip or mannerisms to determine if he is doing things differently on fast balls and breaking pitches. I did that for three years coaching first base for the Longhorns, and I was able to let the hitters know who wanted to know what was coming. Our first baseman, Bob Snoddy, won the SWC batting title my senior year and gave me credit in a newspaper interview, making Coach Falk apoplectic at this disclosure. One has to be certain when calling pitches for hitters because crossing the hitter up is dangerous and loses his trust in the credibility of the info.
I did this as often as possible coaching HS also. At McCallum in the ‘70s, we faced an outstanding pitcher named Tommy Boggs for three years. I called every single one of his pitches for three years because of a mannerism he had by sticking his tongue in his cheek on curves. He threw very hard, and this helped hitters get ready for his fast ball. Knowing what was coming helped us beat him every time we faced him his sophomore and junior years.
Despite our knowledge, Tommy beat us three times in close games his senior year, including a playoff game. Shoddy defense at times plus bad luck contributed, and our hitters’ knowing what he was throwing was not the deciding factor in these games. Tommy was big, strong, a fierce competitor, and he had improved so much he was drafted second overall in the first round by the Rangers and played several years in MLB for the Rangers and the Braves.
Here is the bottom line on this issue, as Boggs showed us and as Glasnow showed the Astros after the first inning last night: a hitter can know what the pitcher will throw, either by a call from the bench or by watching for the tell, but he still has to hit the ball. Using tipping pitches as the excuse for being hit hard is at least partially valid, but the excuse also denigrates the hitters’ skills.
I agree re Cash. Glasnow too.
Thanks.
Nobody’s ever going to forget this moment.
If you think he’s been that the last couple of years, check again. That was intended as sarcasm on my part and, clearly, I failed miserably. I have been tired of the Kershaw worship since 2017. He seems to still be a good pitcher but he fails in the most inopportune times (if you are a Dodger teammate, coach or fan).

He deserves to be second guessed forever for putting Kershaw in there.

You say "under", I say "over"; why can't we all get along?
I think he was accurately describing his condition, not being ironic. Maybe he was just accurately describing my condition.
Devo AND Peacock out surprises me. That's some serious reliever experience missing from the team.
Seriously? You name one of them "Maverick" and the other one something other than "Goose"?
We probably should forfeit.
Great read, and it makes it apparent that Jim Crane knows baseball and is a perfect complement to Jeff Lunhow.
He might take it to stay and keep the JV/Cole/Greinke staff together.
Get your Worrell button ready. TV announcers for games 1-2 are Kenny Albert, Joe Girardi, and.... AJ Fuckhead.
I can deal with the f'd up start times, but if they delay our game I will absolutely loose my shit!
Two nights in Toronto, one night in Montreal, two nights in Quebec City, two nights in Halifax, all in Great Northern RR hotels (now Fairmont).
Train from Vancouver to Halifax with stops along the way is great.
Also Sabathia got really old and fat. So, adversity.
I've been considering doing that. I assume you'd recommend it? What time of season did you go?
This seems most likely.
Before the collapse Sparks commented that for guys like Miley it can be tough to put guys away with 2 strikes. "Hard to get them living on the edges" or something line- that.
I think it became much easier. If Miley showed any sign of getting outs, it would be different.
It really sucks because Miley was such a pleasant surprise all season.

Just read the GZ on a train from Munich to Paris. So much wailing and hand-wringing. This team will be ready in October.
Urquidy’s excellent start tonight certainly doesn’t make Hinch’s choice any easier. Or maybe it does.
It's entirely possible that Miley makes the roster, but will be used in the pen, not as a starter. I have a hard time trusting him to start a game.
I'd take James and Devo.
Whoa there. I like Toro as much a the next guy, and he's done a good job filling in. But he's not an everyday player in the big leagues, and he's certainly no replacement for Correa.
Gotta be Urquidy or Valdez.
Lately I've been eating mullet every chance I get. I never understood why it's considered a trash fish; the filets are beautiful. Although it doesn't get much respect here, either. It's called 'bobo,' which means stupid.
We probably win in '80 if the Dodgers don't sweep the final weekend. Niekro could have pitched twice in the NLCS.
I only saw one a Colt Stadium-Musial and the Cards won 2-1-but I listened every night on the radio.
+1 And 1980.
1962 for me, which was the season before my senior year in HS. Switched my allegiance from the Pirates to the Colt 45s, and here I am. We are in the Golden Age, and long may it last.
Yeah, 86 stung for a long time. I think the WS in 2017 healed some of that. As well as not playing them often.
Looking back I still dislike some of those players...Gooden, Strawberry...
The Cubs were for a while a team I REALLY rooted against. That had a lot to do with Zambrano, Dusty Baker.
Now my disdain is focused on the Stangers, but mostly because of Odor. Can't stand the guy.
Not unexpected, but I'll sure miss McHugh
Hmm. I thought this was going to be about shoes.
Right now they are in the garage. Mrs. Hawk doesn’t want them in the living room. If I get my man cave (at the house I’ve bought and paid for) they’ll go in there.
He wasn’t going to take on Greinke money either until he did. Nothing said earlier matters now.
Th owner seems hellbent on contuining to win, and is putting his pocketbook where his mouth is. I'm with him.

