isn't that a play that can be reviewed? or is it just homeruns that they review? That is horrible.

In the beginning he was pretty laid back would crack jokes, talk to you, sign stuff. But once he became the "ace" for the astros and he played with clemens he became really full of himself.

« on: April 24, 2012, 01:27:12 pm »
I was looking at games to go to this year and looking for teams with the most ex-astros. I couldnt find Oswalt and he wasn't on the active players list on ESPN. I know he had his troubles last year but I figured somebody was going to throw him some money. Did he just hang em' up?

I'm a Red Wings fan (as is Mark), but there are many candidates for adoption.  Like stingy defense?  Go with Tampa Bay.  Breathtaking individual play?  Pittsburgh.  etc., etc.

Just watch Sidney Crosby with the Penguins that got me hooked (last year before the injury). Still don't know all the rules but since he's been back he makes it fun (and not bad to look at)

After surgery on Monday, I've just been hanging out at the Slack Shack all week recuperating. I've been watching the Showtime series Weeds via Netflix and I'm on season 5 today. Man, what a fucking crazy TV show. Not as good or well done as Deadwood or the Wire but very entertaining, on par with Six Feet Under, especially in terms of dark comedy. I've never had Showtime, so I've missed all of their shows. Next I'm going to watch either Californication or Dexter. Any recs on which of the two is better, more interesting, more compelling...etc?
[/quote

Both good shows but go with Dexter first.

I would take the 5/150. But my guy is more than a 5 to me and makes much less than the 150. We have been together for 23 years and he would do anything for me that he could possibly do. We both love to sit around and drink beer and talk. Doesn't matter the subject he just likes being with me. So to me money and looks don't really matter to me. As long as you love each other and are happy with your life. I was just as rabid if not more bat shit crazy for Ausmus (than Bud Girl) and he could never understand why. Everybody has their type.

Ashton Kutcher? No absolutely not. He would get on my nerves and I probably would kick him in the nuts. But again I am not a teenager either.

No on either kind of porn. I would rather be doing it than watching it

HELL NO.

Adam Dunn, Ivy McLemore, Anthony Rendon and Jim Long will also be attending. And of course Milo will be the emcee.

I have been going to these dinners since 97 and they have been lots of fun.

You will have to e-mail me at   [email protected]

« on: January 17, 2008, 03:57:12 pm »
I will just post right here just in case I miss your e-mail. I would get there about 6-6:15. Parking over there stinks and I am not sure what else they have going on over there. The players get there pretty much about 6:45. But the last time Bagwell and Ensberg were there they were walking around taking to people. Garner was out last year drinking beer and chatting it up. Most of the players go in the side door on the side where the bathrooms are. If they are not in a hurry they will stop, sign and take pictures. Berkman is always late. You just walk in and find your table with your number from your ticket...the best seats are the ones with your back to the entry doors that way you are facing the stage and the screens. There is no assigned seating at your table. That was another reason we would get there early. I always took my video camera. They will sign anything. Last year I took my Roy and Lance action figures and they signed them. They thought it was pretty cool they had McFarlane action figures. People take bats, cards, jersey's, baseballs etc...Each person gets a program of the evening. Each player is posted and has a picture so some years I had them all sign it so I wouldn't have so much to juggle. But they will only sign one thing per person. They bring the food out for the players first so they can eat and then go on with the ceremony. They always start late. So about 7:15 Milo gets us and blows your ear drums...but you know, you hear that voice and know baseball is just around the corner. The players will usually stay for about 30 minutes after the ceremony for autographs and pictures. But with it on a Thursday I don't know how that will pan out. They usually had them on a Friday. I am so sad I am going to miss it this year I hope you and whoever else is going will have a blast. Let me know how it goes.

Bourn, Matsui, Tejada, Berkman, Lee, Pence, Wigginton, Towles, Oswalt

Holy crap!

I just realized that this projected Opening Day lineup includes exactly TWO players out of nine (Lee, Berkman, & Oswalt) who were even on the 25-man roster on Opening Day 2007, and Berkman & Oswalt were the only ones on the the 2006 Opening Day roster.

Although I think this move could be very good (or disasterous), this is not the way I'm used to the Astros working.

they are saying Ausmus opening day....

An OWA table would be outstanding.  And then we would politely be asked to leave.

That is what I was thinking: a table of OWA, I could stomach missing it just a little more. I think that's a great idea! Make sure you wear your OWA shirts....most of the players hang around after for pictures and autographs. also forgot to add Josh Beckett is supposed to be there too.

