Grass 27, Artificial Turf 3
« on: October 12, 2018, 04:05:57 pm »
With today's announcement that they're switching from grass (and despite a retractable roof), the D-Backs join the BJs and Rays with turf home fields.

And the Rangers may join them come 2020 when their new retractable roof park opens.

I like the fact the Rangers signed Asdrubal Cabrera, so we can call him Ass-dribble.

This is really shocking to me. Is there a common perception that clubs are doing this to enable them to rent out the stadium during the offseason to events that would otherwise destroy the grass? Whatever the case, it makes me proud of the home nine for bucking the trend, and nervous that they won't always!

In Phoenix the driving concern (reportedly) was conserving water usage. Not sure about Arlington.

In Arlington I believe it was more a concern about how much light the field would get. And that was somewhat based on the positioning of the field to the sun IIRC.

Edit: Just checked out an article in Dallas News about the surface. Player safety was cited by Ranger brass as a consideration and the author added that the fake stuff allows the club to better use the field for other revenue-producing events.

Cost saving/revenue enhancing.

From a business standpoint sound thinking.

From a baseball standpoint: Ha Ha! Suck it!