Yup. I didn't realize the Boston's pipeline is as depleted as it apparently is. Breaks my heart.
In Dombrowski related news...I read this morning where the Sox owners did not show up for the press conference and made Alex Cora have to field questions about why his boss got sacked. If true, that's a cowardly way to handle it.If true, I'm almost embarrassed for them. They owe the fans more than that.
Felix used to be so good. He has aged badly.
I know it's not the question they were asking, but Yuli deserves to be mentioned along with Brantley and Bregman as this team's offensive MVP.
I remember a game where the batter hit a towering popup right behind 1B. The first baseman was trying to get under it, and you could tell was having trouble with the sun. Our second baseman kept yelling "back...back...back...back" and the first baseman kept moving back towards the outfield. He was still back peddling when the ball landed about five feet in front of him, at which point our second baseman yelled "too much".
Another reliever? How many do they need? Nine for each game?
Glad Giles was in Toronto to pitch to Toro.
What do we need to know about him?
BR called him #10 prospect.more from astrosfuture
I like how almost everyone had a negative reaction to the unis. I hope next year they bust out the dots and stripes.Next year? Does anyone look forward to this? Can we just move on?
Greinke
I've seen a lot of reporters sharing this story and their thoughts on it. Still waiting to see one dig to find out what the actual beef was.
The Astros are calling up Toro to help with the infield. He's not on the 40 man, so corresponding moves should be interesting.
My current favorite meal in Austin. I typically eat there at least every 2-3 weeks.
Abraham Toro, the quondam Quebecois, is duplicating Rojas' success at AAA looking to move past Tucker on the prospect list.
.429/.571/1.071 and a .500 OBP in 15 games.
All I know is that I was wrong about Correa. I thought that we had the next A-Rod. Wellsir, he's not even in the same stratosphere with A Rod. Good player? Yes. All Star. If healthy, maybe. There are better shortstops in the game, e.g., Lindor. And then this injury crap. Untouchable? Definitely not. Sell high. But sell.
The correct response would have been "okie-dokie artichokie".
There was a place called Leslie's Chicken Shack in Waco (long before my time here) that is still revered by the locals (though it has long since closed). No idea if it was connected to Shep's.
Speaking of chicken in Corpus, Vietnam Restaurant on Water Street is a superb restaurant. Their roasted chicken is one of the best I've ever had (and their salt and pepper fried chicken is really good too). I've been several times and everything I've ordered there was outstanding.

Poor Sneed has been called up and sent back down twice in the last 4 days.
CFA wins on customer service and overall presentation, no doubt. An acquaintance of my wife's was trying to start a CFA franchise and corporate has some really strict requirements for would-be franchisees. They won't let just anyone start one up because they want the experience to be consistent. That's why every CFA you walk into is well kept.
But they've become victims of their own success. They reacted with some streamlining to their drive-thru operation, and at first you'd get through in 5-10 minutes even if the lines were long. But based on my last few experiences I think they've reached the limit on how effective it is without a larger kitchen and more real estate. I had to drive down MLK during the lunch hour a few months ago and the lines of cars waiting to turn into the CFA between Guadalupe and Lamar were fucking up traffic for everyone. No fast food is worth that.
Plus, the people at CFA are too nice and perky. I'd rather go to Wendy's or Popeye's and get a better chicken sandwich, a shorter wait, and interact with someone whose pleasure it most certainly is not.
I cannot abide Popeye's. In fact, I find it particularly distasteful. If I want fried chicken, it's Frenchy's or nothing. On the other hand, I love CFA's chicken sammich. And their waffle fries...I'm all about the surface area to mass ratio.
The Astros' medical staff works in mysterious ways.
No. People complained about Dean’s grammar. Passé was not big league in any way. Elston was. The contrast was vivid. I know Passé got the job because of the connection to the Buffs, but for me, he was 100% minor league.
You have earned a citation for driveling in the bus lane.
I think that the Lions were followed by many in Texas because of Bobby Layne and Doak Walker.
Wanna say I'm enjoying the stories about who some of y'all rooted for before the Stros!
I deliver meals on wheels to a 92 year old that loves talking baseball. I'd read the book he wrote...if he ever wrote down these incredible stories.
The Tigers were my dad’s favorite team. They tried to sign him out of HS, but he said no and came to UT ( and met my mother). He rooted for them after that.
I was a Brooklyn Dodgers fan as a kid, but when they went to LA, I dropped them. That year was Elroy Face’s 18-1 year, and I started following them because of him. In 1960, I was with them from the first pitch of ST to Mazeroski’s homer to win the WS. That 1960 Pirates team was my all time favorite team until 2017.
I switched from the Pirates to the Astros immediately, but I do not remember when Houston baseball became available on the radio. Soon after though because I listened to Gene Elston and Lowell Passé (ugh) nightly. I also read box scores religiously in those day. Baseball season of 1962 I was 16 and would be 17 in September. My HS senior year was ‘62-‘63.
Yeah, his comment was pretty funny. The early days in the ‘60s say hi also.
The bullpen is the biggest problem. It's not fully recovered from the beating it took midseason when 1. All the injuries to the offense led to a long string of low-scoring, close games with the pen having to grind out multiple high leverage innings almost every night. 2. A fluky run of extra-inning games. 3. Then the issues with the starting rotation forcing them to pitch lots of bullpen innings 2 out of every 5 games. If Cole is out for a while (and I'm guessing they'll be conservative with him because a hamstring on a pitcher is major bad mojo) that means more hard work for the pen at least once every 5 games.
Ideally they could bring up extra pitchers to eat lots of innings in September, rest the bullpen regulars and not worry too much about the details... but that would assume they could coast through the last month. Messing up these next couple of weeks would mean not being able to finish off the A's and not getting a chance to rest people.

Two words: Kevin Brown
The more we discussed, the more I remembered, holy shit that 98 team was good.
Three for Fisher, including Aaron Sanchez, is mind-boggling.
I have a slide rule, and sort of know how it works, at least the basic principle. Not sure I could do any real calculations with it though. I keep it for nostalgic purposes, alongside my Gerber scale and ten points (both of which I *do* know how to use and actually did early in my career), mainly just to impress to the youngsters with old technology.
Happy birthday!