I usually go to this every year and this year I will not be able to make it. If any of you are interested I can scan the reservation for to you. This year's honorees are: Carlos Lee, Roy Oswalt, Hunter Pence! & Woody Williams. I have gone to these for the last 10 years and they are a blast. It will be held Thursday January 17 @ 7:00 at the Hilton Americas, $75 per person or $750 for a table. E-mail me since I can check my e-mail frequently and not OWA.

ok-- I thought about it over the weekend at a wedding...we were talking about dancing with the stars and my aunt reminded me how I would always come over to her appartment to watch the Donny and Marie show because we didn't have cable at the time. So I guess that would be the biggest guilty pleasure for me "I'm a little bit country.....and I'm a little bit rock and roll" (it's gonna be a long day now with that song in my head)...forgot about Go West....also to add to the list Glass Tiger. I guess I could add Sonny and Cher too. Had both on 8-track.

Out of the teams that Houston has played this year, who has most caught your eye?  I liked the Angels with the exciting balance throughout their lineup.  I don't know if their pitching will hold up, but they impressed me.  Also, that Ichiro guy with the Mariners is pretty good.

I don't mind watching the Brewers. I hate them because they play us it seems like 50 times a year and I get tired of Hardy, Hall, Hart and Fielder kicking the crap out of us but they aren't a bunch of assholes and I like when Oswalt and Sheets go at it. I wouldn't feel bad rooting for them in the play offs. They are very similar to the Astros player wise and management wise

Talk Zone / Re: Announcer Ratings
« on: August 17, 2007, 01:36:36 pm »
Just curious as to what others think, how would you rate JD and Brownie on a scale of 1-10 as far as broadcasting combos in baseball? If Joe Buck and Tim McCarver are 1's and Vin Sculley and anyone they put next to him are a 10, then I'd give JD and Brownie an 8. I think JD does a good job of filling in the blanks with his stories and corny jokes. He stays reasonably unbias and often keeps things interesting with bizarre stories of Canada. Brownie does a good home run call and did a great job with Biggio's 3000th hit even with the awkward moment when he was thrown out at 2nd.

I love listening to JD and Brownie. I have learned a lot through JD. He will mention something about the pitcher/batter as a problem unfolds (stance, dropping arm etc) and it gets me looking more closely at the player. They are easy to point out good plays and don't hesitate when somebody makes a bonehead play...Lance Berkman.....and they point out the good and bad for other teams and I like that. I have had to listen to Ranger feeds in the past and wanted to stab my ear drums with a dull/rusty knife. I don't know how ranger fans do it. I know when we play on FOX and they mesh the Astros/Ranger announcers JD always looks confused sitting next to the annoying jackass Ranger brodcaster. And the big FOX brodcast it pretty umberable. So I think we are very lucky to have they guys we do. It makes it fun for me to watch these guys.  And he's got his ugly lucky jacket....and will wear it in public. I give them a 9.5.

last time we put Mr. Baio up there we did pretty good. I like the JD plaid jacket idea though. But I would hate to use up all of it's magic now. He's been doing that for a couple of years and I am sure we will need to use it in the future. What about that picture of that kid- Brave fan giving the finger? or will that taunt the BBG's?  Humm.....now for the sacrifice for the team...I have a Cardinals suck shirt but it didn't do it's magic this weekend and burned my skin just because it said Cardinals. I am thinking you may have to start out small with the chili pies. Or since we are chasing the Brewers eating Brats all week?

Talk Zone / Most JOYful Astros Win List
« on: April 13, 2007, 01:39:15 pm »
Don't know if this has already been done
(maybe several time through) but the question
came up while listening to XM and I thought
would discuss my worst astros loss

1)  About 6-7 years ago, astros were playing a doubleheader in Pittsburgh
and I believe they lost the first game due to a blown save (could be wrong)
But I know they ended up losing twilight game on a walkoff grand salami.
(somebody with a better memory or internet research tools please correct me
if I am astray).  This was the same day my wife and I were moving from Grand Rapids to Indianapolis (However, the movers we used stole our stuff and held it hostage unless we wired them 3 times the moving fees) I am trying to stay positive with my wife and said at least the stros are going to win & not one FU&*% ing minute later but the pirates get a grande and we look at each other
"this is not going to be our day" it must have been 2001.  Do not ask about the movers.

If anybody remembers these games, I would appreciate any thoughts or memoirs (trying to cleanse the soul here)

I know I did not include the 1986 playoffs, 1999 playoffs, game 5 vs. the phillies
etc. (but really sometimes the worst moments are when you don;t expect them)

Yep July 28, 2001. It was my b-day and my family took me to pappasito's for lunch. We all went out to the parking lot to say our good byes and I turned on the radio to hear us beating the crap out of them. Get in the car to leave and thanks to that Bastard Billy Wagner we lost the game. I actually am glad I didn't watch the game. I probably would have hurt somebody.

Arrested Development was one of the best comedies ever (yeah, I said it). It's demise was VERY untimely. It's the only TV show DVDs I've ever bought.

