What browser are you using on your desktops?

Explorer.

Ah.  Apparently there's a bug with IE compatibility that should be fixed in the next forum update whenever it gets released (should be reasonably soon).

That said, you should know that Internet Explorer is an old, insecure, dying web browser and you should really start using something different (e.g. Chrome or Firefox) if you have any say in the matter.

Internet Explorer and I have something in common then. I will try switching to Chrome and see how that works out. Thanks for the suggestion. I suspected that may be the case.

Apropos of nothing, I was wearing my Astros polo last week and another guy struck up a conversation with me.  He said he was a huge Astros fan, bitched a little bit about Hinch in the WS, and then asked me what I thought of the scandal.  I said there was so much conflicting info out there, hard to believe what is true, waiting for the full report, etc.  Dude launches into a tirade about the people running the team, Hinch and Luhnow should be permabanned from baseball, and that Mike Fiers is a hero for speaking out about it.

Except that when he mentioned Fiers he said, "Who's that guy---Mike 'Fears'?"

Yeah, you know how I know you're not as big a fan of the team?

Probably a Johnny-come-lately post-Fiers fan. Fuck him and the horse he rode in on.

Which is why it’s really unlikely any player faces serious consequences.  It’s gonna be front office, he org and maybe some coaches including Beltran and Cora.

I doubt they will touch Beltran or Cora. If so, slap on the wrist.

I just feel absolutely sick to my soul about all this shit. Is it accurate to say that there is no evidence of the Astros cheating since 2017? Most all the columns I’ve read are laced with what seem to me pretty blatant rationalizations for the one-sided skewering the Astros are receiving, including that Crane is a war profiteer and Luhnow fucked over Brady Aiken and the Astros are unscrupulous in their zeal for winning—never mind how exactly.

This should be the best time in history to be an Astros fan. I’m pissed at the front office for fumbling the Osuna and then the Taubman issues and sickened and saddened by this whole fucking abysmal shit show that likely wouldn’t have played out this way had they not. What a steaming pile we’ve been forced to watch the best team in Astros history made out to be.

And the silence from Houston is deafening. I imagine they’re under gag orders but Jesus Christ.

OK, here endeth the rant. Sorry. Thanks.

I could not have described my feelings any better than you did in your first sentence.

The Astros would have to add more than Reddick (money and/or some other player) to get that done.

I would think Detroit would insist on prospects or younger players.

I think part of this is that MLB is concerned about cheating/sign stealing and knows it is rampant. They need a scapegoat. Houston is a convenient foil.

Talk Zone / Re: More controversy

I want to believe Beltran too.  My disappointment comes from the fact that MLB is not interested in the truth and will not thoroughly investigate.  They flat out  stated yesterday the goal now is to punish the Astros as quickly as possible, and nothing is off the table, including stripping the World Series title and declaring the Yankees AL champions in 2017 AND 2019.  There is talk of banning Hinch and Luhnow for life, and making the players return their 2017 rings.  The latter is the most laughable to me.  But there is no MLB without the New York Yankees, so they will get to dictate this whole affair.  That's just the reality.

Even one of those "punishments" would do it for me as a fan of the game at this level. I would be done. I probably should be done now but I want to believe the best.

No problem with Trout winning.

Bregman had HRs all season.   But he didn't really start raking until midseason or so.  He puts it together from April thru September and he'll have his MVP.

His contribution filling in at SS was probably underappreciated nationally.

His playing every day should have been taken more seriously in my opinion. Value is greatly diminished on the DL.

I truly believe that the Taubman fiasco, especially the lame-ass attempt to discredit the SI piece, left the Astros ass exposed and the media is not holding back with the paddle.

Fine.  Just don't stop with Houston. We've been told that suspicions are rampant amongst contenders.   Tear back the curtain.

I don't believe for a minute that the Taubman fiasco isn't related to the sign stealing crap.

His son got the job because presumably he will be the owner one day. Better he get involved in the business now so he can get the experience and be a good owner if and when that day comes. Let's not pretend this is unique, every owner of every professional sports team has their kids in high positions. It makes sense, if you were Crane and your son wanted to "join the family business" he would be hired the next day.

Some public comments from the priniciples themselves:

(Crane) We felt at this time it was time for [Jared] to step in. I'm past retirement age, and he needs to learn the business if the family is going to retain the team...I'm not a spring chicken. I've been working hard for a long time, and in all of my stuff I'm building a succession plan. Baseball requires a plan in peace for each team, so we're doing that and planning for the family. It has nothing to do with Reid.

(Reid) Jim Crane has been a great owner for the city of Houston, and I thank him for the opportunity to lead the Houston Astros organization. Thank you to the many employees, fans, and partners that have supported this team during my tenure as president. Baseball is about bringing joy to people's lives and I take pride in knowing that we have made so many memories for our fans. While my role has changed, I will remain with the Astros and look forward to another great season in 2020.

He had that terrific season a few years ago.  The Astros obviously didn't know the injury existed prior to the deal for him.  I don't think we'll know how the Astros feel about him long term until after the contract situation is done.

Don't clubs get to see medicals on guys before consummating a deal? Not being a wise-guy, I'm just not really sure. I thought that was part of the process?

Crane today appeared to express a willingness to go over it. Hooray! If Cole wants to stay and will compromise of the length of the deal, maybe we have a chance.

I found this from Luhnow: We're probably over the line [the so-called Luxury Tax] at this point without any added additions. Fortunately, Jim's been really open to different investment ideas depending on how we justify it and how it helps our team. At the end of the day, we're not going to know our payroll until we start next year. There's going to be opportunities to improve the team.

Don’t overlook the very different circumstances in which the two teams entered the series.  The Astros were coming down off the high of the ALCS and fatigue (mental as well as physical) was likely a factor.  The Nats, on the other hand, came in completely rested and with an abundance of confidence following their demolition of the Jakes.

Hopefully, they’re a little deflated having been swept at home.  They can’t be happy about coming back to Houston.  How they react will be very interesting.

I don't mind the storyline. It's what reporters do and maybe it was his last game. It'll play out with lots of noise and hoopla and odds are what odds are, and I'd just as soon ease into that now than discover it when it happens. I would really hate for him to end up a Yankee though.

Probably because of the storyline I was thinking last night what a special defensive team this is for a pitcher, and that if I were a pitcher looking at leaving the Astros, that's what might hold me. It would be easier to pitch in front of this team than any place else in baseball. Yeah, Cole is great, but at least a bit of that greatness is what's behind him.

You can also see that he is having fun and enjoying the attention and  that is probably something he didn't have much of in Pittsburg.

Well said. I hope JV has a dominating game left. I hope the bats show up and support him with early runs. I hope the team keeps playing with the intense passion we saw in DC. This will not be easy.

why would the team play with more passion in DC than in Houston? I don't question your statement but it is puzzling to me what we have just seen. Flies in the face of history.  Maybe the Nats did the same? Just very odd for all of the five games to have gone to the visitor.