One of my favorite things about Jim Deshaies was when he would explain pitch selection, count, location, etc. He's say things like "two sliders down and away, so he's got him set up to come hard in..." Berkman has the same insights. If only everything didn't lead to "when I was playing..."
Every team in baseball wishes they had a pitching coach like Strom along with an analytics department like the Astros. The combination is lethal.
I do not think these things matter as much as performance. The team is prepping for the playoffs. I do not want to jinx him, but Devo looks to have turned things around. If he has, and Rondon still is shaky to bad, Devo should be pitching to MLB hitters. As I said recently, Rondon is an enigma. He was and should be a reliable late inning guy.
Toro gets moved to Round Rock. Effectively replacing Rojas.
Thanks for that story, which i didn't know about the Strommy angle either. The Shaner!!! A real Astro, and one of my all-time favorites, because he did the most with his limited ability of just about any other Astro I can ever remember. Gritty, never-say-die. Challenging and smart.
That’s only part of the quote from Cole, and he’s open to remaining an Astro if the money is right. Also, he was interviewed after the Greinke trade and he was beyond excited, too. He genuinely likes it here.
The rest of it is: Houston, according to Cole, “checks a lot of the boxes. I expect them to be there when push comes to shove. I wouldn’t mind playing there for a lot longer.”
https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2019/07/gerrit-cole-discusses-potential-trip-to-free-agency.html
He's having a busy day, so I'll leave him alone.
He also says Luhnow told him Aaron Sanchez might start on Saturday and ideally will be used as a starter next season.
Haven't seen the return. Could be a PTBNL
Typical. Puig is the toughest motherfucker alive once the fighting has died down and there are 4 people to "hold him back". What a fucking cocksucker that guy is.
All well and good, but in 2017 Morton and McCullers won the WS by pitching relief. Urquidy and Armenteros?
Maybe he's a piece the Mets want for Syndergaard.
30 years ago, I was staying in a downtown St. Louis hotel that was within walking distance of the stadium. The Cards were playing the Astros. Since the game was not on local TV and I was too cheap to buy a ticket, I walked by the stadium during the game while listening to the game on the radio.
Suddenly, the gates were opened and there were plenty of seats!!! Turns out the gates were opened each night during the bottom of the 7th inning, apparently allowing walk-in traffic! Returned the next night, enjoying the last 2.5 innings of two Astros wins!!! It was great and the price was right!
Have you ever heard of another ball club that allows or did offer this freebie? Surely, much depends on the neighborhood, but St. Louis was great!
Hinch was not vague. He was talking about Pressly’s right knee injury which shelved him for a few games.
Pressly and Osuna have been great, but they are getting tired.
He told the world he does not want to be anywhere else, and he teasingly hinted discussions had occurred.
Agree. And we also don’t know how Luhnow’s long term outlook may influence what he does now.
For example, let’s say the long term budgetary plan excludes the signing of Springer and Correa long term, and they have decided that Springer is the one to keep because of Correa’s fragility. You could give up some prospects now if you know that in the off-season your going to trade Correa with 2 years to play and can restock the system with that deal.
Not saying that’s the plan or what I’d necessarily do, just saying that the organization I’m sure is looking at this deal for how it impacts us now and the future.

One reason I like the TV broadcast is the absence of shameless homerism. Blum has been saying for awhile Altuve has become pull-happy this year, and he has illustrated the point with Altuve’s spray charts. The result often is high choppers to 3B. GIDP. Outs.
Bagwell was very frank last night about Bregman; he said his swing has been off all year. I think so too. Lots of ofers. Lots of pop ups. The absence of line drives. Looking jumpy and uncomfortable at the plate at times. Bregman’s HRs are great but are fools gold. He is not the same hitter as last year, but there is time. Bagwell says Bregman knows. If I see it, the real professionals see it also.
The rental car didn't have a radio in it?
I continue to be amazed at Luhnow’s ability to operate in total silence to the outside world. There are zero media rumors about what he is doing.
The guy was signed as minor league filler and was never expected to play in the Major Leagues. He over-performed at every level except the Majors. The man lived the dream and I salute him.
Farewell, Tyler and success in your future!
We have White for that.

Ramirez catches a 3-game suspension, Ausmus gets 1. Didn't expect that.
If the Astros are going to get Samardzija, I would want another starting pitcher as well. But Samardzija would partly solve the immediate issue.
Maybe he can just write the check to Correa's masseuse to visit Ramirez.
I’ll be stunned if Ramirez is suspended.

I’ve thought about him and it is well known that the Astros were high on him a couple years ago. Some of his numbers are decent but the dollars are the problem as I see it. You’d have to get the Giants to eat a big chunk of that which I would think would cost you more from a prospect perspective.

From Kaplan's recent article:
Collin McHugh isn’t an option to start, outside of serving as an opener. He’s no longer stretched out as a starter, and the Astros evidently believe he’s best-suited to relief at this point. His opportunity to make their postseason roster would be in the bullpen, so from that standpoint, it makes sense to let him settle into that role.
Hinch & Co. are going to earn their $$ over the next couple of weeks. I hate to see the state of the back 40% of the rotation but am really interested to see how it turns out and the machinations employed. An interesting and intriguing part fo being a fan. Good teams do well, great teams do well even with adversity.
Mrs. Hawk went to HEB. I hope she's getting more beer, we could be here all fucking night.
Not much else of substance in the article. The only other bit worth reading is this quote from a scout backing up the paragraph you posted:
“His stuff was way down. In spring training, I saw a lot of stuff to like,” one scout said. “He looked great and like he was ready, and the kid I saw yesterday was a kid."
Not sure what they mean by “immaturity so caustic,” it’s an odd phrase. I saw his last outing and didn’t have that observation at all. After getting shelled, and even with a crucial misplay in the field, he seemed “mature” to me. He did appear to lose confidence by the end though.
You also are not paying attention.
Just floating it. Does Cole have any track record of success in the postseason? JV certainly does.
I know it isn't wise to extrapolate from one start--much less one inning--but that Game 2 start of his has had an overlarge presence in my own memory. I can't remember how he handled himself in his consecutive WC matchups against Arietta.
Just throwing it out there as a possible contributing factor to their seeming disinterest in resigning him.
Sadly and eerily similar to Daryl Kile's death.
Yes watching but maybe not paying strict attention to the commentary. Alvarez seemed to be running OK on Sunday so I thought that he was well but I guess not. This would have been a great game for him to play first It is frustrating to have such talent out due to injury especially when it results in more fizzling Tyler.
I always wonder if they don't have every confidence in Cole's temperament.
It seems to me that guys they want to keep beyond their current contract have already signed. Verlander, Bregman, Altuve vs Cole, Correa, Springer.
Maybe Cole will leave, but I am not convinced he will. I hasten to add I thought Morton was a lifer too.
My source tells me Corbin will need TJS.
If Manfred was hoping to showcase actual baseball in London, he has failed. At the moment, the score is 15-6 in the top of 5th, and the Yankees have the bases loaded. There have been at least 11 pitchers so far. The starters lasted 1.0 innings, combined. There have been errors, wild pitches, passed balls, pulled hamstrings, lousy throws. Center field is a daunting 385 feet away. Fox is reduced to talking about those fucking 2' long Boomstick heart attack hot dogs. Well done.
I wonder if they're letting them carry extended pitching staffs for this little escapade. If not, tomorrow's game could take eight hours and result in about 40 runs. Shit, today's game may reach 40.
Oh good, there's two more. It's now 17-6 Yankees, 2 outs in the bottom of the 5th.
Let's not get crazy. Nothing resembling a rainbow should ever see the light of day again, except in the Museum of Ugly Baseball Uniforms.
The Shooting Stars are one of the Top 5 best looking uniforms in the history of baseball. It's a real shame they don't wear them.
I've always liked his ability to hit balls out of the zone with authority without being a strikeout machine.
Valdez looking very good today.
Lance Berkman treated his gig as a color commentator on the television broadcast very much like he used to participate in the radio talk show. Two very different formats but to "Twinkie" Berkman, it was all the same. When he would appear as a guest on Sports Talk Radio in Houston, his candor and storytelling were exactly how he performed last night on the broadcast of the game. Those of us who remember his appearances on Sports Talk Radio (and how they would just wind him up and let him go) knew he speaks with plenty of candor, holds nothing back in terms of his opinions, and usually doesn't mind speaking directly about someone or something. He did that last night when he talked about Biggio, Oswalt, Doug Eddings (the Home Plate Umpire), the NL Central cities (road trips he hated because the downtowns in those cities were ugly), Chicago Cub fans and his gig at Second Baptist. I can bet you that he'll bring along other stories and opinions tonight as well, some of which are pointed right at others he has deep opinions about, like managers and owners. But he tries to balance that out with his remarks about himself and usually, it's not about flattering himself either. So he thinks if he can be self-effacing, he can also be critical of others.
The minor league numbers are big time skewed. They are using this juiced major league ball in AAA this year. There was a brief discussion on the radio yesterday morning about that between two former GM’s who said you need to take the AAA numbers, the good numbers by hitters, and the bad numbers by pitchers, with a grain of salt.

