Astros' opener

They plan on using Josh James as an opener for Framber Valdez tonight. Since Valdez is so bad in the first inning (11.57 ERA in the first inning of his 5 starts) this might work out better. Maybe.

Hinch & Co. are going to earn their $$ over the next couple of weeks.  I hate to see the state of the back 40% of the rotation but am really interested to see how it turns out and the machinations employed.  An interesting and intriguing part fo being a fan.  Good teams do well, great teams do well even with adversity.

I'm a little curious as to why McHugh doesn't get a shot at holding down one of those BOR spots. He has been successful in that role before.

I’ve been wondering the same thing. They may just like him better in the pen (and I think I do too). I also wonder if they feel the health issues he has this year are better managed if he’s in the pen.

From Kaplan's recent article:

Collin McHugh isn’t an option to start, outside of serving as an opener. He’s no longer stretched out as a starter, and the Astros evidently believe he’s best-suited to relief at this point. His opportunity to make their postseason roster would be in the bullpen, so from that standpoint, it makes sense to let him settle into that role.