Springer is dead meat if he tries for 3B.  Tucker had to hold up at 2B, and I was wondering if he was even going to score.  Springer would have had to slow up approaching 2B anyway.  It's possible the Nats misplay the throw and Springer makes it to 3B, but you don't make that out at 3B.

Very sorry to hear about your father's passing but what a lovely story. As a youth, I always went to games with my grandfather who lived in Houston. He passed when I was in college, shortly after the '80 NLCS. My father played and loves baseball but was much too busy when I was young to set time away for a ballgame. I went to my first game with my father in July 2017 on his 81st birthday. It was magical and I firmly believe we had a hand in the push to the championship. We spoke on the phone for 30-40 minutes after the last out. He sounded like a kid again.

One of the reasons my wife and I moved from metro D-FW to Georgetown upon her retirement was to see our two grandsons, age 1 and 3, grow up and to help our daughter and son-in-law, both busy professionals, with them. Son-in-law is an avid basketball and football fan so it is my grandfatherly duty to introduce these lads to the great game. I look forward to taking them to UT and Express games. I hope it "takes". Hell, my wife has even gotten interested in the Astros the last couple of years. A lot of it is Hinch and the players. These guys are easy to like.

Long time lurker...over a dozen years but hey, I'll give my first take and try not to be called a neck.

Hinch is consistent in his approach...and players love that about him, they know what to expect. He always gives guys scheduled days off whether they were hot or not or whether they liked it or not.  He uses analytics for shifts and sticks with it despite some player's objections (cough, Dallas, cough) and he doesn't put up with disrespect (see ya Giles).

He also never intentionally walked a batter. From a macro level that's what this pitching decision is...essentially we're not going to intentionally walk a game with our bullpen. We're going to go right after you and if you beat us, you tip your cap and move on to the next game.

Welcome aboard. Don't wait another 12 years to post again.

They would if such a thing existed.

That reminds me....last nite I was channel surfing and ESPN had this doc about the history of college football and television. I am old enough to remember most of it. There was for several years in the '60s but one college football game televised per weekend. And each team could only appear on the Game of the Week once per year. So, if Texas/Oklahoma was televised nationally the Texas/A%M game could not be even if the Aggies hadn't used up their quota of one. My how things have changed.

They just need to see the ball and hit the ball.  It's simple, right?

I don't know if it's simple. Probably not but seeing the ball well against a different guy each time is probably really hard.

Meanwhile...7.2IP, 3H/2ER, 11K:4BB Yankee pen this series
                      4.2IP, 1H/0ER, 5K:2BB.   Astros pen this series.
Our guys are holding their own very nicely.

I think Smoltz is actually on to something. Think about how many times this year the Astros did nothing through the first few innings and then destroyed the pitching in the 5th or 6th innings after they had seen the stuff a bit. With the way Boone is handling his staff (and same for Cash in the last series), they're simply not getting that third time around against the same pitcher.

Exactly. This is not hard to figure out.

So, it might seem that dropping Straw for another bat off of the bench may make sense with Marisnick only being used for pinch-running and/or late inning defense. But what bat would you add? Or would it be a bullpen piece? It does seem Straw is a little bit of a luxury but Hinch/Luhnow have always liked that speed off the bench asset.

Talk Zone / Re: Tipping pitches
« on: October 11, 2019, 10:15:24 am »
Every time a pitcher gets hit hard, his (and others’) first thought is “I must be tipping somehow. They knew what was coming.” Well, maybe.

I happen to think it is good baseball to study a pitcher’s grip or mannerisms to determine if he is doing things differently on fast balls and breaking pitches. I did that for three years coaching first base for the Longhorns, and I was able to let the hitters know who wanted to know what was coming. Our first baseman, Bob Snoddy, won the SWC batting title my senior year and gave me credit in a newspaper interview, making Coach Falk apoplectic at this disclosure. One has to be certain when calling pitches for hitters because crossing the hitter up is dangerous and loses his trust in the credibility of the info.

I did this as often as possible coaching HS also. At McCallum in the ‘70s, we faced an outstanding pitcher named Tommy Boggs for three years. I called every single one of his pitches for three years because of a mannerism he had by sticking his tongue in his cheek on curves. He threw very hard, and this helped hitters get ready for his fast ball. Knowing what was coming helped us beat him every time we faced him his sophomore and junior years.

Despite our knowledge, Tommy beat us three times in close games  his senior year, including a playoff game. Shoddy defense at times plus bad luck contributed, and our hitters’ knowing what he was throwing was not the deciding factor in these games. Tommy was big, strong, a fierce competitor, and he had improved so much he was drafted second overall in the first round by the Rangers and played several years in MLB for the Rangers and the Braves.

Here is the bottom line on this issue, as Boggs showed us and as Glasnow showed the Astros after the first inning last night: a hitter can know what the pitcher will throw, either by a call from the bench or by watching for the tell, but he still has to hit the ball. Using tipping pitches as the excuse for being hit hard is at least partially valid, but the excuse also denigrates the hitters’ skills.

Great post, Jim.

-The Astros outscored the Rays 40-27 in 2019.
-Tampa won three of those four games to open the 2019 season.
-The Astros scored nine runs in those four games, and scored four runs in the last three games of that opening series combined.
-The second HOU/TBR series was Aug 27-29. Houston won 15-1, won 8-6, and lost 9-8.
-The Astros are 5-12 at Tropicana Field since the beginning of the 2015 season. They're 2-6 in 2018-2019.

That would be beyond the pale. They have got to find a way to do better than that. Like switching to the later game in the territories of the two teams. Or putting the late game on an alternate FOX network until the big FOX can pick it up. But since it is already on FOX1 I suppose there isn't an alternate network and it is a college football gameday. This has the possibility of being really fucked up.

I've been considering doing that. I assume you'd recommend it? What time of season did you go?

We did the Canadian Rockies early summer IIRC.  Flew into Vancouver to catch it and tacked a couple of days at the end of our trip in Banff. Drove to Calgary to catch a flight home. I recommend it for those that can enjoy being in a comfortable seat and looking out the window for hours at a time. You can go out to the rear of the car, which I did often, and get some air and less obstructed views. The food on the train is very good, too. We paid extra to sit in a dining car for the meals which really is just lunch and something light for breakfast. By dinner we were off of the train and in a town where we were put up in lodging.

Servais on Greinke post-game: It was art. He's out there just dealing and drawing it up the way he wants to. It's frustrating when he's on his game like that, because you really have to be disciplined at the plate. One of the things he's really good at is when he gets ahead in the count, the balls are just off the edge and they look like strikes. Veteran pitcher and he was really on top of his game tonight. Coming in after Cole, it's totally different styles.

Looking back I still dislike some of those players...Gooden, Strawberry...