"Buster: Make love in your own hand, Mother!"

Beautiful.

That and a "loose seal" bit of Busters hand...that was genius writting! and the never nude bit kills me too. And it took me until the second season to realize that was Ron Howard doing the voice over--and it even had Scott Baio in it...how could you go wrong?

I'm with you! I didn't realize this happened until last night when I sat down to watch Monday's episode, which still said The Black Donnellys on the DVR recording, but was the other shows you mentioned. I don't watch a lot of TV outside of baseball, but this was one of the few shows that I enjoy enough to record. I've read the show was not getting good reviews, which I think is fucking ridiculous. This makes the second show I've fell for that got shit canned, the other being Arrested Development. Oh, well.

Arrested Development kicked ass. They show repeats on Saturday nights on G-4. Still cracks me up!

you could always have a Berkman/Oswalt/Ausmus commercial. Roy with his bull dozer while Berkman is eating all the brisket laying on a hammock while Ausmus is throwing balls into the pool and telling Berkman he's lazy or poking him with the tongs from the bbq.

I don't think this newest story really means anything, one way or the other.  As I understand it: this is still a proposed deal, not final.  Congress asked the FCC to get involved, so the FCC basically asked DirecTV to explain themselves.  DirecTV has just gotten around to doing so.

Meanwhile, it's 29 days to Opening Day.

DirecTV says "No, really, it's better that you don't have a choice between cable and a dish."  Link:   DirecTV Rulz

And if you already have Dish Network installed, then you're fucked too. I've had both satellite systems in the past, and I always thought Dish is better. I have Dish now, but can't use Extra Innings because now I'm in the Astros' home market. But if I were still counting on Extra Innings to see Astros games, then MLB would in effect be telling me which satellite provider I had to subscribe to.

And being in the home market is actually worse now, because I have to rely on my shitty local Fox Sports affiliates. The have horrible signals, are never in HD, and their schedule is hit-or-miss. Even with MLBEI's limitations, and there are many, I was able to see more Astros games outside the market than I can now see inside it.

MLB's broadcast and blackout policies are fucked up beyond comprehension. Instead of embracing fans, they alienate us.

Have you checked the FSN altnerate channels?  Almost every game was bumped for any stupid local (read UT) or non-local (read Dallas) team.  But without fail, the Astros were carried on one of the alternate channels.

and what sucks about having to watch on alternate channels is that you don't get to see the pre or post game interviews or updates. It just turns it's self off.

Not directed necessarily at xxx, but more of a general question... Is the idea that Drayton won't deal with Boras documented somewhere? Or is this based solely on speculation?

seems like the only teams willing to work with Boras recently are the Yankees/Mets/Kansas City just to name a few. I see Zito going straight to New York. But that's just me. I have heard several times on morning radio saying the Astros won't deal with Boras and read some here on the tz but it's not etched in stone or anything. But I don't think they go down that road unless they absolutely have to and at this point they don't have to. I have heard many players changed thier agent because people don't want to deal with Boras.

There are tons of new sub-divisions in Humble/Atascocita. But let me tell you the traffic is awful during rush hour am/pm. I live in Atascocita and work only 6 miles away (downtown Humble) and it takes me 30 minutes to get to work and anywhere from 30-45 minutes to get home at night. And the schools (Humble & Atascocita) are already over populated. Another thing to consider about Humble, their school system has gone down the toilet since I went there.

Great snippet in NYCU today about Springer sitting in the stands last night.  I sat in that section for the Bruntlett game last year.  Is this "common practice" for an active suspended player to sit in the stands?  I certainly have never heard of that before.  Did any of the Houston cameramen show him during the broadcast last night?  I've seen Drayton, Hunsicker, and Purpura in the stands before... never a player though.  Also, I wonder where Garner was?

Earlier in the year Clemens was sitting behind home plate watching the game.

I saw it on Monday. It's just a little bar out in the open in a corner. You can't see the field from there (crawford boxes in the way) and I didn't see any tv screens around there. Nobody was there of course this was the bottom of the 8th on Monday. Does anybody know why the took all the tv's out? Where we were on Monday we couldn't see the score board and usually any obstructed view of the boards they have tv't to make up for it but it looks like they took all the tv's out in the 100 level. They could have at least replaced them with ceiling fans.

I'm really curious to see what happens to ticket prices next year.  Probably went to more games this year than I did in my entire life before, and before they got hot the wife and I were tossing around the idea of buying a nice-sized package for 2006.  I only imagine that making it to the circus that is the World Series will stoke interest--which can only be good for the team--but I'm hoping they don't price us out of the market.

Afer last year going to the play offs our tickets went up I think $3 each. So we couldn't afford season tickets this year. But I imagine going to the world series this year will call for another increase.
