Jury Duty HELP!! (non-bb)
« on: December 08, 2006, 05:05:32 pm »
What happens if you just don't show up.

I haven't been selected. This I believe is just the selection process.

I know business reasons are not an excuse, but I really can't miss work that day. Any advice? How do i get out of it?

In Harris County you can go online and reschedule.  You'll have to serve on the same day of the week but at a later date.

Call to reschedule.  They may not ask you later.  It works in Smith County.

Is it county? Federal?  Do you have to call in before you go?  It could he that you won't have to go if you don't have a low number.  Other wise there isn't much you can do about it.  I was on Federal jury duty for three months, and I had to call every week.  It was afwul.

Business reasons can be an excuse, but they have to be non-bullshit, and something beyond, "I have a really important meeting that day."  If you are self-employed, and especially if you are the only employee of yourself, you can probably be excused.  A fair amount of companies encourage employee fulfillment of civic duties, and will pay you your salary to serve.  As long as you agree to sign over to them the six dollar a day check the county gives you for serving, that is.  You have to consider that.

Re: the selection process, once you are impaneled, you might as well get picked for a trial.  The majority of those are one-day affairs, and then you're free.  If you don't get picked, you'll sit in the impaneling room 'til at least noon on Wednesday before you are released.

BTW, if you have actually served on a jury in a trial - not just been summoned - in the previous 12 months, I believe you can be excused if you have some other perfunctory excuse to go along with it.

I'm sure you were joking, but the worst thing you can do is 'just not show up.'

You should accept the Yankees' $16 million offer and immediately move to the Bronx.

you do not have the option to not show up. either ask for a postponement or go to jail.
Often wrong, but never in doubt.

THANK YOU ALL!!! I was able re-schedule.

And screw Andy Pettitte! Actually I like him and I hope he wins 20 but the Yankees win 60!

I've only been given the summons one time, and I had a vacation planned, I called in and they told me no problem, they would reschedule me and then they never did.

I've been told (and I don't know if it is bs or not) that they can't really do anything to you because they don't send the mail certified so they have no way of knowing if it is delivered.  Not sure if that is true or an urban legend, but with the spotty state of the mail I could see it happening.

I'd advocate showing up or rescheduling. I believe it is a civic duty.