I kinda agree with chuck here. Keuchel is not a bad guy, he is simply not worth what he thinks he is, and his hubris has cost him tens of millions of dollars. But it's impious to exult over the slain.
I loved this (refreshingly long) book preview. I'll have to go buy the larger volume. Really great insights into first-mover value and the work that goes into sustaining that advantage as others copy your moves.
A corollary to this is this great The Athletic piece on using analytics to develop your minor leaguers. Which happens to be that next step by the Astros to maintain that edge.
https://theathletic.com/990262/2019/05/30/inside-the-astros-cutting-edge-approach-to-minor-league-pitching-development/
Really like Ford and Sparks - low key, matter of fact, strong, timely analysis.
Neutral on Kalas and Blum but they have been growing on me lately. They are personally enjoying the contributions of the second stringers and it shows through and elevates the broadcast. Don't like Morales - she is annoying and detracts from the game. However her interviews with the Mayfield and Stubbs families were great.
On MLB today, GM in residence Dan O'Dowd said it was the catcher's fault for vacating a base he has no business vacating in that situation. Then he added a dig in case anyone thinks "well, he should get an A for hustle since he was going to back up a play at first in case they try to get a double play!". O'Dowd quickly said after he said it was the wrong play to go for two and the catcher had no business taking that option away from the shortstop "And he hasn't backed up first base all season long, why start now!!!" The added emphasis was O'Dowd not mine.
I get the impression that he doesn't keep score. He makes lots of mistakes.
Which is one of the reasons I pretty much exclusively listen to the radio guys. Robert Ford is constantly off on pitch location, but otherwise those guys are a joy to listen to.
Until this morning, I didn't even realize they were going more than one round last night.
Anyway, in Round 2, the good guys get:
Grae Kessinger, SS Ole Miss, 4 yr Jr.
Just a question of talent. The AA/AAA dichotomy has been around for ages.

I didn't see the play, I'll have to look for a video. But the catcher should NEVER leave the plate uncovered with a runner in scoring position, especially at 3B.

It's a compression sleeve. Not sure what the colors represent. Maybe the gold for Memorial Day? Contreras has gold trim on his catcher's gear, so maybe it has something to do with that.

An ESPN article.
In 2017 about this time a solid majority of the board agreed Verlander was too old, too expensive, and too much over the hiss to be an acquisition target. That same majority agreed Luhnow should not try to trade for him because he was not worth the prospects it would cost. Look what JV did after coming to Houston. I would not mind seeing if the Astros could revive Madbum, but he would have to give an indication he will stay. Tucker or whoever is too much for a rental who may be a bit of a project.
Plus Straw and Alvarez give Luhnow a lot of flexibility. And Fisher even.
Went to the game last night, hoping to see Whitley, but he wasn't scheduled. Anyway, Alvarez with two more homers, both to left. The first was more of a line drive on a better than excuse me swing, but not an aggressive cut. The other was a towering fly ball that made it over after fighting off a slew of 3-2 pitches. I left before his final AB, where he had another double to left. I think I've seen four homers of his in person and have yet to see one on his pull side of center field. I was impressed on one catch he had. Off the bat, I figured it would land between him and Fisher, then midway, I assume Fisher would track it, but instead it was Alvarez who got there. Not a wow play by any means, but solid.
Only saw one ball hit to Straw at SS. He ranged to his right and got a force at third.
Urquidy. Good fastball (94-98) that probably is decent in the spin rate they talk about. Seems to generally stay off bats. I assume he was working on his change as he threw it a lot. Not a good pitch at all. No deception or movement. Meat. He could command his slider but it was just average.
Reed hit a homer after I left, but prior to that, he looked like someone who didn't really want to be playing baseball. That was my impression at least.
Was surprised how small Stubbs was, but he put a charge into one line drive deep into the left field alley. Hardest hit ball of the night, IMO.
Either they had absolutely no respect for the Sounds catcher or they are making a concerted effort to steal bases. The first three guys I recall that made it to first left on the first pitch. All successful.
You rang? Martin's approach is very similar to what I used to teach. I believe that every movement in a windup should have a purpose. I very much favor an Occam's Razor approach. While I understand the desire to interpose more motion in an attempt to either hide the ball or deceive the hitter, I have always maintained that the most important aspect of pitching is balance.
It's essential to be able to repeat a delivery, and in my opinion, the more motion you have, the higher the likelihood that you'll have mechanical problems or trouble repeating a delivery. Remember that I primarily worked with beginning pitchers.
Stroman very much intrigues me.
I know that twitter has discussed the subject ad nauseum, but it just seems like Tyler White is much heavier than he was last season. It could just be that the beard is much bushier so his face seems bigger. Or maybe he just got a baggier uniform. But I wonder if he did gain weight and whether or not that has been part of the problem.
Regardless, it's got to be Kemp over White. White is striking out a ton (34% of all PAs). And he hasn't shown any power this season. I've been a big supporter of White, but he doesn't look good at the plate at all.
A contract similar to the Aaron Hicks extension should be a standing offer from the Astros. I’m sure George wants more.