The Cubs were for a while a team I REALLY rooted against. That had a lot to do with Zambrano, Dusty Baker.

Now my disdain is focused on the Stangers, but mostly because of Odor. Can't stand the guy.

I will be surprised if Odor is still a Ranger next season. But I will still hate the Rangers for some reason. And I lived in the Metroplex for more years than I have lived anywhere. Also here are the principles of the deal and how they have fared since:

Verlander: 37-14, 2.48 ERA / 0.84 WHIP, 576K:76BB, Cy Young Runner-Up in 2018, World Series Champion.

 Daz Cameron: .217/.332/.385 at Triple-A in 2019.
Franklin Perez: Injuries have held him to 30.2IP since the trade.
Jake Rogers: .118/.230/.289 in 23 games for Detroit in 2019.

More evidence that you want to be the team trading the prospects. I'm really disappointed to see that Perez has had the injury bug. I had high expectations for him.

more from astrosfuture
Javier has posted great numbers during his minor league career, and has done so with solid but not great stuff. After a 2.70 ERA last year between A/A+, he has made it up to AA this season. Overall in 2019 he has a 1.87 ERA with 123 K in 86.2 innings. While the stuff he possesses isn’t elite, he has consistently put up good numbers thanks to high spin rates and solid breaking balls. If he finishes this way in AA this season, he will continue to rise.

Hinch on Greinke: He can just really pitch. I know nowadays we're fixated on power and stuff and the strikeouts and wipeout this and spin that, and that's all fine and good. But when you see the artistic side of Zack Greinke and how he pitches, how he moves the ball around the strike zone, how he challenges one of the best hitters in baseball in Mike Trout and beats him, there's just an art that he has the It Factor.

Abraham Toro, the quondam Quebecois, is duplicating Rojas' success at AAA looking to move past Tucker on the prospect list.
.429/.571/1.071 and a .500 OBP in 15 games.

anyone know what position(s) Toro has been playing? Does he approach the versatility of Rojas?

All I know is that I was wrong about Correa. I thought that we had the next A-Rod. Wellsir, he's not even in the same stratosphere with A Rod. Good player? Yes. All Star. If healthy, maybe. There are better shortstops in the game, e.g., Lindor. And then this injury crap. Untouchable? Definitely not. Sell high. But sell.

Not sure the "sell high" days aren't behind us. Personally, I would not attempt to deal him. Let him play, when healthy, and then let him walk when his contract is up. You can still catch lightening- in- a- bottle possibly for a post-season.

CFA wins on customer service and overall presentation, no doubt.  An acquaintance of my wife's was trying to start a CFA franchise and corporate has some really strict requirements for would-be franchisees.  They won't let just anyone start one up because they want the experience to be consistent.  That's why every CFA you walk into is well kept.

But they've become victims of their own success.  They reacted with some streamlining to their drive-thru operation, and at first you'd get through in 5-10 minutes even if the lines were long.  But based on my last few experiences I think they've reached the limit on how effective it is without a larger kitchen and more real estate.  I had to drive down MLK during the lunch hour a few months ago and the lines of cars waiting to turn into the CFA between Guadalupe and Lamar were fucking up traffic for everyone.  No fast food is worth that.

Plus, the people at CFA are too nice and perky.  I'd rather go to Wendy's or Popeye's and get a better chicken sandwich, a shorter wait, and interact with someone whose pleasure it most certainly is not.

In the '80s I talked to CFA about a franchise. Except they didn't really franchise, and may not still, but they do partnerships. It is a concept that has worked for them and I believe keeps their product and their operational quality up. Go into a Burger King, for instance, and you don't know what you are going to get. Some are ok, some are filthy (BK). The CFA concept has the business operator on duty, hands-on, wearing a CFA uniform about a zillion hours a week. I didn't want that for myself. But it works to their advantage.

I cannot abide Popeye's.  In fact, I find it particularly distasteful.  If I want fried chicken, it's Frenchy's or nothing.  On the other hand, I love CFA's chicken sammich.  And their waffle fries...I'm all about the surface area to mass ratio.

I"m with you on this. Except for the Frenchy's part. I haven't tried one. I'll be on the lookout.

My dad was a Tiger fan too before MLB came to Texas. Not sure why as he had no roots there. He pulled for the Lions in football, too, before Texas had an NFL franchise. I was a Brooklyn Dodgers fan as a kid, but when they went to LA, I dropped them. That year was Elroy Face’s 18-1 year, and I started following them because of him. In 1960, I was with them from the first pitch of ST to Mazeroski’s homer to win the WS. That 1960 Pirates team was my all time favorite team until 2017.

Have you read Kiss It Goodbye by John Moody? It is about the '60 WS from the perspective of a Pirate fan who was six years old in 1960. It has a little bit of a Vern Law focus but is a great narrative of that team, those players and the bond that formed between father and son through baseball. If I could go back in time and see a game from some of the old ballparks that are no longer around, Forbes Field would be on my list.

The bullpen is the biggest problem. It's not fully recovered from the beating it took midseason when 1. All the injuries to the offense led to a long string of low-scoring, close games with the pen having to grind out multiple high leverage innings almost every night. 2. A fluky run of extra-inning games. 3. Then the issues with the starting rotation forcing them to pitch lots of bullpen innings 2 out of every 5 games. If Cole is out for a while (and I'm guessing they'll be conservative with him because a hamstring on a pitcher is major bad mojo) that means more hard work for the pen at least once every 5 games.

Ideally they could bring up extra pitchers to eat lots of innings in September, rest the bullpen regulars and not worry too much about the details... but that would assume they could coast through the last month. Messing up these next couple of weeks would mean not being able to finish off the A's and not getting a chance to rest people.

I suspect there are 30 ML bullpens running on fumes by this time of the year.

First class human. I would love to see him be the game-winning hero in a big game this year. I mean a game that really means something.

Hinch on the subject of Reddick: I always go to pitch selection or I'll go to a little bit of how hard he swings and how hard he chases hits. He's not using the opposite field as much. There's little things that he could do that he hasn't done for the last month or so. He's not in any danger of losing playing time. One of my favorite things about Jim Deshaies was when he would explain pitch selection, count, location, etc.  He's say things like "two sliders down and away, so he's got him set up to come hard in..."  Berkman has the same insights.  If only everything didn't lead to "when I was playing..."

It doesn't sound like he's had any significant schooling on being a broadcaster. The network needed someone for a few days here-n-there to fill in since they dole out in-season vacations and they start a list of most well-known ex-Astros. I wonder why they don't or can't get Bagwell to come in for these games. He has some modicum of broadcasting experience. Or maybe dust Dierker off?

I do not think these things matter as much as performance. The team is prepping for the playoffs. I do not want to jinx him, but  Devo looks to have turned things around. If he has, and Rondon still is shaky to bad, Devo should be pitching to MLB hitters. As I said recently, Rondon is an enigma. He was and should be a reliable late inning guy.

