Eddie Izzard posed that question in one of his philosophical monologues.   His was a very different point in a very different context, a more relevant statement by the Astros in regards their "relationship" with the Cardinals would be a reverse of the old break-up standby, "it's not me, it's you".

Derrick Goold of the St L. Post Dispatch tallies up the Cardinals' current list of "vendettas" with teams in the Central

"Trust me, me and Dusty Baker are very motivated, both guys with a vendetta, a little chip on our shoulders," Jocketty said. ..

The Cards like to think that they're the heart and soul of baseball.  Maybe they were once, before my time.  But now they have the moral discipline of teenagers on their first spring break, the class of a Spanish soccer agent and the same, reactionary, yackwagoning fans who have invaded everyone else's ballparks too.  They are one of the least classy organisations this side of West London.

No, they aren't.

Actually, I think you have hit on one of the main reasons why most non-delusional fans react negatively to LaRussa in such a visceral way - he is utterly humorless.  He is a fun sump.  Any room, jail, stadium he enters, good feelings evaporate the moment he walks in.

I couldn't care less about LaRussa usually, but do take some solace in the fact that even when he wins, he has no fun.  He is incapable of joy.

I know when they lost me. Up until '83 they seemed a classy organization. Fresh off the '82 World Series victory. The Cardinals lost their soul back in '83 when then owner Gussie Busch's grand-son, (now the current AB CEO) August "The Fourth" got away with a DUI influenced negligent homicide, after evidence was lost. That always bothered me. That punk was often getting into trouble and having his "name" get him absolved. Now he's the head of the worlds largest brewer of reconstituted piss. They lost heart a few years following that incident when Whitey left.
Everyone's talking, few of them know
The rest are pretending, they put on a show
And if there's a message I guess this is it
Truth isn't easy, the easy part's shit