Good for Martin. He has pitched the best in RR. Hope this resurrects. McHugh. Someone has to go to make room for Martin? Jose to the IL?
+1
And his child-like giddiness after he hits a homer is refreshing. He’s having a great time as a member of this team.

A distinction without a difference.
You said how could they have missed Laureano if they are so good at evaluation. That is what everyone reacted to.
I don't think anyone is disputing that Laureano could fill a similar role, it's just responding to the original comment that the Astros somehow missed the boat on him and it calls into question their ability to judge talent. He's got value, but he's not the kind of player who pushes people out of his way, and he simply wasn't an upgrade.
I assume he would have Jake's job.
Laureano again:
https://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/mike-fiers-throws-no-hitter-athletics-profar-and-laureano-make-dazzling-defensive-plays-on-consecutive-pitches/
Raise your hands if you thought Mike Fiers would throw TWO no-hitters in MLB.
He was offered $90MM over 5 years and turned it down. He keeps saying he's simply evaluating the analytical data and determining his market value. But if you think the analytical data are telling you you're worth more than the market will offer you, you fundamentally misunderstand the data. I like Keuchel, I'm sure he's a good dude. But his pride is costing him tens of millions of dollars, so I have no sympathy for his situation.
Luhnow was born and raised in Mexico.
Monterrey is a great city.
He really overvalued himself.
Although, he would get one more strike from me. After that I punch him out, so he can retire to his dugout.
Brady Rodgers? Dean Deetz?

Maybe they've discussed this on the broadcasts, but I was just scanning Baseball-Reference and saw that Stassi, Kemp and Diaz have 2, 2 and 7 RBIs respectively. White has 0.
I forget which article it was in, but one of the bottom teams had an exec anonymously quoted as “we just try to copy the Astros.”

Kemp and White are the issue. Both are out of options, and one must leave the 25 man to make room for him, barring injury.

Here's another good one: Dale Murphy (who's writing and insights I've increasingly appreciated) talking about Mike Schmidt and Mike Trout.

I've wondered a little about the Fish-slingers and if they have the team to continue to compete for the ALW even though this year was thought to be a rebuild.
Last night after the games I took a look at the extended standings at MLB.com and noticed that the Astros have played every single game against winning teams. In contrast, Seattle has played only ten games against teams over .500 and are a measly 2-8 in those games. The Angels have the same schedule anomaly as Houston, but are 9-16 while the Astros are 15-9.
I like the Astros' chances.

Has anyone seen J.B. Bukauskas in person? He had another drinker of an outing tonight. 19-something ERA so far. Do his mechanics look off? Is he working on something? Or just struggling a bit??
This is the kind of stuff I did at UT from the first base coach’s box. When I had the pitches, I would give them to Falk (closed fist fastball, open hand curve)),and he would give them to the hitters who wanted them (first name fastball, last name curve). Bob Snoddy, our first baseman, won the SWC batting title, and he gave me credit in an interview for giving him pitches all year. Falk was apoplectic.
I would guess there are about 100 more AB's in the last 7 than there were in the first 7, which would explain having "more" strikeouts. I would bet the strikeout rate is much lower

This might be common knowledge, but Giles's blown save last night ended the longest current streak of successful saves in MLB. Kenny had been 34/34 going back to Sep. 2017.
The astros podcast is put out the next morning. You get the pregame show from the previous day's game. Highlights are two days old but If you watched the game, it is nice to hear the radio calls.
It is what I normally listen to on my commute into work.
My gut tells me that Kemp is not going anywhere. I also don't see them going to 13 until some starters start to struggle or games pile up.
Just reported via Ken Rosenthal that the players association has requested that the DH be implemented league wide before the start of the upcoming 2019 season. It was part of proposed changes exchanged between the MLBPA and MLB in January. The league wants a 3 batter minimum for relief pitchers when pitching changes are made.3-batter rule is worth about 40 seconds per game on average

This is a bit harsh, but I agree about the destination.
I get the concern, but he wasn't really getting hit hard IMO, he was just off mechanically and therefore inefficient with a lot of non-competitive pitches. I'm assuming he'll find his groove.
I am going to be doing color with Capps for a game or two each month this season. I am so looking forward to talking about some guys I know a little about. Lots of talent in RR in April.

I would have to think that Bakauskas is not too far behind Whitley.
I’ve been thinking the same thing. They could put him in the long relief roll instead of James to keep him stretched out. Then again if they want to keep him stretched out they could’ve sent him to AAA to pitch in the starting rotation and then call him up if they need him. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see what the plan is.

I recently finished reading Astroball and I am very emotionally invested in a Correa bounce back season.
I have never understood the Harper mania. He had one insane year, a couple of pretty good years, and most recently a couple of years where he gave his team a WAR that Jake Marisnick could give you. Sure, he hits 20-30 home runs. Great. But the idea that what he gets paid and what Mike Trout, who has a legitimate claim on best player in the game, gets paid are talked about at the same time is crazy to me.
The belief that Harper is some sort of franchise cornerstone is just bizarre. I'd rather have Springer than Harper - no homer - and it's really not all that close.
I wonder what sort of contract George will end up with. And with whom.
I'm really excited about having Brantley in the line-up. He isn't flashy or cocky; he just hits. I think he's going to be a great addition.
Lots of talk on here about some of the young guys in camp that have looked great. Alvarez, Toro and Tanilu along with Whitley, Martin and JBB have no doubt been impressive. I’d like to take a moment however to talk about two veterans who have really had good springs to this point.
Jake Marisnick has really impressed. Much has been written about the change he has made to his stance at the plate. It looks to be paying off. While his .310 batting average to this point is encouraging, it is his reduction in strikeouts that has been the most welcome surprise to me. Last season He struck out 39 percent of the time. So far this spring, his K percentage sits at 13 percent. Agreed, he is facing some pitching that he won’t see when the season starts. Nevertheless, his new approach seems to be working. When the season starts, if he can cut last season’s 39 percent K percentage down to under 25 percent, this team will really benefit from his being in the lineup and not just defensively.
The other player who has impressed is Robinson Chirinos. Steve Phillips said the other day that he was really surprised when he interviewed Chirinos because Robinson was so excited about the analytics the Astros were using to help him improve offensively and defensively. Robinson has totally bought into what the Astros want him to do to improve and he can’t wait for the season to start. He has had a very good spring at the plate hitting .348. While I don’t expect that to continue when the season start against better pitching, if he can up his batting average from last season by 15 to 20 points, this lineup gets much deeper than it already is.