Rondon has made 43 appearances in 2019 and has allowed at least one hit in 23 of them. He has allowed multiple baserunners in 16 of them.

On May 12 Devenski had a 5.94 ERA. In 27 appearances since, Devenski: 31.1IP, 23H/12ER, 37K:13BB, 3.45 ERA / 1.15 WHIP

30 years ago, I was staying in a downtown St. Louis hotel that was within walking distance of the stadium.  The Cards were playing the Astros.  Since the game was not on local TV and I was too cheap to buy a ticket, I walked by the stadium during the game while listening to the game on the radio.

Suddenly, the gates were opened and there were plenty of seats!!!  Turns out the gates were opened each night during the bottom of the 7th inning, apparently allowing walk-in traffic!  Returned the next night, enjoying the last 2.5 innings of two Astros wins!!!  It was great and the price was right!

Have you ever heard of another ball club that allows or did offer this freebie?  Surely, much depends on the neighborhood, but St. Louis was great!

Agree. And we also don’t know how Luhnow’s long term outlook may influence what he does now.

For example, let’s say the long term budgetary plan excludes the signing of Springer and Correa long term, and they have decided that Springer is the one to keep because of Correa’s fragility. You could give up some prospects now if you know that in the off-season your going to trade Correa with 2 years to play and can restock the system with that deal.

Not saying that’s the plan or what I’d necessarily do, just saying that the organization I’m sure is looking at this deal for how it impacts us now and the future.

One reason I like the TV broadcast is the absence of shameless homerism. Blum has been saying for awhile Altuve has become pull-happy this year, and he has illustrated the point with Altuve’s spray charts. The result often is high choppers to 3B. GIDP. Outs.

Bagwell was very frank last night about Bregman; he said his swing has been off all year. I think so too. Lots of ofers. Lots of pop ups. The absence of line drives. Looking jumpy and uncomfortable at the plate at times. Bregman’s HRs are great but are fools gold. He is not the same hitter as last year, but there is time. Bagwell says Bregman knows. If I see it, the real professionals see it also.

Hinch called the conversation he and president of baseball operations and general manager Jeff Luhnow had with White “brutal.” The team essentially cut ties with White to call up Urquidy, but his days were numbered considering Diaz and Correa are close to returning.

“We just told him the way the roster was shaping up, we needed an extra pitcher today to start the game and over the next week we’re hoping to get Diaz and Correa back and the roster was going to squeeze him off the team,” Hinch said. “We thanked him for what he did. It puts his career in a little bit of a detour for now. We’ll see what happens to him over the next seven to 10 days.

“From a 33rd-round pick to the big leagues to a big splash when he first made the team to outperforming the Minor Leagues to coming back and literally carrying us as a DH last season to being out of a job and off our team, it’s a brutal conversation.”

I’ve thought about him and it is well known that the Astros were high on him a couple years ago. Some of his numbers are decent but the dollars are the problem as I see it. You’d have to get the Giants to eat a big chunk of that which I would think would cost you more from a prospect perspective.

From Kaplan's recent article:

Collin McHugh isn’t an option to start, outside of serving as an opener. He’s no longer stretched out as a starter, and the Astros evidently believe he’s best-suited to relief at this point. His opportunity to make their postseason roster would be in the bullpen, so from that standpoint, it makes sense to let him settle into that role.

Thanks.

I'm a little curious as to why McHugh doesn't get a shot at holding down one of those BOR spots. He has been successful in that role before.

Not sure what they mean by “immaturity so caustic,” it’s an odd phrase. I saw his last outing and didn’t have that observation at all. After getting shelled, and even with a crucial misplay in the field, he seemed “mature” to me.  He did appear to lose confidence by the end though.

Yea, it goes against the grain of everything else I have read about Whitley. Surprising.

I've been unable to open a link or post it but there is a feature in Baseball America about Whitley that is less than flattering. AstrosCounty provides an excerpt:

Beyond the poor results, evaluators have consistently said that Whitley, who began the year as the youngest player in the Pacific Coast League, has displayed an immaturity on the mound so caustic that it has obfuscated his still-bright ceiling.

Just floating it. Does Cole have any track record of success in the postseason? JV certainly does.

I know it isn't wise to extrapolate from one start--much less one inning--but that Game 2 start of his has had an overlarge presence in my own memory. I can't remember how he handled himself in his consecutive WC matchups against Arietta.

Just throwing it out there as a possible contributing factor to their seeming disinterest in resigning him.

Rather small sample sizes in Post-Season to extrapolate a post-season Cole opinion. I would trust him in post-season in a heartbeat.

This would have been a great game for him to play first  It is frustrating to have such talent out due to injury especially when it results in more fizzling Tyler.

If Manfred was hoping to showcase actual baseball in London, he has failed. At the moment, the score is 15-6 in the top of 5th, and the Yankees have the bases loaded. There have been at least 11 pitchers so far. The starters lasted 1.0 innings, combined. There have been errors, wild pitches, passed balls, pulled hamstrings, lousy throws. Center field is a daunting 385 feet away. Fox is reduced to talking about those fucking 2' long Boomstick heart attack hot dogs. Well done.

I wonder if they're letting them carry extended pitching staffs for this little escapade. If not, tomorrow's game could take eight hours and result in about 40 runs. Shit, today's game may reach 40.

Oh good, there's two more. It's now 17-6 Yankees, 2 outs in the bottom of the 5th.

It actually sounds like a game non-baseball fans may  really enjoy.

Lance Berkman treated his gig as a color commentator on the television broadcast very much like he used to participate in the radio talk show. Two very different formats but to "Twinkie" Berkman, it was all the same. When he would appear as a guest on Sports Talk Radio in Houston, his candor and storytelling were exactly how he performed last night on the broadcast of the game. Those of us who remember his appearances on Sports Talk Radio (and how they would just wind him up and let him go) knew he speaks with plenty of candor, holds nothing back in terms of his opinions, and usually doesn't mind speaking directly about someone or something. He did that last night when he talked about Biggio, Oswalt, Doug Eddings (the Home Plate Umpire), the NL Central cities (road trips he hated because the downtowns in those cities were ugly), Chicago Cub fans and his gig at Second Baptist. I can bet you that he'll bring along other stories and opinions tonight as well, some of which are pointed right at others he has deep opinions about, like managers and owners. But he tries to balance that out with his remarks about himself and usually, it's not about flattering himself either. So he thinks if he can be self-effacing, he can also be critical of others.

I enjoyed Lance last night. It is good to sometimes have different perspectives from your color man. If he is serious about doing this much in the future he needs to learn that less is often more from color people.

Really like Ford and Sparks - low key, matter of fact, strong, timely analysis.

