The Mets
« on: September 18, 2019, 03:24:30 pm »
My son once asked me why I don't root for the Mets since I live in the NY metropolitan area.  And I told him that first of all, I was an Astros fan and you can only have one team.  And then I said that I could never root for the Mets (even passively) because of 1986.  And he told me to get over it.  And I said that there is no getting over 1986.

I think that I'm over it.  Maybe because the Astros finally won a world series.  Maybe because we are going through an Astros golden age and I don't need to focus on past misery.  Maybe because the Astros aren't in the National League any more and they only play the Mets every three years.  Maybe because there are actually a couple of likeable players on the Mets, including JD Davis.

I've got lots of friends who are Mets fans.  And I feel for them.  Because they are good people.  And they have had little but disappointment from their baseball team for a pretty long time.  And even when the Mets do well, they still get overshadowed by the Yankees.  So along with my friends, I've been rooting for the Mets to make the wildcard -- which is unlikely going to happen.  But still I've been rooting for it.

Curious to know if anyone else has softened up about some of your past hates.
Boom!

Braves, Mets, Cardinals...I don't hate any of them anymore, and actively like the Mets. In the NL I hate only the Cubs.

The Dodgers I fear.

I'm still not over 1986, only because it was such a crotch-punch. 1980 either. I don't hate the Mets and Phillies anymore. They seem like faded antagonists of a different era. I'm sure I'd feel different if the Astros were still in the NL but for now, that hatred is reserved for more immediate foes.

Yeah, 86 stung for a long time. I think the WS in 2017 healed some of that. As well as not playing them often.

Looking back I still dislike some of those players...Gooden, Strawberry...

The Cubs were for a while a team I REALLY rooted against. That had a lot to do with Zambrano, Dusty Baker.

Now my disdain is focused on the Stangers, but mostly because of Odor. Can't stand the guy.

After seeing what Teejoe wrote, I have to admit that mostly, my hatred was for the opposing fans, the obnoxious imbeciles. Outside of some of those sorry-ass bastards on the Cubs, I don't much care about the Mets, Brewers or the Braves outside of their fans. I long ago stopped hating the Dodgers, and I remember those games as real blood feuds. I've learned to hate the neanderthals from Boston and take some joy in their front office stumbles, because despite all their bluster they really are little brothers to the Yankees and always will be. Fuck the Rangers, inconsequential clowns who resemble the Keystone Cops, and their desperate need to be relevant.

But oh, the flame that burns for those assholes on the north side of Chicago. I have a friend who works for the Cubs in a pretty visible position and I make exceptions for him, but otherwise, Fuck The Cubs. Forever.
I'm in love with rock and roll and I'll be out all night.

Should clarify perhaps that I was 6 in 86. My first Astros' teams natural rivals were the Cards and Braves.

I will be surprised if Odor is still a Ranger next season. But I will still hate the Rangers for some reason. And I lived in the Metroplex for more years than I have lived anywhere. They just don't do things with the same class as the Astros do. Even their cable broadcast crew and presentation annoys me. Hell they are copying the Astros stadium design.

The Rangers could reincarnate Roberto Clemente and Mother Teresa and I would still hate them for Harvey.

The last time I was rooting for the Braves, Warren Spahn was pitching and some hot shot rookie named Hurricane was supercharging the offense.

I'm alot younger than many here(born in 91), so I've never had any hate for the Mets, never really think about them in any way at all really. My hate has always been for the Cardinals and Cubs, fuck both of them. I never hated the Braves, maybe because I was so young in 97/99/01 and also because because we paid them back in 04/05. Now, my primary hate is reserved for the team that plays where I live. Fuck the Rangers, I took so much shit from 10-13 from that fanbase that without even accounting for everything that has gone down the last 5 years, I'd hate them with every ounce of my being. You better believe that I've had a great time shitting all over Rangers fans every chance I get.

Seriously though, fuck the Rangers and their shitty "fanbase"

+1 And 1980.

I feel like '86 hurt more because of '80. No question in my mind we win it all with a healthy J.R.  in '80.

We probably win in '80 if the Dodgers don't sweep the final weekend.  Niekro could have pitched twice in the NLCS.

I think 1980 was tougher for me to take than '86 but I definitely hate the Mets more than the Phillies. When I lived in St Louis (85-94) and the NL only had 2 divisions, I pulled for the Cards against anyone but the Astros. Once the NL went to three divisions and the Cards and Astros became rivals, I started hating them. The Co-ards incident and the hacking only intensified my hate.

I literally fucking despise the New York cunts - sorry, mets - with the intensity of a thousand white hot suns.  I was nine years old in 1986 and I celebrate the fact that my hatred hasn't dissipated in the intervening years.  My girlfriend doesn't understand it.  She also loves the Steelers.  I have to remind her that I hate them too, the cheating sons of bitches, because Mike Renfro is still in bounds (even if I was too young to remember).  To her immense credit, she has started cheering for the Astros.

ETA: fuck the braves.  That's another team for whom there's a special circle of Hell.