3 batter minimum or the end of an inning?
i.e. does a guy who gets the last 2 outs of the 7th have to face 1 batter in the 8th?
Does anyone have an understanding about why Josh Fields was released by the Dodgers?
Given that McHugh and probably Peacock are heading back into the rotation and that Devenski hasn't looked good this spring (including last night's appearance) I am wondering whether it makes sense to sign Fields.
Toro looks really good to me also. Switch-hitter too, I think.
I like Alvarez a lot.
For anyone thinking about bringing back the cheese jokes, we pretty much covered them all a while back.

Echoing others, no way Alvarez is left unprotected.
Say hello to minor league camp: Brady Rodgers, Erasmo Pinales, Jose Hernandez, Ryan Hartman and Lorenzo Quintana.
Reed has zero value. He is a AAAA hitter who can't hit in the major leagues.
I hope Fisher can re-establish value this spring. There are teams who could use an outfielder.
WTF difference does this make? I hope some other .org wants him.
Yes it was. Nice rebound by Devo. Also, another good game from Derek Fisher which is encouraging.
And by the way, Armenteros continues to impress. If he continues this all spring, just like he did last spring, he’s going to put them in a difficult position. I like it.

It's way too fucking early to bring up 1980. Remember it as if it was yesterday. I took so much shit that year because I started bragging early in that game, and my friends who were Phightins fans gave me unmitigated shit for days.
Early results are positive.
Wow. Nice deal for Minnesota. I'm surprised he didn't find better but maybe (like others) he overplayed his hand early and by the time he was willing to get real about a deal, possible suitors early moved to plan B and were no longer viable destinations. Side note: Just think how cheap the deal might have been had draft compensation been attached to him.
I don't have a link. This is all based on what I heard this morning.
The MLB Channel on Sirius/XM has spent the last week ranking the top-10 players at each position (LF/RF combined to Corner OF) based on the votes of their hosts/analysts. They finished with CF today. Steve Phillips then revealed that he spent last night compiling team rankings based on the results. If your team had the top player at a position it got 10 points, second best player got 9 points, etc. There were seven Astros ranked:
Altuve No. 1 2B 10 points
Springer No. 2 CF 9 points
Bregman No. 3 3B 8 points
Correa No. 4 SS 7 points
Osuna No. 9 Clos 2 points
Verlander/Cole combined in SP for 9 points (not sure where they each ranked).
The Astros total of 45 points was nine points higher than the Yankees' 36 points. The Brewers, Cubs, and Nats were next in line.
Harper was the No 5 Corner and Kimbrel was the No 2 closer. Signing both would only move the Nats into third place ahead of the Brewers.
Boras says the Harper deal is done. He just won't say which team.
I am going to guess that Manny will wear out his welcome with fans, teammates and management long before the expiration of the contract.
Please let it be so.
Did not say he would. If Manny intends to opt out, he only has s five year deal.
Depends on whether Harper wants a record contract more than he wants a ring. What did he turn down Washington or if the report today is true, why has he turned down multiple long term offers?
Great story. I had no idea of the extent of his history of violence.
Off season special Friday at 6 p,m att channel
its getting close folks I can smell baseball in the air
This stuff with late signing FA's, does make me think the system is broken or Team Boras is really team anti-christ.
Not that I am a homer for management, but the excesses of superstar contract negotiations and the stuff we have seen in the last 10 years is ass-puckering insane.
For Harper not to even consider above market annual offers on a shorter term deal misses where this sport is headed (imo).
Free-agent left-hander Dallas Keuchel asked for a six- to seven-year contract worth $25MM to $30MM per annum at the beginning of the offseason, while fellow ex-Astros teammate and Scott Boras client Marwin Gonzalez sought a deal in the $60MM neighborhood, according to Buster Olney of ESPN.

They're "fixing" things that won't bring in new fans.
I understand throwing stuff against the wall to see if it sticks, but Manfred's approach seems to be to drop napalm on the walls and see if anybody tunes in.
BBWA, protectors of the sanctity of the game.
He was a great player. A great hitter, a great outfielder. Triple Crown winner, MVP of both leagues. World Series winner. First black manager. One of the all time greats.
Mine was meeting Dizzy Dean and getting his autograph on my Astros hat that Harry Walker sent to me. Dizzy was in my hometown to broadcast a few innings of the minor league game and meet and greet the fans. Even though I never saw Dizzy Dean pitch, I knew lots of stories about the old Cardinals Gas House Gang because my Dad was a Cardinals fan (furthest team down south for many years). My hometown had a St. Louis Cardinals radio outlet until the Astros came into baseball.I well remember listening to Diz call the Game of the Week on Saturdays. Not the most gifted announcer but never was there a bigger character behind a mic.
He was friendly and wanted to talk baseball, whicch tickled the shit of me at 12. I could have had him autograph my Aces hat, but I had him sign my Astros hat. He wrote: "Best of luck from Ole Diz." Sadly, because I was probably doing something I shouldn't have been doing (manning a water balloon slingshot at summer camp aimed at girls across the lake), the slingshot recoiled and I ended up in the lake, and the lake swallowed my hat. I was devastated. I swam and looked around for the hat to no avail.
As I recall, Dizzy was dead within about a year of that chance encounter. It's truly one of my most prized memories. It's a connection, however tenuous, to a significant period in baseball.

Today we bid farewell to @BBailey_19 after an awesome two weeks of prep before Spring Training. How bout these @TrackManBB numbers from his live session: AVG FB spin rate- 2684 @ 93.4 mph (28.7 Bauer Units). Good for ~4.5 standard deviations above league average. Yep, that'll do.
As a point of reference, Justin Verlander's spin rate on his 4-seamer in 2018 was 2621 rpms while Ryan Pressly's spin rate last year on his 4-seamers was 2565 rpms (9th in MLB). The highest spin rate on 4-seamers in all of MLB was David Robertson at 2661 and Bailey exceeded that in his training session at Driveline. Verlander and Pressly are harder throwers than Bailey (by a couple of mph) while Robertson is almost exactly the same. FWIW, Robertson and Bailey are about the same height (5'11" and 5'10"). None of this of course tells us anything about location nor the effectiveness of pitches beyond the 4-seamer.
(For those curious, Bauer units is simply spin rate divided by velo.)
In Phoenix the driving concern (reportedly) was conserving water usage. Not sure about Arlington.