Neutral on Kalas and Blum but they have been growing on me lately. They are personally enjoying the contributions of the second stringers and it shows through and elevates the broadcast. Don't like Morales - she is annoying and detracts from the game.  However her interviews with the Mayfield and Stubbs families were great.

By your logic anything doing that job would be annoying. But you blame it on her? She is better than most in that role.

On MLB today, GM in residence Dan O'Dowd said it was the catcher's fault for vacating a base he has no business vacating in that situation. Then he added a dig in case anyone thinks "well, he should get an A for hustle since he was going to back up a play at first in case they try to get a double play!". O'Dowd quickly said after he said it was the wrong play to go for two and the catcher had no business taking that option away from the shortstop "And he hasn't backed up first base all season long, why start now!!!" The added emphasis was O'Dowd not mine.

O'Dowd is pretty good on that network.

I get the impression that he doesn't keep score. He makes lots of mistakes.

Which is one of the reasons I pretty much exclusively listen to the radio guys. Robert Ford is constantly off on pitch location, but otherwise those guys are a joy to listen to.

I'm pretty sure Kalas keeps score. I believe he was showing his card when that did that feature on  scorekeeping a couple of years ago and the crew showed how they did it. Well, at least he kept it that day. Has there ever been a baseball broadcaster that didn't keep score? Not counting Harry Carey that often didn't know the score late in his career.

In 2017 about this time a solid majority of the board agreed Verlander was too old, too expensive, and too much over the hiss to be an acquisition target. That same majority agreed Luhnow should not try to trade for him because he was not worth the prospects it would cost. Look what JV did after coming to Houston. I would not mind seeing if the Astros could revive Madbum, but he would have to give an indication he will stay. Tucker or whoever is too much for a rental who may be a bit of a project.

Good analogy with JV. I, for one, didn't expect to get what Houston has gotten from him. And remember that JV wasn't even sure he wanted to come, initially.  Now he looks like he has several good years left.

Went to the game last night, hoping to see Whitley, but he wasn't scheduled. Anyway, Alvarez with two more homers, both to left.  The first was more of a line drive on a better than excuse me swing, but not an aggressive cut.  The other was a towering fly ball that made it over after fighting off a slew of 3-2 pitches.  I left before his final AB, where he had another double to left.  I think I've seen four homers of his in person and have yet to see one on his pull side of center field.  I was impressed on one catch he had.  Off the bat, I figured it would land between him and Fisher, then midway, I assume Fisher would track it, but instead it was Alvarez who got there.  Not a wow play by any means, but solid.

Only saw one ball hit to Straw at SS.  He ranged to his right and got a force at third.

Urquidy.  Good fastball (94-98) that probably is decent in the spin rate they talk about.  Seems to generally stay off bats.  I assume he was working on his change as he threw it a lot.  Not a good pitch at all.  No deception or movement.  Meat.  He could command his slider but it was just average.

Reed hit a homer after I left, but prior to that, he looked like someone who didn't really want to be playing baseball.  That was my impression at least.

Was surprised how small Stubbs was, but he put a charge into one line drive deep into the left field alley.  Hardest hit ball of the night, IMO.

Either they had absolutely no respect for the Sounds catcher or they are making a concerted effort to steal bases.  The first three guys I recall that made it to first left on the first pitch.  All successful.

Thanks for the report. Now that I have re-located to Georgetown I need to get out there and take in a game or two.

You rang? Martin's approach is very similar to what I used to teach. I believe that every movement in a windup should have a purpose. I very much favor an Occam's Razor approach. While I understand the desire to interpose more motion in an attempt to either hide the ball or deceive the hitter, I have always maintained that the most important aspect of pitching is balance.

It's essential to be able to repeat a delivery, and in my opinion, the more motion you have, the higher the likelihood that you'll have mechanical problems or trouble repeating a delivery. Remember that I  primarily worked with beginning pitchers.

what you write makes perfect sense and seems to be the trend among today's pitchers. I do, however, miss the flamboyance somewhat of the guys like  Marichal  and the high leg kick of Spahn and guys of that era.

I know that twitter has discussed the subject ad nauseum, but it just seems like Tyler White is much heavier than he was last season.  It could just be that the beard is much bushier so his face seems bigger.  Or maybe he just got a baggier uniform.  But I wonder if he did gain weight and whether or not that has been part of the problem.

Regardless, it's got to be Kemp over White.  White is striking out a ton (34% of all PAs).  And he hasn't shown any power this season.  I've been a big supporter of White, but he doesn't look good at the plate at all.

I can tell by looking at White he has gained weight. His legs look like tree stumps.

A contract similar to the Aaron Hicks extension should be a standing offer from the Astros. I’m sure George wants more.

I don't think anyone is disputing that Laureano could fill a similar role, it's just responding to the original comment that the Astros somehow missed the boat on him and it calls into question their ability to judge talent.  He's got value, but he's not the kind of player who pushes people out of his way, and he simply wasn't an upgrade.

I'm sure you are referring to my post and let me clarify something. I never questioned the organization's talent evaluation abilities.  I complimented it. The rest of your post I agree with in retrospect and in reading some of the board's comments.

I've wondered a little about the Fish-slingers and if they have the team to continue to compete for the ALW even though this year was thought to be a rebuild.

Last night after the games I took a look at the extended standings at MLB.com and noticed that the Astros have played every single game against winning teams. In contrast, Seattle has played only ten games against teams over .500 and are a measly 2-8 in those games. The Angels have the same schedule anomaly as Houston, but are 9-16 while the Astros are 15-9.

I like the Astros' chances.

I’ve been thinking the same thing. They could put him in the long relief roll instead of James to keep him stretched out. Then again if they want to keep him stretched out they could’ve sent him to AAA to pitch in the starting rotation and then call him up if they need him. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see what the plan is.

I have never understood the Harper mania. He had one insane year, a couple of pretty good years, and most recently a couple of years where he gave his team a WAR that Jake Marisnick could give you. Sure, he hits 20-30 home runs. Great. But the idea that what he gets paid and what Mike Trout, who has a legitimate claim on best player in the game, gets paid are talked about at the same time is crazy to me.

The belief that Harper is some sort of franchise cornerstone is just bizarre. I'd rather have Springer than Harper - no homer - and it's really not all that close.

I wonder what sort of contract George will end up with. And with whom.

Springer is a guy whose value is not all what happens on the field. Great guy in the house. You don't get paid for that though.

Lots of talk on here about some of the young guys in camp that have looked great. Alvarez, Toro and Tanilu along with Whitley, Martin and JBB have no doubt been impressive. I’d like to take a moment however to talk about two veterans who have really had good springs to this point.

Jake Marisnick has really impressed. Much has been written about the change he has made to his stance at the plate. It looks to be paying off. While his .310 batting average to this point is encouraging, it is his reduction in strikeouts that has been the most welcome surprise to me. Last season He struck out 39 percent of the time. So far this spring, his K percentage sits at 13 percent. Agreed, he is facing some pitching that he won’t see when the season starts. Nevertheless, his new approach seems to be working. When the season starts, if he can cut last season’s 39 percent K percentage down to under 25 percent, this team will really benefit from his being in the lineup and not just defensively.

The other player who has impressed is Robinson Chirinos. Steve Phillips said the other day that he was really surprised when he interviewed Chirinos because Robinson was so excited about the analytics the Astros were using to help him improve offensively and defensively. Robinson has totally bought into what the Astros want him to do to improve and he can’t wait for the season to start. He has had a very good spring at the plate hitting .348. While I don’t expect that to continue when the season start against better pitching, if he can up his batting average from last season by 15 to 20 points, this lineup gets much deeper than it already is.

I've often been disappointed putting too much stock in Spring stats. Particularly offensive stats. But, yes, those players have looked good.

3 batter minimum or the end of an inning?

i.e. does a guy who gets the last 2 outs of the 7th have to face 1 batter in the 8th?

Interesting question. What if pitcher faced two guys to get out the inning in a NL game and was due to bat in the next half-inning?  I suppose that would require a double-switch if it were a close ballgame.

Given that McHugh and probably Peacock are heading back into the rotation and that Devenski hasn't looked good this spring (including last night's appearance) I am wondering whether it makes sense to sign Fields.

Toro is a guy I've been keeping an eye on since he was drafted. I have a good feeling about him. Tanielu is a guy that never makes the "lists"....he just hits.

The actual Johnny Bench plans to be in the stands when former Johnny Bench award winner Garrett Stubbs makes his MLB debut.

That's a great story. I've heard Bench interviewed on the radio a couple of times and he really is funny and seems like a great guy. Pretty cool for the young guy to have that relationship and be able to discuss his trade with one of the best.

Thanks, Nate. For a mediocre team those Astros had some great players. Too bad it never came together for them. The Wilson story remains heart-breaking to me after all of these years. A great talent but an enigma. My fondest story was him seething in the dugout as his teammates were getting no-hit by Jim Maloney. The next day he no-hit them which broke a ten or so game losing streak and set them on a winning season.

Reed has zero value.  He is a AAAA hitter who can't hit in the major leagues.

I hope Fisher can re-establish value this spring.  There are teams who could use an outfielder.

Fisher also runs well and plays a good OF. Reed has one "skill".

Yes it was. Nice rebound by Devo. Also, another good game from Derek Fisher which is encouraging.

And by the way, Armenteros continues to impress. If he continues this all spring, just like he did last spring, he’s going to put them in a difficult position.  I like it.

He actually threw 3 IP. He got better as he went along but the overall line doesn't look impressive. Looked pretty good after that first one.

It's way too fucking early to bring up 1980. Remember it as if it was yesterday. I took so much shit that year because I started bragging early in that game, and my friends who were Phightins fans gave me unmitigated shit for days.

'80 was so tough. I imagine we all believe a healthy J.R. would have turned the table. But I also didn't know if that team would ever be back in that position again. I felt very sad for a long time.

Wow.  Nice deal for Minnesota.  I'm surprised he didn't find better but maybe (like others) he overplayed his hand early and by the time he was willing to get real about a deal, possible suitors early moved to plan B and were no longer viable destinations.  Side note:  Just think how cheap the deal might have been had draft compensation been attached to him.

The price seems pretty fair to me. The average per year I mean. Two years is pretty unusual though on a guy this young. Why do you think he deserves better?

Talk Zone / Re: Astros Trounce Competition in Positional Rankings
« on: February 21, 2019, 11:35:56 am »
I don't have a link.  This is all based on what I heard this morning.

The MLB Channel on Sirius/XM has spent the last week ranking the top-10 players at each position (LF/RF combined to Corner OF) based on the votes of their hosts/analysts.  They finished with CF today.  Steve Phillips then revealed that he spent last night compiling team rankings based on the results.  If your team had the top player at a position it got 10 points, second best player got 9 points, etc.  There were seven Astros ranked:

Altuve          No. 1 2B     10 points
Springer      No. 2 CF       9 points
Bregman     No. 3 3B      8 points
Correa         No. 4 SS      7 points
Osuna         No. 9 Clos    2 points
Verlander/Cole combined in SP for 9 points (not sure where they each ranked).

The Astros total of 45 points was nine points higher than the Yankees' 36 points.  The Brewers, Cubs, and Nats were next in line.

Harper was the No 5 Corner and Kimbrel was the No 2 closer.  Signing both would only move the Nats into third place ahead of the Brewers.

Good stuff.

Did not say he would. If Manny intends to opt out, he only has s five year deal.

Depends on whether Harper wants a record contract more than he wants a ring. What did he turn down Washington or if the report today is true, why has he turned down multiple long term offers?

Record contracts last until the next FA signing period. Rings are forever. If I were a super-stud ballplayer (I'm not but I play one on tv)
I would make sure my agent has talked to that Houston team.

I wish I had gotten to see more of Cedeno in CF. Living in Corpus we only got a handful of televised games a year and to appreciate a players' defense you have to see them pretty much daily. I know he was outstanding but I've really come to admire Jake's defense. If there is a ball he doesn't catch it may not be catchable by a human. And his arm is more than adequate. I think the same can be said of Cedeno when his legs were healthy.

Two games in Colorado on July 2, 3 before returning home for a weekend series against Angels July 5th-7th.  The 4th is on a Thursday this year which is often used for off-days. At least the players will have a day-off at home on the 4th but what a missed opportunity for MLB.

Not that I am a homer for management, but the excesses of superstar contract negotiations and the stuff we have seen in the last 10 years is ass-puckering insane.

For Harper not to even consider above market annual offers on a shorter term deal misses where this sport is headed (imo).

Mine was meeting Dizzy Dean and getting his autograph on my Astros hat that Harry Walker sent to me. Dizzy was in my hometown to broadcast a few innings of the minor league game and meet and greet the fans. Even though I never saw Dizzy Dean pitch, I knew lots of stories about the old Cardinals Gas House Gang because my Dad was a Cardinals fan (furthest team down south for many years). My hometown had a St. Louis Cardinals radio outlet until the Astros came into baseball.

He was friendly and wanted to talk baseball, whicch tickled the shit of me at 12. I could have had him autograph my Aces hat, but I had him sign my Astros hat. He wrote: "Best of luck from Ole Diz." Sadly, because I was probably doing something I shouldn't have been doing (manning a water balloon slingshot at summer camp aimed at girls across the lake), the slingshot recoiled and I ended up in the lake, and the lake swallowed my hat. I was devastated. I swam and looked around for the hat to no avail.

As I recall, Dizzy was dead within about a year of that chance encounter. It's truly one of my most prized memories. It's a connection, however tenuous, to a significant period in baseball.
I well remember listening to Diz call the Game of the Week on Saturdays. Not the most gifted announcer but never was there a bigger character behind a mic.