Some fans have felt that the HOF is diminished by the high volume of entrants. Now that this is finally possible, moving forward, the new 100% standard will help to create an inner circle of HOFers -- the players who are unanimous selections from 2019 forward.
Just thinking about this some more. This is easily the worst HOF class in history. It truly is an embarrassment.
And the BBWAA vote was just as bad. There is no legitimate argument that Edgar Martinez is more deserving than Lance Berkman, yet one sails in and the other drops off the ballot without even consideration. I guess the voters have decided that in the absence of voting in the steroid guys like Bonds and Clemens, they have to just find some warm bodies. And there’s no reasoning behind which warm bodies they choose. Just a sad day for baseball.
Oswalt and Berkman are both going to drop off the ballot. That's pretty surprising.
I've always been surprised at Pettitte's low numbers. I thought he'd be in by now (not that I think he deserves it, but he *was* a Yankee, after all).
As for the potentials...I think Schilling will eventually get in, but not sure about Bonds or Clemens (at least on the BBWAA ballot). Yes, they are trending up, but I think they've kind of maxed out the voters who are willing to vote for them.
I'm mildly surprised that Garrett Stubbs isn't on the list. Okay, more than mildly.
Are you still... master of your domain?

When does the hot stove season start? I'm ready for the winter meetings and some big signings by the Stros!
I'm amazed by this too. Though, it makes me think that with each passing day there is a greater chance of Keuchel coming back for a 1 year contract.
Buster Olney reiterated on today’s podcast that he believes the Astros could be the mystery team for Harper.

Another former Astro staffer to the Orioles.
I always thought that one of the drivers behind the name change (in addition to moving to the dome) was that Colt Firearm Co. was starting to ask for a cut of the merchandise sales.
I miss the Colt.
Basically MLB is looking the other way, because they want the big PR win of the dual sport star choosing baseball.

I tuned in at halftime and haven't seen Clemson do a whole hell of a lot of punting.that's a great job.
Man, that is some kind of a rotation.
Well that and the whole super-model spouse thing.
Truth be told, even without Marwin Gonzales, the Astros have major league options at the ready to move around to fill in where needs might arise. That makes a AAA insurance less viable. When you can move Gurriel and Diaz around and use White at first base, you have pretty good options, not to mention using Bregman at short too. Diaz is going to be someone who helps a lot if he's as good a bat as some say. Might even give Tony Kemp a chance to stick around as a second base option plus outfielder as well.
Maybe they really wanted/needed the 40-man roster spot for future moves?
Latte art is fucking hard, man.
Those are pretty good numbers.
Dreaming. The rumor mill is dead quiet, as far as I can tell.
An oat bran muffin for Wright and a croissant for Harrigan. Brands and Curtis have usually eaten already, so they just order tea.

Sweetish Hill Bakery on west 6th.
I just looked it up on the kindle app; he doesn't mention the location, just that it's on Monday mornings.
He mentioned that breakfast group a few times in the book. Even told of Karl Rove crashing it once and shooting the political breeze with them.
'God Save Texas' by Lawrence Wright was enjoyable.
He wrote 'Going Clear'; highly recommend that title as well.
And keep the Buddhist jokes rolling.
Dana Holgorsen is a walking couch fire. Please take him UH. Morgantown doesn’t want him. He’s a mess personally and has chased off more top level recruits than he’s brought in. Enjoy.
I believe that Luhnow has a plan, a backup plan, a backup, backup plan and a backup, backup, backup plan ad infinitum. Because isn't apparent or discernible to us is meaningless. He knows that the Astros have a real shot at another championship and he is going to move heaven and earth to accomplish it.
I'm kinda thinking if the Astros wanted to sign him they would have.
Reddick doesn't strike me as someone to call you out publicly, anyway. If he has something to say to you, it'll most likely be in private.
Plus, he's one of those rare switch hitters you don't even have to buy a second helmet. Think of the savings.
Jurickson Profar goes to the A's (which presumably ends their attempt to re-sign Jed Lowrie). Rangers net 3 minor leaguers (4 incoming, 1 outgoing) plus some int'l slot money. Rays also involved in transaction.
So now that we know that the Miami Marlins are in conversation with the Houston Astros again and that they (the Marlins) know you can't center a deal around "Run" Forrest "Run" Whitley, what if they (the Marlins) said to the Astros they wanted the following:
Kyle Tucker (OF), J.B. Bukauskas (RHP), Max Stassi (C), and Tony Kemp (LF)
Would you (not asking would the Astros, I'm asking would *you*) do this trade? I have not heard anything about asking price but suffice it to say since the Marlins have asked for good to really good major league talent from previous suitors (Bellinger, Acuna, Conforto, et. al.), methinks you're going to have to mix prospects with young talent for them. Are they asking too much in my trade scenario?
Isn't neo-Marwin the role that they traded for Aruaz to fill? Or is he expected to be in the minors next year?
With Verlander and Cole free agents after next season, 2019 has to be the "all in it to win it" year for the Astros.
That's not to say that the Astros' window closes after this season, but the kick ass rotation that the Astros are enjoying might not be around and will require significant retooling.
Oh, God, no.
This makes a ton of sense to me because you use the Reddick money to sign-up Cruz. What it does is basically assures Houston would be going for either a young CF like Straw or Tony Kemp plays multiple outfield roles. On the other hand, it takes away any block from Kyle Tucker coming in as the pencil-in LF even before ST. I think this combination of Cruz/Brantley does alot to help the club get more consistent on offense. Brantley plays left field and in a pinch can play RF if necessary. I would love for the Astros to find a way to move Springer to right permantly, hence why you might see Kemp in center more often if Tucker isn't really pencilled in. And that would be a really good, consistent offense because at this point of his career, Reddick isn't as consistent a hitter as Kemp is showing he can be. Gives the new guy, Diaz, from Toronto the added flexibility to play some LF when needed. He has a really good bat from what I've heard and is a consistent line drive hitter too. But who would take Reddick right now? Maybe the Mets if the Astros take some of the salary, but then again, that would surprise me.Reddick isn't as consistent a hitter as Kemp is showing he can be.
I still say an option is to get one of either Cruz or Brantley right now and wait it out in the trading deadline if you can get another bat. But then again, Crane said he'll flex the payroll if he is convinced that Luhnow is making a really good deal to get both Cruz and Brantley.
They have been trying hard to trade Kemp and/or Puig, perhaps to make room for B-rice.
I hope he makes the decision easy for them in ST. And I hope they have a great addition at DH between now and then.
I caught some of a brief interview with Luhnow and the MLB Network guys yesterday and he did not seem to be stressed in the least.
Framber's strike rate is low compared to the rest of the staff last year. He walked 24 in 37 innings. The high walk rate has always been his nemesis.
lets hope he wasn't just putting on a good game face
I feel the same way.
It will be interesting to see how he fares without the Astros ecosystem surrounding him. I'll be equally interested to see how the front office staff that other orgs have imported fare as well. High performing organizations are rarely a person or two but an entire ecosystem. I'm wondering if the parts that are being enticed away (players and staff) regress to the mean and the Astros ecosystem maintains their high performing nature. Or if the opposite happens.
A.J. Pollock?
Richard Justice said Monday night that with the Astros window to win open right now, Crane has told Luhnow he has the green light to spend up to the luxury tax number if he deems it necessary to win another title. That would be around $207-208 million and a drastic increase unheard of from this franchise. If that report is accurate, then perhaps there are ways to get Harper. If he was in the 2 hole behind Springer and in front of Altuve where teams had to pitch to him, he would light up MMP. Still seems far fetched though.
I can’t think of another high profile bat via free agency besides Machado and the Astros don’t need him. Is Cruz considered high profile?
Would have to be via trade. Is Realmuto “high profile?” Perhaps.