Today we bid farewell to @BBailey_19 after an awesome two weeks of prep before Spring Training. How bout these @TrackManBB numbers from his live session: AVG FB spin rate- 2684 @ 93.4 mph (28.7 Bauer Units). Good for ~4.5 standard deviations above league average. Yep, that'll do.

As a point of reference, Justin Verlander's spin rate on his 4-seamer in 2018 was 2621 rpms while Ryan Pressly's spin rate last year on his 4-seamers was 2565 rpms (9th in MLB). The highest spin rate on 4-seamers in all of MLB was David Robertson at 2661 and Bailey exceeded that in his training session at Driveline. Verlander and Pressly are harder throwers than Bailey (by a couple of mph) while Robertson is almost exactly the same. FWIW, Robertson and Bailey are about the same height (5'11" and 5'10"). None of this of course tells us anything about location nor the effectiveness of pitches beyond the 4-seamer.

(For those curious, Bauer units is simply spin rate divided by velo.)

Good stuff Nate. Now it becomes a little more clear why Luhnow & Co. were willing to give up such a good prospect in Laureano.

In Phoenix the driving concern (reportedly) was conserving water usage. Not sure about Arlington.

In Arlington I believe it was more a concern about how much light the field would get. And that was somewhat based on the positioning of the field to the sun IIRC.

Edit: Just checked out an article in Dallas News about the surface. Player safety was cited by Ranger brass as a consideration and the author added that the fake stuff allows the club to better use the field for other revenue-producing events.

Some fans have felt that the HOF is diminished by the high volume of entrants. Now that this is finally possible, moving forward, the new 100% standard will help to create an inner circle of HOFers -- the players who are unanimous selections from 2019 forward.

I never enjoyed geometry but I'm pretty sure you can't make any kind of circle with one of something. Or two.

Just thinking about this some more. This is easily the worst HOF class in history.  It truly is an embarrassment.

And the BBWAA vote was just as bad. There is no legitimate argument that Edgar Martinez is more deserving than Lance Berkman, yet one sails in and the other drops off the ballot without even consideration. I guess the voters have decided that in the absence of voting in the steroid guys like Bonds and Clemens, they have to just find some warm bodies. And there’s no reasoning behind which warm bodies they choose.  Just a sad day for baseball.

I'm going to think about this some more but I think I agree with you.

I've always been surprised at Pettitte's low numbers.  I thought he'd be in by now (not that I think he deserves it, but he *was* a Yankee, after all).

As for the potentials...I think Schilling will eventually get in, but not sure about Bonds or Clemens (at least on the BBWAA ballot).  Yes, they are trending up, but I think they've kind of maxed out the voters who are willing to vote for them.

Eventually Bonds, Clemens will be recognized even if there is a special designation such as a cheaters wing.

Truth be told, even without Marwin Gonzales, the Astros have major league options at the ready to move around to fill in where needs might arise. That makes a AAA insurance less viable. When you can move Gurriel and Diaz around and use White at first base, you have pretty good options, not to mention using Bregman at short too. Diaz is going to be someone who helps a lot if he's as good a bat as some say. Might even give Tony Kemp a chance to stick around as a second base option plus outfielder as well.

It's interesting that Hinch has gone out of his way not to use Kemp at 2B. Not that there is a lot of opportunity for  time there.

« on: January 07, 2019, 12:41:45 pm »
I don't know if this has been previously reported but the Astros offered Keuchel a 5-year extension after his CY season.

•Southpaw Dallas Keuchel stands as the most decorated starter remaining on the open market, but if the Astros had their way, he wouldn’t be available. The Astros offered Keuchel a five-year, $90MM extension early in the 2016 campaign, but he turned it down, according to Rosenthal. At that point, Keuchel was a 28-year-old coming off an AL Cy Young-winning season. Now 31, Keuchel hasn’t been quite as effective since his career-best campaign, though he remains an above-average starter and should rake in a high-paying multiyear deal before the offseason is out. Having made $22.35MM in salaries since he rejected the Astros’ offer, Keuchel will need to sign for $67.65MM as a free agent in order to match what Houston offered him, Rosenthal notes.

Jurickson Profar goes to the A's (which presumably ends their attempt to re-sign Jed Lowrie). Rangers net 3 minor leaguers (4 incoming, 1 outgoing) plus some int'l slot money. Rays also involved in transaction.

So now that we know that the Miami Marlins are in conversation with the Houston Astros again and that they (the Marlins) know you can't center a deal around "Run" Forrest "Run" Whitley, what if they (the Marlins) said to the Astros they wanted the following:

Kyle Tucker (OF), J.B. Bukauskas (RHP), Max Stassi (C), and Tony Kemp (LF)

Would you (not asking would the Astros, I'm asking would *you*) do this trade? I have not heard anything about asking price but suffice it to say since the Marlins have asked for good to really good major league talent from previous suitors (Bellinger, Acuna, Conforto, et. al.), methinks you're going to have to mix prospects with young talent for them. Are they asking too much in my trade scenario?

Personally I am not ready to deal Tucker so I'm out. I'm sure I'm in a small minority with that opinion but I don't find a catcher with two contract years worth that price even if he is one of the top 3-4 in the game currently.

With Verlander and Cole free agents after next season, 2019 has to be the "all in it to win it" year for the Astros.

That's not to say that the Astros' window closes after this season, but the kick ass rotation that the Astros are enjoying might not be around and will require significant retooling.

I wish Luhnow would surprise us with a four year contract for Cole this Spring.

This makes a ton of sense to me because you use the Reddick money to sign-up Cruz. What it does is basically assures Houston would be going for either a young CF like Straw or Tony Kemp plays multiple outfield roles. On the other hand, it takes away any block from Kyle Tucker coming in as the pencil-in LF even before ST. I think this combination of Cruz/Brantley does alot to help the club get more consistent on offense. Brantley plays left field and in a pinch can play RF if necessary. I would love for the Astros to find a way to move Springer to right permantly, hence why you might see Kemp in center more often if Tucker isn't really pencilled in. And that would be a really good, consistent offense because at this point of his career, Reddick isn't as consistent a hitter as Kemp is showing he can be. Gives the new guy, Diaz, from Toronto the added flexibility to play some LF when needed. He has a really good bat from what I've heard and is a consistent line drive hitter too.  But who would take Reddick right now? Maybe the Mets if the Astros take some of the salary, but then again, that would surprise me.

I still say an option is to get one of either Cruz or Brantley right now and wait it out in the trading deadline if you can get another bat. But then again, Crane said he'll flex the payroll if he is convinced that Luhnow is making a really good deal to get both Cruz and Brantley.
Reddick isn't as consistent a hitter as Kemp is showing he can be.
Reddick is just one season removed from an .850 or so .OPS.  Those don't come easy. I don't know if he'll ever attain that again but those guys aren't in abundance.

It will be interesting to see how he fares without the Astros ecosystem surrounding him.  I'll be equally interested to see how the front office staff that other orgs have imported fare as well.  High performing organizations are rarely a person or two but an entire ecosystem.  I'm wondering if the parts that are being enticed away (players and staff) regress to the mean and the Astros ecosystem maintains their high performing nature.  Or if the opposite happens.

Yes, it will be interesting to see how he does and I wish him well. A good Astro. A good person. I will miss his unique personality.

Richard Justice said Monday night that with the Astros window to win open right now, Crane has told Luhnow he has the green light to spend up to the luxury tax number if he deems it necessary to win another title. That would be around $207-208 million and a drastic increase unheard of from this franchise. If that report is accurate, then perhaps there are ways to get Harper. If he was in the 2 hole behind Springer and in front of Altuve where teams had to pitch to him, he would light up MMP. Still seems far fetched though.

I can’t think of another high profile bat via free agency besides Machado and the Astros don’t need him. Is Cruz considered high profile????

Would have to be via trade. Is Realmuto “high profile?” Perhaps.

Tucker had a very poor MLB debut, but it was only 72 trips to the plate, and he was 21 years old. Meanwhile, he hit .332/.400/.590 in AAA with 24 HR and 93 RBI in only 100 games. It's possible the Astros see something in his swing or approach or whatever where they don't think he'll ever approach those numbers in the majors, but I don't think it's accurate to say that he "played himself" into being trade bait.

Those AAA #s are incredible. If he could eventually do 85% of that in MLB he would be a superstar. I've just decided I don't want to deal him.

I understand not wanting to block Tucker if they don’t trade him, but if I had a chance to get Brantley I’d think I’d try to find a way to fit him in. He is a professional hitter who will hit .300 and strikes out only 11 percent of the time. He isn’t going to hit for much power but you could do a lot worse at DH than Brantley if you didn’t want to spend the dollars for Cruz’s power.

A Brantley deal would proceed a Tucker deal I suspect.

Kris Boyd's selection as All Big 12 is a triumph of hype over production. He is rarely near his receiver when the ball arrives.

I won't be sorry to see Boyd go.

Mike Fiers (for the 2nd straight year), Robbie Grossman and Xavier Cedeno among the non-tenders.

Would Luhnow bring Fiers back? He is a useful SP on a staff that has some holes.

I might be crazy, probably am. Would anybody else be willing to take a flyer on Shelby Miller?

I know he hasn't been healthy and hasn't been good for a few years but he's still pretty young, 28. I also looked at his Brooks baseball page, and he hasn't lost any velocity, seems to still have pretty decent stuff, I haven't watched him pitch so maybe he just doesn't have it.

I just feel like this staff could figure out how to get a lot out of him, if he could stay healthy.

Like I said, I'm probably crazy and I'm not sure how you can put him on 40 at this point with what else needs to be added.

Just see it as a low risk, potential huge reward if you help him figure out that arm talent again

I seem to remember Ryan scouting him. Then Luhnow drafted him. Could Strom fix him? It would have to be a Minor League deal.

Sorry it was confusing --- I was trying to say I wish KC and Chisox was more like Pittsburgh et al.

Agree with you 100 % --  Love Hudson's Idea for Old Florida TB Park --- instead of the Disneyization of b-ball culture.

Surprised Milwaukee did not go even more into the "Beer Garden" theme --- Imagine the park having its own Brew Village --- everyone would be drunk including the toddlers.

Your post was not confusing. I completely understood and appreciate your sentiment.

Absolutely love parks like this!

Pittsburgh did themselves some justice with there new one a few years ago
Houston's juice box is phenomenal
Baltimore's field and complex is pretty cool

Would not mind seeing some others adopt a more local feel --- like KC, Chisox, etc..

Pittsburg's PNC is on my bucket list. The park on Chicago's southside I have no interest in partaking. I've been to Camden but not when a game was going on.

After overseeing an impressive @astros pitching staff, Brent Strom is our MLB Coach of the Year.

This is a new award that BA has created.

Good for Stromie. He has been a huge part of this.

McTaggart says they're still interested in Eovaldi:

I likey. Let's do this. Between Eovaldi and Goldy the club could improve greatly with Houston-area guys.

Sounds like a swan song deal for McCann.

He was a great example of what a veteran leader can be.  I'll already remember his clutch his against NY in games 6 and 7, his solo shot in game 5 of the WS, his hbp in the 10th, and chugging from 1st to 3rd in game 7 on Marwin's double, then hoofing it in safely on the grounder and being greeted by Correa imitating him by running in place.  Lastly,  the scene that gets me every time,  was when he and Gattis embraced after the game both with tears running down their burly faces.

His contributions of course ran deeper than just those moments of production.  Good luck to him,  very glad he was an Astro.

I will never forget this. https://ftw.usatoday.com/2017/10/houston-astros-alex-bregman-game-7-throw-greg-bird-whoa-play-mlb-yankees-alcs

We all knew he wasn't coming back, but Brian McCann signed with the Braves.

Good for him. He lives there and had said he would like to finish there.

I think Berkman should get in but I don't think he will. You can stack his numbers from 01-09 against just about anyone not named Barry Bonds and he looks pretty damn good. The problem Berkman has is longevity, broke into the bigs at 23 and last played at 36. Hard to be a HOFer with only a 13 year resume and 3 of those 13, he played less than half a season

I think this is true.

I just heard on MLB Network that there are fewer 3B in HOF than any other position. That surprised me.

Pretty similar -- Halladay just did it for longer (and was maybe a little better at his peak).

Halladay:   203-105, 3.38 ERA, 64.3 WAR, 416 G, 390 GS, 2749.1 IP, 2117 K, 1.178 WHIP
Oswalt:      163-102, 3.36 ERA, 50.1 WAR, 365 G, 341 GS, 2245.1 IP, 1852 K, 1.211 WHIP

Thanks BUW. Halladay was a much larger guy than Oswalt. Maybe that allowed more longevity. Or maybe he was just more interested in playing.

Rosenthal has written that he thinks Cle may make Gomes available. That's a pretty good catcher.

Halladay's top 10 most similar players on BBRef are interesting:
1. Verlander
2. Greinke
3. Gooden
4. Lester
5. Guidry
6. Jimmy Key
7. Dazzy Vance
8. Oswalt
9. Saberhagen
10. Hudson

So, you've got 1 Hall of Famer (Vance), 1 guy with a good chance of getting in (Verlander), and a bunch of good/great-but-not-HOF players (Greinke, Gooden, Lester, Guidry, Key, Oswalt, Saberhagen, Hudson).

While they were both playing there were a bunch of Halliday/Oswalt comparisons. The stats, IIRC, were very similar.