Perhaps to you. I think he is more valuable in the pen. Wherever they use him, he must rediscover his slider.
Tucker had a very poor MLB debut, but it was only 72 trips to the plate, and he was 21 years old. Meanwhile, he hit .332/.400/.590 in AAA with 24 HR and 93 RBI in only 100 games. It's possible the Astros see something in his swing or approach or whatever where they don't think he'll ever approach those numbers in the majors, but I don't think it's accurate to say that he "played himself" into being trade bait.
Proceed? What do you mean?
I understand not wanting to block Tucker if they don’t trade him, but if I had a chance to get Brantley I’d think I’d try to find a way to fit him in. He is a professional hitter who will hit .300 and strikes out only 11 percent of the time. He isn’t going to hit for much power but you could do a lot worse at DH than Brantley if you didn’t want to spend the dollars for Cruz’s power.

Keuchel has always pitched on the thinnest of margins. His ability to stay within the margins has deteriorated and hitters have made adjustments. My guess is that he will have a hard time getting a contract anywhere near what he thinks that he is worth.
Just how many times can Joey Gallo strike out?
That's a perfect attitude for someone who works at Nordstrom.
Wasn’t that what happened to Yordano Ventura too? Or at least, he was robbed while he lay dying in the road.
The Luhnow agenda, post-Chirinos:
"We're still evaluating different ways to improve the team, but starting pitcher is one of the areas where we're looking at, maybe an arm to the bullpen and also another bat for the lineup," [Luhnow] said. "Those are three avenues we're exploring."
No Greinke, please.
2nd that. Wasn't that the same game where he forgot to tag the runner who overshot home plate and crawled back to score?
Not a surprise that he missed a 2nd GG this year.
I find it hard to believe this will be the situation.
Kris Boyd's selection as All Big 12 is a triumph of hype over production. He is rarely near his receiver when the ball arrives.
Mike Fiers (for the 2nd straight year), Robbie Grossman and Xavier Cedeno among the non-tenders.
I might be crazy, probably am. Would anybody else be willing to take a flyer on Shelby Miller?
I know he hasn't been healthy and hasn't been good for a few years but he's still pretty young, 28. I also looked at his Brooks baseball page, and he hasn't lost any velocity, seems to still have pretty decent stuff, I haven't watched him pitch so maybe he just doesn't have it.
I just feel like this staff could figure out how to get a lot out of him, if he could stay healthy.
Like I said, I'm probably crazy and I'm not sure how you can put him on 40 at this point with what else needs to be added.
Just see it as a low risk, potential huge reward if you help him figure out that arm talent again

Sorry it was confusing --- I was trying to say I wish KC and Chisox was more like Pittsburgh et al.
Agree with you 100 % -- Love Hudson's Idea for Old Florida TB Park --- instead of the Disneyization of b-ball culture.
Surprised Milwaukee did not go even more into the "Beer Garden" theme --- Imagine the park having its own Brew Village --- everyone would be drunk including the toddlers.
Absolutely love parks like this!
Pittsburgh did themselves some justice with there new one a few years ago
Houston's juice box is phenomenal
Baltimore's field and complex is pretty cool
Would not mind seeing some others adopt a more local feel --- like KC, Chisox, etc..

Sounds like a swan song deal for McCann.
He was a great example of what a veteran leader can be. I'll already remember his clutch his against NY in games 6 and 7, his solo shot in game 5 of the WS, his hbp in the 10th, and chugging from 1st to 3rd in game 7 on Marwin's double, then hoofing it in safely on the grounder and being greeted by Correa imitating him by running in place. Lastly, the scene that gets me every time, was when he and Gattis embraced after the game both with tears running down their burly faces.
His contributions of course ran deeper than just those moments of production. Good luck to him, very glad he was an Astro.
We all knew he wasn't coming back, but Brian McCann signed with the Braves.
I think Berkman should get in but I don't think he will. You can stack his numbers from 01-09 against just about anyone not named Barry Bonds and he looks pretty damn good. The problem Berkman has is longevity, broke into the bigs at 23 and last played at 36. Hard to be a HOFer with only a 13 year resume and 3 of those 13, he played less than half a season

Pretty similar -- Halladay just did it for longer (and was maybe a little better at his peak).
Halladay: 203-105, 3.38 ERA, 64.3 WAR, 416 G, 390 GS, 2749.1 IP, 2117 K, 1.178 WHIP
Oswalt: 163-102, 3.36 ERA, 50.1 WAR, 365 G, 341 GS, 2245.1 IP, 1852 K, 1.211 WHIP
Halladay's top 10 most similar players on BBRef are interesting:
1. Verlander
2. Greinke
3. Gooden
4. Lester
5. Guidry
6. Jimmy Key
7. Dazzy Vance
8. Oswalt
9. Saberhagen
10. Hudson
So, you've got 1 Hall of Famer (Vance), 1 guy with a good chance of getting in (Verlander), and a bunch of good/great-but-not-HOF players (Greinke, Gooden, Lester, Guidry, Key, Oswalt, Saberhagen, Hudson).
